Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered, examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceeding rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

1202. Roman o križarskoj opsadi Zadra
Frane Herenda - 2016
The Frenchmen’s modest accounts were used to justify the crimes committed by the crusaders to the wider European public. The sacking of Constantinople symbolised the irreversible weakening of the Byzantine Empire bordering with Muslim nations growing stronger by the day.The first chronicler, Geoffrey de Villehardouin, the nephew of both the French and the English king, Marshal of Champagne, was in charge of negotiating with the Venetians. He is one of the more prominent characters in the novel and represents the highest rung of knights in the crusader army. This is how he described the city walls when he first saw Zadar:And they saw a city enclosed by high wallsand tall towers, knowing that they would never seea more beautiful, better fortified, or wealthier town. When the pilgrims saw it,many were astounded and they would say to each other:“What kind of force would be needed to take such a city by force, other than God himself subduing it?”The second chronicler, Robert de Clari, is a lowborn knight who will also play an important role in the events described in the novel.Zadar is the most powerful city in Dalmatia at the time. It commands an exceptional fleet of warships and merchant vessels. The city has successfully defended against Venice, its sworn enemy since the fall of the Western Roman Empire, on several occasions and brought it before bankruptcy. Zadar has friendly relations with other Italian cities such as Pisa and Ancona, as well as the pirates from Neretva Valley. It accepts heretics (Albigenses and Bogomils), it appoints its own archbishops and is in open dispute with the Pope. But prior to the events described in the novel, Doge Dandolo rises to power in Venice. Ninety-seven years old at the time of the siege, the doge was blinded as a young diplomat to the Byzantine court for seeing things he should have not. The blind old man even bends an experienced diplomat such as Villehardouin to his will.In 1202, a knight called Maius comes to Zadar (Iadera) to find his under-aged daughter who had been kidnapped from their family estate in order to be sold into slavery. He finds employment as a personal guard serving the most powerful noble family in Zadar. Serving the Madie family, he will become entangled in numerous diplomatic and political schemes. The novel about the crusaders' siege of Zadar AD 1202 depicts real events that occurred eight centuries ago, when more than 40 000 thousand French and Venetian knights and 350 siege engines arrived before Zadar on more than 500 ships, later sailing for Constantinople. This unbelievable army for that time period was mustered under the patronage of Pope Innocent III in order to reclaim Jerusalem from Saracen control. However, the crusader army never reached Jerusalem, nor will such an army ever again be mustered, and Christ’s Tomb will remain in Muslim hands to this day. Furthermore, the army was cursed by the Pope for neglecting his warnings and conquering two Christian cities.

The Medicus Codex

Set in the 3rd century CE,

The human conflict reaches a crescendo, underscoring timeless struggles rooted in power, money, sex and survival. Next in the series will be Stein's equally epic novel
Caligula and I
(Balcony 7, 2017), and
Master of the Mint
(Balcony 7, 2018). Cy Stein s mastery of ancient Rome is evident on multiple layers, from geography to coinage, from ancient medicine to historical truths, as well as in his realistic descriptions of personality, everyday life and human struggle. Roma comes to life in all its fantastic and disturbing glory, with angles rarely explored let alone expounded upon in such eloquent detail, fraught with peril and eerily reminiscent of Western civilization today. With great attention to historical accuracy, especially for those in positions of power, The Medicus Codex offers rich enlightenment in a unique and timeless saga. "

Early Roman Warfare: From the Regal Period to the First Punic War
Jeremy Armstrong - 2016
Here Dr Jeremy Armstrong traces the development of Rome's military might from its earliest discernible origins down to the First Punic War. He shows how her armies evolved from ad-hoc forces of warriors organized along clan lines and assembled for the city's survival, to the sophisticated organization of the legions that went on to dominate all of Italy and then (after the period covered) the entire Mediterranean world. The author reviews both the literary sources and the latest archaeological evidence to provide a fresh analysis of Roman military organization, equipment, tactics and strategy. He shows how Rome's military apparatus adapted to meet the changing strategic needs of new enemies and broader ambitions. This study of the origins of the Classical world's most formidable war machine will be welcomed by anyone with an interest in Classical, and especially Roman, military history.

A Place at the Altar: Priestesses in Republican Rome
Meghan J. Diluzio - 2016
Demonstrating that priestesses had a central place in public rituals and institutions, Meghan DiLuzio emphasizes the complex, gender-inclusive nature of Roman priesthood. In ancient Rome, priestly service was a cooperative endeavor, requiring men and women, husbands and wives, and elite Romans and slaves to work together to manage the community's relationship with its gods.Like their male colleagues, priestesses offered sacrifices on behalf of the Roman people, and prayed for the community's well-being. As they carried out their ritual obligations, they were assisted by female cult personnel, many of them slave women. DiLuzio explores the central role of the Vestal Virgins and shows that they occupied just one type of priestly office open to women. Some priestesses, including the flaminica Dialis, the regina sacrorum, and the wives of the curial priests, served as part of priestly couples. Others, such as the priestesses of Ceres and Fortuna Muliebris, were largely autonomous.A Place at the Altar offers a fresh understanding of how the women of ancient Rome played a leading role in public cult.
Household Gods: Private Devotion in Ancient Greece and Rome
Alexandra Sofroniew - 2016
Besides official worship in rural sacred areas and at temples in towns, the ancients kept household shrines with statuettes of different deities that could have a deep personal and spiritual meaning. Roman houses were often filled with images of gods. Gods and goddesses were represented in mythological paintings on walls and in decorative mosaics on floors, in bronze and marble sculptures, on ornate silver dining vessels, and on lowly clay oil lamps that lit dark rooms. Even many modest homes had one or more religious objects that were privately venerated. Ranging from the humble to the magnificent, these small objects could be fashioned in any medium from terracotta to precious metal or stone. Showcasing the collections in the Getty Villa, this book’s emphasis on the spiritual beliefs and practices of individuals promises to make the works of Greek and Roman art more accessible to readers. Compelling representations of private religious devotion, these small objects express personal ways of worshiping that are still familiar to us today. A chapter on contemporary domestic worship further enhances the relevance of these miniature sculptures for modern viewers.

Nashville Beaumont (and the Hyperbole Engine)
Michael Hiebert - 2016
I am twelve years old and few people know I exist. I was born in a secret underground facility in Texas. My twin sister, Providence, was taken away weeks ago. I can't remember her face. I don't even know for sure if I ever saw her after we were born. Likely, they separated us right at birth. But I will find her, and when I do, I will Kidar Frenzid, the man who made me watch as he killed my entire family, one at a time. Some of my memories, I believe, may have been tampered with, but these things I know are true. I WILL find Providence and I WILL kill Kidar Frenzid. And I AM Nashville Beaumont, I am twelve years old, and I... am a weapon." A tale full of twists and high-stakes adventure, Nashville Beaumont takes you all the way from Texas to Argentina, to the moon, and even on to places far off in the galaxy. His faith in himself is pushed way beyond its limits as he struggles to free his sister from the hands of a bloodthirsty madman, discovering along the way that the very world he lives on is in jeopardy. To save it, Nashville must learn to discern his friends from his enemies. Not an easy task when people have been poking around in your mind, changing memories, fabricating truths, and hiding deep, dark lies. Also in this volume is the bonus story, THE HYPERBOLE ENGINE: "I'm on my way back from the Proog System when I spot a place that looks inviting. Not too crowded, not too bright. Somewhere I can just sit, have a drink, and lay low for a while. Of course this is all shattered ten minutes after I take my seat when I'm accosted by three others. They start asking me questions. Questions I don't want to answer, like, 'Where have you been?" And, "Where're you headed?" And of course, the ubiquitous, "What are you looking for?" They guess me to be an ISF agent. I don't tell them if they're right or if they're wrong. I just let it go by. Then they guess that I've been dispatched to figure out what happened to the Hyperbole Engine. That's when it all starts to get predictable as they each pontificate the details of what they think the Hyperbole Engine actually is. It's funny really, because nobody really knows. Well, that's not entirely true. But most people certainly don't know. Right now, though, I'm just hoping to get out of this place in one piece. Oh, and if I manage to get the girl? That's just a bonus."

Constantius II: Usurpers, Eunuchs and the Antichrist
Peter Crawford - 2016
However, as Peter Crawford shows, Constantius deserves to be remembered as a very capable ruler in dangerous, tumultuous times. When Constantine I died in in 337, the twenty-year-old Constantius and his two brothers, Constans and Constantine II, all recieved the title of Augustus to reign as equal co-emperors. In 340, however, Constantine II was killed in a fraternal civil war with Constans. The two remaining brothers shared the Empire for the next ten years, with Constantius ruling Egypt and the Asian provinces, constantly threatened by the Sassanid Persian Empire. However, Constans in turn was killed by the usurper Magentius in 350. Constantius refused to accept this fait accompli, made war on Magentius and defeated him at the battles of Mursa Major and Mons Seleucus, leading him to commit suicide.Constantius, was now sole ruler of the Empire but it was an empire beset by external enemies. Constantius campaigned successfully against the Germanic Alamanni along the Rhine and the Quadi and Sarmatians across the Danube, as well as against the Persians in the East, though with more mixed results. In 360 he elevated his cousin Julian to the rank of Caesar (effectively deputy emperor) and left him to govern the West, while he concentrated on the Persian threat. Julian defeated the Alamanni in battle but was then proclaimed Augustus by his troops. Constantius was marching back to meet this threat to his rear when he fell ill and died. Having done so much to defend and preserve the empire, his dying act was to attempt to avert further civil war by declaring Julian his rightful heir.
Sea Eagles of Empire: The Classis Britannica and the Battles for Britain
Simon Elliott - 2016
Although the former has been studied extensively, less has been written and understood about the naval forces of the Roman empire and, in particular, the regional navies which actively participated in most military operations and policed the seas and rivers of the Empire. Until the mid-third century, in a British context, this navy was the Classis Britannica—a strong fighting force in its own right. The composition, ship types, roles, tactics, and technology have never been studied at length. Here Elliot tells the story of this illustrious naval force in their metal-beaked galleys and their exploits defeating enemies of the Empire and keeping the peace around the British Isles.
