Great Pets!: An Extraordinary Guide to Usual and Unusal Family Pets

Sara Stein - 1976
Over the years she's raised a monkey, a coyote, and a horned toad, and she came within a heartbeat of taking home a wallaby. In this mammoth pet encyclopedia she identifies dozens of unusual and not-so-unusual critters that make great pets in the house, in the yard, and in the wild. Stein even suggests temporary pets kids can bring home to observe overnight and return to their natural habitat the next morning.Stein's recommendations suit every domestic situation. Skunks, for example, work well in an apartment. A big backyard is ideal for keeping a goat or two. If parents don't want a pet running through the house, tarantulas are happy in a nice glass vivarium. And if indoor pets are out of the question, Stein explains how to befriend the pigeons in the park or the rabbits in the yard. For all her enthusiasm, Stein takes a common-sense approach to pets. Each entry discusses diet, housing, special problems, life span, and just how tame you can expect the pet to become. She also tells you whom to call if you wind up with a sick snake or an angry parrot. Stein devotes an entire chapter to which type of vivarium, aquarium, serpentarium, cage, or hutch is best suited to which creature. She even explains how to build an inexpensive-but-comfortable habitat.Whether you like them furry, slithery, slimy, or scaly; whether you want one that swims, crawls, leaps, flies, or hardly moves at all, you'll find a pet in this book suited to every family's taste.

Pursuit of Excellence

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - 1976
Accomplishing this objective requires a diligent and serious effort in all aspects of life-spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical. The Pursuit of Excellence challenge is intended to strengthen adherence to gospel principles in themselves to church members [and non church members] who elect to participate. Each person who undertakes the Pursuit of Excellence challenge should so closely pattern [their] lives to the sacred and enduring example of the Savior, Jesus Christ, that the basic principles of gospel living will be incorporated into his life for eternity. "Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life though his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come" (D&C 130:18-19). Nothing is more invigoration than working hard to fulfill a noble and worthwhile purpose. Some of the goals of the pursuit of Excellence are: to gain and strengthen a personal conviction of the reality of God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost; to live with compassion and integrity with our minds; to read tin inspired words of men touched with the Spirit of God; to search for good an uplifting thoughts and deeds of mankind; and to realize the importance of a physical body and the neccessity of giving it proper care. :And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things." (D&C 88:67). To the person who becomes absorbed in achieving eternal goals, life becomes more abundant. The approach describes in the accompanying pages can be accomplished by anyone who has an honest desire to improve himself so that he can serve others more effectively. This is an exciting opportunity to find the power and strength of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read the following pages carefully. Be honest and soul-searching as you select your won goals.

It is the combined work of seven of the world's strongest grandmasters: Larry Evans, Paul Keres, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Bent Larsen, Tigran Petrosian and Lajos Portisch. For example, Bent Larsen used wild, unorthodox attacking lines, whereas Petrosian, who was capable of attacking when he wanted to, preferred to sniff out his opponent's chances and wait for the opponent to attack unsoundly and fall upon his own sword.
