The Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM
Aljean Harmetz - 1977
From this was born The Wizard of Oz, a film that, 60 years later, continues to captivate us. It seems we can never get enough of the dishy inside details, the amazing feats of production that made it such a spectacle, and the personalities both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Now, timed to coincide with the theatrical rerelease -- which will include never-before-seen footage -- this is the book Oz aficionados will turn to for more information on America's favorite movie. A bestselling classic since it was first published in 1977, The Making of The Wizard of Oz is as ageless as the film itself jam-packed with fascinating facts and telling asides.

Who Pays The Ferryman?
Michael J. Bird - 1977
It was 35 years since Alan Haldane had been in Crete, fighting with the partisans, lauded as a hero. Thirty-five years since he'd seen Melina or had word of her. Now he was going back, trying to rediscover in Crete what he had lacked in England: a sense of place, of peace. He couldn't find Melina, and he couldn't forget her, but he discovered that she had borne him a daughter, who was as blind to his existence as he had been to hers. He could not acknowledge her, could not let the past disrupt the present. Yet when he met Annika, and knew he could love her, he could not dispel the shadow cast between them by the ghosts of the war years. He was caught between fear and longing, in a trap that he had laid years before. He was not the only one who remembered. His presence on the island slowly rekindled a vendetta, a blood feud that could end his agony of indecision so simply -- by death.
Authenticity: A Biblical Theology of Discernment
Thomas Dubay - 1977
To a point this may help, but sad experience makes clear that these approaches alone never heal the polarization problems which plague our civil and ecclesial life. The Biblical therapy is radically different - and it achieves results. This book explores the divine strategy in detail. Research discovers in Scripture 40 or 50 themes that bear on discovering truth and recognizing that it has been solidly found. We learn how we discern whether we are being led by the Holy Spirit or by our own unredeemed inclinations and desires, whether it is the spirit of God or the prince of darkness that is operating in our disagreements and programs. We find in these themes clear responses to key questions:• Why are there divisions and factions in the Church?• How are these polarizations to be healed?• What are the sure signs that some people have truth, while others are in error?• What are the conditions for finding and maintaining a shared vision in marriage, parishes, dioceses, religious orders, the universal Church?

R.A. Torrey - 1977
– 2 Corinthians 5:20 How to Bring Men to Christ sheds light on how to reach the lost with the gospel – not new light, but tested and true light. Reuben A. Torrey will show you how to use appropriate, applicable Bible passages to reach every kind of lost individual. Regardless of the angle the lost may use to try to justify why they remain in their sad condition, Torrey offers Scripture passages and biblical principles that have proven to reach even the most stubborn of the unsaved. This is an excellent resource and training manual to equip individuals and groups to share the gospel with the lost. Some of the topics covered in this book: Dealing with yourself first Dealing with the indifferent or careless Dealing with people who desire to be saved, but do not know how Dealing with those who desire to be saved but who have difficulties Dealing with those who entertain false hopes Dealing with those who lack assurance and dealing with backsliders Dealing with professed skeptics and infidels Dealing with the complaining Dealing with those who wish to put off a decision until some other time Dealing with the willful and the deceived The baptism of the Holy Spirit About the Author Reuben Archer Torrey traveled all over the world leading evangelistic tours, preaching to the unsaved. Stalinism and Bolshevism: Concerning the Historical and Theoretical Roots of the Fourth International
Leon Trotsky - 1977
They attracted all the praise and they bore all the hatred. The reason for this is not difficult to understand. The October Russian Revolution, led by the Bolshevik Party, was the greatest event in history. For the first time, the workers and peasant took power into their hands, swept aside the landlords and capitalists, and proceeded to organise a democratic workers’ Soviet Republic. The authority of the new Soviet government rested upon a congress of soviets (workers’ committees) elected from factories and barracks.Leon Trotsky, who was a political giant, built and led the Red Army from scratch. After Lenin’s death, it was Trotsky who led the struggle against Stalinism, for which he paid the ultimate price by his murder in 1940 at the hands of a Stalinist agent.
Torture and the Law of Proof: Europe and England in the Ancien Régime
John H. Langbein - 1977
Langbein explores the world of the thumbscrew and the rack, engines of torture authorized for investigating crime in European legal systems from medieval times until well into the eighteenth century. Drawing on juristic literature and legal records, Langbein's book, first published in 1977, remains the definitive account of how European legal systems became dependent on the use of torture in their routine criminal procedures, and how they eventually worked themselves free of it. The book has recently taken on an eerie relevance as a consequence of controversial American and British interrogation practices in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In a new introduction, Langbein contrasts the "new" law of torture with the older European law and offers some pointed lessons about the difficulty of reconciling coercion with accurate investigation. Embellished with fascinating illustrations of torture devices taken from an eighteenth-century criminal code, this crisply written account will engage all those interested in torture's remarkable grip on European legal history.
