Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon
Colin Bryar - 2021
In Working Backwards, these two long-serving Amazon executives reveal and codify the principles and practices that drive the success of one of the most extraordinary companies the world has ever known. With twenty-seven years of Amazon experience between them, much of it in the early aughts—a period of unmatched innovation that brought products and services including Kindle, Amazon Prime, Amazon Studios, and Amazon Web Services to life—Bryar and Carr offer unprecedented access to the Amazon way as it was refined, articulated, and proven to be repeatable, scalable, and adaptable. With keen analysis and practical steps for applying it at your own company—no matter the size—the authors illuminate how Amazon’s fourteen leadership principles inform decision-making at all levels and reveal how the company’s culture has been defined by four characteristics: customer obsession, long-term thinking, eagerness to invent, and operational excellence. Bryar and Carr explain the set of ground-level practices that ensure these are translated into action and flow through all aspects of the business.Working Backwards is a practical guidebook and a corporate narrative, filled with the authors’ in-the-room recollections of what “Being Amazonian” is like and how it has affected their personal and professional lives. They demonstrate that success on Amazon’s scale is not achieved by the genius of any single leader, but rather through commitment to and execution of a set of well-defined, rigorously-executed principles and practices—shared here for the very first time. Jeff Lawson - 2021

Second, they understand developers and know how to motivate them. And third, they invest in their developers' success. As a software developer and public company CEO, Lawson uses his unique position to bridge the language and tools executives use with the unique culture of high performing, creative software developers. Ask Your Developer is a toolkit to help business leaders, product managers, technical leaders, software developers, and executives achieve their common goal—building great digital products and experiences. How to compete in the digital economy? Unscripted - The Great Rat-Race Escape: From Wage Slavery to Wealth: How to Start a Purpose Driven Business and Win Financial Freedom for a Lifetime
M.J. DeMarco - 2021
The Cold Start Problem
Andrew Chen - 2021
Startups face daunting challenges entering the technology ecosystem, including stiff competition, copycats, and ineffective marketing channels. Teams launching new products must consider the advantages of “the network effect,” where a product or service’s value increases as more users engage with it. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants utilize network effects, and most tech products incorporate them, whether they’re messaging apps, workplace collaboration tools, or marketplaces. Network effects provide a path for fledgling products to break through, attracting new users through viral growth and word of mouth.Yet most entrepreneurs lack the vocabulary and context to describe them—much less understand the fundamental principles that drive the effect. What exactly are network effects? How do teams create and build them into their products? How do products compete in a market where every player has them? Andrew Chen draws on his experience and on interviews with the CEOs and founding teams of LinkedIn, Twitch, Zoom, Dropbox, Tinder, Uber, Airbnb, Pinterest — to provide unique insights in answering these questions. Chen also provides practical frameworks and principles that can be applied across products and industries. The Cold Start Problem reveals what makes winning networks successful, why some startups fail to successfully scale, and most crucially, why products that create and compete using the network effect are vitally important today.

Backable: The Surprising Truth Behind What Makes People Take a Chance on You
Suneel Gupta - 2021
No one makes it alone. But there’s a reason why some people can get investors or bosses to believe in them while others cannot. And that reason has little to do with experience, pedigree or a polished business plan. Backable people seem to have a hidden quality that inspires others to take action. We often chalk this up to natural talent or charisma…either you have “it” or you don’t. After getting rejected by every investor he pitched, Suneel Gupta had a burning question: could “it” be learned? Drawing lessons from hundreds of the world’s biggest thinkers, Suneel discovered how to pitch new ideas in a way that has raised millions of dollars, influenced large-scale change inside massive corporations, and even convinced his 8-year old daughter to clean her room. Inside are long-held secrets from producers of Oscar-winning films, members of Congress, military leaders, culinary stars, venture capitalists, founders of unicorn-status startups, and executives at iconic companies like Lego, Method, and Pixar. Backable reveals how the key to success is not charisma, connections, or even your resume, but rather your ability to persuade others to take a chance on you. This groundbreaking book will show you how.

Why Startups Fail: A New Roadmap for Entrepreneurial Success
Tom Eisenmann - 2021
In Why Startups Fail, Eisenmann reveals his findings: six distinct patterns that account for the vast majority of startup failures.- Bad Bedfellows. Startup success is thought to rest largely on the founder's talents and instincts. But the wrong team, investors, or partners can sink a venture just as quickly.- False Starts. In following the oft-cited advice to "fail fast" and to "launch before you're ready," founders risk wasting time and capital on the wrong solutions.- False Promises. Success with early adopters can be misleading and give founders unwarranted confidence to expand.- Speed Traps. Despite the pressure to "get big fast," hypergrowth can spell disaster for even the most promising ventures.- Help Wanted. Rapidly scaling startups need lots of capital and talent, but they can make mistakes that leave them suddenly in short supply of both.- Cascading Miracles. Silicon Valley exhorts entrepreneurs to dream big. But the bigger the vision, the more things that can go wrong.Drawing on fascinating stories of ventures that failed to fulfill their early promise--from a home-furnishings retailer to a concierge dog-walking service, from a dating app to the inventor of a sophisticated social robot, from a fashion brand to a startup deploying a vast network of charging stations for electric vehicles--Eisenmann offers frameworks for detecting when a venture is vulnerable to these patterns, along with a wealth of strategies and tactics for avoiding them.A must-read for founders at any stage of their entrepreneurial journey, Why Startups Fail is not merely a guide to preventing failure but also a roadmap charting the path to startup success.

This book by a CEO and public relations expert shows how authentic leadership eliminates the need for short-cuts that sabotage success.
Self-doubt and the intense pressure of facing the unknown are real problems for entrepreneurs and leaders. But there's a difference between feigning confidence and running a con game; Elizabeth Holmes and Billy McFarland thrived on faking it for a short while, but their businesses were all aspiration, no foundation, and so collapsed disastrously. This book revisits the core of leadership, defines authentic, reality-based business integrity, and shows readers how to attain and maintain it.Through the double lens of running her own PR firm in Silicon Valley and advising hundreds of other executives, award-winning CEO Sabrina Horn shows leaders how to attend to the fundamentals and gain the clarity of thought necessary to make sound business decisions. She delivers real, workable strategies and best practices with firsthand accounts of painful lessons. Horn's fake-free advice will empower leaders to disarm fear and organize risk, manage setbacks, plan for the unexpected, and create a company culture designed for long-term, sustainable growth.

Market Research Like a Pro
Pooja Agnihotri - 2021
One of the quotes from his book reads, “ If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” That translates to business as, “If you know yourself, your customers, and your competitors, you need not fear about your business anymore.” But how can entrepreneurs and business owners do that? The answer is market research.Market research is the magic elixir that can give you that extra edge you always wanted over your competitors. It can help entrepreneurs in launching successful startups within their limited resources; it can even help small business owners from getting their businesses taken over by giant corporations. My book, Market Research Like a Pro, is written for the sole purpose of helping businesses not just understand the role market research plays in the success of a business, but also in learning the easiest ways of incorporating it into their day-to-day business operations. In this book, entrepreneurs and small business owners are going to learn: How to create a market research plan? How to collect data through market research?Where should businesses look for data? And most importantly, how to put the collected data into action? After reading this book, Sun Tzu will have nothing on you.

Winning on Purpose: The Unbeatable Strategy of Loving Customers
Fred Reichheld - 2021
Since its introduction two decades ago by author and customer loyalty guru Fred Reichheld, companies across the spectrum have adopted it—from industrial giants such as Mercedes-Benz and Cummins to Silicon Valley sweethearts such as Apple and Google to digital innovators such as Warby Parker and Peloton. Why? Love. In Winning on Purpose, which grows directly out of NPS, Reichheld argues that the primary purpose of a business should be to enrich the lives of its customers—and the best way to do that is to embrace a rating system that segments customers into Promoters, Passives, and Detractors. NPS illuminates a radically simple idea: prosper by treating people the way you want to be treated. It puts the Golden Rule—and love—at the heart of enduring business success. Across a wide range of industries, the "star" NPS companies consistently deliver higher returns to shareholders. Want to double the stock market returns of an index fund? This book shows you how.But winning on purpose isn't easy. Reichheld explains why most NPS practitioners achieve just a small fraction of the system's full potential and presents the newest thinking and best practices for doing NPS right. He unveils the Earned Growth Rate (EGR): the first reliable measure of what he calls "good profits"—generated when customers come back for more and bring their friends—and argues convincingly that EGR should be included in audited financial statements.Delivering an engaging mix of in-depth business examples and moving personal stories, Reichheld distills and advances the essentials of NPS. Winning on Purpose is the must-read story of the management phenomenon of our time—and your indispensable guide to making NPS the key to your own company's success.
We the Possibility: Harnessing Public Entrepreneurship to Solve Our Most Urgent Problems
Mitchell Weiss - 2021
This provocative and inspiring book points the way.The huge challenges we face are daunting indeed: climate change, crumbling infrastructure, declining public education and social services. At the same time, we've come to accept the sad notion that government can't do new things or solve tough problems—it's too big, too slow, and mired in bureaucracy. Not so, says former public official, now Harvard Business School professor, Mitchell Weiss. The truth is, entrepreneurial spirit and savvy in government are growing, transforming the public sector's response to big problems at all levels. The key, Weiss argues, is a shift from a mindset of Probability Government—overly focused on safe solutions and mimicking so-called best practices—to Possibility Government. This means public leadership and management that's willing to boldly imagine new possibilities and to experiment.Weiss shares the three basic tenets of this new way of governing:Government that can imagine: Seeing problems as opportunities and involving citizens in designing solutionsGovernment that can try new things: Testing and experimentation as a regular part of solving public problemsGovernment that can scale: Harnessing platform techniques for innovation and growthThe lessons unfold in the timely episodes Weiss has seen and studied: the US Special Operations Command prototyping of a hoverboard for chasing pirates; a heroin hackathon in opioid-ravaged Cincinnati; a series of experiments in Singapore to rein in Covid-19; among many others. At a crucial moment in the evolution of government's role in our society, We the Possibility provides inspiration and a positive model, along with crucial guardrails, to help shape progress for generations to come.
Big Little Breakthroughs: How Small, Everyday Innovations Drive Oversized Results
Josh Linkner - 2021
We know that bold innovations are critical in these disruptive and competitive times, but when it comes to breakthrough thinking, we often freeze up. Instead of shooting for a $10-billion payday or a Nobel Prize, the most prolific innovators focus on Big Little Breakthroughs—small creative acts that unlock massive rewards over time. By cultivating daily micro-innovations, individuals and organizations are better equipped to tackle tough challenges and seize transformational opportunities. How did a convicted drug dealer launch and scale a massively successful fitness company? What core mindset drove LEGO to become the largest toy company in the world? How did a Pakistani couple challenge the global athletic shoe industry? What simple habits led Lady Gaga, Banksy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda to their remarkable success? Big Little Breakthroughs isn’t just for propeller-head inventors, fancy-pants CEOs, or hoodie-donning tech billionaires. Rather, it’s a surpassingly simple system to help everyday people become everyday innovators.

The New Builders: Face to Face With the True Future of Business
Seth Levine - 2021
It has been since the Great Recession of 2008 and, while it's too early to understand the full impact of the Covid-19 induced financial crisis, the negative trend in American entrepreneurship will almost certainly be accelerated by the pandemic. New firms are being started at a slower rate, are employing fewer workers and are being formed disproportionately in just a few major cities in the United States. At the same time, large chains are opening more and more locations and companies such as Amazon with their "deliver everything and anything" to your front door service are quietly displacing Main Street businesses. And that was before the Covid-19 crisis. In The New Builders, we argue for the future of American entrepreneurship. But it lies in some surprising places - and will in particular rely on the success of women, black and brown entrepreneurs. Our country hasn't yet even recognized the identities of the new American entrepreneurs, let alone developed strategies to support them. Meanwhile the pressure on them is being compounded by the current economic crisis in ways that we haven't even begun to wrap our heads around. Our misunderstanding is driven by a core misperception of entrepreneurship in the United States. Consider for a moment a "typical" American entrepreneur. Think about the entrepreneur who appears in the news or on TV, the business leader making headlines during the pandemic. Think of the type of businesses she or he is building, the college or business school they attended, the place they grew up.The image you probably conjured up is that of a young, white male starting a technology business. He's likely located in Silicon Valley. Possibly in New York or Boston. He's probably self-confident, versed in the ins and outs of business funding and has an extensive (Ivy League?) network of peers and mentors eager to help his business thrive, grow and make millions, if not billions. You might also feel America is teeming with these "typical" entrepreneurs, young, ambitious and ready to take on the risks of starting a business. You may feel, based on what you read in the press - particularly the business and tech press - that entrepreneurship is thriving in the United States, and helping the United States maintain its economic power. You'd be almost completely wrong. The dominant image of an entrepreneur as a young white man starting a tech business on the coasts isn't correct at all. Today's American entrepreneurs, the people who we'll need to help us dig out of the current economic recession and help rebuild our economy, are more likely to be female and non-white. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 31 times between 1972 and 2018 according to the Kauffman Foundation (in 1972, women-owned businesses accounted for just 4.6% of all firms; in 2018 that figure was 40%). Meanwhile, the fastest-growing group female entrepreneurs are women of color, who are responsible for 64% of the new women-owned businesses being created. In a few years, women will make up more than half of the entrepreneurs in America. The age of the average American entrepreneur also belies conventional wisdom: It's 42. The average age of the most successful entrepreneurs -- those in the top .01% in terms of their company's growth in the first five years -- is 45.These are the New Builders. Women, people of color, immigrants and people over 40.But we're failing them. And by doing so are failing ourselves. If we don't reverse this trend, America will lose the economic edge that has set us apart from other economies in the world. The New Builders will show how entrepreneurship has been intertwined with the history and economy of the United States -- and how its decline is part of the story of the divisiveness of our times, and the loss of hope in our country. The COVID crisis is making clear how vulnerable entrepreneursare. Relief money authorized by Congress is failing to reach New Builders and is highlighting structural issues with the way we support entrepreneurship. For example, women and minority owned businesses are not accessing the key aid packages. The rules require businesses to have relationships with certain approved SBA lenders, which women and minority owned businesses are less likely to have. Big banks favored larger customers at the expense of smaller and more Main Street businesses. And the program itself - based on W2 payroll -- failed to address the kinds of businesses most likely to be started by New Builders and the ways in which those businesses are organized (women and minority owned businesses make greater use of contract employees, for example, who were excluded from the loan calculations). The COVID crisis laid bare how we're falling short in supporting this most critical segment of our economy and the foundation of our economic future. The New Builders is a vital book now because in ways that have not been recognized, even by the experts, the entrepreneurs of America are in trouble. And we need them - they are the bedrock of the economy, the soul of our country and account for nearly all of the job growth in America. And now, more than ever, their resolve - and ours - will be tested. As our country reacts to the Covid-19 crisis, our economy goes into free fall, and our elected officials struggle to figure out what to do in response, the time to tell the real stories of American entrepreneurship has never been more important. The New Builders will be a vehicle for sharing these stories and for talking in depth about the work that needs to be done to revitalize the economy that they support and in large part have created.C suite executives and business leaders, startup founders and entrepreneurs.

Minding the Machines: Building and Leading Data Science and Analytics Teams
Jeremy Adamson - 2021
This is a deceptively challenging goal since there are no templates to work from. Establishing a project management office, information services, or human resources department is an understood process and does not vary greatly between organizations. Establishing an analytics team, by contrast, requires a significant up-front investment in understanding and contextualizing the initiative. Many organizations have attempted to use operating models and templates from other functions, in particular IT and operations research. This fundamental misunderstanding of where analytics fits within an organization has led to visible failures and has set back the analytical maturity of many organizations. Business leaders need to hire or develop data-centric talent who are able to step back from analysis and project management to view their work through a lens of value-creation.Understand how organizations and practitioners need to structure, build, and lead a successful analytics team - to bridge the gap between business leaders and the analytical function. The analytics job market is very frothy, and the talent pool has swelled in recent years with engineers, actuaries, and scientists up-skilling and re-branding themselves as data scientists. This influx of highly technical specialists with limited leadership experience has had negative consequences for the practice as a whole.Minding the Machines is organized in three key pillars: Strategy, Process, and People.Strategy - How to assess organizational readiness, identify gaps, establish an attainable roadmap, and properly articulate a value proposition and case for change.Process - How to select and manage projects across their lifecycle including design thinking, risk assessment, governance, and operationalization.People - How to structure and engage a team, establish productive and parsimonious conventions, and to lead a distinct practice with unique requirements. Analytical practitioners want to read this book because career progression opportunities for analytical professionals are very limited. Despite reaching senior technical roles they often report to a business focused manager who understands little about the analytical function. Practitioners seek leadership opportunities, but do not have the tools to move into leadership roles or to be successful in them.Business leaders with foundational analytical abilities want to read this book because what they may have learned from other business units is at best not applicable to analytics teams, and at worst counterproductive. There needs to be a resource specific to this unique practice.Students want to read this book because though they are developing strong technical abilities and learning the newest techniques, they are not being instructed in business leadership in an analytics context. This gap in education is amplifying the problem as the profession moves away from long-horizon highly technical solutions and towards a focus on immediate value.

The Entrepreneurial Conspiracy: Six Behaviors That Conspire to Derail Your Company
Chuck Violand - 2021
This is because small businesses are reflections of their owners and frequently take on the owner's behavioral characteristics. Addressing a business problem without addressing the underlying behavior that causes it is like trying to correct a building's structural defect by applying a fresh coat of paint. It may look better, but the underlying problem is still there. It will eventually resurface, and when it returns, the problem is usually bigger and more costly to correct. This insightful book explores six common behaviors entrepreneurs and small business leaders subconsciously bring to their businesses; behaviors that limit growth, undermine effectiveness, and keep them from realizing the dreams they went into business to pursue. The behaviors explored in this book are: Blurred Vision, No Accountability, Heroic Managing, E-Drift, Hiding Out, and Swollen Ego. Rarely do these behaviors exist by themselves. Instead, the presence of one behavior frequently signals the presence of another. What's more, these behaviors are found in owners of all ages leading companies of all sizes.

Fair Pay: How to Get a Raise, Close the Wage Gap, and Build Stronger Businesses
David Buckmaster - 2021
The situation is only worsening. We do not have a common language to talk about pay, how it works at most companies, or a cohesive set of practical solutions for making pay more fair. Most blame the greed of America’s executive class, the ineptitude of government, or a general lack of personal motivation. But the negative effects of income inequality are a problem that can be solved. We don’t have to choose between effective government policy and the free market, between the working class and the job creators, or between socialism and capitalism, David Buckmaster, the Director of Global Compensation for Nike, argues. We do not have to give up on fixing what people are paid. Ideas like Universal Basic Income will not be enough to avoid the severe cultural disruption coming our way.Buckmaster examines income inequality through the design and distribution of income itself. He explains why businesses are producing no meaningful wage growth, regardless of the unemployment rate and despite sitting on record piles of cash and the lowest tax rates[0] in a generation . He pulls back the curtain on how corporations make decisions about wages and provides practical solutions—as well as the corporate language—workers need to get the best results when talking about money with a boss. The way pay works now will not overcome our most persistent pay challenges, including low and stagnant wages, unequal pay by race and gender, and executive pay levels untethered from the realities of the average worker. The compensation system is working as designed, but that system is broken. Fair Pay opens the corporate black box of pay decisions to show why businesses pay what they pay and how to make them pay more.
