When God Whispers Your Name

Max Lucado - 1994
God is whispering your name.Somewhere, between the pages of this book and the pages of your heart, God is speaking. And He is calling you by name.Maybe that's hard to believe. Maybe you just can't imagine that the One who made it all thinks of you that personally -- that He keeps your name on His heart and lips. But it's true. In the Bible and in the circumstances of your life, He whispers your name lovingly. Tenderly. Patiently but persistently. Let these stories remind you of the God who knows your name. Some of the stories are from the Bible. Some are drawn from everyday life. Most are about people who are lost ... or weary ... or discouraged -- just like you may be. If you let them, they will tell the story of your life. And the story of a God who speaks into your situation. So listen closely as you turn these pages. Listen for the Father's gentle whisper that can erase your doubt, your sorrow, your weariness, your despair. It really is your name that you hear, and the Voice that calls is more loving that your ever dared dream. Listen. And learn to hope again.

The Cry of the Soul: How Our Emotions Reveal Our Deepset Questions about God

Dan B. Allender - 1994
I should know. I first read The Cry of the Soul decades ago when I was still sorting through a lot of hurt and frustration connected with my quadriplegia (yes, I read it on that music stand holding a mouth stick). The Cry of the Soul showed me what to do with my anger and hurt--not stuff it under the carpet of my conscience, or minimize it, but actually do something good with it."All emotion--whether positive or negative--can give us a glimpse of the true nature of God. We want to control our negative emotions and dark desires. God wants us to recognize them as the cry of our soul to be made right with Him. Beginning with the Psalms, Cry of the Soul explores what Scripture says about our darker emotions and points us to ways of honoring God as we faithfully embrace the full range of our emotional life.

The Christmas Story: What Really Happened

Chuck Missler - 1994
Chuck Missler, a widely recognized Biblical authority, updates his classic study of Christmas for 2007. He explores the background, and myths, surrounding our favorite holiday. What really happened in Bethlehem two thousand years ago? Who were the "Magi?" Why a virgin birth? What does a Christmas Tree have to do with it?Each year at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. After the New Year, we struggle to remember to add a year as we date our checks, which should remind us that the entire Western World reckons its calendar from the birth of the One who changed the world more than any other before or since. It is disturbing to discover that much of what we have been taught about the Christmas season seems to be more tradition than truth. Santa Claus isn't the only myth or legend that has arisen out of this season. On what "loophole" does the Messianic hope rest? Who were the Maji? And why a "virgin birth?" What does a Christmas Tree have to do with it?This study contains 2 hours of teachings

Nihilism: The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age

Seraphim Rose - 1994
Seraphim) undertook to write a monumental chronicle of the abandonment of Truth in the modern age. Of the hundreds of pages of material he compiled for this work, only the present essay has come down to us in completed form. Here Fr. Seraphim reveals the core of all modern thought and life—the belief that all truth is relative—and shows how this belief has been translated into action in our century. Today, four decades after he wrote it, this essay is more timely than ever. It clearly explains why contemporary ideas, values, and attitudes—the “spirit of the age”—are shifting so rapidly in the direction of moral anarchy, as the philosophy of Nihilism enters more deeply into the fiber of society. Nietszche was right when he predicted that the 20th century would usher in “the triumph of Nihilism.”“Atheism, true ‘existential’ atheism burning with hatred of a seemingly unjust or unmerciful God, is a spiritual state; it is a real attempt to grapple with the true God.… Nietzsche, in calling himself Antichrist, proved thereby his intense hunger for Christ.”This new second edition contains a superb essay entitled “The Philosophy of the Absurd,” written by Fr. Seraphim at the same time that he was working on “Nihilism.”

Parable of the Dancing God

C. Baxter Kruger - 1994
Baxter Kruger vividly retells the parable of the prodigal son (including the full text of Luke 15:1-32). His fresh interpretation focuses not on the prodigal son, but on the character of the father as it is revealed through his interaction with his two very different sons. Baxter asks you to consider with which son you most identify--the dutiful elder brother or the wayward younger brother. Then he helps you explore the spiritual implications of that identification. Finally, he shows you how an examination of the father of the two sons highlights important aspects of God's character: rejoicing, compassion and more. You'll come away from this short but profound study with new insight into the ways God the Father is at work in your own life.

A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus, Volume II - Mentor, Message, and Miracles

John P. Meier - 1994
In it he continues his quest for the answer to the greatest puzzle of modern religious scholarship: Who was Jesus? To answer this Meier imagines the following scenario: " Suppose that a Catholic, a Protestant, a Jew, and an agnostic were locked up in the bowels of the Harvard Divinity School library... and not allowed to emerge until they had hammered out a consensus document on who Jesus of Nazareth was and what he intended..." . "A Marginal Jew" is what Meier thinks that document would reveal. Volume one concluded with Jesus approaching adulthood. Now, in this volume, Meier focuses on the Jesus of our memory and the development of his ministry. To begin, Meier identifies Jesus's mentor, the one person who had the greatest single influence on him, John the Baptist. All of the Baptist's fiery talk about the end of time had a powerful effect on the young Jesus and the formulation of his key symbol of the coming of the " kingdom of God." And, finally, we are given a full investigation of one of the most striking manifestations of Jesus's message: Jesus's practice of exorcisms, hearings, and other miracles. In all, Meier brings to life the story of a man, Jesus, who by his life and teaching gradually made himself marginal even to the marginal society that was first centuryPalestine.

A Woman Rides the Beast

Dave Hunt - 1994
Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast.Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn’t such a view outdated? After all, today’s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. “The Catholic church has changed” is what we hear.Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist’s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman’s identity beyond any reasonable doubt.A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come.

Spirit with Our Spirit

Witness Lee - 1994
The revelation of the human spirit in the Bible points to the unique means whereby man can know and experience God. God is Spirit so that man can contact and receive Him, and man has a human spirit in order to contact and contain God. Through faith in Christ, our human spirit is born of the Holy Spirit, we are joined to the Lord as one spirit, and the Spirit witnesses with our spirit that we are the children of God. In The Spirit with Our Spirit, Witness Lee presents a deep, enlightening, yet wonderfully practical view of the believers' experience of God in the New Testament. By presenting a complete, scriptural view of both the divine Spirit and the human spirit, Lee shows that genuine spiritual experience is not a matter of outward behavior or conformity to a set of rules and regulations. Rather, genuine spirituality comes from knowing the Spirit, who is with our human spirit. God's desire to be received and enjoyed by His people can be realized only to the extent that we learn to walk according to the Spirit in our spirit. The Spirit with Our Spirit is an invaluable guide in this learning process.

The First Created Man

Symeon the New Theologian - 1994
For St. Symeon, theology is life -- the true "words of God" which speak to the Christian heart and inspire it to struggle for the Kingdom. These profound homilies on Adam and the future age are of special value because they give the theological foundation of the Christian life of struggle. The First-Created Man offers a vision of the beginning and the end of all things, which is essential to understanding the purpose of our existence here on this earth, and what lies beyond it.

Problems, God's Presence, and Prayer: Experience the Joy of a Successful Christian Life

Michael Wells - 1994
Financial concerns, marital discord, illness, loneliness, church splits; you name it, Christians have them. That's discouraging, and sometimes we compound these problems by imagining that problems are God's punishment for our past misdeeds. This is especially true if we fail to see god at work in our lives, if we aren't enjoying a rewarding prayer life, or if our relationship with the Lord seems to be a distance. In Problems, God's Presence and Prayer, Michael Wells shows how you can experience the joy of a closer walk with God. Through Bible teaching and real life examples, he shows how our loving Father uses problems to draw us nearer to Him in faith, not to push us away from Him in rejection. We will discover that we often prolong a trial because we trust in our own methods of coping - arguing, depression, hard work, or anger, for example - instead of surrendering total control of the situation to God.

The Nakedness of the Fathers: Biblical Visions and Revisions

Alicia Suskin Ostriker - 1994
Biblical interpretation combines with fantasy, autobiography, and poetry. Politics joins with eroticism. Irreverence coexists with a yearning for the sacred. Scholarship contends with heresy. Most excitingly, the author continues and extends the tradition of arguing with God that commences in the Bible itself and continues now, as it has for centuries, to animate Jewish writing. The difference here is that the voice that debates with God is a woman's. In her introduction, "Entering the Tents, " Ostriker defines the need to struggle against a tradition in which women have been silenced and disempowered - and to recover the female power buried beneath the surface of the biblical texts. In "The Garden, " she reinterprets the mythically complex stories of Creation. Then she considers the stories of "The Fathers, " from Abraham and Isaac to Moses, David, and Solomon - and their wives, mothers, and sisters. In "The Return of the Mothers, " she begins with a radical new interpretation of the book of Esther, includes a meditation on the silenced wife of Job and the idea of justice, and concludes with a fable on the death of God and a prayer to the Shekhinah, the feminine aspect of God. Ostriker refuses to dismiss the Bible as meaningless to women. Instead, in this angry, eloquent, visionary book, she attempts to recover what is genuinely sacred in these sacred texts.

How to Study the Bible

Chuck Missler - 1994
Most Christians, although they want to do in-depth Bible study, know little of the types, philosophies and tools of study available. Is the Bible to be taken literally or figuratively? What study aids would be most helpful in beginning my own home study library? Going through the Bible book by book. "Eat the elephant one bite at a time." These studies produce the most lasting results. There is a balance in the "whole counsel of God." Emmaus Road in Luke 24:27. Where to Start? A good "first book" is the Gospel of John: "A child can wade in it and an elephant can bathe in it!" Other good starting points include Genesis, Acts, Matthew, Daniel, and Revelation (Which is the only book which unequivocally promises a blessing to the reader). You are unique: let the Spirit lead you.

Why Do Christians Shoot Their Wounded?: Helping (Not Hurting) Those With Emotional Difficulties

Dwight L. Carlson - 1994
Thousands of Christians suffer real emotional pain--such as depression, anxiety, obsessiveness. Many other Christians, including prominent leaders, believe emotional problems are the result of sin or bad choices. These attitudes often only add to the suffering of those who hurt. In this book Dwight Carlson marshals recent scientific evidence that demonstrates many emotional problems are just as physical or biological as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. While he never discounts personal responsibility, Carlson shows from both the Bible and up-to-date medicine why it really is no sin to hurt. Understandably and compellingly, Why Do Christians Shoot Their Wounded? brings profound help for those who hurt and those who counsel. For those who suffer, here is a powerful liberation from guilt. For those who care for the suffering, here is vivid proof that those in emotional pain deserve compassion, not condemnation.

More Love to Thee: Life and Letters of Elizabeth Prentiss

George Lewis Prentiss - 1994

Ten Commandments

Arthur W. Pink - 1994
Pink looks into the origin of the The Commandments, their purpose for the Jewish people and their significance for Christians."There are two things which are indispensable to the Christian's life: first, a clear knowledge of duty, and second, a conscientious practice of duty corresponding to his knowledge. As we can have no well-grounded hope of eternal salvation without obedience, so we can have no sure rule of obedience without knowledge. Although there may be knowledge without practice, yet there cannot possibly be practice of God's will without knowledge. And therefore that we might be informed what we ought to do and what to avoid, it has pleased the Ruler and Judge of all the earth to prescribe for us laws for the regulating of our actions."Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Honey and Salt: Selected Spiritual Writings

Bernard of Clairvaux - 1994
His writings reveal a mystical theology that Thomas Merton, a monastic heir to Bernard’s Cistercian reform, says "explains what it means to be united to God in Christ but (also) shows the meaning of the whole economy of our redemption in Christ." Critical of the monastic opulence of his times, Bernard exhorted his monks to consider that "Salt with hunger is seasoning enough for a man living soberly and wisely." Martin Luther believed that Bernard was "the best monk that ever lived, whom I admire beyond all the rest put together."Bernard's zeal and charisma led to the reform of Christian life in medieval Europe. Today it is reported that Pope Benedict XVI keeps Bernard's treatise Advice to a Pope close at hand for spiritual support. Honey and Salt is an original selection for the general reader of Bernard’s sermons, treatises, and letters.

The Letters of Hildegard of Bingen, Vol. 1

Hildegard von Bingen - 1994
Addressed to some of the most notable people of the day, as well as to some of humble status, the correspondence reveals the saint in ways her more famous works leave obscure: as determined reformer, as castigating seer, as theoretical musician, as patient adviser, as exorcist. Sometimes diffident and restrained, sometimes thunderously imperious, her letters are indispensable to understanding fully this luminary of medieval philosophy, poetry, and music. In addition, they provide a fascinating glimpse at life in tumultuous twelfth-century Germany, beset with schism and political unrest. This first volume includes ninety letters to the highest ranking prelates in Hildegard's world--popes, archbishops, and bishops. Three following volumes will be divided according to the rank of the addressees.

Who Will Roll Away the Stone?: Discipleship Queries for First World Christians

Ched Myers - 1994
"In every age, " writes Myers, "disciples despair that the story has ended, only to discover that the stone 'has been rolled away, ' reopening the possibility - and imperative - of following the Way of Jesus." As a sequel to Binding the Strong Man, Who Will Roll Away the Stone? brings Myers' study of the gospel of Mark full circle. The first book provided a compelling reading of Mark's gospel as a manual of radical discipleship in the ancient Roman empire. Who Will Roll Away the Stone? picks up and extends the gospel's challenge specifically to those living in the contemporary imperial context. Each chapter opens with classic questions from within the gospel itself. Beginning with Peter's denial of Jesus, Who Will Roll Away the Stone? shows how and why first-world Christians - politically free, socially mobile, and resource-rich - seem typically unable or unwilling to struggle for social change. Myers uses three of the most troubling and problematic of recent events - the Los Angeles riots, the Gulf War, the Columbus quincentennial - to demonstrate how the subtle complexities of a culture of technological wizardy, information overload, and short-term memory can be recognized as blocking the first step on the journey of discipleship. Myers then turns to the second stage of discipleship which is conversion, literally a call to change direction both as individuals and as a society. He continues with a "deconstruction" of the modus vivendi of U.S. culture, using experiments in other ways of living, including social relocation andnonviolent politics. He then moves into the third stage of the call to discipleship, to reconstruct the church and the world through positive action: building solidarity with one another and with the poor, accepting and celebrating diversity and its gifts, and reclaiming the disco

1 John

Robert Smith Candlish - 1994
His aim was not so much to produce a detailed technical commentary after the fashion of much exegesis in the new German tradition, but to set on display the heights and depths of the theology of John's letter: 'it can be studied aright exegetically, only when it is studied theologically.' His driving purpose, like that of the apostle, is to see truth and joyful assurance born and brought to maturity in the hearts of his readers. The multi-faceted privileges of fellowship with the Father and the Son through the Spirit are constantly brought to the fore.

Kindling the Divine Spark: Teachings on How to Preserve Spiritual Zeal

Abbot Herman - 1994
St. Theophan had the exceptional gift of being able to encourage all, no matter where they were on the spiritual path, to go further in their fight against the passions and in their preparation for union with the Bridegroom Christ. His inspirational teaching is for all that sincerely seek the heavenly realm. He often used folk expressions in order to make profound, mystical realities understood by all Christians of his time. Bishop Theophan--young, zealous and energetic--felt a dire need to raise Orthodox women to a higher spiritual level in a society which was rapidly changing, going in step with modern ways. KINDLING THE DIVING SPARK offers his instructions given to women, examining many essentials of the spiritual life, including: how the heart is purified, inner suffering, spiritual zeal, how to train oneself to pray, and mystical union with the Lord. It contains 20 sermons to convents and a brief Life with unique information appearing for the first time, accompanied by rare photographs. Though originally offered as a volume of sermons given in women's monasteries, it comprises a conscious teaching of spirituality suited to the needs of both men and women, whether lay or monastic.

The Writings of Clement of Rome

Clement of Rome - 1994
The general opinion is, that he is the same as the person of that name referred to by St. Paul (Phil. iv.3). The writings themselves contain no statement as to their author. The first, and by far the longer of them, simply purports to have been written in the name of the church at Rome to the church at Corinth. But in the catalogue of contents prefixed to the ms. they are both plainly attributed to one Clement; and the judgment of most scholars is, that, in regard to the first epistle at least, this statement is correct, and that it is to be regarded as an authentic production of the friend and fellow worker of St. Paul. This belief may be traced to an early period in the history of the church. It is found in the writings of Eusebius (Hist. Eccl., iii.15), of Origen (Comm. in Joan., i.29), and others. The internal evidence also tends to support this opinion. The doctrine, style, and manner of thought are all in accordance with it; so that, although, as has been said, positive certainty cannot be reached on the subject, we may with great probability conclude that we have in this epistle a composition of that Clement who is known to us from Scripture as having been an associate of the great apostle.
