Looking Past
Katharine E. Smith - 2014
Completely unprepared and suffering an acute sense of loss, she and her father continue quietly, trying to live by the well-intentioned advice of friends, hoping that time really is a great healer and that they will, eventually, move on. Life changes very little until Sarah leaves for university and begins her first serious relationship. Along with her new boyfriend comes his mother, the indomitable Hazel Poole. Despite some misgivings, Sarah finds herself drawn into the matriarchal Poole family and discovers that gaining a mother figure in her life brings mixed blessings. A mother-in-law who just can't let her sons grow up, a midwife who treats her charges like girls in a private school dormitory. These are some of the people who Sarah must deal with as her own pregnancy turns to motherhood and she realises that she must find her own two feet. Looking Past is a tale of family, friendship, love, life and death – not necessarily in that order. This is the second novel from Katharine E. Smith, author of Writing the Town Read. The narrator’s voice is clear and strong, with vivid descriptions and intelligent observations. Readers will quickly empathise with Sarah, whose grief and confusion at the loss of her mother at key moments in her life is contrasted with a dry and sometimes subtle humour derived from situations and characters which help colour the book. The father-daughter relationship which develops between the bereaved husband and daughter feels very real, as both come to terms with their grief and learn how best to live together. Sarah's father is unassuming and appealing, as he struggles to find a way to deal with his broken heart and support his daughter throughout school, puberty and on into adulthood. Smith's readers have praised her honesty, realism, warmth and humour. Both Looking Past and Writing the Town Read - Katharine's first novel - are written from a strong female first person perspective. However, don't be fooled into thinking this is chick lit - or indeed exclusively women's fiction. Looking Past has received praise from a number of male readers, including an ex-US Marine. You don't get much more macho than that! Nevertheless, this is a story guaranteed to strike a chord with mothers, daughters - and daughters-in-law - everywhere. The dual settings of Yorkshire and Cornwall will interest people with strong links to those places but the characters and events hold universal appeal. This is a book for people who like people. Looking Past was selected for the People's Book Prize Winter 2015 Collection.

Helltown: A Horror Novel
Stephen Bentley - 2015
It's nothing like the suburb you might live in . . . Unless, that is, an insane, Listerine-guzzling Realtor sold you your house? Or perhaps your postman happens to have a disturbing relationship with his claw hammer? A grieving Dan LaBarbara knows something is different in Helltown as soon as he comes back home. Yeah, sure, the town always been a little off. You can feel that about the place, like if you stepped into a house whose only occupants were freshly murdered corpses in an upstairs bedroom. But this is something else entirely. Standing in his little brother Barbie's basement workshop, holding one of those dioramas Barbie's been building since the accident, the ones that seem to move when you hold them, Dan can feel Barbie's terror. Barbie must know something is coming, something big, something evil. He's trying to warn Dan in the only way he knows. Why else would Barbie build a diorama depicting a man-sized version of a cartoon rabbit with bloody teeth about to devour a trembling teenager? Why else would he spend so much time crafting an intricate model of Death standing over a pimply teenager in the school library? And let's not even talk about that little model of the mob of undead surrounding the massive tower of vicious black spines behind the high school. Hilltown has a story to tell, and the lonely brain-damaged man who builds magical dioramas in his basement workshop has been telling it all along. As the evil closes in around them, Dan and his new love interest Jessica must do the impossible: save everyone one in Hilltown before it's too late.

Gray Wolf Security: Wyoming
Glenna Sinclair - 2017
Enjoy the complete Volume 3 of the Gray Wolf Security series. Romance, Suspense, Mystery and a touch of Comedy. 5 Books. No Cliffhangers. More than 1,000 pages :) HANK I’m a cowhand. I’ve never pretended to be anything more, but that didn’t give her the right to pretend that I wasn’t smart enough to have read all those fancy books she taught her students, or that I wasn’t brave enough to have served my country. Her and her privileged background—what did she know about working for a living? What did she know about pride and bravery? But there was something about her, something irresistible. And when she got herself caught up in the middle of the very first case Gray Wolf Security’s newest office was assigned to handle—that I was assigned to handle—I couldn’t quite find a way to keep my distance from her. Would I have kept my distance if I’d known I’d have to make a choice between her and Sutherland Knight, my best friend’s widow, and my boss? What the hell have I gotten myself into? GRAINGER I grew up on a farm, but I left there the moment I could to join the Navy and then I got myself engaged to a Santa Monica beauty. The last thing I wanted was to be shipped off to Wyoming to go back to the life I'd left behind. But here I was, pretending to be married to a short, curvy woman who was nothing like the beauty who ran off with my best buddy. I don't know why Ash Grayson would think joining this new satellite office of Gray Wolf would help heal my broken heart. Yet, there was something beautiful in the simplicity of small town life. And Eve Spraberry might not be the angel the town seemed to think she was, but she was angelic enough to distract me from the life I left behind and that was kind of the point, wasn't it? LANCE Becky was a mystery from the moment I set eyes on her. I knew she was a single mother and that sometimes came with some wariness, but her resistance to my charms was extraordinarily strong. She wanted me—I could feel it in her kisses—but she pulled away when things got too deep. I could never have imagined, however, how dark the mystery really was. No one could have guessed that Becky, MidKnight Ranch's reliable employee over the past five years, was on the run from the FBI. Yet, here we were, running from an FBI agent, sleeping on the frozen ground and planning on abandoning everything we'd ever known—including her daughter. What had I gotten myself into with this woman? And how was I going to get out? Did I even want to get out? CLINTON I came here for my own reasons, the job just playing a secondary role to my prime objective. It was fortuitous when the Mahoney raid was suggested and my captain gave me the opportunity to take part. After all, I'd worked with the DEA in Florida, at least as far as he knew. Taking down a drug operation like the Mahoney Cartel should be just a walk in the park for me. I didn't anticipate it turning into a complete ambush or that she would be the one to come to my rescue. She was beautiful and resourceful, but she was a distraction. I couldn't let anything stand in the way of me and my prime objective. SUTHERLAND I’m a widow. I’m a mother. I’m a rancher. Nowhere in that description is lover or savior. But some cosmic force thought it would be hilarious to throw in the Hollywood hunk next door at the same time some massive criminal organization decides to kidnap my dead husband’s best friend, my mentor, my friend. To add to the list, someone’s been sabotaging my ranch and someone else has been stealing secrets from my office and giving them to the enemy. Or maybe it’s the same person.
