The book is fully revised with a new introduction. As Ram Dass puts it, "When the faith is strong enough it is sufficient just to be. It’s a journey towards simplicity, towards quietness, towards a kind of joy that is not in time. It’s a journey that has taken us from primary identification with our body and our psyche, on to an identification with God, and ultimately beyond identification."

The Myth of Freedom and the Way of Meditation

Chögyam Trungpa - 1976
But what are the sources of these goals and desires? If they arise from ignorance, habitual patterns, and negative emotions, is the freedom to pursue these goals true freedom—or is it just a myth?  In this book, Chögyam Trungpa explores the meaning of freedom in the profound context of Tibetan Buddhism. He shows how our attitudes, preconceptions, and even our spiritual practices can become chains that bind us to repetitive patterns of frustration and despair. He also explains how meditation can bring into focus the causes of frustration, and how these negative forces can aid us in advancing toward true freedom. Trungpa's unique ability to express the essence of Buddhist teachings in the language and imagery of contemporary American culture makes this book one of the best sources of the Buddhist doctrine ever written. This edition also contains a foreword by Pema Chödrön, a close student of Chögyam Trungpa and the best-selling author of When Things Fall Apart.

The Genesee Diary: Report from a Trappist Monastery

Henri J.M. Nouwen - 1976
His reflections on daily life with the Trappists are funny, wise, and often profound--resembling Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk, but a bit less thematically structured and more down to earth. Nouwen's goal is simply to record what it's like to pass the time in a cloistered community. He spends part of his stay there reading Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which helps awaken a hunger for a richer experience of life that he subsequently satisfies by learning to slow down. In his first week at the monastery, Nouwen writes, "I have so many ideas I want to write about, so many books I want to read, so many skills I want to learn--motorcycle maintenance is now one of them--and so many things I want to say to others now or later, that I do not SEE that God is all around me and that I am always trying to see what is ahead, overlooking him who is so close." Then, looking forward to being planted in one place among the Trappists, he writes, "Maybe I need to get stuck," to learn to see God. He does, and he does. --Michael Joseph Gross

Dionysos: Archetypal Image of Indestructible Life

Karl Kerényi - 1976
In myth and image, in visionary experience and ritual representation, the Greeks possessed a complete expression of indestructible life, the essence of Dionysos. In this work, the noted mythologist and historian of religion Carl Kerenyi presents a historical account of the religion of Dionysos from its beginnings in the Minoan culture down to its transition to a cosmic and cosmopolitan religion of late antiquity under the Roman Empire. From the wealth of Greek literary, epigraphic, and monumental traditions, Kerenyi constructs a picture of Dionysian worship, always underlining the constitutive element of myth.Included in this study are the secret cult scenes of the women's mysteries both within and beyond Attica, the mystic sacrificial rite at Delphi, and the great public Dionysian festivals at Athens. The way in which the Athenian people received and assimilated tragedy in its immanent connection with Dionysos is seen as the greatest miracle in all cultural history. Tragedy and New Comedy are seen as high spiritual forms of the Dionysian religion, and the Dionysian element itself is seen as a chapter in the religious history of Europe.

Srimad-Bhagavatam, Sixth Canto

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda - 1976
The timeless wisdom of India is expressed in the Vedas, ancient Sanskrit texts that touches upon all fields of human knowledge. Originally preserved through oral tradition, the Vedas were first put into writing by Srila Vyasadeva, the "literary incarnation of God." After compiling the Vedas, Srila Vyasadeva was inspired by his spiritual master to present their profound essence in the form of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Known as "the ripened fruit of the tree of Vedic literature," Srimad-Bhagavatam is the most complete and authoritative exposition of Vedic knowledge. After writing the Bhagavatam, Vyasa taught it to his son, Shukadeva Goswami, who later spoke the Bhagavatam to Maharaja Parikshit in an assembly of sages on the bank of the sacred Ganges River. Although Maharaja Parikshit was a great rajarshi (saintly king) and the emperor of the world, when he received notice of his death seven days in advance, he renounced his entire kingdom and retired to the bank of the Ganges to seek spiritual enlightenment. The questions of King Parikshit and Shukadeva Goswami's illuminating answers, concerning everything from the nature of the self to the origin of the universe, are the basis of Srimad-Bhagavatam.This edition of Bhagavatam is the only complete English translation with an elaborate and scholarly commentary, and it is the first edition widely available to the English-reading public. This work is the product of the scholarly and devotional effort of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the world's most distinguished teacher of Indian religious and philosophical thought. His Sanskrit scholarship and intimate familiarity with Vedic culture combine to reveal to the West a magnificent exposition of this important classic.

Counsels on diet and foods: A compilation from the writings of Ellen G. White (Christian home library)

Ellen G. White - 1976
White in 1864 began to speak and write on proper nutrition and a way of living that took into account nature's laws, average life expectancy in the United States was 32 years; meals, served three, four, or five times a day, were highly spiced, heavy with meats, rich gravies, fried foods, and a vast array of pastries loaded with sugar and fat. Milk was often supplied by cows poorly cared for and sometimes tuberculous. Testing was unknown, and pasteurization was decades away. Except for salting and drying, the science of food preservation was still in the future. It was in this climate that Ellen White, with a pen dipped in the wisdom and knowledge of the Designer of the human form and the Author of nature's laws, called for a dietary program that was simple, healthful, nutritious, and appetizing. To this end she spoke for fifty years, writing her views in articles, books, and personal correspondence. Nutritionists today are aware of people's resistance to changes in their diet. Yet Ellen White succeeded in changing the dietary practices of hundreds of thousands who today profitably follow these counsels, now well supported by scientific research. Counsels on Diet and Foods presents this rich knowledge in topical order for convenient study.

Cranmer's Godly Order: Destruction of Catholicism Through Liturgical Change

Michael Treharne Davies - 1976
Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer (1549) began a process that changed the Catholic Church in England to the Anglican sect. Davies compares these changes to the modern liturgical "reforms" and the similarities are shocking.Cranmer's Godly Order is a classic...revised and expanded by Mr. Davies during his final years. Drawing upon the best of Catholic and Protestant scholarship and on primary sources, Davies traces the steps by which the ancient Catholic Mass became the Lord's Supper in the Church of England. And these steps were changes - as Popes and Reformers alike were at pains to stress.Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry VIII and Edward VI and architect of the new liturgy, was a master of the theology of the Mass, and hated it. The parallels between the Anglican liturgy and the New Mass of the 1960s will be uncomfortably obvious!

Deposition of a Disciple

Neal A. Maxwell - 1976
Maxwell, a professed disciple of the Savior and member of the First Council of the Seventy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, responds with direct, succinct answers, or "depositions." The device he uses, that of giving a deposition, suggests a legal setting. However, he explains, it is used here as a way of preserving testimony, a device for discovering and eliciting evidence. Two questioners are represented: the Questing (or true) Believer and the Near Believer, who probes because he wants to believe but also does not want to be "taken in." Elder Maxwell deals with such current concerns as the reality of Satan, the place of the thinker in the Church today, the civic responsibilities of a disciple, moral issues, universal brotherhood, commitment to gospel principles, the role of women, and family life in the Church. For members and investigators of the Church, particularly youth and young adults, Deposition of a Disciple gives concise reasons and insights into the views and beliefs of a true disciple.

The Treasures of Darkness: A History of Mesopotamian Religion

Thorkild Jacobsen - 1976
It will undoubtedly remain for a long time a classic in its field.”—Religious Studies Review“The Treasures of Darkness is the culmination of a lifetime’s work, an attempt to summarize and recreate the spiritual life of Ancient Mesopotamia. Jacobsen has succeeded brilliantly. . . . His vast experience shows through every page of this unique book, through the vivid, new translations resulting from years of careful research. Everyone interested in early Mesopotamia, whether specialist, student, or complete layman, should read this book. . . . It is, quite simply, authoritative, based on a vast experience of the ancient Mesopotamian mind, and very well written in the bargain.”—Brian M. Fagan, History“Professor Jacobsen is an authority on Sumerian life and society, but he is above all a philologist of rare sensibility. The Treasures of Darkness is almost entirely devoted to textual evidence, the more gritty sources of archaeological knowledge being seldom mentioned. He introduces many new translations which are much finer than previous versions. . . . Simply to read this poetry and the author’s sympathetic commentary is a pleasure and a revelation. Professor Jacobsen accepts the premise that all religion springs from man’s experience of a power not of this world, a mysterious ‘Wholly Other.’ This numinous power cannot be described in terms of worldly experience but only in allusive ‘metaphors’ that serve as a means of communication in religious teaching and thought. . . . As a literary work combining sensibility, imagination and scholarship, this book is near perfection.”—Jacquetta Hawkes, The London Sunday Times“A fascinating book. The general reader cannot fail to admire the translated passages of Sumerian poetry with which it abounds, especially those illustrating the Dumuzi-Inanna cycle of courtship, wedding and lament for the god’s untimely death. Many of these (though not all) are new even to the specialist and will repay close study.”—B.O.R. Gurney, Times Literary Supplement

Hugh Nibley - 1976
The issues that Nibley explores with penetrating insight—traditional Christianity's studied silence regarding evidence for the apostasy, Christ's 40-day postmortal ministry, and the centrality of the temple—are as relevant today as they ever were. In "The Passing of the Primitive Church," Nibley presents forty striking and often neglected facets of church history. For example, the apostles did not leave behind written instructions on how the fledgling church should be guided in their absence. "It is hard to conceive of such a colossal oversight if the founders had actually envisaged a long future for the church," Nibley writes. "The Forty-Day Mission of Christ" deals with the historical relevance of Acts 1:3, which claims that after Christ's resurrection, he was "seen of them forty days, and [spoke] of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God." Nibley argues that the teaching of the 40 days has not come down to us because, being "the last and highest revelation" given to the apostles, it was top secret. Nibley discusses the implications of the loss of the temple during the fall of Jerusalem in his "Christian Envy of the Temple." He explains why the loss of the temple was a crippling blow to the church and why the church fathers were reluctant to talk about it and why Christian scholars ignore or denounce it out of envy and insecurity. He writes, "the temple has cast a shadow over the claims and the confidence of the Christian church from early times, a shadow which is by no means diminishing in our own day."

The Only Hope

Felix A. Lorenz - 1976
White and other historical documents. He shows how the church has risen or faltered spiritually according to whether it has accepted or ignored the Laodicean teaching and the concept of righteousness by faith. But even more, he brings the reader to the realization that each one of us must apply the implications of these teachings to his own personal life if the church is to accomplish its divine goal. Pastor H.M.S. Richards calls it "the most hopeful and stirring appeal for the reception and proclamation of the Lord's message to Laodicea that I have ever read or heard." Lorenz writes from many decades of research and teaching on this subject. He has served as a conference official and as a college and academy teacher.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Seventh Canto - Part Two (Chapters 6-10)

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda - 1976
The timeless wisdom of India is expressed in the Vedas, ancient Sanskrit texts that touches upon all fields of human knowledge. Originally preserved through oral tradition, the Vedas were first put into writing by Śrīla Vyāsadeva, the literary incarnation of God. After compiling the Vedas, Śrīla Vyāsadeva was inspired by his spiritual master to present their profound essence in the form of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Known as the ripened fruit of the tree of Vedic literature, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the most complete and authoritative exposition of Vedic knowledge. After writing the Bhāgavatam, Vyāsa taught it to his son, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, who later spoke the Bhāgavatam to Mahārāja Parīkṣit in an assembly of sages on the bank of the sacred Ganges River. Although Mahārāja Parīkṣit was a great rājarṣhi (saintly king) and the emperor of the world, when he received notice of his death seven days in advance, he renounced his entire kingdom and retired to the bank of the Ganges to seek spiritual enlightenment. The questions of King Parīksit and Śukadeva Gosvāmīs illuminating answers, concerning everything from the nature of the self to the origin of the universe, are the basis of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. The first verse of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam makes clear that because the book is intended for people serious about spiritual progress, it will not deal with sectarian religious ideas, philosophical conjecture, or worldly concerns. The second text promises that anyone who reads the book systematically will achieve the spiritual success meant for all human beings. This edition of Bhāgavatam is the only complete English translation with an elaborate and scholarly commentary, and it is the first edition widely available to the English-reading public. This work is the product of the scholarly and devotional effort of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, the worlds most distinguished teacher of Indian religious and philosophical thought. His Sanskrit scholarship and intimate familiarity with Vedic culture combine to reveal to the West a magnificent exposition of this important classic. With its comprehensive system of providing the original Sanskrit text, Roman transliteration, precise word-for-word equivalents, a lucid English translation and a comprehensive commentary, it will appeal to scholars, students and laymen alike. The entire multivolume text, presented by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, promises to occupy a significant place in the intellectual, cultural and spiritual life of modern man for a long time to come. Contains 213 verses with the original sanskrit text, its roman transliteration, synonyms, translation and elaborate purports. Librarian's note: an alternate cover editionISBN: 0-912776-87-0
