The American Nurse

Carolyn Jones - 2012
Enlisting the talents of Carolyn Jones, an award-winning filmmaker and creator of numerous photography books, and her producer, Lisa Frank, the project set out to capture and share the images and stories of nurses from all across America and to celebrate the role of the nurse in this country’s health care system. In The American Nurse, readers are invited to think about nurses in a way that they may never have before, unless they have been under a nurse’s care. This body of work will inspire audiences to focus their attention on the nurses who serve as healers in their community, and whose wealth of knowledge needs to be tapped in order to solve today’s pressing health care issues. The challenge of creating a rich portrait of nursing in America began with a map of the U.S. and a red pen. Carolyn Jones wanted to cover as much territory as possible, with the hope that along the way she would capture stories touching on the kinds of issues that nurses are dealing with in every corner of the country. Some of the issues might be specific to a particular area, like the nurses who were charged with evacuating patients in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Others would be universal no matter where Jones visited, such as nurses providing emotional support to patients and families to help get them through the toughest times in their lives. The journey began in New York City, where Carolyn met nurses working in the district with the highest rate of hunger in the U.S., as well as nurses doing health outreach to at-risk teens. She moved southward, stopping in Baltimore to meet nurses on the cutting edge of healthcare and nurse educators training the next generation, and then travelled to San Diego, where she met nurses at a VA hospital that is home to the largest concentration of veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. In Louisiana, she went behind bars and met nurses dealing with prisoners; and in Riverton, Wyoming she learned about the health needs of the Native American population there. Having crisscrossed the country, from rural Eastern Kentucky to Florida to New Orleans to Nebraska to Wisconsin to San Francisco and Chicago, Jones presents a compelling portrait of a key figure on the front lines of health care today: the American nurse.

But most important, she takes the “scary” out of hospice. She makes it clear that choosing hospice creates the best possible world for the dying and the people who love them…that terminal illness does not necessitate living every day as though it is your last. Rather… hospice can create a world of possibilities for each and every day that is left to us—just like in real life.”—Kay Degenhardt, KDI“When I was first diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma over three years ago, it had the face of my mortality on it…I was blessed to come across a copy of Cathy’s manuscript of her life’s work in hospice… [which] made me laugh while I cried, but more importantly, Cathy’s compassion and her patients’ courage gave me hope and inspiration when I needed it most. I recommend that anyone…read this!”—Joan Rose Ellsworth

Beyond the Checklist: What Else Health Care Can Learn from Aviation Teamwork and Safety

Suzanne Gordon - 2012
healthcare system is now spending many millions of dollars to improve patient safety and inter-professional practice. Nevertheless, an estimated 100,000 patients still succumb to preventable medical errors or infections every year. How can health care providers reduce the terrible financial and human toll of medical errors and injuries that harm rather than heal?Beyond the Checklist argues that lives could be saved and patient care enhanced by adapting the relevant lessons of aviation safety and teamwork. In response to a series of human-error caused crashes, the airline industry developed the system of job training and information sharing known as Crew Resource Management (CRM). Under the new industry-wide system of CRM, pilots, flight attendants, and ground crews now communicate and cooperate in ways that have greatly reduced the hazards of commercial air travel. The coauthors of this book sought out the aviation professionals who made this transformation possible. Beyond the Checklist gives us an inside look at CRM training and shows how airline staff interaction that once suffered from the same dysfunction that too often undermines real teamwork in health care today has dramatically improved. Drawing on the experience of doctors, nurses, medical educators, and administrators, this book demonstrates how CRM can be adapted, more widely and effectively, to health care delivery. The authors provide case studies of three institutions that have successfully incorporated CRM-like principles into the fabric of their clinical culture by embracing practices that promote common patient safety knowledge and skills. They infuse this study with their own diverse experience and collaborative spirit: Patrick Mendenhall is a commercial airline pilot who teaches CRM; Suzanne Gordon is a nationally known health care journalist, training consultant, and speaker on issues related to nursing; and Bonnie Blair O'Connor is an ethnographer and medical educator who has spent more than two decades observing medical training and teamwork from the inside.

Get the Life You Want: Finding Meaning and Purpose through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Freddy Jackson Brown - 2012
In this book psychologist Dr Freddy Jackson Brown reveals that many of our difficulties are self-imposed. By following the principles of a breakthrough approach, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, he shows that we can all live a happier, less fearful and more purposeful life. The book explains the key principles of ACT - accepting rather than avoiding difficult experiences, discovering how to defuse harmful thoughts (often through changes in the way we use language), focusing on the values that give your life meaning and committing to changes in behaviour. The ground-breaking aspect of this therapy is its recognition that lasting happiness can only be found when we identify the core values that are most profoundly important to us. The book begins by explaining that values give meaning and dignity to the difficult times we may face and provide a guiding star by which we can steer a path through life, ensuring that our choices are consistent with who we truly are.The book goes on to explain how we can determine our values and understand them, and then put our values into action in practical ways throughout every aspect of our life. Dr Jackson Brown shows us how to set long-term goals based on our values and shows how exploring the issues that seem to most distress us can provide clues as to what truly matters in our lives. Rich with case studies and practical exercises, this inspiring book will lead you to the life you truly wish to lead.
