A Practical Guide to Irish Spirituality

Lora O'Brien - 2012
It is conversational, and informal, and a little bit fun to read. It is about looking at things around you – past, present, and future – and asking the important questions. Perhaps the only really important question: Why? This is a book for all of us who are looking, searching for a way to plant our feet firmly on Irish ground, and take responsibility for what we are doing here, for our place in the big picture that is Ireland today. You don’t have to be Pagan, or New Age, or Magical, or Spiritual, to read this book. You don’t even have to be Irish. To get the full benefit, you do have to be open minded, willing to learn something about yourself, about Ireland, and maybe even about your place in this land. This is also a practical guide and a work book, and that is important to understand before you buy. There are more questions within these pages than there are definitive answers. Understand that this work is up to you, and nobody else will take responsibility for the work you need to be doing. There is genuine guidance though, some funny bits, and more than a couple of pokes and prods to help you on your way.Written by a woman of this land, called Witch by some, Druid by others, and Bean Draoí by herself, when she has to go by something other than “that O’Brien one”. Sharing experience and knowledge, and suggestions for how you might get to where you need to be – examining how things used to be done here, and what can be useful and relevant to us as we bring ourselves forward through our Irish Spirituality.

Cat has compiled and expanded on the common queries (So, do you worship the sun?) as well as the day-to-day aspects of Druidry as a lived path. She reveals how Druidry is constantly evolving to be relevant and accessible in the modern world.

Jesus Through Pagan Eyes: Bridging Neopagan Perspectives with a Progressive Vision of Christ

The Wakeful World: Animism, Mind and the Self in Nature

Emma Restall Orr - 2012
In The Wakeful World, Emma Restall Orr argues that this is based on the misrepresentation, drawn in crayon, that each tree and stone has its own Christian-like immortal soul. Taking the reader on a philosophical adventure, Restall Orr explores the heritage of Western thought with precision, enthusiasm and sensitivity, considering how soul, spirit, mind and consciousness have been understood through millennia. Challenging the prevailing worldviews of materialism and dualism, she presents animism as a radically different, yet mature and coherent philosophy. Providing deep green ethics with a wholly rational metaphysical foundation, The Wakeful World is a compelling view of the nature of existence and the experience of reality, giving solid ground for the now necessary journey to a sustainable world. This original and lively book brings back animism - a most useful range of ideas which reductivists have somewhat wildly abandoned during the last century - into focus once more just when it is badly needed to cure current confusions about mind and body - Dr Mary Midgley, Moral Philosopher"

New Paths to Animal Totems: Three Alternative Approaches to Creating Your Own Totemism

Lupa - 2012
In "New Paths to Animal Totems", author Lupa provides a new approach to totemism that broadens the foundations, theories, and practices beyond the typical pseudo-Native-American animal totem book. Exploring three different models of totem work - correspondences, archetypal, and bioregional - you will make your relationships with your totems stronger and more personalized. Whether you are new to totemic work or are looking for some novel spiritual direction, Lupa addresses questions about what totems are, why they aren't restricted to one's geographical location, and how to practise totem traditions with cultural sensitivity. With hands-on rituals and meditations, connect to your animal totems in a way that brings you strength, renewal, and wisdom. From the author: I've written a great deal for people of an intermediate to advanced experience level, but this time I'm offering something for a more general audience, to include people who may never have even heard of totems before! I've taken my totemic practice of 15 years and broken it out into three different working models of animal totemism. The Correspondences Model takes the idea of totems of the four directions further, explaining how to mesh animal totems with any of a number of personalized correspondence systems, whether pre-existing or self-created. The Archetypal Model draws on Jung's original conception of archetypes as symbolic expressions of internal impulses and instincts, linking the internal landscape with external animals as living symbols. The Bioregional Model connects people to the totems of their local area, as well as the Land itself. To give readers, especially those new to totemism, some guidance, I've offered a variety of exercises, meditations, and ritual ideas to play with along with the theory. And to illustrate the material further, there are examples seeded throughout the text. However, as with all my books, there's plenty for the more experienced practitioner to play with, and none of it is strictly "by the book", as it were. AND, for those of you who have read my previous works, there's plenty of new material and ideas to work with!So whether you're a first-time reader of mine, or you've read my previous work, I'd be curious as to what you think of this newest endeavor!

Witchfather - A Life of Gerald Gardner Vol2. from Witch Cult to Wicca

Philip Heselton - 2012
From Witch Cult to Wicca by Philip Heselton From the author of the highly acclaimed "Wiccan Roots," this is the first full-length biography of Gerald Brosseau Gardner (1884-1964) - a very personal tale of the man who single-handedly brought about the revival of witchcraft in England in the mid 20th Century. From Gerald's birth into an old family of wealthy Liverpool merchants, through an unconventional upbringing by his flamboyant governess in the resorts of the Mediterranean and Madeira, it tells how, having taught himself to read, his life was changed by finding a book on spiritualism. During a working life as a tea and rubber planter in Ceylon, Borneo and Malaya, he came to know the native people and was invited to their secret rituals. But it was only on his retirement to England, settling on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, that destiny took him firmly by the hand. Through various twists and turns involving naturist clubs and a strange esoteric theatre, he became friends with a group of people who eventually revealed their true identity - they were members of a surviving witch coven. One evening in 1939, as the hounds of war were being unleashed, he was initiated into the 'witch cult' by these people, who called themselves 'the Wica'. Gardner was overwhelmed by the experience and was determined that the 'witch cult' should survive. This book chronicles his efforts over the remaining quarter century of his life to ensure not only that it survived but that it would become the significant player on the world religious stage that it now is - "the only religion that England has ever given the world," in the words of Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at the University of Bristol, who calls it ..". a very fine book: humane, intelligent, compassionate, shrewd, and based upon a colossal amount of primary research." Born in 1946, Philip Heselton is a geographer and retired local government officer who has written extensively on Earth Mysteries and our spiritual relationship with the landscape. He has also carried out extensive research into the story of the modern witchcraft revival, chronicled in his books, "Wiccan Roots" and "Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration." Hutton has described him as being ..". the most interesting, valuable and enjoyable author who has yet written on what is becoming one of the greatest riddles in the history of modern religion: the origins of pagan witchcraft. ... Nobody has ever done more than Philip Heselton to reveal the world of magic, paganism, naturism and faerie that lay behind the garden gates of inter-war English suburban villas; and perhaps only he could have done it at all."

The Gospel of the Phoenix: Another Revelation of Jesus

Stifyn Emrys - 2012
Fans of Kahlil Gibran and students of history alike will enjoy this the story of a Jewish teacher trained in Egyptian healing and mysticism who set about spreading a gospel of humility, servanthood and renewal. His mission? To reveal the hidden kingdom of heaven that is both within and all around us. His method? Retracing the footsteps of his heavenly father, the Egyptian god Osiris, and honoring his divine mother while immersing his followers in the way of forgiveness, humility and wisdom. The themes in this work will be familiar to Christians and non-Christians alike, but are presented from a perspective that readers from all backgrounds will find fresh and provocative. The intent mirrors that of the author of Luke: to create what he described as an orderly account based on numerous sources. A similar task has been taken up by numerous authors over the centuries, ranging from the Tatian, who produced a second-century harmony of the gospels known as the Diatesseron, to Thomas Jefferson, who created the so-called Jefferson Bible. The Gospel of the Phoenix follows in this tradition, and is written to both inspire and challenge the reader. It acknowledges the profound influence of ancient mystery religions on Jesus’ life and mission and emphasizes his role as a teacher, sage and healer. It also sheds light on several elements of what has come to be a familiar story. Who betrayed him? Was he married? Which of his companions did he trust with his most valued secrets, and whose motives did he doubt? The Gospel of the Phoenix provides surprising and sometimes challenging answers to these and other questions.

Mermaids, Sylphs, Gnomes, and Salamanders: Dialogues with the Kings and Queens of Nature

William R. Mistele - 2012
Yet each of the four elemental kingdoms offers great gifts to humanity, if we are willing to recognize that the psychological and spiritual qualities they embody are already inherent in human nature.Mermaids dwell in the oceans, lakes, and rivers. They offer love and sharing, a sense of wonder, beauty, and innocence. Sylphs roam the sky; they represent harmony, balance, and the attainment of freedom. Gnomes live underground. Their quiet inner wisdom banishes depression and sorrow. Salamanders dwell in volcanoes and vast caverns of magma beneath the earth. They offer the power of intense heat to refine, transform, and integrate. Who are these mysterious creatures of water, air, earth, and fire? Author William Mistele has devoted a significant portion of his life to finding out.Addressing the perennial questions Why are we here? What is the deepest purpose of life? What are our options?, Mermaids, Sylphs, Gnomes, and Salamanders takes the reader directly into the realms of these spirits, telling stories from their perspective. Weaving together fairy tales and poems, thoughtful analysis, and meditative exercises, Mistele illuminates the qualities these beings have mastered and humanity must begin to embrace: empathy, an inner peace with the universe, a divine level of sensuality, and a love that is everywhere in every moment.

Requiem for a Phantom God

Stifyn Emrys - 2012
Yet the crucial question involves not the existence of deity, but what kind of deity might exist. Can we eliminate certain options and leave ourselves free to explore others? In "Requiem for a Phantom God," author Stifyn Emrys argues that we can. Any consideration of the divine should rule out what C.S. Lewis termed "nonsense." Self-contradictory portraits of God are not only meaningless, but they have the potential to do great harm - and they have over the course of human history."Requiem for a Phantom God" serves as an epitaph for just such a god of nonsense. It identifies the core philosophical problem: the desire of humanity to believe in an all-powerful deity who is at, at the same time, entirely "good." This desire, however, is destined to remain unfulfilled, because these two concepts simply cannot be reconciled. Once humanity realizes this, we can choose the kind of god we wish to believe in: immanent or transcendent ... if, indeed, we wish to put our faith in a god at all."Requiem" discusses the abuses and pitfalls of faith, and whether it is possible to speak of a faith that is not blind. It addresses modern and historical examples of religious abuse and suggests they tell us about the doctrines that support them. Written in the tradition of Christopher Hitchens, "Requiem for a Phantom God" is in the second publication this year from writer, educator and philosopher Stifyn Emrys. His previous book, "The Gospel of the Phoenix: Another Revelation of Jesus," is also available.

Thracian Magic - Past & Present

Georgi Mishev - 2012
This unique and ground-breaking book combines scholarship and practice, as Georgi Mishev provides a thorough and detailed overview of the magical practices of Bulgaria and the surrounding Balkan countries, tracing them from the ancient world through Christian and Islamic overlays to their existing forms.Drawing on numerous ancient sources including the Hittite ritual texts, Greek Magical Papyri, Derweni Papyrus and many others, the author demonstrates the continuity of magical practice in Balkan communities for millennia. At the same time he also presents a huge wealth of folklore and practices from the Balkan peninsula never previously available in English. The enduring worship of the Great Goddess is considered in depth, both as figures such as Hekate, Artemis and Bendis, as well as in forms such as the Mother of the Sun, the Mountain Mother, the Virgin Mistress of fire and the She-Wolf, and her transmission into various saints such as the Mother of God, Fiery Marina, Petka and Nedelya.Key figures including Orpheus, Musaeus, Eumolpus, Zalmoxis, Rhesus and the nymph Thrake, and their roles in the transmission of the ancient mysteries are discussed to help demonstrate the distinctive flavour found in folk practices of the Balkan Peninsula.By exploring the contrasting roles of the healer (as valued member of the community) and the magician (as necessary evil) in Bulgarian traditional culture, together with their continued practice through family lines, the author demonstrates the way that traditional practices have survived and even flourished alongside the Christian church in a way not seen in western Europe.Chapter Keywords: Thracian Magic, Bulgaria, Balkans, Rituals, Orpheus, Orphic, Musaeus, Eumolpus, Zalmoxis, Rhesus, Prophetess of Dionysos, Thrake, Mystery Tradition, Secret Knowledge, Healer, Healing, Magician, Concept of the Goddess, Mother of the sun, Mountain Mother, The Virgin Mistress of Fire, She-Wolf

Vectors of the Counter-Initiation: The Course and Destiny of Inverted Spirituality

Charles Upton - 2012
In his prophetic masterpiece The Reign of Quantity and the Signs of the Times he classed the worst of these spiritualities as examples of the Counter-Initiation. Anti-Tradition-secularism and materialism-opposes religion; Counter-Tradition inverts it; and the esoteric essence of Counter-Tradition is the Counter-Initiation. The author expands on this concept, recognizing the action of the Counter-Initiation in such areas as the politicizing of the interfaith movement, the anti-human tendencies in the environmental movement, the growing interest in magic and sorcery, the involvement of the intelligence communities in the fields of UFO investigation and psychedelic research, the history of Templarism and Freemasonry, and the de-Islamicization of the famous Sufi poet, Jalaluddin Rumi. Vectors of the Counter-Initiation is conceived of as a sequel to The System of Antichrist: Truth and Falsehood in Postmodernism and the New Age [Sophia Perennis, 2001]. The Counter-Initiation has six main features: syncretism; inverted hierarchy; deviated esoterism; the granting of the temporal transmission of spiritual lore precedence over the vertical descent of Revelation; the reduction of religion to utilitarianism (magic) and esoterism to a purely technical knowledge (Promethean spirituality); and the mis-application of the norms of the individual spiritual Path to the supposed spiritual evolution of the collective. The Counter-Initiation is the ego's idea of spirituality. It appears in the Old Testament as the Serpent in the garden, Cain's murder of Abel, the "sons of God who looked upon the daughters of men and found them fair," the Tower of Babel, the degeneration of Sodom, and the magicians of Pharaoh whom Moses defeated. In the New Testament it is personified by Judas, and in the Qur'an by the figure of as-Samiri, who forged the Golden Calf, and the angels Harut and Marut-testers of man by God's design-who taught magic to the human race in Babylon. For both traditions, it is destined to culminate in Antichrist. This book brings together two schools of thought: the Traditionalists or Perennialists (writers on comparative religion and traditional metaphysics) and the conspiracy theorists who are investigating the origin, nature, and plans of the New World Order. The NWO researchers can throw a penetrating light on the social and political dangers presently threatening the Perennialists, while the Perennialists can provide these researchers with a deeper and wider spiritual context for their vision of human evil. In Guenon's time the Counter-Initiation appeared in terms of this or that secret society operating in the shadowy underworld of European occultism; it has now come up into the open, and moved inexorably toward the centers of global power. In the words of American Eastern Orthodox priest Seraphim Rose, "in our time Satan has walked naked into human history."

Bringing together the threads of disparate subcultures, social movements, spiritual paths and characters, "Bull of Heaven" weaves Buczynski's life into a tapestry that encompasses the history of contemporary Paganism and the occult in New York City. And in so doing, it offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of GLBT men and women whose heretofore untold contributions helped to shape the face of contemporary Paganism. Tracing Old Norse Cosmology: The World Tree, Middle Earth and the Sun in Archeaological Perspectives

Anders Andrén - 2012
The rituals, myths, and narratives of pre-Christian Scandinavia have been studied and interpreted in detail relying mainly on Christian Icelandic literature from the Middle Ages. Here, Anders Andrén offers a long-term perspective on Old Norse cosmology and argues that the fundamental ideas of an ordered universe, time, and space in Old Norse religion can be studied in a dialogue between archaeology and the Icelandic narrative tradition. Ideas about the world tree, middle earth, and the sun can be traced in images and material culture from Scandinavian prehistory. By combining the prehistoric representations with the later written record the author presents a fresh and nuanced study of the fascinating Old Norse world.Due to the rich and varied Icelandic literature from the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries, Old Norse religion is considered one of the best-known pre-Christian religions in Europe. This collection of essays, however, explains via archaeology that Old Norse religion, in fact, transformed into a hybrid culture. Arguing that representations of cosmological elements—such as the sun, the worldtree, and the concept of Midgard or “Middle Earth”—can be traced to images and material culture throughout Scandinavian prehistory, this thorough study uncovers the pagan origins of Old Norse religion.
