Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen

William Silen - 1972
Despite its relatively narrow focus, it is chock full of the pearls of clinical wisdom that students and practitioners treasure, and many of these lessons apply to medicine in general. The book was well characterized by a reviewer of an earlier edition for The New England Journal of Medicine: If only one book about surgery could be made available to physicians from all specialties, it should probably be Silen's recent revision of Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen. Since the book first appeared more than 30 years ago, it has remained the classic treatise on the initial approach to abdominal pain. Because acute, severe abdominal pain is still a common problem whose misdiagnosis can result in quick death, each generation of beginning physicians is faced with the urgency of learning to make a diagnosis in this high anxiety situation and they appreciate the wise, humane, precisely detailed guidance offered by Cope and Silen. For the 21st Edition, Dr. Silen has again updated the text in a respectful but significant way. He has strengthened its emphasis on pitfalls in the interpretation of CT and ultrasound scans, on misadventures caused by over-reliance on blood tests and radiographs, and on careful history-taking to avoid the costs of inappropriate lab tests. He has also reviewed the data from a randomized clinical trial indicating that patients should receive adequate analgesia while awaiting a definitive diagnosis, a dictum that is contrary to traditional teaching

Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing

Barbara Floersch - 1972
That seminal publication written by Norton J. Kiritz and named the “grantseekers’ Bible” by the New York Times in 2006, was used in over 40 countries, published in four languages, and used by over 1 million people. The new, 2015 book, Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing, distills insights Grantsmanship Center trainers have gained from over 125,000 nonprofit professionals and provides essential guidance that is clear and assessable. This book maintains the vision and voice of the original publication, but is vastly updated and expanded to cover everything today’s nonprofit professionals need to know to create effective programs and competitive grant proposals. It will set new grantseekers on the right track, and challenge experienced nonprofit professionals towards increased rigor in their work. The new edition includes updates of the well-loved checklists from the original and also tackles new and pressing topics. ∙ Understand universal concepts in grantsmanship so you can translate any funder’s application guidelines. ∙ Understand the eight components of a logical case for support, how they fit together and why they must. ∙ Learn to develop meaning outcomes for a “prevention program.” ∙ Develop a simple, useful program evaluation plan by answering 8 essential questions. ∙ Understand the anatomy of a budget and varied ways funders calculate matching fund requirements.∙ Adapt this foundational model for various types of proposals: arts & culture, capacity building, capital projects, general operations, planning, and research.

The curves and the values of their parameters are illustrated by nearly 90 images from a CalComp digital incremental plotter. Suitable for students and researchers in geometry and computer science, the text begins by introducing general properties of curves and types of derived curves. Subsequent chapters apply these properties to conics and polynomials, cubic and quartic curves, algebraic curves of high degree, and transcendental curves. A total of more than 60 special curves are featured, each illustrated with one or more CalComp plots containing curves in up to eight different variants.
