The Demons of Paris
Eric Flint - 2018
Demons, imps, and spirits, evil and benign, spill into the universe from the netherworld. In Paris, a series of grisly murders that couldn't possibly be performed by a human, no matter how depraved, leads the Grand Chatelet and his men to try and raise a demon of their own to learn how to combat the creature that is terrorizing the city. Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—the demon who is summoned brings with him a van from the Paris of the twenty-first century. The van contains a modern day drama teacher, her son, and eight precocious high school students—along with all of their electronic devices. Soon, their laptops, tablets and cell-phones become possessed by imps and spirits of the netherworld, some of whom are brilliant and all of whom are insatiably curious. Soon it's a race to see which pack of outsiders can create the most turmoil in the late Middle Ages—monstrous demons or precocious teenagers who soon have their own allies and followers among the ranks of demonkind. And King Charles V had already been in trouble! Piled onto his own poor health, a suspicious and contentious church, France's always-quarrelsome nobility—worst of all, his unscrupulous and ambitious brother, Philip the Bold—the king now has both demons and people from the future to contend with. He does have one asset—and not a small one. He can place his trusted Constable of France, Bertrand du Guesclin, in charge of the rambunctious teenagers from the future and their ever-growing legion of demons. And Bertrand has a great asset of his own—his wife Tiphaine de Raguenel, perhaps the best astrologer in all of France and, for sure and certain, not a woman to take seriously the prattling nonsense of youngsters skeptical of her lore and knowledge.

Confessions of a Young Novelist
Umberto Eco - 2011
In these "confessions," the author, now in his late seventies, looks back on his long career as a theorist and his more recent work as a novelist, and explores their fruitful conjunction. He begins by exploring the boundary between fiction and nonfiction--playfully, seriously, brilliantly roaming across this frontier. Good nonfiction, he believes, is crafted like a whodunnit, and a skilled novelist builds precisely detailed worlds through observation and research. Taking us on a tour of his own creative method, Eco recalls how he designed his fictional realms. He began with specific images, made choices of period, location, and voice, composed stories that would appeal to both sophisticated and popular readers. The blending of the real and the fictive extends to the inhabitants of such invented worlds. Why are we moved to tears by a character's plight? In what sense do Anna Karenina, Gregor Samsa, and Leopold Bloom "exist"?At once a medievalist, philosopher, and scholar of modern literature, Eco astonishes above all when he considers the pleasures of enumeration. He shows that the humble list, the potentially endless series, enables us to glimpse the infinite and approach the ineffable. This "young novelist" is a master who has wise things to impart about the art of fiction and the power of words.
Pablo Escobar: A Life From Beginning to End
Hourly History - 2018
An international drug kingpin with a cult following, Pablo Escobar is legendary for his infamy, but he began his life with rather modest roots. Born to a simple farmer, no one ever dreamed Escobar would become the number one drug dealer in the world. He carved out a drug empire in the city of Medellín, Colombia and the surrounding Aburrá Valley and Andes mountain range. Inside you will read about... ✓ The Son of a Farmhand ✓ Pablo’s Political Career ✓ The Hit Job ✓ Palace of Justice Siege ✓ Prison Break and Manhunt ✓ Escobar’s Rooftop Death And much more! As Escobar gained wealth and prestige off of the cocaine trade, he became a kind of populist Robin Hood to the masses. He often used his money for philanthropist purposes such as building parks and soccer stadiums and even helping to pave highways. At first the government was willing to turn a blind eye to his business practices, but once Escobar gained a seat as an official alternate representative in the Colombian Congress everything changed. And by 1993 he was on the run, not just from the Colombian government but also from the CIA, rival drug cartels, paramilitary groups, and the ever-infamous vigilante death squad Los Pepes. Cornered and with nowhere left to run, the man who used to be known to raise the roof would spend his last few moments of life bleeding to death on a rooftop. This is the story of Pablo Escobar.

Mr. Rochester: British Bad Boy - Classics (Jane Eyre) Made Smutty
Marian Tee - 2017
They’re just too cocky and shallow for my taste, and I despise the way they act like being wickedly gorgeous and sexy makes them God’s gift to women. Yeah right. That may work on others but not me. I’m too smart for that. But then I start working for Mr. Rochester, and everything changes. I’ve never met someone more horribly rude and self-centered, and even worse is the way he’s so damn moody. Just being in his presence makes me feel dizzy. One moment he’s viciously cruel, another moment he’s exquisitely charming. One moment he seems invincible and out of my league, another moment he’s broodingly vulnerable and mysteriously tormented. But the worst is when we’re alone – when he gazes at me like he wants to eat me, it makes me feel so shamefully wet. I hate it. I hate HIM, Mr. Rochester, and if he thinks I’m going to let him get away with acting like my lord and master just because he’s my boss and I find him a little bit too sexy for my own good--- You don’t own me, Mr. Rochester, I hiss at him. But the words only make him smirk, and he whispers into my ear, ‘Not yet’.
