Things to Do When You're Goth in the Country And Other Stories

Chavisa Woods - 2017
Not stories of triumph over adversity, but something completely other. Described in language that is brilliantly sardonic, Woods's characters return repeatedly to places where they don't belong—often the places where they were born. In "Zombie," a coming-of-age story like no other, two young girls find friendship with a mysterious woman in the local cemetery. "Take the Way Home That Leads Back to Sullivan Street" describes a lesbian couple trying to repair their relationship by dropping acid at a Mensa party. In "A New Mohawk," a man in romantic pursuit of a female political activist becomes inadvertently much more familiar with the Palestine/Israel conflict than anyone would have thought possible. And in the title story, Woods brings us into the mind of a queer goth teenager who faces ostracism from her small-town evangelical church. In the background are the endless American wars and occupations and too many early deaths of friends and family. This is fiction that is fresh and of the moment, even as it is timeless.

Mittens

Phoenix Baker - 2013
This is the story of how we became lovers, after a tipsy conversation in which I revealed a little too much about my bedroom habits - but that's not the interesting part.I should tell you that Samantha is the only real, actual, no-kidding-around genius that I've ever known. She's an electronics engineer by day, mad tinkerer and occasional inventor by night - a bespectacled, crazy-haired, absent-minded scatterbrain whose house smells of solder and stray voltage. She is beautiful, intimidatingly intelligent, unnervingly strong, and perhaps more than a little eccentric. She is in love with me, and wants to do whatever will make me happy.I know, right? Lucky Nina, smug and grinning. But wait - it gets better. And a good bit weirder, too. What makes me happy is physical and psychological torture. I love to be scared, bared, smitten, bitten, stripped, whipped, deprived, depraved and degraded - but what I love most of all is to be frightened. I mean serious, bone-deep, fight-or-flight terrified. My biggest erogenous zones are my adrenal glands, and Sam sure as hell knows how to make them squirt. So, what happens to poor, frightened little Nina, when she has a full-time mad scientist constantly figuring out wonderfully twisted and inventive punishments?Mad things. Scary things. Things I wouldn't have thought of in a thousand years. Things that would never have crossed the minds of anyone but Sam.Things that are wickedly, deliciously cruel.Things that make me ecstatic just to be alive.Things involving mittens.

Alice Chipkin - 2017
And from Alice’s perspective as a primary support person in particular, there was almost nothing at all. In a world that tells us to 'keep calm and carry on' the authors are offering a narrative that is vulnerable, honest and uncertain. They hope to add new ways to talk about, visualise and relate to these complex emotions.

The Odyssey: A Graphic Novel

Gareth Hinds - 2010
Instead, he offends the sea god, Poseidon, who dooms him to years of shipwreck and wandering. Battling man-eating monsters, violent storms, and the supernatural seductions of sirens and sorceresses, Odysseus will need all his strength and cunning—and a little help from Mount Olympus—to make his way home and seize his kingdom from the schemers who seek to wed his queen and usurp his throne. Award-winning graphic artist Gareth Hinds masterfully reinterprets a story of heroism, adventure, and high action that has been told and retold for more than 2,500 years—though never quite like this.

Dancer

Colum McCann - 2003
Spanning four decades and many worlds, from the horrors of the Second World War to the wild abandon of New York in the eighties, Dancer is peopled by a large cast of characters, obscure and famous: doormen and shoemakers, nurses and translators, Margot Fonteyn, Eric Bruhn and John Lennon. And at the heart of the spectacle stands the artist himself, willful, lustful, and driven by a never-to-be-met need for perfection.

Bless her heart. And her silk pocket squares.Warning: Contains obscene pub trivia team names, paint guns, a Southern belle with an exquisite grasp of battlefield tactics, and one dapper dyke who's misjudged her.

Naamah's Kiss

Jacqueline Carey - 2009

Or perhaps oceans. Beyond Terre d'Ange, where she finds her father, in the far reaches of distant Ch'in, Moirin's skills will be a true gift when facing the vengeful plans of an ambitious mage, a noble warrior-princess desperate to save her father's throne, and the spirit of a celestial dragon.

Griffin and Sabine

Nick Bantock - 1991
His logical, methodical world was suddenly turned upside down by a strangely exotic woman living on a tropical island thousands of miles away. Who is Sabine? How can she "see" what Griffin is painting when they have never met? Is she a long-lost twin? A clairvoyant? Or a malevolent angel? Are we witnessing the flowering of a magical relationship or a descent into madness? This stunning visual novel unfolds in a series of postcards and letters, all brilliantly illustrated with whimsical designs, bizarre creatures, and darkly imagined landscapes. Inside the book, Griffin and Sabine's letters are to be found nestling in their envelopes, permitting the reader to examine the intimate correspondence of these inexplicably linked strangers. This truly innovative novel combines a strangely fascinating story with lush artwork in an altogether original format.

Books of Adam: The Blunder Years

Adam Ellis - 2013

Based on the blog of the same name, Book of Adam details Adam's hilarious trials and tribulations in his attempt to become a functioning member of society. From his arrest after shoplifting a bottle of chocolate milk to a misguided attempt to make friends that lands him in a shack with a hippie couple who have just skinned a rabbit and are trying to entice him into a three-some, Adam is an amicable guy who can't seem to keep himself out of trouble. Paired with his signature black and white illustrations, Adam's stories weave together an uproariously funny and ultimately charming narrative about a young man trying to find his place in the world.

Harrington Street

Jerry Garcia - 1995
Like things to do with my relatives, my family, the block I grew up on, the things that scared me (animals), the discovery of fire, you know things like that. I've written to age 10/ I talk to myself, sort of remember things about my family, things they told me, things I think I heard. Then I wonder how I picked up that information, as it seems so familiar. But then it is twisted through my own imagination, which is warped. I write the text out longhand, but my drawings, which illustrate my text, I do on computer. I'm taking it totally freely, it's really FUN! I'm pleased with what I am doing. The look is so unique-- it doesn't look like anything else I have ever seen!" -- Jerry Garcia (author)
