Betsy the Vampire Queen

MaryJanice Davidson - 2005
First I lose my job. Then, I'm in a car accident. Next, I'm waking up dressed in clothes I wouldn't be caught dead in (pink polyester and cheap shoes courtesy of my evil stepmother). But guess what? I am dead and what really bites is that I can't seem to stay dead. Every night, I wake up with a horrible craving. Not chocolate—mom would approve of that. No, all of a sudden my snack choice is blood, and I'm not taking well to a liquid diet.Yep, that's me: Betsy Taylor, a single, unemployed Minneapolis secretary. Taller at six feet than most of the men I meet. Pretty, but so dull my cat runs away three times a month. And now: a vampire. No sooner am I undead, than my stepmonster steals my shoes. My hellishly expensive, to-die-for shoes. What's worse, my new friends have the ridiculous idea that I'm their prophesied vampire queen. I must help them overthrow the baddest vampire lord they've seen in five centuries. Personally, I don't care—until they use a powerful temptation: designer shoes. How can I resist? No more than I can resist Eric Sinclair, the studly but infuriating bloodsucker I call "sin in a suit."Vampire Queen or not, the bills keep coming. And that means getting a job... in the shoe department at Macy's. So man shoes, so little time! Especially when my friends keep after me to do something about all the vampires getting killed in St. Paul. Then my life takes an interesting turn when I find out that I have a long-lost sister who just happens to be the devil's own daughter—destined to rule the world. By Christmastime, all is not merry and bright.Like I said, it's been a helluva year...Includes Undead and Unwed, Undead and Unemployed, Undead and Unappreciated and Undead and Unreturnable.

Brookwater's Curse Volume 1

Steven Van Patten - 2005
His long, tumultuous life takes a complicated turn when he is forced to travel to modern-day Senegal to rescue a child from a vengeful werewolf prince. It is here that Christian uncovers a plot that would throw the entire vampire nation into a civil war. To stop this, Christian must betray his best friend and mentor, an influential Italian vampire who nurtured him during his vampiric infancy. Christian is a member of a nocturnal law enforcement community that safeguards the secrets of the creatures of the night. This involves the killing of werewolves and other deranged monsters; something Christian excels at. But his fraternization with humans and his incessant need to kill racists vexes his superiors, who threaten to execute him if he doesn’t curtail his ‘racial impulses’. Christian also suffers from a rare condition that makes intercourse with human females especially dangerous. Christian’s other mentor is a four hundred year old vampire samurai lord who teaches him the arts of war and sacrifice, and has a knack for appearing whenever things become desperate. Of course, the warrior’s code can’t replace the desire for love, as Christian discovers when he becomes enamored with a human female in the 1940s. Despite Christian’s affliction, the two lovers raise a child together and for a while, our vampire gets a taste of true happiness. Some years later, his family life ends tragically as Christian loses his great love and becomes estranged from his teenaged son. Heartbroken, Christian embarks on a series of illuminating, yet sinful adventures as he migrates to a new home: Harlem, New York.

Murphy's Lore: Redemption Road

Patrick Thomas - 2005
For the troubled, it is a place to find those who will help them in beating back the darkness. For those lucky enough to find it, their lives will never again be the same. The name of the place is Bulfinche's Pub. These are their stories. This is Murphy's Lore. After centuries of imprisonment and torture, the Norse trickster Loki is freed for a day in payment for a good deed done years past. The god of deception promises to return but manages to find a way to turn that day into weeks. The only catch is he has to bring bartender John Murphy along for the ride, literally. While visiting distant worlds they are drawn into a war, fighting for those who cannot defend themselves. They are joined by goblins, trolls and a fugitive thunderer. In the midst of the struggle, Loki arrives at a crossroad. One way lies personal freedom, but at a terrible cost to the people he is trying to save. The other path may well destroy him, but could stop Ragnarok. Can someone considered evil truly change? Will Loki continue on the path to destruction or take his first steps on REDEMPTION ROAD. PARTICIPANTS OF THE KARMA WAR speak out on REDEMPTION ROAD: "A dazzling display of story telling skill. If this book isn't on your bookshelves, your personal library is incomplete." -Murphy's Mom "A great book. Delicious as an appetizer or entree. Even better with a little salt."-Pace, Primitive Troll "War is hell. I should know. I've fought in a hundred campaigns on dozens of worlds. So in a choice between war and Murphy's book, I recommend the book. However I don't recommend using it as a weapon unless you're fighting tiny insects." -Tock, Goblin Commander "I can't guarantee this book will protect you against lightning strikes, but I can honestly said that I've never known anyone who owned this book that was struck by a thunderbolt. And I've seen plenty of people struck by lightning, usually right after they tick me off." -Thunder Jack, The god formerly known as Zeus Praise for the Murphy's Lore series: "HUMOR, OUTRAGEOUS ADVENTURES, & SOME CLEVER PLOT TWISTS." -Don D'Ammassa, SCIENCE FICTION CHRONICLE "SLICK... Caught Creatures

Daniel M. Davis - 2005
Yes, that's probably the best way to describe it. It is full of monsters (mostly those that are caught), a Haiku for each one, and well, lots and lots of full color monster art. 48 pages, in fact. * Is it for kids? Sure! * Is it SCARY? Nope, not a bit. * Is it for adults? You bet! * Is it educational? There are lots of example Haikus in the book. * Is it for fans of monsters or Halloween? Huzzah! * Who wrote it? Daniel M. Davis. (The idea was from his wife.) "I created this book for my son Kaid" said Daniel Davis, the artist and illustrator of Caught Creatures. "He's inherited my love of monsters and the desire to hunt them down and capture them for their monster gold." "Though I wanted to make it for a kid, Caught Creatures isn't strictly a kid's book. It's full of references to old americana; video games, chopper bikes, old guitars, and vintage lighting. Most kids won't get it as much as their parents will... it's a wink and a nod to Gen X." Daniel goes on to say that "Caught Creatures is influenced by the 1970's as well as the Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow Art movement; Tim Biskup, Dave Wasoon, Junko Mizno, Mark Ryden, Bob Dob, and tons of other talented folks." Vintage toys, old cartoons, and sugary cereal all have contributed to Davis' unique and fresh vision.
