The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher

Lewis Thomas - 1978

On Human Nature

Edward O. Wilson - 1978
Wilson's book. On Human Nature begins a new phase in the most important intellectual controversy of this generation: Is human behavior controlled by the species' biological heritage? Does this heritage limit human destiny? With characteristic pugency and simplicity of style, the author of Sociobiology challenges old prejudices and current misconceptions about the nature-nurture debate. In his new preface E. O. Wilson reflects on how he came to write this book: how The Insect Societies led him to write Sociobiology, and how the political and religious uproar that engulfed that book persuaded him to write another book that would better explain the relevance of biology to the understanding of human behavior.

Why Big Fierce Animals Are Rare: An Ecologist's Perspective

Paul Colinvaux - 1978
Paul Colinvaux takes a penetrating look at the science of ecology, bringing to his subject both profound knowledge and an enthusiasm that will encourage a greater understanding of the environment and of the efforts of those who seek to preserve it.

The Foundations of Ethology

Konrad Lorenz - 1978
It is all the more welcome because such a grand theme as ethology calls for a range of perspectives. One reason is the overarching scope of the subject. Two great questions about life that constitute much of biology are "How does it work (structure and function)?" and "How did it get that way (evolu tion and ontogeny)?" Ethology addresses the antecedent of "it. " Of what are we trying to explain the mechanism and development? Surely behav ior, in all its wealth of detail, variation, causation, and control, is the main achievement of animal evolution, the essential consequence of animal structure and function, the raison d' etre of all the rest. Ethology thus spans between and overlaps with the ever-widening circles of ecol ogy over the eons and the ever-narrowing focus of physiology of the neurons. Another reason why the history of ethology needs perspectives is the recency of its acceptance. For such an obviously major aspect of animal biology, it is curious how short a time-less than three decades-has seen the excitement of an active field and a substantial fraternity of work ers, the addition of professors and courses to departments and curricula in biology (still far from universal}, and the normal complement of spe cial journals, symposia, and sessions at congresses."

The Year Of The Greylag Goose

Konrad Lorenz - 1978
Commentary and photographs of the Greylag goose tell the story of their family life structures which is similiar to human family life.

The Body in Question

Jonathan Miller - 1978
Jonathan Miller considers the functioning of the body as a subject of private experience. He explores our attitudes towards our bodies, our astonishing ignorance of them, and our inability to read our body's signals. Taking as his starting point the experience of pain, Dr. Miller analyzes the elaborate social process of "falling ill", considers the physical foundations of "dis-ease" and looks at the types of individuals man has historically attributed with the power of healing. His explanations are lucid, wide-ranging and whole-heartedly entertaining.

Roitt's Essential Immunology

Ivan M. Roitt - 1978
It is lavishly illustrated in full colour to make the illustrations even easier to understand. The book also contains suggestions for further reading, a detailed glossary of terms and abbreviations, and menus of contents that begin each chapter. A supporting web site at www.roitt.com contains self-assessment questions and answers combined with other useful lecture resources such as updates, further reading and image archive. The text has been extensively updated by Ivan Roitt with the help of a new co-author and outstanding teacher of Immunology, Peter Delves from UCL

Sex, Evolution and Behavior

Martin Daly - 1978
The relation between ultimate and proximate levels of explanation is the major theme of the book. Two new chapters in this edition incorporate findings from recent research and there is also new material on humans, physiology, and development. Sex and reproductive behaviour are examined from an evolutionary comparative perspective and numerous empirical studies and examples are cited.

McClane's Field Guide to Saltwater Fishes of North America

A.J. McClane - 1978
    J. McClane profiles more than three hundred North American saltwater game fishes in this authoritative and fully illustrated handbook.

The Craft of Dying: The Modern Face of Death (The MIT Press)

Lyn H. Lofland - 1978
This anniversary edition of Lyn Lofland's The Craft of Dying begins to repair this omission. Lofland identifies, critiques, and theorizes 1970s death movements, including the Death Acceptance Movement, the Death with Dignity Movement, and the Natural Death movement. All these groups attempted to transform death into a “positive experience,” anticipating much of today's death and dying activism. Lofland turns a sociologist's eye on the era's increased interest in death, considering, among other things, the components of the modern “face of death” and the “craft of dying,” the construction of a dying role or identity by those who are dying, and the constraints on their freedom to do this. Lofland wrote just before the AIDS epidemic transformed the landscape of death and dying in the West; many of the trends she identified became the building blocks of AIDS activism in the 1980s and 1990s. The Craft of Dying will help readers understand contemporary death social movements' historical relationships to questions of race, class, gender, and sexuality and is a book that everyone interested in end-of-life politics should read.

Pathophysiology: Clinical Concepts of Disease Processes

Sylvia A. Price - 1978
This comprehensive textbook, with its traditional presentation of content, integrates basic science with clinical practice and focuses on the alterations in biologic processes that affect the body's equilibrium. Highly readable, it includes shorter, more focused chapters, and end-of-chapter study questions.A body systems approach presents the material in a logical order.Introductory chapters are included on concepts that affect all body systems to provide a foundation for understanding disease processes.Anatomy and physiology are reviewed for each body system to provide a basis for understanding the alterations in function affecting that system.Eighty-two short chapters break content into more manageable sections and make a difficult subject easier to teach and learn.Outlines with page numbers at the beginning of each chapter help students focus on the most important concepts and provide easy access to chapter content.Study questions are provided for every chapter to help students review material and assess their knowledge and understanding. Answers are included for immediate feedback.About 725 illustrations clarify difficult concepts and demonstrate normal and disease processes.70 full-color plates depict disease manifestations and enhance the text descriptions of these conditions.- Comprehensive Key Concepts reviews at the end of each chapter help students review material.- Completely revised chapters on Heredity, Environment, and Disease (Ch. 2); Cerebrovascular Disease (Ch. 53); Adrenal Insufficiency (Ch. 62); and Infections of the Genital Tract (Ch. 66).- Extensive chapter rewrites on White Blood Cell and Plasma Cell Disorders (Ch. 18); Anatomy of the Cardiovascular System (Ch. 28); Physiology of the Cardiovascular System (Ch. 29); Cardiac Mechanical Dysfunction and Circulatory Support (Ch. 33); Seizure Disorders (Ch. 55); Pancreas: Glucose Metabolism and Diabetes Mellitus (Ch. 63); and Female Reproductive System Disorders (Ch. 64).- MERLIN website featuring Student Resources and Instructor Resources. Students will be able to access additional study questions, chapter objectives, key terms with definitions, and web links. Faculty can obtain the Instructor's Resource Manual, Test Bank, and Case Studies online. Instructor Resource materials will also be available on a CD-ROM.- Numbered boxes help students find information quicker and easier.- Additional 16 full-color plates featuring such illustrations as acute hemorrhagic gastritis (stress ulcer), appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, primary, secondary and congenital syphilis, and primary herpes, brings the total to 70 full-color plates.- Over 40 new 2-color line illustrations augment the text description of concepts and processes.- Integrates the most up-to-date research findings, diagnostic procedures and preventive measures, and current treatments throughout to demonstrate clinical application of knowledge.

Keith County Journal

John Janovy Jr. - 1978
and his students into the sandhills, marshes, grasslands, canyons, lakes, and streams of Keith County in western Nebraska. The biologist explores the web of interrelationships among land, animals, and human beings. Even termites, snails, and barn swallows earn respect and assume significance in the overall scheme of things. Janovy, reminiscent of Henry David Thoreau in his acute powers of observation and search for wisdom, has written a new foreword for this Bison Books edition.
