His Assistant Serials: Complete Box Set

Sharon Cummin - 2015
The one person I loved most in the world was gone. What was I going to do? I had given up the last two years to take care of my mom and be with her until her last breath. She was my best friend. At twenty-one, I was going back to school. That was what she had wanted for me. I was determined to own my own company one day. It was important to her that I finish school, and I wanted to make her proud. My father had passed away before she could tell him she was pregnant. She had given up so much to raise me alone. I knew she would have done anything for me. The day after her funeral, I found a box in the attic with my name on it. She told me about the box the day before she passed, but I promised her I would wait to open it. When I opened the box, I found a letter on top. There was nothing that could have prepared me for what I was about to read. As I read the letter, tears fell from my eyes. I dropped the letter to the floor and tore through the box as I sobbed. My life would be changed forever. How could she have lied to me? How could the one person I trusted most have kept such a big secret from me? There was only one person who could answer the questions I had, and I could only think of one way to get to him. I had to get a job, and there was only one company to work for. The only thing on my mind was getting answers. One thing I didn't need were distractions. Then he came along. He was tall, built, tattooed, and oh so sexy. In a suit he looked amazing, but in jeans and a tight t-shirt he was unbelievable. Just when I thought he couldn't get any sexier, I saw him on his Harley. I was in trouble. I couldn't keep my thoughts straight. He was cocky, full of himself, and held my fate at the company in his hands. One minute I couldn't stand him, and the next I wanted him more than I had ever wanted anything. Would I be able to get the answers I desperately needed before tall, dark, and sexy turned my world upside down? His Assistant, Part 2 - I accepted a job at Luke Technologies to learn more about the man behind the company, Luke Andrews. I didn't plan to love my job and build relationships with the people I worked with, including Luke. I had secrets that I needed to keep hidden until the time was right. Another thing I didn't expect to find was Kevin Reynolds, the opposite of what I wanted in a man. He was cocky, demanding, and full of himself and felt the need to control everything around him. At the same time, he was tall, dark, and tattooed and looked super sexy on his Harley. Kevin should have been off limits. He was closer to Luke than I thought, and he was my boss. The man held my fate at the company in is hands, and the harder I pushed him away, the more I wanted him. It didn't help that he seemed to appear every time I needed someone. Just when I thought things couldn't bet any better, my world came crashing down around me. What would Kevin do if he discovered my secret before I was to tell him? I found out the hard way, and his reaction was not at all what I expected. His Assistant, Part 3 - When my Mr. Right stormed out on me, I didn't know what to do. Then I got a call that shattered my world. I couldn't believe it. There was no way it was true. They had to have been wrong. My talk, dark, and handsome had to be okay.

In Kashmir, a group of young women, all in their twenties, were inspired to reopen the Kunan-Poshpora case and revisit their history and that of the 1991 survivors. Do You Remember Kunan Poshpora? is a personal account of their journey, examining questions of justice, stigma, state responsibility, and the long-term impacts of trauma. Detained and Deported: Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire

Margaret Regan - 2015
Her children screamed as the officers handcuffed her and drove her away. Within hours, she was deported to the rough border town of Nogales, Sonora, with nothing but the clothes on her back. Her two-year-old daughter and fifteen-year-old son, both American citizens, were taken by the state of Arizona and consigned to foster care. Their mother’s only offense: living undocumented in the United States. Immigrants like Elena, who’ve lived in the United States for years, are being detained and deported at unprecedented rates. Thousands languish in detention centers—often torn from their families—for months or even years. Deportees are returned to violent Central American nations or unceremoniously dropped off in dangerous Mexican border towns. Despite the dangers of the desert crossing, many immigrants will slip across the border again, stopping at nothing to get home to their children. Drawing on years of reporting in the Arizona-Mexico borderlands, journalist Margaret Regan tells their poignant stories. Inside the massive Eloy Detention Center, a for-profit private prison in Arizona, she meets detainee Yolanda Fontes, a mother separated from her three small children. In a Nogales soup kitchen, deportee Gustavo Sanchez, a young father who’d lived in Phoenix since the age of eight, agonizes about the risks of the journey back. Regan demonstrates how increasingly draconian detention and deportation policies have broadened police powers, while enriching a private prison industry whose profits are derived from human suffering. She also documents the rise of resistance, profiling activists and young immigrant “Dreamers” who are fighting for the rights of the undocumented. Compelling and heart-wrenching, Detained and Deported offers a rare glimpse into the lives of people ensnared in America’s immigration dragnet.

Hell Before Their Very Eyes: American Soldiers Liberate Concentration Camps in Germany, April 1945

John C. McManus - 2015
In the weeks that followed, as more camps were discovered, thousands of soldiers came face to face with the monstrous reality of Hitler’s Germany. These men discovered the very depths of human-imposed cruelty and depravity: railroad cars stacked with emaciated, lifeless bodies; ovens full of incinerated human remains; warehouses filled with stolen shoes, clothes, luggage, and even eyeglasses; prison yards littered with implements of torture and dead bodies; and―perhaps most disturbing of all―the half-dead survivors of the camps. For the American soldiers of all ranks who witnessed such powerful evidence of Nazi crimes, the experience was life altering. Almost all were haunted for the rest of their lives by what they had seen, horrified that humans from ostensibly civilized societies were capable of such crimes.Military historian John C. McManus sheds new light on this often-overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on a rich blend of archival sources and thousands of firsthand accounts―including unit journals, interviews, oral histories, memoirs, diaries, letters, and published recollections― Hell Before Their Very Eyes focuses on the experiences of the soldiers who liberated Ohrdruf, Buchenwald, and Dachau and their determination to bear witness to this horrific history.

After Aislin guides Jessica back to the waking world, she opens her eyes to find her plan gone horribly awry, and Jessica dead. Devastated, Aislin must find a way to stop dreaming altogether or somehow perfect it, before she kills her brother, too. While funny and charming, this book deals with some serious issues, and provides much for parents and children to discuss. Some scary situations, bullying, and reality of car accidents make this appropriate for children 6 and older, but may be more appropriate for children 9-13 years old.

Alexei; Russia's Last Imperial Heir: A Chronicle of Tragedy

Margarita Nelipa - 2015
The inherited ailment affected his behaviour and influenced the education he received. Using medical data, Nelipa exposes the truth about Rasputin's telegrams that purportedly alleviated Alexei's near fatal condition in Spala in 1912. Despite his hemophilia, Nelipa discovered that Alexei, like all Romanov males, did have a planned military career and yet the malady swayed Nikolai II to also abdicate on his son's behalf. During his lifetime, Alexei participated in several momentous national events, including the centenary of the Battle at Borodino in 1912 and the Romanov Tercentenary in 1913. Accompanying his father, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Alexei witnessed several theaters of war during 1915-16. Though he, like his sisters did not witness the revolutionary conflict on the streets of Petrograd or Tsarskoe Selo, he did suffer the consequences of his father's downfall - firstly as a prisoner of the Provisional Government and after that, by the Leninist Regime. Supported by documentary evidence, Nelipa explains why the Provisional Government forced the imperial family into exile. Nowhere else can one read the full harrowing account of the imperial family's life in Siberia that began with their detention in Tobolsk. It is impossible not to develop compassion for Alexei, who towards the end of his short life, unable to walk, died in a cellar because of who he was. The story of the family's exile reveals a close loving family who focused on Alexei's well-being despite the hardships imposed on all of them by the revolutionary forces.

Tragedy and the Idea of Modernity

Joshua Billings - 2015
As a major concern of modern philosophy, it has fascinatedthinkers including Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Freud, and Heidegger. Such theories have arguably had a more profound influence on modern understanding of the genre than works of classical scholarship or theatrical performances.Tragedy and the Idea of Modernity considers this tradition of philosophy in relation to the ancient Greek works themselves, and mediates between the concerns of classicists and those of intellectual historians and philosophers. The volume is organized into sections treating issues of poetics, politics and culture, and canonicity, and contributions by an interdisciplinary range of scholars consider themes of catharsis, the sublime, politics, and reconciliation, spanning 2,500 years of literature and philosophy. Although firmly anchored in the classical tradition, the volume suggests thatthe tradition of philosophical thought concerning tragedy has a major place in understandings both of ancient tragedy and of modernity itself.

Stealing Helen: The Myth of the Abducted Wife in Comparative Perspective

Lowell Edmunds - 2015
This story's best-known incarnation is also a central Greek myth--the abduction of Helen that led to the Trojan War. Stealing Helen surveys a vast range of folktales and texts exhibiting the story pattern of the abducted beautiful wife and makes a detailed comparison with the Helen of Troy myth. Lowell Edmunds shows that certain Sanskrit, Welsh, and Old Irish texts suggest there was an Indo-European story of the abducted wife before the Helen myth of the Iliad became known.Investigating Helen's status in ancient Greek sources, Edmunds argues that if Helen was just one trope of the abducted wife, the quest for Helen's origin in Spartan cult can be abandoned, as can the quest for an Indo-European goddess who grew into the Helen myth. He explains that Helen was not a divine essence but a narrative figure that could replicate itself as needed, at various times or places in ancient Greece. Edmunds recovers some of these narrative Helens, such as those of the Pythagoreans and of Simon Magus, which then inspired the Helens of the Faust legend and Goethe.Stealing Helen offers a detailed critique of prevailing views behind the real Helen and presents an eye-opening exploration of the many sources for this international mythical and literary icon.
