Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family

Amy Ellis Nutt - 2015
But it wasn’t long before they noticed a marked difference between Jonas and his brother, Wyatt. Jonas preferred sports and trucks and many of the things little boys were “supposed” to like; but Wyatt liked princess dolls and dress-up and playing Little Mermaid. By the time the twins were toddlers, confusion over Wyatt’s insistence that he was female began to tear the family apart. In the years that followed, the Maineses came to question their long-held views on gender and identity, to accept and embrace Wyatt’s transition to Nicole, and to undergo an emotionally wrenching transformation of their own that would change all their lives forever.Becoming Nicole chronicles a journey that could have destroyed a family but instead brought it closer together. It’s the story of a mother whose instincts told her that her child needed love and acceptance, not ostracism and disapproval; of a Republican, Air Force veteran father who overcame his deepest fears to become a vocal advocate for trans rights; of a loving brother who bravely stuck up for his twin sister; and of a town forced to confront its prejudices, a school compelled to rewrite its rules, and a courageous community of transgender activists determined to make their voices heard. Ultimately, Becoming Nicole is the story of an extraordinary girl who fought for the right to be herself.Granted wide-ranging access to personal diaries, home videos, clinical journals, legal documents, medical records, and the Maineses themselves, Amy Ellis Nutt spent almost four years reporting this immersive account of an American family confronting an issue that is at the center of today’s cultural debate. Becoming Nicole will resonate with anyone who’s ever raised a child, felt at odds with society’s conventions and norms, or had to embrace life when it plays out unexpectedly. It’s a story of standing up for your beliefs and yourself—and it will inspire all of us to do the same.

A Necessary Fiction

Karin Bishop - 2015
I don’t remember my past, or at least from birth to about age ten. I only discovered this while taking part in an experiment in my college Psychology class that completely upended my life. For one thing, I found out that I had no memories of nearly the first half of my life. I also found out something else. There’s another famous quote about “Walk a mile in another man’s shoes …” and so on. That’s what the experiment was, to experience life from a different perspective. For one student, it meant to wear a fat suit. For another, to spend time in a wheelchair. For me, it was to experience life as a girl. And although the guy remained skinny under the suit, and the guy could get out of the wheelchair, I discovered that I was a girl, inside; I learned that I was transgender. Once I learned that, I could begin to discover my past, my lost childhood … and then I could begin to discover what my future would be. This is the long and detailed story of my discoveries.

The Offer

Tanya Allan - 2015
His life was hardly going the way he had hoped. From a very early age he found his niche as a female impersonator. At six he joined his three sisters as a juvenile version of the Spice Girls, taking the part of Baby Spice. The applause hit a spot and, much to his parents’ and teachers’ disapproval, he decided that that was what he was going to do with his life. The problem was not that he was a talented drag artiste, but he was too good at what he did. Few of those who watched him portray current and famous female singers actually believed him to be male. They all believed him to be a talented mimic, but without exception thought him another girl. His personal life was another aspect that had yet to leave the starting block. Determined not to be seen as just another gay drag artiste, Max staunchly refused to adopt a life-style that was anything other than that of a macho male away from the stage. The problem was that all the girls in his life believed him to be gay, and those men who came close were of the same opinion, despite his insistence and persistence in denying it.Despite believing he was truly gifted, he found himself destined for the slow-lane to stardom. Indeed, he found himself up a cul-de-sac as his current job ended when the seedy night-club went into receivership. After the final performance, a man in a suit made him an offer that was to shake him to the core. That man was Major Harry Pearce, of the Department of Special Operations. His director was Sir Humphrey Maynard, the man responsible for selecting a certain Josie Fortune (now Fullerton) to work for him.Serena Sondera, an up-and-coming Argentinean female singer had been poisoned, and the Security Services suspected that it was a serious assassination attempt by a nefarious foreign power. They desperately needed her not to be lying at death’s door in a secret clinic in order to lure those responsible out of the darkness. The answer – Maxwell Soriano would become Serena Sondera and perform in front of thousands at the next concert which was just days away.It was time for Max to see just how good he really could be.The problem was that in doing so, Max was to face the true reality of who he should always have been. What he would do about it was another matter entirely.

Opposites

Karin Bishop - 2015
He doesn’t feel strongly about anything; he doesn’t really feel anything much. Not like his best friend Mark Thompson, who perhaps feels things too strongly. But Mike considers himself just a regular guy; nothing special. Then their high school announces an Opposite Day, where students can come dressed as the opposite of what they are—nerds can be jocks, jocks can be nerds, and so on. Mark has an idea: Since he and Mike are just regular guys, they should do the opposite and show up as regular girls. Nothing special. Mike is reluctant but with the help of two girls, Mark and Mike get the clothes to become two regular girls—and it would just be for Opposite Day, right? And then everything would go back to the way it was, right? Mark sails through happily but Mike is troubled, tied up in knots. The whole ‘regular girl’ thing—why did it feel almost … normal? But his definition of ‘normal’ is rocked as his own normal world comes apart. His father seems to be somebody completely different from the man Mike had known. And then Mike learns that his parents’ marriage is disintegrating. And then Mark isn’t spending time with Mike anymore. And now everything seems so opposite to the way it was … A Transgender Young Adult book by Karin Bishop.

Tea and Transition

Nicola Jane Chase - 2015
This is a marvelously candid memoir of gender and acceptance; one that breaks down many complex issues, though it is her enchanting British humor that makes them such a joy to read. Inner and outer recognition is uncovered through dating debacles, painful family discussions, and trips to Victoria’s Secret. Challenges of pesky pronouns, passport humiliation and underwhelming cup sizes test her spirit yet her charismatic wit never wanes. There are laugh out loud moments, heart-wrenching ones too as she tussles with the balance between he and she, and how gender is perceived—for herself and for those around her. Back in the 80s and 90s Chase was a globe-trotting DJ who played exotic clubs in the Middle East and southern China, then an indie music radio host in Hong Kong. However, having played at rooftop parties for sheiks, been a maestro in the clubs, and a household name on the airwaves, it was only after relocating to New York that the real journey began. Why was he feeling like a she? The feeling wouldn’t go away. Then the first cross-dressing steps into Manhattan as a woman. Embarrassing wigs, stares on the subway, and heels an inch from respectability. Through painful, unexpected, and hilarious experiences, a tipping point of gender was reached. But how to tell those who knew her as a man before? Friends were both won and lost, but the biggest announcement was over a cup of Earl Grey: the excruciating moment of disclosure with her 80-year old mother. The devolution and rebuilding of that amazing relationship is one of the most heart-rending threads of this book. Humor drives her forward as she explores the New York dating life as a woman. She gets thrown out of a strip club as a perceived threat to business, initiates her first bikini moment, and has a love match at the US Open Tennis Championships. Puberty happens for a renewed time in a different gender, and with that, dodgy fashion choices and overzealous make-up. She was a 16 year old girl in her 40s. As she considers life changing surgery, one moment of epiphany ensues, yet clarity comes with a kick. What would be next? There are martinis on top of the world, the pyramids at dawn, and high-speed motorbike rides through Asian back streets, but Tea and Transition is far more than a globetrotting travelogue or another tale of a right-soul-in-the-wrong-body. This is a wonderfully personal journey through places beyond the physical. Of change and the human spirit, love and family values, and how one man became one woman.

Funk the Erotic: Transaesthetics and Black Sexual Cultures (New Black Studies Series)

L.H. Stallings - 2015
It is multisensory and multidimensional philosophy used in conjunction with the erotic, eroticism, and black erotica. It is the affect that shapes film, performance, sound, food, technology, drugs, energy, time, and the seeds of revolutionary ideas for black movements. But funk is also an experience to feel, to hear, to touch and taste, and in Funk the Erotic , L. H. Stallings uses funk in all its iterations as an innovation in black studies. Stallings uses funk to highlight the importance of the erotic and eroticism in Black cultural and political movements, debunking "the truth of sex" and its histories. Brandishing funk as a theoretical tool, Stallings argues that Western theories of the erotic fail as universally applicable terms or philosophies, and thus lack utility in discussions of black bodies, subjects, and culture. In considering the Victorian concept of freak in black funk, Stallings proposes that black artists across all media have fashioned a tradition that embraces the superfreak, sexual guerrilla, sexual magic, mama's porn, black trans narratives, and sex work in a post-human subject position. Their goal: to ensure survival and evolution in a world that exploits black bodies in capitalist endeavors, imperialism, and colonization. Revitalizing and wide-ranging, Funk the Erotic offers a needed examination of black sexual cultures, a discursive evolution of black ideas about eroticism, a critique of work society, a reexamination of love, and an articulation of the body in black movements.

The Torc: Book 1 - The Emerging

Tanya Allan - 2015
One day, while staying with his aunt, he came across an item that his uncle had found just after the Second World War. In a box with an old bayonet, a soldier's helmet and some lead soldiers, he believed to be a part from a downed German aircraft from the Battle of Britain. This hoop of metal appeared nothing special. Idly, he played with it, and as it opened, he slipped it around his neck.Inexplicably and rapidly, Kenneth transformed into the person he had always dreamed he could have been. This metal torc was obviously not a part from an old war plane; but he did not know the torc’s true origins. Had he done so, he might not have treated in such a casual manner. Many millennia previously and desperately seeking somewhere to live after the death of their sun, a group of inter-stellar explorers discovered what everyone thought was a perfect planet. The atmosphere was as close to their home planet as they could want. The climate was ideal; neither too hot, nor too cold. The microbiology posed no apparent threats, and the soil chemistry PH was friendly and fertile; well capable of sustaining the crops they wanted to bring with them. The only fly in the ointment, so to speak, was the most advanced of the indigenous life-forms. Nick-named ‘The Brutes’, these were the most aggressive and nasty life-form they had ever encountered. Wholly different and about as incompatible with the explorers as one could ever be, the Brutes displayed an innate ability to learn rapidly and develop new ways to channel their aggression. With limit resources the ship’s scientific officer developed an ingenious means by which they could camouflage themselves by posing as the Brutes themselves. Micro-technology, crammed into what would appear to be a piece of plain decoration or jewellery, enabled the wearer to adjust their outward appearance to that of the Brutes. But matching the DNA of the wearer to the DNA of the target life-form, the wearer could take on the form of the Brute without them suspecting a thing. Including an enhanced translation program, an anti-gravity device and a force- field projector, the device was both camouflage and protection. The Brutes are divided into two genders, so I have made one for each. They must never fall into the hands of the Brutes, for they would give them too much power,” instructed the Science Officer. The best laid plans of mice, men and strange inter-galactic races often go awry.It was many, many years later that Kenneth found the torc. Would he ever be able to discover the secrets held within it, and which one did he find?

Allmyth: The Only Certainty is Change

Cooper - 2015
It's the World of Allmyth, a gender-fluid world of magic and danger, where the boys may be pixies and the girls knights in shining armor. This 36,000 word novella contains sex-changes, body-swaps, mind alterations and some steamy sex-reversed R-Rated sex scenes. Excerpt: Nari laughed and grabbed her boyfriend Ravi's wrists, pinning his arms above his head. Ravu struggled, grunting prettily, but she was too strong for him, and he settled back as she stared into his face, her breath hot against his cheek. Ravi tilted his hips up, pushed his knees apart, his long black hair spread out around his head. Nari let go of his arms and sat back ,looking down at his full brown breasts, the nipples hard, his small arms and round shoulders. He was a vision of womanhood, ripe and soft and radiant with feminine perfection. Ravi licked his lips and looked up at Nari with wet, cloudy eyes full of desire. "Take me," Ravi whispered in his soft, pretty voice. "Now."

Reviews- "Review by: 5amm1 on Dec. 07, 2015 : TISSUE ALERT I enjoyed this story mainly because it was creatively told from the point of view of her sister, with exerts of flashback and sections of Nicole's diary. (reviewed within a week of purchase) Review by: Elizah PT on Dec. 06, 2015 : How should I put this?: This is a very emotional story on the life of Nicole who was born a boy but with a girl soul. Be prepared to shed some tears for Nicole. This story will bring you through the childhood, schools, friendships, traumatic events, love, despair and more. This story emphasized the important of family support and understanding for a child especially a special child like Nicole. In my opinion, it was beautifully written and I recommend "A must read for those who support LOVE and Compassion". For parents or parent- to be, this is a good story to learn about unconditional love for your own child. Peace :)"
