My Own Country: A Doctor's Story

Abraham Verghese - 1994
Nestled in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, the town of Johnson City had always seemed exempt from the anxieties of modern American life. But when the local hospital treated its first AIDS patient, a crisis that had once seemed an urban problem had arrived in the town to stay. Working in Johnson City was Abraham Verghese, a young Indian doctor specializing in infectious diseases. Dr. Verghese became by necessity the local AIDS expert, soon besieged by a shocking number of male and female patients whose stories came to occupy his mind, and even take over his life. Verghese brought a singular perspective to Johnson City: as a doctor unique in his abilities; as an outsider who could talk to people suspicious of local practitioners; above all, as a writer of grace and compassion who saw that what was happening in this conservative community was both a medical and a spiritual emergency."

She argues that it is not too late to take action to prevent the further onslaught of viruses and microbes, and offers possible solutions for a healthier future.

Not All of Us Are Saints: A Doctor's Journey with the Poor

David Hilfiker - 1994
David Hilfiker's award-winning first book, Healing the Wounds, broke the silence surrounding the everyday practice of medicine and established him as a unique figure within the medical profession, "strikingly honest, courageous, and clear-sighted" (Oliver Sacks). In 1983, Dr. Hilfiker took on the greatest challenge of his career: he left his practice in rural Minnesota, moved with his wife and three young children to an inner-city neighborhood in Washington, D.C., and entered the world of poverty medicine. Not All of Us Are Saints vividly depicts what it means for a physician to confront the health problems of ravaged ghetto communities, for a middle-class white man to face the stark contrasts between poverty and privilege, and for a human being to admit his own spiritual limitations. Through dramatic accounts of his own cases, Dr. Hilfiker shows us a medical universe in which doctors are almost as powerless as their patients, where even the most commonplace medical solutions - bed rest, daily dosages, diet - are of little use to people without homes or family or food. This unflinching, deeply moving story is about the painful limits of care and caregivers, but it is also about the limitless rewards of faith and compassion - a moving testament to what is possible here and now.

The information contained in BCN is both scientifically backed with references and clinically proven in the hospital with patients. This information helps cancer patients to improve quality and quantity of life. BCN had been translated into Japanese and Chinese and is being translated into Korean. BCN had become a home study continuing education course for registered nurses. BCN 2001 version will contain a 72-minute audio CD version in response to the requests from tired cancer patients who said they needed and audio version of the book to get started. BCN had sold 110,000 copies in 7 years in print, which is impressive for small publishers. Cruel Compassion: Psychiatric Control of Society's Unwanted

Thomas Szasz - 1994
Reexamining psychiatric interventions from a cultural-historical and political-economic perspective, Szasz demonstrates that the main problem that faces mental health policy makers today is adult dependency. Millions of Americans, diagnosed as mentally ill, are drugged and confined by doctors for noncriminal conduct, go legally unpunished for the crimes they commit, and are supported by the state - not because they are sick, but because they are unproductive and unwanted.Obsessed with the twin beliefs that misbehavior is a medical disorder and that the duty of the state is to protect adults from themselves, we have replaced criminal-punitive sentences with civil-therapeutic 'programs.' The result is the relentless loss of individual liberty, erosion of personal responsibility, and destruction of the security of persons and property - symptoms of the transformation of a Constitutional Republic into a Therapeutic State, unconstrained by the rule of law. Szasz shows convincingly that not until we separate therapy from coercion--much as the founders separated theology from coercion--shall we be able to get a handle on our seemingly intractable psychiatric and social problems. No contemporary thinker has done more than Thomas Szasz to expose the myths and misconceptions surrounding insanity and the practice of psychiatry. Now, in Cruel Compassion, he gives us a sobering look at some of our most cherished notions about our humane treatment of society's unwanted, and perhaps more importantly, about ourselves as a compassionate and democratic people.

Childbed Fever: A Scientific Biography of Ignaz Semmelweis

K. Codell Carter - 1994
Childbed Fever makes the Semmelweis story available to a general audience, while placing his life, and his discovery, in the context of his times. In 1846 Vienna, as what would now be called a head resident of obstetrics, Semmelweis confronted the terrible reality of childbed fever, which killed prodigious numbers of women throughout Europe and America. In May 1847 Semmelweis was struck by the realization that, in his clinic, these women had probably been infected by the decaying remains of human tissue. He believed that infection occurred because medical personnel did not wash their hands thoroughly after conducting autopsies in the morgue. He immediately began requiring everyone working in his clinic to wash their hands in a chlorine solution. The mortality rate fell to about one percent. While everyone at the time rejected his account of the cause of the disease because his theory was fundamentally inconsistent with existing medical beliefs about how diseases were transmitted, in time Semmelweis was proven to be correct. His work led to the adoption of a new way of thinking about disease, thus helping to create an entirely new theory - the etiological standpoint - that still dominates medicine today.

Instant Anatomy

Robert H. Whitaker - 1994
The clever structure of the information facilitates accurate and speedy retrieval of anatomical facts, and is very popular with students. Two features make the book especially useful. First, it stresses anatomical relationships, which are even more important now with the increased use of cross-sectional scanning and computer-generated reconstructional imaging. Second, it allows structures such as blood vessels and nerves to be seen in their entirety instead of regionally, as they are so often described in standard textbooks. The section on the autonomic nervous system has been expanded in this second edition to meet the needs of students who often find this area of knowledge difficult. Instant Anatomy is ideal for preclinical students with its dictionary-style format. It facilitates rapid revision for the MRCS and AFRCS candidate. It will also be extremely useful for clinicans who need to remind themselves of anatomical facts at all stages of their careers, and for other groups such as physiotherapists and radiographers.

How and Why We Age

Leonard Hayflick - 1994
. . . Now comes a most fascinating book, insightful and scholarly, to provide what answers have emerged so far."--San Francisco ChronicleHere, at last, preeminent cell biologist Leonard Hayflick presents the truth about human aging. Based on more than thirty years of pioneering research in the field, How and Why We Age explores not only how our major biological systems change as we grow older, but also examines the intangible alterations in our modes of thinking and feeling, our moods and sexual desires, our personality traits and our memories. With the immediacy of the latest scientific discoveries, Dr. Hayflick explains how aging affects every part of the body, and dispels many of the most persistent aging myths, to show that: * Hearts do not naturally get weaker with age.* Regular exercise and a low-fat diet won't slow aging.* Curing cancer would only add two years to the average sixty-five-year-old American life. Curing heart disease, however would add fourteen years.* Only five percent of people over the age of sixty-five are in nursing homes* No human has lived--or probably can live--past 120 years.Gracefully written, clearly organized, and packed with essential facts and statistics, How and Why We Age is a landmark study of the aging process for readers of all ages."Written in clear, nontechnical language, it is an excellent introduction to the scientific and demographic literature on this multifaceted subject."--Nature
