Where God Meets Man

Gerhard O. Forde - 1972
First, that many of our problems have arisen because we have not really understood our own traditions, especially in the case of Luther; and second, that there is still a lot of help for us in someone like Luther if we take the trouble to probe beneath the surface. It is an attempt to interpret Luther's theology for our own day.The fundamental theme of the book is the down-to-earth character of Luther's theology. In using this theme, Forde points out that we have failed to understand the basic thrust or direction of Luther's theology and that this failure has caused and is still causing us grief. Modern scholarship has demonstrated that Luther simply did not share the views on the nature of faith and salvation that subsequent generations have foisted upon him and used to interpret his thinking. This book attempts to bring the results of some of that scholarship to light and make it more accessible to those who are searching for answers today. The central questions of Christianity are examined in this fresh restatement of Luther's thoughtthe God-man relationship, the cross, the sacraments, this world and the next, and the role of the church. The author presents the down-to-earth character of Luther's theology in the hope that it will help individual Christians today to be both faithful to God and true to their human and social responsibilities.

The Plight of Man and the Power of God: Romans 1

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones - 1972
We must meet the present situation and we must speak a word to the world that none else can speak.Martyn Lloyd-Jones Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was born in Wales and at the age of 27 gave up a most promising medical career to become a preacher. When a spiritual history of the 20th century comes to be written it will include not only the far-reaching influence of Dr. Lloyd Jones' ministry at Westminster Chapel in London from 1938-68, but of the remarkable fact that his published volumes of expository sermons have had an unprecedented circulation, selling millions of copies.Martyn Lloyd-Jones preaching always had an emphasis on the desperate plight of man and the power of God to save. His preaching was crystal clear on the sovereignty of God in the salvation of sinners, a concept that does not sit comfortably in our day of pragmatism, programs and self-help books. Nevertheless it remains at the core of what the world needs to hear. Based on the Romans 1, this wonderful book will help you understand what the gospel is. When we live in a world that is spiralling out of control we will want to hear this message again and again.

The Gospel in the Stars

Joseph A. Seiss - 1972
the common and accepted doctrine of antiquity that the constellations were divine in origin and sacred in character. They are woven in with all the old ethnic religions. Much as heathenism has perverted them to false worship, it has ever held to the belief that they are from God... -from "Primeval Man" Did God arrange the stars in the sky to spell out his ultimate plans for the human race? Such is the conclusion of this curious book, first published in 1882 as an attempt to reconcile Christianity with the public fascination with astrology... a fascination that endures today. In this profusely illustrated volume, discover the connections between the signs of the Zodiac and Christian symbolism-Leo the lion represents Jesus, for instance; the Gemini twins signify both the relationship of Adam and Eve as well as God's relationship with his church. Building upon this language of the stars, the author demonstrates the truth of God's "one plan and purpose of Redemption for fallen man." American Lutheran pastor JOSEPH AUGUST SEISS (1823-1904) was born in Maryland and served congregations in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. In addition to numerous translations of hymns from the original German, he also authored numerous books, including The Apocalypse.

Tomorrow's Child: Imagination, Creativity, and the Rebirth of Culture

Rubem Alves - 1972
Thus many of the proposals offered by today's futurologists fall considerably short of social revolution. They are, in effect, extrapolations from the functional matrix of our society. Like the dinosaurs who --disappeared not because they were too weak but because they were too strong, -- our civilization is motivated less by the desire for internal growth and existential relevance than it is by blind outward expansion. We are determined by a triangle of interlocking systems, each deriving and giving life to the others: the power of the sword, the power of money, and the power of science. In this context, to be a realist is to accept the rules of the game, laid down by the power lords of our --rational-- society, whose goals are war, production, and consumption. But the utopian mentality, argues Alves, wants to create a qualitatively new order in which economy must abandon the goal of infinite growth. The only way out, then, is to abort --realism-- from the body politic and impregnate it with the power of the imagination. This book clears away the debris of realism and lays the groundwork for a constructive theory of creative imagination, moving us toward new forms of social organization where the community of faith can be found. --My late mentor Ladon Sheats, about whom Alvez writes in his new Foreword, said that Tomorrow's Child best expressed his own theology; this book thus helped fuel not only imagination, but embodied Christian activism, and can do so again.-- Ched Myers Rubem Alves was educated at the Campinas Presbyterian Seminary in Brazil (Union Theological Seminary New York), and Princeton Theological Seminary. A Presbyterian minister and professor at the University of Campinas in Brazil, Alves is the author of What is Religion? and Theology of Human Hope.
