The Floating Outfit 19: The Wildcats (A Floating Outfit Western)
J.T. Edson - 2018
Independently wealthy, he dressed elaborately, using the fancy clothes to set off his handsome and virile features. But Mark was more than just a Beau Brummell of the West. He could handle a rifle, or his matched guns, with more than ordinary skill. And he could handle women, too—as he proved when he met up with such charming ladies as Madame Bulldog, Calamity Jane, Poker Alice and Madame Moustache ... J.T. Edson was a former British Army dog-handler who wrote more than 130 Western novels, accounting for some 27 million sales in paperback. Edson’s works - produced on a word processor in an Edwardian semi at Melton Mowbray - contain clear, crisp action in the traditions of B-movies and Western television series. What they lack in psychological depth is made up for by at least twelve good fights per volume. Each portrays a vivid, idealized “West That Never Was”, at a pace that rarely slackens.

Front Range Cowboys
Evie Nichole - 2017
FIVE full-length books. Guaranteed NO CLIFFHANGERS. Cowboy’s Last Down Football is the only thing I’ve ever cared about. Then I twisted my knee. My career is over. There’s no place to go but home. Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. My mama raised five of them. But I’m no good at ranching and I’m no good at business. I’m no good for anything. Then Maggie smiled at me. She gave me a job. She gave me a purpose. My life is a mess and Maggie is holding the broom and the dustpan. I love her more than football. I love her more than life. Her hands soothe the demons away. Beneath her touch I am alive. When I take her hand I know there’s going to be a tomorrow. Even broken down cowboys get one more chance. Stuck Up Cowboy The man in the mirror drips blood and diamonds on the remnants of a life that went wrong. I have a child to raise and a business to run and yet my life is in the bottom of a bottle. No one sees me. No one cares. Once I found solace on the back of a horse. Now I drink my cares away. Then Aria came back into my life. She knew me before. She knew me better than I knew myself. Sometimes an old bronc needs a place to heal. He needs a soft touch. Aria awakens me. The bottle has no pull anymore. In the saddle I find my redemption and in her arms I find my home. Scuffed Cowboy Boots I have everything. She has nothing. I see her everyday. She works. She begs others for handouts. Still her pride is formidable. I admire her. She is everything I am not. Her strength gives me the courage to fight. I want her. I crave her. Still she cannot be bought. Then they take her. They want to crush her, to use her, to take her life and her hope. But then I realize. I would move mountains for this woman. I would change my life. I would give all that I have to make things right. If only it’s not too late. Cowboy Falls My body is broken. I think there’s a scar on my back the shape of a horseshoe. Eight seconds can be the longest moments of your life when they’re spent on the back of a raging bronco. The horse wanted me dead. I lived. At least I think I lived. Some days it’s hard to tell who won and who lost. I’m broken inside. Then I met her. She is everything I am not. She is strong. I am weak and getting weaker. She expects more. I want to give it to her. But the bottom of a bottle is almost too much to resist when the pain is so bad I feel as though I am underneath that horse again. How many times can I fail before she will walk away? How many times will she forgive me? What will happen when she stops? Cowboy Lies When life is a lie and death is a lie, what happens in between? Sometimes I wonder when it will all stop. In a world of lies she is the only truth. I’ve known her all my life. When she was just a girl I held her hand and watched her cry. Back then I was helpless. Back then I could do nothing to make things right. So many things have gone wrong. So many times people have let her down and taken advantage of her. Not anymore. I’m done watching her cry. I’m done letting others walk all over her. She is mine.
The Banditti of the Plains: Or The Cattlemen's Invasion of Wyoming in 1892
Asa Shinn Mercer - 1896
It does not mince words … [and] is a timely contribution to the history of the West. That it recites the facts of a deep and damning crime detracts not the least from its value." - Denver Daily News
The Banditti of the Plains, first published in 1894 is an eyewitness exposé of Wyoming's Johnson County range war of the early 1890s. The conflict between cattlemen and small homesteaders, began when cattle companies ruthlessly persecuted supposed cattle-rustlers in Wyoming. As tensions mounted between the large ranchers and the smaller settlers, the cattlemen hired armed gunmen to invade Johnson County and destroy the competition for the limited supply of forage and water. As the fighting spread, the homesteaders and smaller ranchers, as well as the state lawmen, formed a posse of 200 men to oppose them. The fighting ended when the U.S. Cavalry, on the orders of President Benjamin Harrison, relieved the two opposing forces took the cattlemen and hired guns into protective custody. Subsequent legal (and illegal) maneuvering permitted the invaders to go unpunished, but the cattlemen never again resorted to violence in their effort to control Wyoming's rangeland. Asa Shinn Mercer (June 6, 1839 – August 10, 1917) was the first president of the Territorial University of Washington and a member of the Washington State Senate. He is remembered primarily for his role in three milestones of the old American West: the founding of the University of Washington, the Mercer Girls, and the Johnson County War. Mercer became well known throughout the West as a publisher, and eventually found his way to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he published the Northwestern Livestock Journal, a public relations vehicle for the moneyed cattle interests. As Mercer came to see the clearly underhanded treatment of individual ranchers by the cartels, he began to write more scathing accounts of the events that were unfolding on the open range. His account is told in his book The Banditti of the Plains (1894), which was suppressed in its day, and is still difficult to find in public libraries in some parts of the Western U.S. Following the events of the Johnson County War, which included destruction of his newspaper office by arson, Mercer settled into the quiet life of a successful rancher in Hyattville, Wyoming, where he died in 1917.

My Bloody Efforts: Life as a Rating in the Modern Royal Navy
Stephen Bridgman - 2012
Daysearlier, while traversing the Straits of Sicily the crew had discovered a crack in one ofthe nuclear reactor pipes, requiring the immediate shutting down of the reactor toprevent a potential reactor accident, an operation never before conducted on a Britishsubmarine at sea.Th e previous six days had been a difficult time for the crew of the submarine. Initialindications of a nuclear reactor defect had quickly escalated into a full scale potential nuclearreactor accident at sea, requiring decisive action by the crew to make the reactor safe, toidentify the defect and attempt to repair the reactor, and then to surface the submarine andto sail her safely back to the nearest safe harbor using emergency propulsion machinerydesigned for very limited use. The resulting lack of electrical power resulted in the crewhaving to sacrifice lighting, air-conditioning, bathing facilities and even hot food until theirreturn to harbor, and to suffer in the excessively hot interior of the boat. Throughout, there remained the fear of exposure to deadly radiation and the uncertainty that the reactormight still be one step away from a major accident. For one man onboard, this episode formed the culmination of a 25 year navalengineering career almost fated for this moment. Charge Chief Stephen Bridgman, the senior nuclear propulsion technician, had needed all of his engineering knowledgeand experience in the identification and eventual repair of the submarine reactor, subsequently being awarded an MBE together with a colleague for his services to navalengineering for his actions. This book provides an insight into a remarkable naval career starting as a 16 year oldStoker on the final proper British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in 1977, throughthe Falklands War, being selected for naval technician training and submarine service, submarine training, submarine patrols in the supposed post cold-war period, theKosovo conflict, progression through the ranks, submarine refi t and refueling throughto the nuclear reactor accident onboard HMS Tireless. While there are countless accounts of naval life during wartime, this book tells theunique story of life as a British naval rating in the modern era, starting from the lowestlevel at a time of decline for the Royal Navy in the late 1970s, and paralleling the majorpolitical and military events of the 1980s and 1990s.
