Reliving the Passion: Meditations on the Suffering, Death, and the Resurrection of Jesus as Recorded in Mark.

Walter Wangerin Jr. - 1992
But somehow the oft-repeated tale of Christ’s passion can become too familiar, too formalized, for us to experience its incredible immediacy. The meditations in Reliving the Passion, which received a Gold Medallion Award in 1993, follow the story as given in the gospel of Mark—from the moment when the chief priests plot to kill Jesus to the Resurrection. But these readings are more than a recounting of events; they are an imaginary reenactment, leading the reader to re-experience the Passion or perhaps see it fully for the very first time. As only a great storyteller can, Walter Wangerin enables the reader to see the story from the inside, to discover the strangeness and wonder of the events as they unfold. It’s like being there. In vivid images and richly personal detail, Wangerin helps us recognize our own faces on the streets of Jerusalem; breathe the dark and heavy air of Golgotha; and experience, as Mary and Peter did, the bewilderment, the challenge, and the ultimate revelation of knowing the man called Jesus. “The story gets personal for every reader,” writes Wangerin, “for this is indeed our story, the story whereby we personally have been saved from such a death as Jesus died. “No, there is not another tale in the world more meaningful than this—here is where we all take our stands against sin and death and Satan, upon this historical, historic event. I consider it a holy privilege to participate in it retelling. “Read this book slowly. Read it with a seeing faith. Walk the way with Jesus. We, his followers of later centuries, do follow even now. Read, walk, come, sigh, live. Live! Rise again!”

Romans in a Week

N.T. Wright - 1992
Most Christians have a nodding acquaintance with bits of it; few would claim to have mastered its complex arguments, its sudden changes of mood, or even the question of why Paul wrote it in the first place. This course begins with a bird's eye view of the letter, seeing it holistically before moving to the parts. Then Professor Wright focuses on the individual sections, assessing their contribution to that whole. He examines some of the most controversial and difficult passages in detail (3:21-4:25, 7:7-8:11 and 9-11) before standing back and capturing a last awesome view of the breathtaking theological and missionary vision which Paul offers to his readers.

As the only monastic republic in the world, Mount Athos has been inhabited by monks alone for more than a thousand years, setting the tone of Orthodox Christian spirituality worldwide and producing a continuous stream of saints. CONTEMPORARY ASCETICS OF MOUNT ATHOS describes the lives and the spiritual images of five Athonite elders of recent centuries, who, although differing greatly from each other in their backgrounds, characters and ways of life, all bear the evident seal of the presence of the Holy Spirit in their hearts, testifying to a troubled world that the purpose of man's existence is union with God. CONTEMPORARY ASCETICS OF MOUNT ATHOS, now available in English, holds great importance in its ability to evoke awareness and insight among lovers of God today. The most exalted teachings on asceticism and the vision of God are seen practically applied in the persons of these new luminaries, stars in our midst--gentle and heedful of others.

Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament

Christopher J.H. Wright - 1992
Today the debate over who Jesus is rages on. Has the Bible bound Christians to a narrow and mistaken notion of Jesus? Should we listen to other gospels, other sayings of Jesus, that enlarge and correct a mistaken story? Is the real Jesus entangled in a web of the church's Scripture, awaiting liberation from our childhood faith so he might speak to our contemporary pluralistic world? To answer these questions we need to know what story Jesus claimed for himself. Christopher Wright is convinced that Jesus' own story is rooted in the story of Israel. In this book he traces the life of Christ as it is illuminated by the Old Testament. And he describes God's design for Israel as it is fulfilled in the story of Jesus.
