Dialogues (Illustrated)

Seneca
Students of Stoicism will appreciate the further exploration of ideas touched on in Seneca’s Letters From A Stoic: Epistulae Morales AD Lucilium: the Dialogues illustrate the deeply intertwined cosmological and moral arguments of ancient Rome’s chief philosophical alternative to Epicureanism and Skepticism. Seneca’s writings on subjects such as the shortness of life, anger, tranquility of mind, and consolations for grief on the loss of a loved one, are strikingly applicable to our modern world. The Complete Dialogues are collected here: On the Shortness of Life (De Brevitate Vitae) Of a Happy Life (De Vita Beata) Of Providence (De Providentia) On the Firmness of the Wise Man (De Constantia Sapientis) Of Anger (De Ira) Of Leisure (De Otio) Of Peace of Mind (De Tranquillitate Animi) Of Clemency (De Clementia) Also included in this eBook: an original essay, ‘Seneca The Stoic’ and a Seneca image gallery.

Against the Madness of Manu: B.R. Ambedkar's Writings on Brahmanical Patriarchy

B.R. Ambedkar
A Brahman Congress leader suggests that a Dalit chief minister be raped and paid compensation. In his 1916 paper Castes in India , the 25-year-old Ambedkar offered the insight that the caste system thrives by its control of women, and that caste is a product of sustained endogamy. Since then, till the time he piloted the Hindu Code Bill, seeking to radicalise women s rights in the 1950s, Ambedkar deployed a range of arguments to make his case against Brahmanism and its twin, patriarchy. While Ambedkar s original insights have been neglected by sociologists, political theorists and even feminists, they have been kept alive, celebrated and memorialised by Dalit musical troupes and booklets in Maharashtra. Sharmila Rege, in this compelling selection of Ambedkar s writings on the theme of Brahmanical patriarchy, illuminates for us his unprecedented sociological observations. Rege demonstrates how and why Ambedkar laid the base for what was, properly speaking, a feminist take on caste.

Without Guilt and Justice: From Decidophobia to Autonomy

Walter Kaufmann
It is 'Decidophobia', the morbid dread of making fateful decisions -- an ostrich-like defense that drives people to seek refuge in conformity, religion, political movements, and marriage. If decidophobia is the paralysis of our time, what is the alternative? This book is the answer. Already hailed as "a major landmark in modern philosophy", "a bracing mind-stretcher", and "nothing less than an original view of human happiness", this is Dr. Kaufmann's most penetrating and important work. Though calmly reasoned, his arguments deliver with the impact of demolition charges. Love is "corruptible"; The Golden Rule "intolerable"; nobody "deserves" punishment; equality is "decrepit". But alienation is essential to attain the psychic energy and inner resources of The New Integrity. Professor Kaufmann proposes a radically honest life of creative autonomy as the only constructive escape from the chains of guilt and justice.

American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation

Seth David Radwell
Raw and bitter emotions such as anger and resentment have crowded out any logical debate. In this investigative tracing of our nation’s divergent roots, author Seth David Radwell explains that only reasoned analysis and historical perspective can act as salves for the irrational political discourse that is raging at present.      Two disparate Americas have always coexisted, and Radwell discovered that the surprising origin of these dual Americas was not an Enlightenment, but two distinct Enlightenments that have been fiercely competing since the founding of our country. Radwell argues that it is only by embracing Enlightenment principles that we can build a civilized, progressive, and tolerant society. American Schism reveals• the roots of the rifts in America since its founding and what is really dividing red and blue America;• the core issues that underlie all of today’s bickering;• a detailed, effective plan to move forward, commencing what will be a long process of repair and reconciliation.Seth David Radwell changes the nature of the political debate by fighting unreason with reason, allowing Americans to firmly ground their differing points of view in rationality.

Some of My Best Friends: Essays on Lip Service

Tajja IsenTajja Isen
These nine daring essays explore the sometimes troubling and often awkward nature of that discord. Some of My Best Friends takes on the cartoon industry’s pivot away from colorblind casting, the pursuit of diverse representation in the literary world, the law’s refusal to see inequality, and the cozy fictions of nationalism. Isen deftly examines the quick, cosmetic fixes society makes to address systemic problems, and reveals the unexpected ways they can misfire. In the spirit of Zadie Smith, Cathy Park Hong, and Jia Tolentino, Isen interlaces cultural criticism with her lived experience to explore the gaps between what we say and what we do, what we do and what we value, what we value and what we demand.

Voëlvry: The Movement That Rocked South Africa

Pat Hopkins
At a time when South Africa was embroiled in the Border wars, PW Botha was Die Groot Krokodil and Potchefstroom University was debating whether dancing was a sin, an eccentric mix of young Afrikaans artists took to the road and became the voice of their generation. Their goal was the emancipation of Afrikaner youth from the strictures of their authoritarian, patriarchal culture, and they would make it cool to be an Afrikaner. Organised by Vrye Weekblad and Shifty Records, the Voelvry tour featured, among others, Andre Letoit (Koos Kombuis), Johannes Kerkorrel en die Gereformeerde Blues Band, and Bernoldus Niemand (James Phillips) en die Swart Gevaar. This title, based on interviews with participants and observers, reconstructs those heady days. It is a rollicking read that will appeal to those who were there, those who say they were there and those who wish they were there. Illustrated with photographs of the event.

Six Great Dialogues: Apology/Crito/Phaedo/Phaedrus/Symposium/The Republic

Plato
Presented as a series of probing conversations between Socrates and his students and fellow citizens, they form a magnificent dialectical quest that examines enduring political, ethical, metaphysical, and epistemological issues. Here, in one inexpensive edition, are six of Plato's remarkable and revelatory dialogues, each translated by distinguished classical scholar Benjamin Jowett. Apology defends the integrity of Socrates' teachings. Crito discusses respect for the law. Phaedo considers death and the immortality of the soul. Phaedrus explores the psychology of love. Symposium reflects on the ultimate manifestation of the love that controls the world, and The Republic ponders society and the philosopher's role within it. Stimulating, dramatic, and always relevant, these dialogues have profoundly influenced the history of intellectual thought, and offer crucial insight into mystical, aesthetic, and other aspects of Platonic doctrine.

Uske Hisse Ka Pyaar

Ashish Dalal

Relationship between parents and their children, between mother and her son, between a lover and his beloved and so on… so forth… Author has tried to explore all the possible dimensions related to love in various of its forms! The book also explores the chapters of physical intimacy because the author thinks that to understand love, one needs to love!Ashish generally writes about the theme of love in a broader perspective and he presents the dimensions which are the part and parcel of human life in the day-to-day casual world. Who does not fall in love? Who does not come across situations when at the centre of the things is a love marriage? Which household does not see the tremors after a new marriage? These are themes that Author has tried to explore in his book and his narrative has been fantastic. The short stories in this book will not let you set aside and leave - the stories are so enchanting and intriguing that you will just wish to finish the book in a single go.

Bodies on the Line: At the Front Lines of the Fight to Protect Abortion in America

Lauren Rankin
Clinic escorts— everyday volunteers—are prepared to stand up and protect abortion access, as they have for decades, even in the face of terrorism and violence. They have lived, and sometimes died, to ensure that abortion remains not only accessible but also a basic human right. Clinic escorts have fought the “abortion wars” on the front lines, and it is clinic escorts who will win it, by replacing hostility with humanity. Collecting the stories of these brave volunteers from around the country—including the author’s own—interviews with clinic staff and patients, and research and input from abortion rights experts, Bodies on the Line makes a clear case for the right to an abortion as a fundamental part of human dignity, and the stakes facing us all if it ends. Bodies on the Line is a celebration of the crucial, often unsung heroes of abortion access and an inspiring call to defend this basic health care before it’s too late.

Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want

Ruha BenjaminRuha Benjamin

Part memoir, part manifesto, Viral Justice is a sweeping and deeply personal exploration of how we can transform society through the choices we make every day.Vividly recounting her personal experiences and those of her family, Benjamin shows how seemingly minor decisions and habits could spread virally and have exponentially positive effects. She recounts her father's premature death, illuminating the devastating impact of the chronic stress of racism, but she also introduces us to community organizers who are fostering mutual aid and collective healing. Through her brother's experience with the criminal justice system, we see the trauma caused by policing practices and mass imprisonment, but we also witness family members finding strength as they come together to demand justice for their loved ones. And while her own challenges as a young mother reveal the vast inequities of our healthcare system, Benjamin also describes how the support of doulas and midwives can keep Black mothers and babies alive and well.Born of a stubborn hopefulness, Viral Justice offers a passionate, inspiring, and practical vision of how small changes can add up to large ones, transforming our relationships and communities, and helping us build a more just and joyful world.
