Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Not-Evangelism

Carl Medearis - 2011
Some of us seek them out. But we are seldom ready the way Jesus seemed to be ready. So how do we draw others to God in the midst of these ordinary conversations the way Jesus did? In Speaking of Jesus, Carl Medearis draws on his experience of international reconciliation between Muslims and Christians to remind us of the heart of the matter: Jesus. Here he gives us tools, stories, and the foundation we need to move beyond “us” and “them” and simply talk about the One who changes it all. As Carl writes, “While others are explaining and defending various isms and ologies we’re simply pointing people to our friend. The one who uncovers and disarms. Who leads people right to himself. The beginning and the end of the story. A good story indeed.”

One-to-One Bible Reading: A Simple Guide for Every Christian

David R. Helm - 2011
That guided people in a deeper, more meaningful way than an event, program or class could possibly do—guided on an individual basis by someone who cared for them personally. What is this way? What is this activity that is so simple and so universal that it meets the discipleship needs of very different people at very different stages of discipleship, even non-Christians?We call it reading the Bible one-to-one.But what exactly is reading the Bible one-to-one? Why should we do it? Who is it for?In One-to-One Bible Reading: a simple guide for every Christian, David Helm answers these important questions.About the AuthorDavid Helm is a pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Chicago, and Chairman of The Charles Simeon Trust, a ministry devoted to equipping expository preachers. Everyday Church: Gospel Communities on Mission

Tim Chester - 2011
We recognize the need to adapt, but are unsure of the way forward. This book offers practical ideas for engaging with secularized society and does so in a way that is enfranchising, helping churches rely on their members instead of one leader with a dynamic personality or specialist skills. Chester and Timmis contend that the solution is an "everyday church" doing everyday mission with no signage except our lives. They organize the book around a missional reading of 1 Peter, since Peter's first-century readers faced a similar situation as aliens and strangers. Gifted communicators and experienced pastors, these authors have proven their ability to be winsome and enlightening, especially in view of their success with Total Church and You Can Change.

In "Misfits Welcome," he shares the simple, life-changing lesson he has learned from twenty years of ministering to the forgotten: Being a misfit prepares you to do the work of the Lord.Have you found yourself in a jarring new era of life? Have your circumstances deviated drastically from your plans? Maybe you've felt like a misfit all your life, or maybe you're still haunted by yesterday's mistakes. Whatever the case, rejoice! It is at your most broken that you are most ready for what God has in store. Am I Really a Christian?

Mike McKinley - 2011
After all, Jesus himself said that some people will do seemingly "Christian" things in his name but will not truly know him. Or maybe you know you are not a Christian and you wonder what it really means to be one.To be sure, however, there is clarity from God's perspective. He is not confused about who does and does not know him. And though our self-awareness is certainly limited, we have been given biblical criteria to help us evaluate whether we are indeed followers of Christ.Mike McKinley shows us the importance of examining our standing with God and helps us to fearlessly ask the hard questions, ultimately allowing us to see whether we are in the faith and what exactly that entails.

The Brokenhearted Evangelist

Jeremy Walker - 2011
In an engaging style and with pastoral warmth, Walker urges Christians to exercise their obligation and privilege to teach transgressors God’s ways, providing both spiritual truth and practical guidance for carrying out this necessary gospel duty.Table of Contents:Preface Am I Willing? Our Undeniable Obligation Am I Effective? Our Necessary Equipment Am I Committed? Our Appointed Means Am I Focused? Our Declared Aim Am I Fruitful? Our Great ExpectationAuthor Jeremy Walker is a pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England, and co-author of A Portrait of Paul: Identifying a True Minister of Christ.Endorsements “In recent years providence has brought a number of people into my life and ministry who are passionate about evangelism. Some of them are especially keen to win friends, fellow-workers, and family to Christ; others are engaged in various kinds of open-air evangelism, bringing the gospel to people they have never met before. I thank God for all of them and the passion that drives them. This excellent book by Jeremy Walker explains the biblical principles that underlie and provoke such passion, reminding us that time is short, the need is urgent, the laborers are few, and the fields are white unto harvest.” — John MacArthur“Jeremy Walker’s book is in the tradition of the Puritan classic, Joseph Alleine’s Alarm to the Unconverted, but this is more Jeremy Walker’s Alarm to the Converted. It is a pleasant surprise, coming as it does from a part of our world where Christianity has largely entered a ‘garrison’ (bunker) mode. The book, based on Psalm 51:13, is not meant simply to teach us about evangelism; it demands a verdict. He enlists the help of the great soul winners in history to reinforce his appeals. Even before I finished reading the book, I was already asking myself whether my heart was truly broken about the lost around me—and if it is, what am I doing about it?” — Conrad Mbewe, Pastor, Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia“The Broken Hearted Evangelist will refresh, strengthen, and equip the most timid saint for the work of soul winning. Jeremy Walker’s consideration of evangelism from the perspective of Psalm 51 is like fresh water drawn from a new well. He does not merely exhort us to greater faithfulness in evangelism and then leave us bewildered and guilty. Instead, he takes us to the very fountain from which all true motivation and strength for evangelism springs forth—the gospel and its glorious impact upon our own lives.” — Paul Washer“The Brokenhearted Evangelist is a challenging call to our great responsibility and glorious privilege of personally sharing the gospel of Christ with others. In this book, Pastor Jeremy Walker does a superb job of showing us from the life of David that mercies received from God are to be a key motivating factor for us telling others about Him.

Love Is an Orientation Participant's Guide: Practical Ways to Build Bridges with the Gay Community

Andrew Marin - 2011
Yet Christ demonstrated a different path of religious and cultural engagement to establish his kingdom here on earth. In light of such countercultural principles, the Christian community needs a new view on the issues that divide conservative believers and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.Andrew Marin uses practical applications he’s learned over the last decade of living and working in the LGBT neighborhood of Chicago (Boystown), as well as his international speaking and consulting ministry, to offer a variety of practical teaching, insights, and life-lessons on reaching the LGBT community.Rather than avoiding the topic of homosexuality, Love Is an Orientation aims to equip the Christian community to bridge the gap between LGBT and religious communities. How do I know I know God?

Margaret Weston - 2011
In the first part of the discussion the subject is whether it is actually possible to have a relationship with God - "God with us? So you are saying that because God wanted to have a relationship with us he came down to earth to be with us?" The second section then goes into specific detail about the author's personal relationship with God - "Relationships are not always easy and when God challenges me it is not comfortable but it is necessary."Each chapter starts with part of the conversation and then proceeds to explain the subject under discussion in more detail. A wide range of subjects are covered in the first part in order to show that God has done everything necessary so that we can have a personal relationship with him. The questions which arise in the continuing discussion are all based on the author's personal experience - the book includes many questions she has asked herself and questions she has been asked by others. The message is clear that it is possible for you to know God because he has done everything necessary for this and shown beyond any doubt how much he loves you.The book is based firmly on the Bible and the author writes in such a way as to provoke interest and to simplify what some might see as a complicated matter - that of knowing God. If it is possible for me, then it is possible for you, is the message of her book. The book would be invaluable for you if you claim to be a Christian but are not sure whether you do have a personal relationship with God. It would also be helpful for those who have no faith and yet are intrigued by those who do. Those who belong to other religions may also find it interesting.Churches could find it useful in outreach work and Christians who know God may find it useful in discussions with their non-Christian friends, many of whom may well have asked them this very question - 'How do you know you know God?'
