The Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barret Barrett 1845-1846 Vol I (1899)

Robert Browning - 2006
1 of 2 After all, I need not give up the thought of doing that, too, in time; because even now, talking with whoever is worthy, I can give a reason for my faith in one and another excellence, the fresh strange music, the affluent language, the exquisite pathos and true new brave thought; but in this addressing myself to you your own self, and for the first time, my feeling rises altogether. I do, as I say, love these books with all my heart - and I love you too. Do you know I was once not very far from seeing - really seeing you? Mr. Kenyon said to me one morning 'Would you like to see Miss Barrett?' then he went to announce me, - then he returned .. you were too unwell, and now it is years ago, and I feel as at some untoward passage in my travels, as if I had been close, so close, to some world's-wonder in chapel or crypt, only a screen to push and I might have entered, but there was some slight, so it now seems, slight and just sufficient bar to admission, and the half-opened door shut, and I went home my thousands of miles, and the sight was never to be? I thank you, dear Mr. Browning, from the bottom of my heart. You meant to give me pleasure by your letter - and even if the object had not been answered, I ought still to thank you. But it is thoroughly answered. Such a letter from such a hand!

Things Kept, Things Left Behind

Jim Tomlinson - 2006
Jim Tomlinson’s characters each face the desire to reclaim dreams left behind, along with something of the dreamer that was also lost. Starkly rendered, these spiraling characters inhabit a specific place and class---small-town Kentucky, working-class America---but the stories, told in all their humor and tragedy, are universal. In each story the characters face conflict, sometimes within themselves, sometimes with each other. Each carries a past and with it an urge to return and repair. In “First Husband, First Wife,” ex-spouses are repeatedly drawn together by a shared history they cannot seem to escape, and they are finally forced to choose between leaving the past or leaving each other. LeAnn and Cass are grown sisters who conspire to help their prideful mother in “Things Kept.” “Prologue” is a voyeuristic journey through the surprisingly different lives of two star-crossed friends, each with its successes and pitfalls, told through their letters over thirty-five years. In “Stainless,” Annie and Warren divide their possessions on the final night of their marriage. Their realtor has advised them to “declutter” the house they are leaving, but they discover that most of the clutter cannot be so easily removed. The choices are never simple, and for every thing kept, something must be abandoned. Tomlinson’s characters struggle but eventually find their way, often unknowingly, to points of departure, to places where things just might change.

Karin H. Grimme - 2006

He returned to Paris in 1824 and started his triumphant career. In 1825 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor by King Charles X and was elected a member of the Academy. Though renowned for his painting of Oriental nudes reclining in harems or a Turkish baths, Ingres was also a master draughtsman, perhaps the most significant of the 19th century, and left 4000 sketches and drawings to his home town of Montauban. In opposition to the Romantics, Ingres upheld classical idealism with its clarity of line. His painting had a profound effect on artists like Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso and influenced, amongst others, Cindy Sherman and David Hockney.

The Life of Prophet Muhammad

'Abdul Waheed Khan - 2006
As he grew up, he watched with disgust the great drama of evil around him. He witnessed how the human soul was suppressed, how men were oppressing and exploiting the have-nots, orphans, women, and the weakest members of society, and how the wealthy and strong enslaved the poor and weak. Through ignorance, error, superstition, and outright perversity, people were debauched by evil. Tyranny reigned supreme. The society was drunk with arrogance, empty religious formalism, and luxury. In those times of ignorance, Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) grew up. He was upright and truthful, and earned the complete trust of the people of Makkah. Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) was never taught formally by any human, and yet, in years to come, he would teach the whole world such as no one else in human history has done. You owe it to yourself to find out about this giant of history: you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Containing a wide-ranging narrative by Saltzman—about everything from the story of how “Dear Prudence” came to be to George Harrison’s description of the first time he picked up a sitar—this unique and exclusive exploration of one of the Beatles’ most tender and bittersweet periods is a must-have for all fans of the legendary rock group.

Sturgeon Bay

Ann Jinkins - 2006
A canal dug from Sturgeon Bay to Lake Michigan in 1880 enabled ships to avoid the long passage over the tip of the peninsula. Sturgeon Bay became a shipbuilding capital, housing three major yards. The lively downtown districts on each side of the bay sported the typical hotels, taverns, stores, and blacksmith shops. Residents took pride in their newly formed schools, churches, and public services such as the Pioneer Fire Department. Families, fortunate to live in a land of great natural beauty, enjoyed recreational pursuits in the woods and on the water, whether it was perch fishing early on a summer morning or skating over the ice on a crisp winter afternoon.

Lucknow: City of Illusion

Rosie Llewellyn-Jones - 2006
The Northern Indian city of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, extends along the banks of the River Gomti. Once the center of an elaborate and highly sophisticated culture, and home to a variety of ethnic communities, Lucknow was also the sight of some of the most destructive fighting of the 1857 uprising. Many of its ornate and culturally diverse buildings were subsequently destroyed, and countless roads were rebuilt, effectively demolishing the thriving city that had once existed. This series of lovely 19th-century duotone photographs from the renowned Alkazi Collection follows the life and death of many of the city's most important buildings. Augmented by the work of world-class historians and architects, it reveals the important connections between the two disciplines, as played out in a city that is constantly changing, and forever adding to its rich historic past.
