It was pretty obvious that people found something on the internet for free and put it on Amazon to sell, but for only 99 cents I figured there wasn't much to lose so I bought one. Turned out to be totally useless. There was no table of contents and there were two or three blank pages between each recipe. That meant a lot of clicking on the Kindle just to see what's there. I didn't bother trying to click through all the recipes - I was afraid I'd wear out my little clicker. Instead, I went to google and immediately found what people were downloading, a .pdf file with 470 recipes in alphabetical order. Hence "Artichoke Chicken and Olives" was next to "Artichoke and Cheese Dip" but if you want to browse all the chicken recipes you're out of luck. So I converted this .pdf file to something I could work with and proceeded to reorganize the recipes into categories and build a table of contents. Now if you've got a chicken sitting in your fridge screaming at you to do something before it gets too old you can go to the "Chicken and Turkey" section of the table of contents and scan through the titles or click on the first one and start glancing at the recipes until you find something that strikes your fancy. I also standardized the recipe formats and abbreviations and included a little information about converting the U.S. measurements for those of you that have advanced on to the metric system and now only use teaspoons for stirring your tea. Some of these recipes mention brand name products. If those products aren't available where you are you're just going to have to call me bad names and either wing it or try another recipe. There are plenty of recipes that only call for natural and/or fresh ingredients though. Revised: 30 August 2011

The steam creates pressure from inside the hard shell casing and before you know it, POP! - the kernel is turned inside out and is ready to be consumed. As long as you can generate heat and have some kernels on hand, you can make popcorn!Enough of the history, what about the recipes? I've gathered 30 of the finest popcorn recipes from around the world for your snacking pleasure, and have tried to keep them free from artificial sweeteners, preservatives or other nasty additives wherever possible. I've specified 9 cups of popped corn for most recipes, as that gives 3 generous cups per serving - you can have as many or as few servings as you fancy, but keep an eye on the calories! And the book itself, rather like its controversial author, represents something new in cookery books. Ramsay has, of course, made a reputation for himself not just for his considerable abilities as a chef, but as a short tempered martinet, tearing into his luckless students with expletive-filled rage. But that spleen is crucial to the man's philosophy (born out of a desire for perfection), and it is conveyed between the delicious-looking recipes presented here (cooking, as Ramsay forcibly reminds us, can't be made up as you go along -- you've got to work, work, work). The recipes themselves look absolutely amazing, such as pan-roasted fillet of John Dory with Cromer Crab, crushed new potatoes and a basil vinaigrette (and it should be noted that Quentin Bacon's beautiful photographs are a massive asset to the book, doing full justice to the visual appeal of the food). In deserts, too, the aspirational appeal here is impressive -- perhaps most of us would not be able to turn out (without trial and error) a raspberry, lemon and basil millefeuille with milk ice cream that looks quite as breathtaking as it does here, but Ramsay's book is calculated to inspire us. Perhaps reading Chef is the perfect way to help us try to cook like Gordon Ramsay; for most of us, a spell in his restaurant kitchen would mean blood on the floor -- here we can learn from his cookery genius without having to put up with the tirades.
