To Draw Closer To God: A Collection Of Discourses

Henry B. Eyring - 1997
Eyring explains some of the ways we can claim these promises. In his thoughtful, spiritual style, he discusses such topics as learning to hear the Lord's voice, choosing to be good, overcoming trials of faith, strengthening the family, surrendering to Christ, and helping others draw closer to the Lord. Elder Eyring writes, "Yield your heart unto God. Ask him what it is he would have you do. Know that he will have prepared a way for you to do it, even under great difficulties. Ask him how he would have you share what you have with others, and you will feel his love. He lives and he loves you. He wants you to come home again." If you would like to have the Spirit of the Lord with you more often, if you would like to feel closer to your Father in Heaven and have him be closer to you, you'll appreciate the insights and messages in this collection of inspiring discourses

The Life and Teachings of the Prophet Joseph

Truman G. Madsen - 1997
Line upon line he uncovered doctrinal detail, then folded revealed messages into instructions for righteous and ultimately covenant-based living.Distinguished author and speaker Truman G. Madsen examines the development of Church doctrine through the revelatory experiences of Joseph Smith. He considers the Prophet's personal character and commitment to his call, then pursues the process of his acquiring and applying Christlike characteristics despite poverty and persecutions borne by himself, his family, and other Church members. Included is a thoughtful analysis that discusses Joseph's reception of divine principles and their subsequent application to the family, temple ordinances, and the long-term vision of the Church. The insights presented here, gained through exhaustive research and humble inspiration, give the listener a broader understanding and appreciation of Joseph Smith's role in the restoration of the gospel.

Meeting Your Goliath (Timeless Talks)

Thomas S. Monson - 1997
Jet-powered aircraft streaked toward specified targets, cannons roared, tanks lumbered, men fought and died, women wept, and children cried. The Holy Land, once the personal province of the Prince of Peace, was engulfed by war. This troubled land has witnessed much conflict throughout its history; its peoples have suffered terrible trials and tribulations. No single battle is better remembered, however, than occurred in the Valley of Elah during the year 1063 B.C. Along the mountains on one side, the feared armies of the Philistines were marshalled to march directly to the heart of Judah and the Jordan Valley. On the other side of the valley, King Saul had drawn up his armies in opposition. Historians tell us that the opposing forces were about evenly matched in number and in skill. However, the Philistines had managed to keep secret their valued knowledge of smelting and fashioning iron into formidable weapons of war. The sound of hammers pounding upon anvils and the sight of smoke rising skyward from many bellows as the smiths went about the task of sharpening weapons and fashioning new ones must have struck fear into the hearts of Saul's warriors, for even the most novice of soldiers could know the superiority of iron weapons to those of brass. As often happened when armies faced each other, individual champions challenged others from the opposing forces to single combat. There was considerable precedent for this sort of fighting; and on more than one occasion, notably during the tenure of Samson as judge, battles had been decided by individual combat. Now, however, the situation was reversed as far as Israel was concerned, and it was a Philistine who dared to challenge all others-a veritable giant of a man called Goliath of Gath. Old accounts tell us that Goliath was ten feet tall. He wore brass armor and a coat of mail. And the staff of his spear would stagger a strong man merely to lift, let alone hurl. His shield was the longest ever seen or heard of, and his sword a fearsome blade.

Believe in Miracles But Trust in Jesus

Adrian Rogers - 1997
At a game with your team losing and only two minutes to go. Or at home with a houseful of children and company coming at 7. In the midst of it you laughingly proclaim, I need a miracle! But you really mean it when the situation is critical--while sitting in a waiting room outside the I.C.U., while awaiting word about the latest company downsizing, or while in the long depression of losing a loved one. It is then you need, not just a miracle, but God Himself. This book communicates this at its core: Each divine miracle that occurs now--and that Jesus performed during His lifetime on earth--is intended to set your sights on the real answer to your need: the Savior. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. --John 20: 30-31 As Scripture says, the seven miracles that the apostle highlighted in the book of John were intended as signs. They carried a message--proof that Jesus was who He said, the Son of God. These miracles with a message from 2,000 years ago hold great relevance for you today. They serve as signposts pointing to Jesus, showing that He was and is God's answer to your deepest need. To your disappointments, doubts, disabilities, desires, despair, darkness, and death. While this book studies those seven key miracles, its overriding message is that God performs miracles--then and now--for one reason. Dr. Adrian Rogers puts it this way: Believe the miracles, but trust in God. Their purpose is to deepen ourtrust in Him, not in the miracles themselves. This thought-provoking, popularly written book will change the way you view God and His work in our lives.

Love Made Perfect: Foundations for the Holy Life

William M. Greathouse - 1997
Each text consists of 13 chapters written by a variety of well-qualified and thought-provoking Christian thinkers. The focus is on interaction and, of course, dialogue."So that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live" (Deuteronomy 30:6, NIV). For many people discovering perfect love seems a frustrating and futile search. Even Christians who accept God as a loving Father have difficulty defining the abstract concepts of holiness, sanctification, and in turn, perfect love. In the form of exposition and exercise, Dr. Greathouse has prepared a Wesleyan, biblically sound approach to teaching the message of holiness. Love Made Perfect defines the abstract and gives fullness and meaning to entire sanctification. Wes Tracy, former editor of the Herald of Holiness, contributes vital end-of-chapter exercises to create a deeper study of the book and bring the material to practical application.

Dr. Hahn takes the Mass from its place in the big picture of covenant theology and salvation history, and breaks it into bite size pieces for everyone to understand and enjoy. Beginning by pointing out the inner logic of the various parts of the Mass, Dr. Hahn explains in simple, yet comprehensive detail, the many parts and elements of the Mass from the entrance song, to the sign of the cross, to the final blessing and dismissal.

The History of the Church

Guy Bedouelle - 1997
In line with the general approach of the AMATECA Handbooks of Catholic Theology, this book offers an overview of the history of the church from a theological perspective. The first and last chapters present a theological view of church history drawn from the work of such thinkers as Jean Danielou, Gaston Fessard, Charles Journet, and Hans Urs von Balthasar. The second chapter is epistemological and methodological. Chapters 3 to 13 lucidly present the unfolding history of the church as a series of challenges--of the Barbarians, of Feudalism, of Lay Thought, of Ideologies and Cultures. Chapters 14 and 15, in a different key, sketch the variety of Eastern Churches and the forms of Protestantism."This will be a history of the high points. These events, from challenge to challenge, from shocks and tremors to recovery, through conversion and successive integration, give a kind of rhythm to this tale where the believer will always be able to distinguish between the wheat and the chaff and so discover the finger of God writing on the sands of time."--Guy Bedouelle

Farrar's unique teaching style blends humor and practicality with the tools fathers need to become all that God intended them to be as the leaders of their families."When a man gets serious about following Christ with his whole heart," Farrar says, "God desires to not only pour out His blessing on that man, but on his children, and his children's children.
