Uranium: War, Energy, and the Rock That Shaped the World
Tom Zoellner - 2009
After World War II, it reshaped the global order-whoever could master uranium could master the world. Marie Curie gave us hope that uranium would be a miracle panacea, but the Manhattan Project gave us reason to believe that civilization would end with apocalypse. Slave labor camps in Africa and Eastern Europe were built around mine shafts and America would knowingly send more than six hundred uranium miners to their graves in the name of national security. Fortunes have been made from this yellow dirt; massive energy grids have been run from it. Fear of it panicked the American people into supporting a questionable war with Iraq and its specter threatens to create another conflict in Iran. Now, some are hoping it can help avoid a global warming catastrophe. In "Uranium," Tom Zoellner takes readers around the globe in this intriguing look at the mineral that can sustain life or destroy it.
Sciencia: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astronomy for All
Burkard Polster - 2011
Lavishly illustrated with engravings, woodcuts, and original drawings and diagrams, Sciencia will inspire readers of all ages to take an interest in the interconnected knowledge of the modern sciences.Beautifully produced in thirteen different colors of ink, Sciencia is an essential reference and an elegant gift.Wooden Books was founded in 1999 by designer John Martineau near Hay-on-Wye. The aim was to produce a beautiful series of recycled books based on the classical philosophies, arts and sciences. Using the Beatrix Potter formula of text facing picture pages, and old-styles fonts, along with hand-drawn illustrations and 19th century engravings, the books are designed not to date. Small but stuffed with information. Eco friendly and educational. Big ideas in a tiny space. There are over 1,000,000 Wooden Books now in print worldwide and growing.
Dogs and Love - Stories of Fidelity
Ferris Robinson - 2013
Each short story is about a dog, love and the special bond that can form between dogs and people. Love stories for all ages, almost any of these short stories could be a bedtime story for children, although they run the emotional gamut from absurdity to poignancy. The language is clean, and although the loss of a pet is always sad, the idea of dressing a chihuahua in a red corduroy coat is funny, quickly bringing a smile. Almost every true story in this collection is either about a chihuahua or a mix thereof, and/or the abandoned hound that claimed a family as his own. One is about a lost mother dog who depended on the kindness of strangers after delivering her puppies in a cave on the side of a cliff. Another is about a little dog's grief when her master died; although he was important enough to be mourned by an entire city, Mopsy's sorrow was heartbreaking. Most of the dogs in these stories came from an animal shelter, and the fidelity that each rescue dog demonstrates, from utter loyalty to pure devotion, makes a master humble.Perhaps you will recognize and remember some of the dogs you have loved over the years as you read these stories, and realize how important dogs truly are in the emotional lives of humans
Stereochemistry of Organic Compounds: Principles and Applications
D. Nasipuri - 2011
* A large cross-section of organic reactions/mechanisms given with stereochemical implications. * Relationship between conformation and reactivity specially highlighted. * Instrumentation techniques relating to stereochemical investigation discussed in simple language.ABOUT THE BOOK:During recent years, stereochemistry has undergone a phenomenal growth both in theory and practice, with a concomitant increase of interest among the organic chemists, biological chemists, medicinal chemists, and pharmacologists. The present text provides an up-to-date, coherent, and comprehensive account of the subject starting from the fundamentals and leading up to the latest developments as far as practicable. Emphasis has been placed on a symmetry-based approach to molecular chirality, stereochemical terminologies (modern stereochemistry is replete with them), topicity and prostereoisomerism, conformational analysis, dynamic stereochemistry, chiroptical properties, and assignment of absolute configuration to chiral molecules. Dynamic stereochemistry has been discussed with reference to conformation-reactivity correlation, stereoselective synthesis, and pericyclic reactions. A large cross-section of organic reactions with stereochemical implication has been incorporated. Attempts have been made to familiarise the readers with modern instrumental techniques, nuclear magnetic resonance in particular, used for stereochemical investigation. Each chapter is provided with a summary which highlights the main points of the text. CONTENTS: * Molecular Geometry and Chemical Bonding * Molecular Symmetry and Chirality * Stereoisomerism: Definitions and Classifications * Stereoisomerism and Centre of Chirality * Stereoisomerism: Axial Chirality, Planar Chirality and Helicity * Topicity and Prostereoisomerism * Racemisation and Methods of Resolution * Determination of Configuration * Conformations of Acyclic Molecules * Conformations of Cyclic Systems: Monocyclic Compounds * Conformations of Cyclic Systems: Fused Ring and Bridged Ring Compounds * Dynamic Stereochemistry I: Conformation and Reactivity * Dynamic Stereochemistry II:Stereoselective Reactions * Dynamic Stereochemistry III:Pericyclic Reactions * Molecular Dissymmetry and Chiroptical Properties * Molecular Recognition: Chemical and Stereochemical AspectsREADERSHIP: * Graduate and postgraduate students of Chemistry courses * University and college libraries * Biochemists, Medical and Pharmacology students and other related professionalsNew Academic Science is a newly established Science, Technical and Medical publisher. We offer high level text and reference titles to the academic community.
