Plant Spirit Shamanism: Traditional Techniques for Healing the Soul

Howard G. Charing - 2006
Charing explore the use of one of the major allies of shamans for healing, seeing, dreaming, and empowerment--plant spirits. After observing great similarities in the use of plants among shamans throughout the world, they discovered the reason behind these similarities: Rather than dealing with the “medical properties” of the plants or specific healing techniques, shamans commune with the spirits of the plants themselves. From their years of in-depth shamanic work in the Amazon, Haiti, and Europe, including extensive field interviews with master shamans, Heaven and Charing present the core methods of plant shamanism used in healing rituals the world over: soul retrieval, spirit extraction, sin eating, and the Amazonian tradition of pusanga (love medicine). They explain the techniques shamans use to establish connections to plant spirits and provide practical exercises as well as a directory of traditional Amazonian and Caribbean healing plants and their common North American equivalents so readers can ex-plore the world of plant spirits and make allies of their own.

Magia Sexualis: Sex, Magic, and Liberation in Modern Western Esotericism

Hugh B. Urban - 2006
This book, the first history of western sexual magic as a modern spiritual tradition, places these practices in the context of the larger discourse surrounding sexuality in American and European society over the last 150 years to discover how sexual magic was transformed from a terrifying medieval nightmare of heresy and social subversion into a modern ideal of personal empowerment and social liberation. Focusing on a series of key figures including American spiritualist Paschal Beverly Randolph, Aleister Crowley, Julius Evola, Gerald Gardner, and Anton LaVey, Hugh Urban traces the emergence of sexual magic out of older western esoteric traditions including Gnosticism and Kabbalah, which were progressively fused with recently-discovered eastern traditions such as Hindu and Buddhist Tantra. His study gives remarkable new insight into sexuality in the modern era, specifically on issues such as the politics of birth control, the classification of sexual “deviance,” debates over homosexuality and feminism, and the role of sexuality in our own new world of post-modern spirituality, consumer capitalism, and the Internet.

Binding Words: Textual Amulets in the Middle Ages

Don C. Skemer - 2006
In Binding Words, Don C. Skemer provides the first book-length study of this once-common means of harnessing the magical power of words.Textual amulets were a unique source of empowerment, promising the believer safe passage through a precarious world by means of an ever-changing mix of scriptural quotations, divine names, common prayers, and liturgical formulas. Although theologians and canon lawyers frequently derided textual amulets as ignorant superstition, many literate clergy played a central role in producing and disseminating them. The texts were, in turn, embraced by a broad cross-section of Western Europe. Saints and parish priests, physicians and village healers, landowners and peasants alike believed in their efficacy.Skemer offers careful analysis of several dozen surviving textual amulets along with other contemporary medieval source materials. In the process, Binding Words enriches our understanding of popular religion and magic in everyday medieval life.

Liber Lilith: A Gnostic Grimoire

Donald Tyson - 2006
A lost Gnostic creation text, rediscovered by chance in a secondhand bookshop in Berlin, contains shocking revelations that turn the biblical story of Genesis on its head. It was not the God of the Old Testament who created Adam from the things of the earth, but Lilith, the Queen of Hell and Mistress of Demons, and it was Lilith who visited Eve in the form of a wise serpent to free her from her prison of ignorance by feeding her the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.Incorporated with the creation text is a complete Gnostic grimoire describing a potent system of sex magic by which Lilith may be summoned for erotic union. Sex with Lilith is said to grant the magician certain occult gifts, leading ultimately to complete spiritual liberation. The diary of the unfortunate German magician who rediscovered this lost Gnostic text and made experiments with the grimoire portion is appended as a caution to those who might regard the caresses of Lilith as no more than an amusing diversion. Inner Order Teachings of the Golden Dawn

Pat Zalewski - 2006
This includes the Golden Dawn Alchemical teachings, Secret Teachings of the Zelator Grade and the important Caduceus paper. These have either been gathering dust on some collector's shelves, or have been worked by those who have continued the Order's work. So secret were these documents, Israel Regardie was unaware of them and subsequently many of the modern Orders of the Hermetic Order of Golden Dawn who were dependent on his encyclopaedic 'Golden Dawn' for their teaching have left out much of this work. However, the papers contained in this book provide the much needed keys to understand the Golden Dawn system in its entirety. However, just as the Golden Dawn was not just intellectual information gathered under one heading but contained oral instruction to make the system come alive, so this material came with extensive traditions that make it useful to the student. For the first time, Golden Dawn authority Pat Zalewski, who was trained by the Inner Order adepts of the Golden Dawn, reveals the key to this material.

Heka: The Practices of Ancient Egyptian Ritual and Magic

David Rankine - 2006
Egypt has been described as the "mother of magicians." To appreciate the Egyptian view of magic, we need to accept that to the Egyptians magic was not considered strange or eccentric, but was a part of daily life, to which everyone resorted. Magic blended seamlessly with religion and medicine, being seen as part of a holistic worldview. In this volume these magical and religious practices are explored, from both a historical and practical perspective. The practices are explored from an ancient Egyptian worldview, taking into consideration that the Egyptian culture spread over a period of more than 3000 years. The Egyptians saw the universe as being made of four worlds - the everyday world we live in, the underworld, the sky and the heavens. Several excellent suggestions for studying and meditating on the cards are provided by the authors. This book is a balanced combination of both historical and new material presented by the Zalewskis that stands firmly rooted in Golden Dawn teachings and ritual practice. There are many interesting new innovations in this book. Fully illustrated with 78 all new tarot cards by Golden Dawn member and professional artist, Skip Dudchous.

The Satanic Bible

Caesar 999 - 2006
First of all this religion is Anti-Laveyian for the most part. Laveyian Satanism is more conservative politically supporting mercenary capitalism and absolute individualism over the good of the whole people. Evolving Satanism is more spiritual and represents more of a group spirit and a politically left-wing move toward New Age Communism. And Satan is an adversarial concept opposing judeo-christian moral-values, laws, authority, etc. Vampir Satanism 999 expresses a new anti-christian or Satanic moral-value system and a push toward a true religious development, as opposed to the Laveyian anti-religious philosophical stand. A new era of Satanism has begun and a New Satanic Vampir Bible is moving the basics of this new belief system among many circles in the dark minded underground. You can also find my first Vampir Novel in this book for all you Vampir-Lovers I spell Vampir without The e in a more German format.

Symbolism has always played an fundamental role in the pursuit of the occult. As the occult largely deals with that which is secret, not revealed and hidden, the mysterious and in particular the supernatural, knowledge of it could only be shared through 'intuitive understanding' rather than quantifiable scientific method. The extensive use of symbolic images proved an excellent manner of recording and relating this obscure and enigmatic lore while at the same time shielding it from the skeptical perception of the uninitiated. Over the ages a wealth of occult images has emerged, largely originating from arcane volumes of ancient hermetic doctrine. Most of the illustrations in this book have been taken from an armorial of this category, Les Devises Heroiques by Claude Paradin, published in 1556. If the use of these pictures was not intentionally occult, its origins for the larger part were so indeed.
