A New History of Western Philosophy

Anthony Kenny - 2007
Now these four splendid books have been combined into one magnificent volume, providing a continuous sweeping account of the great thought of the Western world. Here readers will find not only an authoritative guide to the history of philosophy, but also a compelling introduction to every major area of philosophical inquiry. Kenny tells the story of philosophy chronologically, his lively narrative bringing the great philosophers to life and filling in the historical and intellectual background to their work. Kenny also looks closely at each of the main areas of philosophical exploration: knowledge and understanding; science; metaphysics; mind and soul; the nature and content of morality; political philosophy; and God. A New History of Western Philosophy is a stimulating chronicle of the intellectual development of Western civilization, allowing readers to trace the birth and growth of philosophy from antiquity to the present day.

The Spirit of the Liturgy

Benedict XVI - 1918
In his own foreward to the book, Cardinal Ratzinger compares this work to a much earlier classic of the same title by Romano Guardini because Ratzinger feels that his insights here are similar with what Guardini achieved in his time regarding a renewed understanding of the Liturgy. My purpose here is to assist this renewal of understanding of the Liturgy. Its basic intentions coincide with what Guardini wanted to achieve. The only difference is that I have had to translate what Guardini did at the end of the First World War, in a totally different historical situation, into the context of our present-day questions, hopes and dangers. Like Guardini, I am not attempting to involve myself with scholarly discussion and research. I am simply offering an aid to the understanding of the faith and to the right way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy.

Guy Hater: A Romantic Comedy

Ethan Asher - 2019
Is there any phrase more chilling than that? Probably. But for me, they are the only words I’ve dreaded hearing since Guy Finch left our small town. My brother’s best friend. The bane of my childhood. Newest resident of Whispering Pine. There’s a fine line between love and hate, but when it comes to Guy, there’s no overlap. I hate him more than brownies with nuts. Cookies with raisins. Pineapple. On. Pizza. I’ve done everything in my power apart from black magic to avoid our reunion, but in a town as small as Whispering Pine, it’s only a matter of time before we cross paths. But I’m not the same girl I used to be. I’m well on my way to being a lead interior designer (in the next few years). I have a roof over my head (that only leaks when it rains). I have a car that runs (most of the time). I’m ready for anything life might throw at me. But when I’m assigned a new client for a renovation project, he’s the last person I expect to walk into the room. “I look forward to working together,” Guy 2.0 says. I don’t remember that rough, chiseled jawline. I don’t remember those mouth-watering, harder than granite muscles. And I certainly don’t remember his smile ever making my knees so wobbly. It seems I’ve forgotten everything about the Guy I loved to hate. But no matter how hard I try, I can’t forget the taste of his lips when we kissed. And he won’t let me. Guy Hater is a full-length standalone enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy. It’s light. It’s fun. And it will make you swoon through fits of giggles!

The Situation and the Story: The Art of Personal Narrative

Vivian Gornick - 2001
In a story or a novel the "I" who tells this tale can be, and often is, an unreliable narrator but in nonfiction the reader must always be persuaded that the narrator is speaking truth. How does one pull from one's own boring, agitated self the truth-speaker who will tell the story a personal narrative needs to tell? That is the question The Situation and the Story asks--and answers. Taking us on a reading tour of some of the best memoirs and essays of the past hundred years, Gornick traces the changing idea of self that has dominated the century, and demonstrates the enduring truth-speaker to be found in the work of writers as diverse as Edmund Gosse, Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, or Marguerite Duras. This book, which grew out of fifteen years teaching in MFA programs, is itself a model of the lucid intelligence that has made Gornick one of our most admired writers of nonfiction. In it, she teaches us to write by teaching us how to read: how to recognize truth when we hear it in the writing of others and in our own.

Implementing Domain-Driven Design

Vaughn Vernon - 2013
Vaughn Vernon couples guided approaches to implementation with modern architectures, highlighting the importance and value of focusing on the business domain while balancing technical considerations.Building on Eric Evans’ seminal book, Domain-Driven Design, the author presents practical DDD techniques through examples from familiar domains. Each principle is backed up by realistic Java examples–all applicable to C# developers–and all content is tied together by a single case study: the delivery of a large-scale Scrum-based SaaS system for a multitenant environment. The author takes you far beyond “DDD-lite” approaches that embrace DDD solely as a technical toolset, and shows you how to fully leverage DDD’s “strategic design patterns” using Bounded Context, Context Maps, and the Ubiquitous Language. Using these techniques and examples, you can reduce time to market and improve quality, as you build software that is more flexible, more scalable, and more tightly aligned to business goals.
