The Poison Tree: A True Story of Family Terror

Alan Prendergast - 1986
One cold November night, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, fifteen-year-old Richard Jahnke Jr., ROTC leader and former Boy Scout, waited for his parents to return from celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the night they met. When his father got out of the car, the boy blasted him through the heart with a twelve-gauge pump-action shotgun. Richard’s seventeen-year-old sister, Deborah, was sitting on the living room couch with a high-powered rifle—just in case her brother missed.   Hours later the Jahnke kids were behind bars. Days later they made headlines. So did the truth about the house of horrors on Cowpoke Road.   Was it cold-blooded murder? Or self-defense?   Richard Jahnke Sr., special agent for the IRS, gun collector, and avid reader of Soldier of Fortune, had been subjecting his wife, Maria, and both children to harrowing abuse—physical, psychological, and sexual—for years. Deborah and her brother conspired to finally put a stop to it themselves. But their fate was in the hands of a prejudiced and inept judicial system, and only public outcry could save them.   Written with the full and revealing cooperation of the Jahnkes, this finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime is “the ultimate family nightmare, played out in the heartland of America. . . . From the night of the murder through both trials, convictions and both youngsters’ eventual release . . . it’s gripping reading” (Chicago Tribune).

One Last Kiss: The Chilling True Story of a Cheating Husband Who Murdered His Wife and Children

Michael W. Cuneo - 2012
Unfortunately, the ministry he worked for had a no-divorce policy. So he made other plans. On May 5, 2009, Illinois police received a call from Coleman, who claimed he was unable to contact his family. When police investigated, they found Coleman’s wife and two sons strangled in bed. Across the walls, spraypainted in red, were various obscenities—the word punished among them.  Did this respected church man murder his family to be with his lover? Or was something—or someone—else more sinister afoot? Police would eventually uncover two threatening letters sent to the Coleman home, and key testimony from Chris’s mistress only complicated the criminal evidence. Coleman’s trial raged on—along with a statewide debate over the death penalty—and questions about his role in the murders remained unanswered. His fate still hangs in the balance…

Crime of the Century: The Lindbergh Kidnapping Hoax

Gregory Ahlgren - 1993
Seventy-two days later, the body was found in the woods next to a roadway, a short distance from Lindbergh's house, near Hopewell, New Jersey. In 1927, Lindbergh was the first to fly solo across the Atlantic in his Spirit of St. Loius. By 1932, he was perhaps the most famous man alive. A great American hero, he was allowed to be the chief architect of the investigation into his son's kidnapping. He demanded that the body be cremated without an autopsy. This book traces the 2 and a half year investigation by the New Jersey State Police, headed by Colonel H Norman Schwarzkopf, and which led to the arrest, trial, conviction and execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. It challenges the effectiveness of the investigation, and the evidence advanced by the prosecution, which convicted Hauptmann.

Murderers' Row: A Collection of Shocking True Crime Stories

M. William Phelps - 2016
William Phelps, someone tries to pin a gruesome murder on a horse, infamous serial killer Son of Sam shows us his true evil nature in a series of lost letters this psychopath never wanted you to see, and Sesame Streets Big Bird comes home to find a dead woman on his estate. These shocking stories join several others that only a master storyteller like Phelps can bring to life for readers. The six stories in this collection have been published in various print and digital places but have never been brought together in one terrifying, mysterious read. Phelps updates each case. One story involves a young man who believes he's figured out the perfect way to commit a murder after binge-watching "Forensic Files." In this opening tale, a Massachusetts man is stalked by a hired killer because of the information he holds in the case of insurance scam gone bad, resulting in savage murder. Next up is the story of a restaurant owner and her husband, enjoying a calm, peaceful life in the Berkshires, with all the charm and tranquility New England has to offer, until a bloody trail inside a barn leads to a gruesome discovery and a familys deepest, darkest secrets are exposed. Phelps also takes readers behind the scenes of his hit Investigation Discovery series "Dark Minds," revealing his investigative secrets with an intimate look at those serialkiller cold cases that still haunt Phelps today. Finally, as another bonus, Phelps, who author Vincent Bugliosi called one of Americas best true crime journalists, heads out to meet renowned forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee in a narrative interview that reveals Lees ingenious and humorous take on life, his crime-scene philosophy, and the ways in which he deals with the brutality of the work he does.

Sons of the Prophet

Stephen Karam - 2012
But something more “global” appears to be at work, and in any case he is distracted from his dreary rounds of diagnosis-seeking when a more urgent tragedy befalls the family. Joseph’s father, a former steelworker, was driving home from his new maintenance job when he swerved to avoid a deer and crashed his car, landing in the hospital. A week later he died of a heart attack. The deer, it turns out, was a stuffed decoy placed there by a high school student as a prank. This enrages Joseph’s older and ailing uncle, Bill (Yusef Bulos), who is even more disgusted when it is learned that the culprit is the star of the local football team, Vin (Jonathan Louis Dent), a town hero who is given a dispensation by a judge to serve his sentence in juvenile detention after the football season has concluded. Joseph and his younger brother, Charles (Chris Perfetti) — who are both gay — are more sympathetic to Vin, an African-American boy who has grown up in a foster home, and whose chance at a professional career may be jeopardized.Gloria (Joanna Gleason), Joseph’s new boss and a book packaging expert, knows a little about career jeopardy herself. She was run out of the publishing business — and Manhattan — when she sold a memoir by a Holocaust survivor that turned out to be fictionalized. (Gloria’s story and Vin’s are inspired by actual events.)Now she latches on to the discovery that Joseph’s family, of Lebanese extraction, is distantly related to Kahlil Gibran, author of the perennial best-selling spiritual book “The Prophet.” In her hilariously addled mind — complaining about her fall from grace, she defensively remarks, “I wasn’t at the Holocaust” — she decides that a memoir by Joseph about his family’s journey will be her ticket back to the big time.Mr. Karam’s play, which runs a little less than two hours and is performed in one seamless act , may sound top-heavy with plot and character. (Did I mention that Gloria’s emotional frailty also stems from the suicide of her husband?) Some of the relationships would benefit from being fleshed out in greater detail: the integration of Gloria into the lives of Joseph and his family, for example. The play’s climax shoehorns all the elements of the story into a farcical scene that seems a little forced, funny though it is.But one of Mr. Karam’s themes is the indiscriminate nature of misfortune — one calamity does not immunize you from the next, worse one — so the multiplication of disasters roiling the characters’ lives is to the point. And he writes with such precision that even the more peripheral characters emerge as sharply drawn, multifaceted individuals.

Greentown: Murder and Mystery in Greenwich, America's Wealthiest Community

Timothy Dumas - 1998
Soon after Martha's body was discovered, attention focused on members of the Skakel family, who lived across the street from the Moxleys. Ethel Skakel and Robert Kennedy had married in Greenwich, and the two families were close. Thomas Skakel, Ethel's nephew, was the last known person to see Martha alive. The murder weapon, a ladies' golf club, came from the Skakel household. When the Greenwich police tried to pursue its investigation, however, the community closed in upon itself. Lawyers were summoned, walls went up, information was suppressed, and no one was charged. And yet, continuing to haunt Greenwich, the case refused to go away--until, twenty-three years later, following the publication of this book, a grand jury was convened, and two years after that a man--Thomas's brother Michael--was finally indicted for the crime. This revised edition now brings the Martha Moxley murder case to a close. Updated to include the indictment, trial, and conviction of the murderer, Greentown offers the suspenseful and chilling account of a terrible crime. More than that, while relating a tale of seductive power, it uses the murder to tell the heartrending story of a family and a community responding to the unthinkable.
