Crime Novels: American Noir of the 1930s and 40s

Robert Polito - 1997
The eleven novels in The Library of America’s adventurous two-volume collection taps deep roots in the American literary imagination, exploring themes of crime, guilt, deception, obsessive passion, murder, and the disintegrating psyche. With visionary and often subversive force they create a dark and violent mythology out of the most commonplace elements of modern life.James M. Cain’s pioneering novel of murder and adultery along the California highway, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), shocked contemporaries with its laconic toughness and fierce sexuality.Horace McCoy’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1935) uses truncated rhythms and a unique narrative structure to turn its account of a Hollywood dance marathon into an unforgettable evocation of social chaos and personal desperation. In Thieves Like Us (1937), Edward Anderson vividly brings to life the dusty roads and back-country hideouts where a fugitive band of Oklahoma outlaws plays out its destiny. The Big Clock (1946), an ingenious novel of pursuit and evasion by the poet Kenneth Fearing, is set by contrast in the dense and neurotic inner world of a giant publishing corporation under the thumb of a warped and ultimately murderous chief executive.William Lindsay Gresham’s controversial Nightmare Alley (1946), a ferocious psychological portrait of a charismatic carnival hustler, creates an unforgettable atmosphere of duplicity, corruption, and self-destruction.I Married a Dead Man (1948), a tale of switched identity set in the anxious suburbs, is perhaps the most striking novel of Cornell Woolrich, who found in the techniques of the gothic thriller the means to express an overpowering sense of personal doom.Disturbing, poetic, anarchic, punctuated by terrifying bursts of rage and paranoia and powerfully evocative of the lost and desperate sidestreets of American life, these are underground classics now made widely and permanently available.

The Third Rumpole Omnibus

John Mortimer - 1997
Rumpole a la Carte, a delightful discourse on the British legal system, takes us from a restaurant battle over Rumpole?s mashed spuds to a confrontation with a detective-novelist on a ship. The zany yarns of Rumpole on Trial are ingenious: devil worshippers, Juvenile Court, a mysterious seductress searching for a barrister to defend her husband for a murder not yet committed, and courtroom strategies a little too lunatic force Rumpole to face the Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council. Rumpole and the Angel of Death offers a comic commentary on cruelty to animals, human rights, and the fallibility of the justice system. The Third Rumpole Omnibus promises insight and laughter from the barrister who?s "as much a detective as Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot" (The Boston Sunday Globe).

Bitter End

Rex Stout - 1997
"Bitter End" is the first story to receive the shorter novella-length treatment. These shorter cases are unjustly considered inferior to the novels by some critics (and even some fans), but they simply are, for the most part, faster reads of adventures with well-developed plots and characters that compare very favorably with the full length novels, though if they are roughly one third in length. "Bitter End," the first novella length adventure featuring Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, appeared in the November 1940 issue of "The American Magazine" and marked the beginning of a long relationship between Rex Stout and that publication that lasted uninterrupted for 15 years. The story, which is dark and complex, explores the family, business and personal relationships of the owners and employees of a specialty food manufacturer. Wolfe has a personal encounter with one of their products that has been poisoned and feels compelled to investigate. After its first appearance in The American Magazine, the novella was published in book form in a collection titled "Corsage: A Bouquet of Rex Stout and Nero Wolfe" first and later in the book titled "Death Times Three." This eBook includes, as a bonus, the short story "Out of the Line" that was published first in "All-Story Cavalier Weekly" and is not available anywhere else in electronic format.

The Baker Street File

Michael Cox - 1997
What Michael Cox has done with "The Baker Street File," was to take seemingly trite details about these characters from each of Doyles' stories and listed them in sections. Some examples of these chapter lists include information on Holmes & Watsons' appearance, mannerisms, skills, comments on each other, personal philosophies, opinions on women, and even a detailed description of how Holmes' room should appear (especially if he's in one of his black moods). If you've had the privilege to see any of the Granada television series with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke as Watson, then you'll appreciate, as I do, their obsessive attention to detail and who frequently used this manual for their characterizations. I'm especially interested in how actors prepare for their roles so I'm highly recommending this text for those who study acting and for anyone else who sees the value of being this particular when bringing an authors' work to the screen.

No Turning Back

Three dark stains across his chest, and another bullet hole in his forehead.   Child psychologist Liz Havers made a mistake sixteen years ago, and she’s ready to face it. That means confronting Detective Hawthorne “Hawk” Hart, who’s come back to Woodside, Washington, after a case in LA went tragically wrong. His teenage son, Jesse, is finding it difficult to adjust, and stumbling across a dead man doesn’t help.   Bad things never used to happen in the small town of Woodside. Now no one is safe. And the more Hawk tries to untangle a terrifying web of greed and murder, the more desperate his adversary becomes to hide the truth, even if that means killing again and again . . .   With its new title and new cover, No Turning Back feels like a whole new book to me—one I hope you will enjoy as much as I do.   Nancy Bush

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3 (BBC Radio Presents)

Clive Merrison - 1997
Includes stellar dramatizations of four classic Sherlock Holmes adventures. Starting off this intriguing audiobook is The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, in which some spilled blood and a seemingly insignificant incident turn into something much more dangerous and life-threatening. Next is The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb--a neat story about a love triangle involving a haughty aristocrat, who elicits the best put-down ever uttered by Holmes' acerbic lips: "I understand that you have already managed several delicate cases of this sort, although I presume that they were hardly from the same class of society, " says the aristocrat, to which Holmes replies, "No, I am descending. My last client of this sort was a king." In The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet Dr. Watson remarks to Holmes, "Here is a madman coming along." But the terrified banker is no madman and we are straightaway whisked into the torturous affair of a valuable piece of jewelry, a lover, and a wronged son. The Adventure of the Copper Beeches is brilliant, threatening, utterly mysterious, with a beautiful governess, a sly employer, and a head of hair in a drawer.
