He revels in the hard-earned power and control he’s acquired. As the saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold,” which Starks discovers when gut-wrenching betrayal by his wife sends him over the edge and into a maximum security prison. There, Starks is a new “fish,” stripped of nearly everything he’s always relied on. In that place, where inmates and guards have their own rules and codes of conduct, Starks is forced to face the darker side of life, and his own darker side, especially when the betrayals, both inside and outside the prison, don’t stop. He must choose which path to follow when the line between right and wrong becomes blurred: one that leads to getting out of the physical and emotional hellhole he finds himself in or one that keeps him alive. Certain that life has gotten as bad as it can get, Starks contrives a way to rise to the top of the inmate hierarchy. But his assumption is wrong. Amid stunning revelations, betrayals, and violence, Starks faces one challenge after another, until a life-altering event forces him into the most brutal confrontation of all: the truth about himself.

Red Rowan: Book 1: Forester's son

Helen Gosney - 2014
In most ways, he’s the same as any other forester: tall, strong and well built, red-haired like his northern kin, and like them considered small by other foresters but not by anyone else. He has all the proverbial politeness of his kin and all of their stubbornness as well. He differs from them in only two things: he is a Whisperer of the sort not seen for a very long time, and he has come to be regarded as a hero and a legend in his own lifetime … much to his own amazement, disbelief and horror. This is the story of how he did it. Book One is the story of a young Rowan who leaves the forests as few of his kind ever do, to become a Guardsman in the neighbouring province of Wirran. The Wirran Guard are justly proud of their distinguished reputation and find themselves shocked to find a young Siannen is as good as any of them and better than most when he takes them on at their own game. Book Two finds Rowan’s life has changed a lot, and not for the better. He has faced unimaginable loss, trauma and betrayal and decides to find and confront the Gods themselves, simply to tell them what he thinks about the way they’re running things. He might mention some improvements that they could make while he’s at it. His meeting with those he finds in Plausant Bron will change him and the world of Yaarl forever. Book Three sees Rowan more at peace with himself at last, though at times he still struggles with the losses and traumas of his past. At the urging of an old friend he will finally return to his old garrison to face and accept the adulation and honours that he turned his back on. While he’s there, he will show a new generation of swordsmen that the Champion is not to be trifled with, no matter how old and decrepit he may appear to be.

Meister Eckhart's Book of the Heart: Meditations for the Restless Soul

Jon M. Sweeney - 2017
In the 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church rehabilitated him and the late Pope John Paul II spoke of his work with fondness. However, what makes him of particular interest is the fact that he has influenced a wide range of spiritual teachers and mystics both inside and outside the Christian tradition. Erich Fromm, Eckhart Tolle, Richard Rohr, D. T. Suzuki, and Rudolf Steiner have all credited Eckhart as being an important influence on their thought. In addition, his work has influenced the development of 20th century American Buddhism and the Theosophical tradition.Eckhart wrote at a time--much like our own--when society appeared to be coming apart at the seams. In the midst of all that chaos and uncertainty, he captured the many forms and stages of the love of God, the mystic path, and the journey of transformation--in language so startling that he, too, was often accused of heresy. Now, seven centuries later, this fresh, stunning rendering of his work translates the essence of one of Christianity's greatest poetic and spiritual voices. Here is a book that conveys the heart of Eckhart's teaching on what it means to love God and embark on an authentic spiritual journey--a journey that is characterized by mystery, paradox, and an embrace of the unknown.

Broken Summers

Henry Rollins - 2004
In what was widely considered a witch hunt, three older boys were convicted of the killings. Ten years later, Henry Rollins used his considerable cultural chops to raise money for their defense fund and for DNA testing, which could help clear them. His vehicle? The acclaimed CD “Rise Above” and a world tour. Broken Summers details the rehearsing of Black Flag songs he hadn’t played in years, dealing with an arrogant manager or two, a diverse group of musicians, recording the CD, and the arduous trek from Tucson to Tokyo that included grilling by heartland shock jocks unsympathetic to his cause. The book covers 14 months of desperate lows and dramatic highs, all rendered in Rollins’s trademark combative style. Included are black-and-white photos of the rehearsals, recording sessions, and tour.

The Wonkey-Donky: Hee-Haww!

M. Travisano - 2018
Imagine, her in a library, with a bunch of toddlers, and pre-schoolers and their parents, at story time. "I was walking, down the road, and I saw . . . A donkey, Hee Haaw! And he only had three-legs! He was a wonky-donkey." Every Grandparent should have this book to read to the grandkids. It would make a fantastic Christmas gift.

Nervous People and Other Satires

Mikhail Zoshchenko - 1963
Typical targets of Zoshchenko's satire are the Soviet bureaucracy, crowded conditions in communal apartments, marital infidelities and the rapid turnover in marriage partners, and "the petty-bourgeois mode of life, with its adulterous episodes, lying, and similar nonsense." His devices are farcical complications, satiric understatement, humorous anachronisms, and an ironic contrast between high-flown sentiments and the down-to-earth reality of mercenary instincts.Zoshchenko's sharp and original satire offers a marvelous window on Russian life in the 20s and 30s.
