Cat

Sandra R. Neeley - 2019
8427 words Orlgo was one of the last of a unique breed. He’d been exiled, for nothing more than existing. His species was feared and ostracized. He needed a host – required one in order to live, thrive. Because of that, most other species considered his people parasitic. He supposed in a way, maybe they were – but there was so much more to it than that. He’d given up hope – intentionally left on an abandoned space station near the outer reaches of the universe, there was no chance for him to find a host. No chance for him to survive. He’d wished day after day after day for just one chance to claim a host. Now he wasn’t so sure. Insanity had begun to rear its unavoidable head. He wasn’t sure he could survive a rejection from a host even if one was available. Then, a female crash lands on his space station. Could this be his chance? Would she fear him, or could he possibly win her over? Maybe show her that he was not what he was rumored to be. He needed to watch her, learn her likes and dislikes, find a way to present himself that would attract her to him, earn her trust so he could make her his host before she could run from him. Chloe had been alone her entire life, learning the hard way that you could only depend on yourself. “Learn to fight alone,” the nuns at the orphanage had told her. So, she had. She’d fought relationships, fought attachments, fought society and fought the “norm.” Which is how she ended up alone on the edges of the known universe far from any of the mining planets she routinely made supply runs for – in a damaged ship – without any choice but to maroon herself on an abandoned space station. This would be home until she could manage to repair her ship. Hopefully, there wouldn’t be any lifeforms lurking that had any desire to make her their dinner, or worse. There were some things worse than death. She looked back at her ship, knowing that a rescue was unlikely. She’d managed to activate the homing beacon, so that anyone searching for her would be able to locate the signal and come for her. But that was just the problem, there would be no one looking for her. She wished she’d taken the time to connect with anyone, at any time, so someone would know to look for her. Fate has a funny way of giving just what is needed, exactly when it’s needed and not an ounce more or a moment sooner. Whether it’s a blessing or a curse to all parties involved is in the eye of the beholder. One should always be careful what they wish for, they just might get it. Warning: Intended for mature audiences. This book contains some situations, sexual and otherwise that may be disturbing for some readers. If you are offended by these subjects, please do not buy this book.

Hearts of Indesh

S.J. Sanders - 2019
After the planet's few remaining females had long since been stolen away by slavers two decades ago he never thought he would have a mate. He is an aquisitioner, not a pirate, who has gotten bored of his life saving females in distress and the general daily grind. He is not "lonely" exactly, but when he sees an article boasting that a prince was marrying twenty humans, a new species with wide mating compatibility, he decides that the prince really has one too many. After all, wouldn't a female do far better being rescued and mated to him. Ignoring all objections from his crew, he makes a simple plan: board the Lorgor starship, steal a mate, and haul ass home to Indesh. Things don't go quite as planned, but a scenic route with a romantic stay-over on a planet of cannibals isn't too bad. Surely his female would be swayed by a healthy dose of romance! Nikki Perdit is the daughter of an up in coming regional diplomat who allowed her father to talk her into registering for the Mate Index. He wants to make a good impression on the community by registering his only daughter, she is swayed by thought of a mate of her own. She is surprised, and displeased, to find out she was selected to be one of twenty women to be mated to a Calysii prince. She is less than thrilled, tried to escape actually. Imagine her surprise to be "rescued" by a cocky pirate whose idea of romance is gratuitous oral sex--from her. Despite being convinced her new mate is a bit nut-job, she is charmed by his sweet side. Nikki find herself in short order on the run from a jilted mate, overdosing on aphrodisiac plants, and saving three hundred captive women from a cannibalistic race in order to spirit them away to bring hope and love to the hearts of the people of Indesh. And maybe in the process find her own great romance story...all in time for Valentine's Day.

Zonaton

Linda Mooney - 2014
It was their only hope after being forced to flee the dead planet that was once their ancestral home. The native inhabitants of AR617b, known as gerons, are sentient creatures that resemble a cross between dragons and griffins of old Earth lore. When they initially tried to destroy the settlers, a deal was made to ensure both species' survival. It was decided that each year, every five-year-old human child must take The Walk across a hundred meter field. If they don't stop or run, they will arrive safely on the other side, and be allowed to grow up and have families of their own. But if they break the rule, the gerons will kill them. Unless, by a strange quirk of fate, a geron decides to Pair with the child, taking and raising the human as its own. Emmala took The Walk, and found herself adopted by one of the older gerons, an immense silvery-white creature named Zonaton. For the next fifteen years, he cared for her, protected her, and loved her. But now Emmala's real family wants her back, and they will do everything they can to have her returned, even if it means killing Zonaton, and starting an all-out war with the gerons. What neither the settlers nor gerons realize is that there is another alien species watching and waiting for the two combatants to go into battle. Because when they do, that will be the aliens’ cue to destroy everyone and claim AR617b for their own.
