Changes of Mind: A Holonomic Theory of the Evolution of Consciousness
Jenny Wade - 1996
Assuming a new paradigm reality, the author opens and extends the field of developmental psychology in ways that structure, destructure, and then restructure the subjective experience of time, space, subject, and object.Wade's theory concerns the development of consciousness per se--not merely its derivatives, such as cognition, social development, and affect--and its neurological bases, something no other developmental theory has taken into account. Using data from a wide range of empirical studies and neurological research, Wade shows that awareness considerably predates birth--probably even conception--and lasts after death, supporting the idea that the self exists outside the boundaries of linear time and a physical body. This book represents a major leap forward in psychological theory and a groundbreaking approach to human perception and being in the world.
Would You Believe?
Tom Harpur - 1996
At the same time they find that having no faith has left a yawning spiritual void in their lives. In Would You Believe?, Tom Harpur deals with the tough questions raised today by real people, such as how to reconcile the presence of evil, pain and suffering with belief in a loving God.The challenge we face, Harpur writes, is not to find a substitute but to rediscover God under the encrustation of ritual and doctrine that the various faiths have built up. We can go beyond all narrow-minded claims of being the only true religion, the only correct interpreter of God, he says, when we understand that all faiths are simply routes towards God that humans have been inspired to create. We can use our intelligence to believe in God, rather than deny it in order to swallow notions devised for a different people and a different time. From the Hardcover edition.

The Great Apparitions of Mary: An Examination of the Twenty-Two Supranormal Appearances
Ingo Swann - 1996
The places and the principals involved change, but the messages calling people to turn from lives of violence and sin and to seek repentance are remarkably similar. By focusing on the most widely known and documented appearances and presenting them in chronological order, the power of the events and the messages emerge in a powerful way.Swann shows how advances in science have placed the apparitions in a more intriguing light. One of the historic challenges concerning them was how could something which was not there be there in a way that registered on the eye mechanisms? The discovery of holography, where images that appear to be three-dimensional, having bulk, shape and mass, can be photographed, have provided an analogy that enlarges our perception of the physical laws and challenges the skeptics' verdict of hallucination.

The Lost Language of Symbolism Volume II
Harold Bayley - 1996
Symbols tell a story but we must first know how to read them. Otherwise, one just sees a picture without the intended message. This book produces the key to understanding many important symbols. For centuries emblems and symbols have been used for trademarks, watermarks, and decorative purposes. These were covered well in Volume One. Volume Two moves into many sacred and mystical areas, covering such things as the heavenly twins, the white horse, the sign of the cross, fire and fire cults, standing stones and dolmens, gardens, fruits & flowers, the tree of life, Via Dolorosa and Jesus, and ends with a conclusion that brings both volumes together. There is a wealth of information to be found in this book because Bayley was a true master in etymology and the origins of words. The drawings are quite simple since they're either the earliest known version of the symbol or the artist was not that elaborate, but the information contained herein is unsurpassed. This book stands well on its own and Volume One does not have to be read first in order to understand it.
