Recovering America: A More Gentle Way To Build

Malcolm Wells - 2001
A pioneer and a legend in ecological building circles, he has created a unique and intimate portrait of architecture in America that will open your eyes to the absurdity of current trends in building. This is a quirky but appealing volume, hand-lettered by the author and filled with color photography and the author's original water colors, all for $9.95! (The low price is made possible by support from the Graham Foundation, who want the author's vision distributed as widely as possible.) In the author's words, "We look at architecture the wrong way: sideways. To see architecture fully you must tip it up, stand it on its edge. When you do, you always see dead land on display".The author' solution is to portray America from the air, showing how it is and how it might be. We have bankrupted our landscape. Wells's vision is to literally "recover" America (and indeed the world) by designing buildings that can be covered with earth and then beautifully landscaped. he does not advocate living in holes in the ground, but rather designing structures that do not disrupt the precious skin of the planet. As radical as are Wells's views, they make tremendous sense in terms of energy conservation, resource reduction, and aesthetics. This thoroughly engaging book will interest city planners, builders, architects, students, or anyone interested in a different vision of our national landscape.

Representing Rape: Language and Sexual Consent

Susan Ehrlich - 2001
Susan Ehrlich argues that language is central to all legal settings - specifically sexual harassment and acquaintance rape hearings where linguistic descriptions of the events are often the only type of evidence available. Language does not simply reflect but helps to construct the character of the people and events under investigation. The book is based around a case study of the trial of a male student accused of two instances of sexual assault in two different settings: a university tribunal and a criminal trial. This case is situated within international studies on rape trials and is relevant to the legal systems of the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. She shows how culturally-dominant notions about rape percolate through the talk of sexual assault cases in a variety of settings and ultimately shape their outcome. Ehrlich hopes that to understand rape trials in this way is to recognize their capacity for change. By highlighting the underlying preconceptions and prejudices in the language of courtrooms today, this important book paves the way towards a fairer judicial system for the future.

On Desperate Seas

James Pattinson - 2001
None of the crew is particularly gratified when the British tanker Rosa Dartle is chosen to carry a cargo of industrial alcohol from Philadelphia to Russia. For these are the dark days of World War II when convoys are receiving the full attention of U-boats and the Luftwaffe. And when six American seamen are embarked to take passage to Archangel there is concocted a human mixture as explosive as the liquid swilling in the tanks. The men range from Joe Kline, born in Chicago, with a tough life as a prize-fighter behind him, and full of the dangerous hatred of the small-minded, to Steve Carson, a man of different calibre, as tough as Kline, but without the anger. In between are a collection of characters as mismatched as any crew of sailors could ever be. After prolonged attacks by submarine and aircraft this motley collection of men continue their fight for survival in an open boat, and later, on the mainland in pitiless Arctic conditions. But, in their struggle against the elements and each other the biggest question is who will win? Praise for James Pattinson ‘A crisp storyline and credible characters make it a cracker of a tale’ - Bolton Evening News ‘Moves swiftly through coincidence and suspense, action and violence to a wholly unexpected denouement’ - British Book News ‘There is a tang of the sea and plenty of excitement’ - Birmingham Mail ‘The characterization of the crew under stress makes it live’ - Eastern Daily Press James Pattinson is a full-time author who, despite having travelled throughout the world, still lives in the remote village of East Harling in Norfolk where he grew up.
