The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life

John le Carré - 2016
First comes the imagining, then the search for reality. Then back to the imagining, and to the desk where I'm sitting now." From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, le Carré has always written from the heart of modern times. In this, his first memoir, le Carré is as funny as he is incisive, reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels. Whether he's writing about the parrot at a Beirut hotel that could perfectly mimic machine gun fire or the opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth, visiting Rwanda's museums of the unburied dead in the aftermath of the genocide, celebrating New Year's Eve 1982 with Yasser Arafat and his high command, interviewing a German woman terrorist in her desert prison in the Negev, listening to the wisdoms of the great physicist, dissident, and Nobel Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, meeting with two former heads of the KGB, watching Alec Guinness prepare for his role as George Smiley in the legendary BBC TV adaptations, or describing the female aid worker who inspired the main character in The Constant Gardener, le Carré endows each happening with vividness and humor, now making us laugh out loud, now inviting us to think anew about events and people we believed we understood.Best of all, le Carré gives us a glimpse of a writer's journey over more than six decades, and his own hunt for the human spark that has given so much life and heart to his fictional characters.

Charles Cranston Jett - 2016
He has succeeded in telling the unclassified story of the journey taken by an extraordinary group of men who built the first operational “Super Nuke” and effectively shared what they developed with others in the entire US nuclear submarine force. He created the SSN Pre Deployment training program, consolidated developments made on the Ray to create the highly useful Geographic Plot (Geo Plot) and wrote the tactical doctrine for the SSN based electronic intelligence collection system, AN/WLR-6. Well done, Charlie. I am proud to have had you as a shipmate.” Albert L. Kelln Rear Admiral, United States Navy (Ret.) Former Commanding Officer and Plank Owner USS RAY (SSN 653) - The original “Super Nuke” “Charlie Jett succeeds in providing an unclassified account of what it was like to be a nuclear qualified submariner who had the unique experience of building and serving aboard the first operational “Super Nuke” - the most modern fast attack nuclear submarine designed specifically to face the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. He describes the contributions of the commissioning crew in developing sonar techniques and operational tactics and how these lessons were ultimately and effectively communicated to later “Super Nukes.” Charlie provided the initial idea and was instrumental in establishing and implementing a new concept of training which significantly improved the operational readiness of the nuclear attack submarine force. He created the “Geographic Plot” to improve operational safety and wrote the tactical doctrine for a new and sophisticated nuclear attack submarine electronic intelligence gathering system. “Super Nuke” is a good read for those who have an interest in life as a submarine officer and how these marvelous machines and their crews contributed to winning the Cold War.” The Honorable John H. Dalton Former Nuclear Submarine Officer and 70th Secretary of the Navy “This is a most interesting work on the U.S. Navy’s program to combat the Soviet submarine threat during the long Cold War. Charlie was in at the beginning and accurately describes the significant efforts, both in individual sacrifice and technical development that led to U.S. undersea superiority. As a junior officer his individual accomplishments were most significant. The submarine efforts were probably the most important U.S. competitive strategy that drove the Soviets to the poor house and led to the demise of the Soviet Union.” Bruce DeMars Admiral, United States Navy (Ret.) Former Commanding Officer, USS CAVALLA (SSN 684) - a subsequent “Super Nuke” Former Director of Naval Reactors

Trojan

David L. Wallace - 2016
Before the Hack of the US Election, there was Trojan. Trojan is based on an infiltration and takedown of the US Nuclear Armament and Defense Systems scenario, which a US Navy Information Technology Veteran envisioned while he attended the Navy and Marine Corps Computer Science School at Quantico, VA.While attending a computer internals class, an instructor removed the covers off a few of the systems in a computer lab and the student noticed that the tiny CPU chips, the brains of these machines, were all manufactured overseas somewhere. It shocked him and made him nervous that America’s nuclear defense capabilities could be dependent on foreign parts. It begged the question…What if an entity embedded rouge computer logic on those chips at the time they were manufactured, causing them to crash at a predetermined time, incapacitating America’s defense capabilities? That question spawned the idea for this story.Within Trojan, suddenly and without warning, all of America’s nuclear armament and defense systems crash - a complete meltdown. Star Wars, Air Force One, Doomsday Briefcase, and Guidance Systems, all rendered useless. Exposed, America is brutally attacked, major cities bombed.Amid this crisis, one man arises, Victor Walker. He holds the key to saving America, but there appears to be one small problem – there are those in the American Government who don’t want him to do it.Trojan is not a story written second-hand by someone who researched information technology and then penned the story. It’s written by a real-world Information Technology Veteran who provided services to the US Navy, the Department of the Navy, and various Fortune 100 companies. Now that the Hack of the US Election is no longer a debatable topic, Trojan is not only a possibility, it’s a plausible future reality. “Victor, who is comparable to an extremely patriotic Jason Bourne, is an intriguing hero.” - Clarion Review“Fans of the genre will be delighted with the book's well-crafted characters, excellent pacing, and plot.” - Publisher’s Weekly

China’s Cyber Power (Adelphi Book 456)

Nigel Inkster - 2016
The country has the world’s largest internet-user community, a growing economic footprint and increasingly capable military and intelligence services. Harnessing these assets, it is pursuing a patient, assertive foreign policy that seeks to determine how information and communications technologies are governed and deployed. This policy is likely to have significant normative impact, with potentially adverse implications for a global order that has been shaped by Western liberal democracies. And, even as China goes out into the world, there are signs that new technologies are becoming powerful tools for domestic social control and the suppression of dissent abroad.Western policymakers are struggling to meet this challenge. While there is much potential for good in a self-confident China that is willing to invest in the global commons, there is no guarantee that the country’s growth and modernisation will lead inexorably to democratic political reform. This Adelphi book examines the political, historical and cultural development of China’s cyber power, in light of its evolving internet, intelligence structures, military capabilities and approach to global governance. As China attempts to gain the economic benefits that come with global connectivity while excluding information seen as a threat to stability, the West will be forced to adjust to a world in which its technological edge is fast eroding and can no longer be taken for granted.

TIER Unit 3-1, Day One: Attacked

Lincoln James - 2016
However, recently returned from a suspension that casts doubt on his ability to lead, Jack Miller rallies his Terror Incident Emergency Response Unit – TIER Unit 3-1 – and takes over from an overstretched LAPD. But as Jack’s elite squad battles to hunt the people responsible, a man of great intelligence - driven by a hatred not even he can control - prepares his soldiers for war. TIER Unit 3-1 sees Jack Miller attempt to first win over his team and his superiors, then bring in a terrorist mastermind whose endgame cannot yet be seen. Day One: Attacked is the first of five novellas pursuing this story over the course of a thrilling action-adventure series. AUTHOR Q&A Q: What’s the conceit here? Why five books? A: The idea is to structure the adventure like a TV series. Five books laid out in which each “episode” sees a different objective within a bigger whole. Inspired by shows like Quantico, 24, Homeland. The series is currently in Kindle Unlimited, so if you’re subscribed you can get them all. Q: So it’s not like a series of cliffhangers? A: Not like a guy with a gun to his head or falling out of a helicopter, then “duh-duh-duuuuh!” Fade to black. No. The days are complete, but the ultimate goal in the story – to catch the terrorist mastermind – is not resolved until the fifth and final book. For example, the first book is an action adventure starting with the initial attacks, the second deals with the aftermath and the revenge attacks getting more personal, then the third is more of an assassination thriller, as they act on information acquired in the second, and so on. Q: And they’re all shorter than most novels? A: Each day is about half the length of a regular novel, although many authors are writing shorter works these days. When a story doesn’t need to be 100,000 words, why not write it in 30-40,000? You see this with James Patterson and his “Bookshots” range, which are shorter, incredibly fast-paced novellas. Same with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher shorts. That’s the kind of pace and tone I’m aiming for with the TIER Unit books. Q: The story features a series of attacks by Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. Are you worried at all by notions of “political correctness?” A: I think “political correctness” has lost its meaning over the years. The term has been hijacked and twisted into something that suggests “being nice” to each other or “showing respect” is somehow a bad thing. In real life, Islamic terrorism is a clear and present threat to the whole world, so I don’t believe it is “politically incorrect” to write a conspiracy story about that. By that same token, the TIER Unit books portray a number of Muslims as decent folk, which I do not believe is “political correctness.” There ARE Islamic terrorists in the world and there ARE Muslim-Americans fighting to keep the country safe.

Turnabout and Deception: Crafting the Double-Cross and the Theory of Outs

Barton Whaley - 2016
Each examination delves into extensive case studies to establish not only foundational understandings of essential espionage principals, but also creates guidance for their practical application on both individual and governmental scales.Deception is a basic tactic used by allies and enemies alike, but when both protagonist and antagonist ply the same trade, it is the master of the double-cross who comes out the victor. Turnabout and Deception examines how to turn the tables on an opponent and use their own deception against them. Through thirty-eight case studies, this monograph dissects the double-cross to reveal the psychological battle of wits at its core. No matter how well crafted, however, there is always a chance that a deception will fail. But failure is not the end of a deception, and even failed deception operations can yield results. Turnabout and Deception pores over sixty more case studies to determine why a deception will fail, steps to prevent a failed operation, and how to turn that failure into a success.

Executing the Rosenbergs: Death and Diplomacy in a Cold War World

Lori Clune - 2016
Edgar Hoover labeled the "crime of the century." After three years of appeals they were executed, making them the only American civilians put to death for conspiracy to commit espionage and turning their two sons into orphans. The Harry Truman administration charged the couple based on the assumptions that the Rosenbergs need to be held accountable for giving atomic bomb technology to the Soviets. The Rosenberg case tested the limits of the federal government's new Cold War propaganda apparatus. Both the Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower administrations struggled to sell the guilt of the two spies and use the case to sell democracy and freedom overseas. However, citizens around the world did not always agree with the United States' execution of the Rosenbergs, which diminished the standing of the country in the eyes of the world, particularly so soon after the death of Stalin and the removal of the face of evil global Communism. In this first book, Lori Clune uses newly discovered State Department documents to demonstrate dissent to the Rosenberg decision from 80 cities in 48 countries in the early 1950s. American diplomats overseas observed and reported protests, petitions, letters of support, and newspaper editorials back to the State Department, along with policy recommendations. This project tells a new narrative of the Rosenbergs by transcending questions of guilt and innocence, adding a transnational component to the story and weaving the case into the Korean War, the death of Stalin, and the Cold War more broadly. While the Rosenbergs have been the subject of endless debate and discussion for half a century, this book offers an original approach to the topic, one that will no doubt add fodder to the politically passionate and provide a significant case study for those interested in the US relationship with the world.

Cold War Counterfeit Spies: Tales of Espionage - Genuine or Bogus?

Nigel West - 2016
What Nigel West has discovered is that the most egregious deceptions were in fact the stories themselves. In this remarkable investigation into the claims of many who portrayed themselves as key players in clandestine operations, the author has exposed a catalogue of misrepresentations and falsehoods.Did Greville Wynne really exfiltrate a GRU defector from Odessa? Was the frogman Buster Crabb abducted during a mission in Portsmouth Harbor? Did the KGB run a close-guarded training facility, as described by J. Bernard Hutton in School for Spies, which was modeled on a typical town in the American midwest, so agents could be acclimatized to a non-Soviet environment? With the help of witnesses with firsthand experience, and recently declassified documents, Nigel West answers these and other fascinating questions from a time when secrecy and suspicion allowed the truth to be concealed.

For King and Country

Robert Perret - 2016
As a young Army surgeon in Afghanistan I had seen the unfortunate results of still-living men only partially obliterated by artillery. I had seen the queer bloodless waxen figures left behind after a beheading. I had seen the rainbow hues of women and children stoned to death rather than being left behind to be liberated by His Majesty’s fighting men. So many deaths, brutal, savage, but in their own way honest. A rock hurled, a blade swung, even a shell fired. A man had looked at another man and chose to end his life with violence. Nature at its most pure and most ugly. But this dining room tableau was inhuman, unnatural. Twenty mid-ranking members of Ally brass representing Britain, France, Australia, and Canada, blue and contorted, dried trails of every variety of effluvia that seemed to have been squeezed from their bodies by the giant invisible hand of some capricious pagan deity. I said a brief prayer into the scented handkerchief at my nose." It has been many years since Sherlock Holmes retired and Mycroft Holmes died, leaving Watson alone as the crumbling Empire's last able man. When a number of mid-level Ally brass are murdered, miles from the front, Watson is summoned to investigate. He finds a new, deadly gas is being developed. A gas that could devour western Europe, and hand total victory to the Kaiser. England needs a good, trustworthy man--trained by the Master Detective himself--to end find the gas' source and stop its development. Thus Mycroft's successor sends him on a one-man mission across Europe, deep behind enemy lines, with the fate of Europe itself on his shoulders... But does Watson have a history with the German scientist who developed the gas?

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate: Covert Action and Internal Operations

Owen L. Sirrs - 2016
While ISI is regarded as one of the most powerful government agencies in Pakistan today, surprisingly little has been written about it from an academic perspective. This book addresses critical gaps in our understanding of this agency, including its domestic security mission, covert backing of the Afghan Taliban, and its links to al-Qa'ida. Using primary source materials, including declassified intelligence and diplomatic reporting, press reports and memoirs, this book explores how ISI was transformed from a small, negligible counter intelligence outfit of the late-1940s into the national security behemoth of today with extensive responsibilities in domestic security, political interference and covert action. This study concludes that reforming or even eliminating ISI will be fundamental if Pakistan is to successfully transition from an army-run, national security state to a stable, democratic society that enjoys peaceful relations with its neighbours. This book will be of interest to students of intelligence studies, South Asian politics, foreign policy and international security in general.
