Latin Via Ovid: A First Course

Norma Goldman - 1977
The volume provides students with imaginative, connected reading, beginning with introductory prose versions of Ovid's simple myth tales and progressing to the rich poetry of Ovidian Latin (with appropriate teaching aids) within forty lessons. The grammatical approach is traditional, but the central emphasis is on reading. In each chapter the reading appears first, followed by the vocabulary, the grammar, exercises, and etymology relating to the vocabulary. The exercises begin with a group of questions in Latin (based on the reading), to be answered in Latin. Each tale is preceded by a brief discussion in English of the story and its mythological significance. The myths retold by Ovid and the attractive format are conceived to impel the student into acquiring the skill to read the author in the original language. Accompanying recordings on CD and audio cassette are also available.

Ancient Egypt: Discovering Its Splendors (The Story of Man #?)

Bart McDowell - 1977
This book gives an overview of it, letting readers know about such things as how and why the Pyramids were built, the role religion played in the lives of ancient Egyptians, and the use of hieroglyphs by the people to tell their history. Since the National Geographic Society is known for its superb photographs of natural wonders around the world, it’s no surprise to see this book filled with photographs—both in color and black and white—showing various aspects of Egyptian culture. There are shots of archaeologists at work at excavation sites around the country, colorful photographs of the Pyramids, black and white shots of hieroglyphs, as well as many more of paintings, sculpture, and drawings. Additionally, articles by scholars specializing in Egyptian culture and civilization, appear in the book. Among the Egyptologists contributing to the presentation of the book’s wealth of information about Egyptian civilization are Karl W. Butzer, Virginia Lee Davis, I.E. S. Edwards, Barbara Mertz, William H. Peck, Edna R. Russmann, William Kelly Simpson, and Anthony J. Spalinger.

An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing

Brian C.J. Moore - 1977
The Fifth Edition has been thoroughly updated, with more than 200 references to articles and books published since 1996. The book describes the relationships between the characteristics of the sounds that enter the ear and the sensations that they produce. Wherever possible these relationships are specified in terms of the underlying mechanisms. In other words, the goal is to impart an understanding of what the auditory system does and how it works. Topics covered include the physics of sound, the physiology of the auditory system, frequency selectivity and masking, loudness perception, temporal analysis, pitch perception, sound localization, timbre perception, the perceptual organization of complex auditory "scenes," speech perception, and practical applications such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and high-fidelity sound reproduction. The book starts from basic principles, and does not assume prior knowledge about hearing. Research results are not just described, but are interpreted and evaluated. The book includes extensive references to recent research so that those interested in a specific area can readily obtain more detailed information. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in psychology, speech and hearing sciences, and audiology Will appeal to researchers and professionals involved in sound and hearing, such as audio engineers, otologists, hearing-aid designers, audiologists, and hearing aid dispensers Emphasis on the mechanisms underlying auditory perception with keyconcepts clearly explained

Word Hoard: An Introduction to Old English Vocabulary

Stephen A. Barney - 1977
Exploiting the natural curiosity we feel about our own language, Stephen Barney draws etymological connections, provides mnemonic aids, and introduces the student to cultural and literary concepts as well as words. This second edition of his valuable book has been completely reset in a format that improves its clarity and conciseness. Reviews of the earlier edition:“An excellent piece of work. . . . It makes learning the basic vocabulary of Old English, especially of the poetry, an adventure in ideas, adding in short compass the fascination of etymology and even semantics to the otherwise laborious and at first crude efforts to understand the texts.”—John C. Pope“It obviously reflects enthusiasm and a great deal of hard work, and it will serve very well the students for whom it is intended.”—Thomas D. Hill, Speculum“There is nothing quite like it in the literature. . . . Such a book would have been enthusiastically greeted years ago. It is doubly welcome today.”—ChoiceStephen A. Barney is professor of English at the University of California at Irvine.

Dictionary of German Synonyms

R.B. Farrell - 1977
This reference work, now in its third edition, has been and will continue to be an invaluable source of help to the student. Professor Farrell always takes common English terms - whether concrete or abstract - as his starting point and lists them alphabetically, often in groups of similar meanings and often with their standard dictionary definitions. German synonyms are then given for each different meaning, accompanied by their definitions and numerous pithy sentences illustrating their usage. Explanatory footnotes complement textual comments on individual difficulties. The two word lists of English and German words included in the Dictionary enable the reader to turn easily to the particular word or words he is interested in. For the third edition of the Dictionary, the text has been thoroughly revised and misprints and errors have been corrected: where space permitted, attempts have also been made to improve example sentences and explanations. Professor Farrell has added, as an appendix, his commentary on certain German words which frequently pose problems, either because their meaning is not readily understood or because they have no exact equivalent in English.

Number Words and Number Symbols: A Cultural History of Numbers

Karl A. Menninger - 1977
. . while the casual reader is likely to be intrigued by the author's superior narrative ability." — Library JournalThis book is not only a fascinating introduction to the concept of number and to numbers themselves, hut a multifaceted linguistic and historical analysis of how numbers have developed and evolved in many different cultures. Drawing on evidence from history, literature, philosophy and ethnology, noted German scholar Karl Menninger. recounts the development of numbers both as they are spoken (and written as words) and as symbolic abstract numerals that can he readily manipulated and combined.Despite the immense erudition the author brings to the topic, he maintains a light tone throughout, presenting much of the information in anecdotal form. Moreover, almost 300 illustrations (photographs and drawings) and many comparative language tables serve to enhance the text. The author begins with a lucid treatment of number sequence and number language, including the formation of number words in both Indo-European and non-IndoEuropean languages, hidden number words and the evolution of the number sequence. He then turns to written numerals and computations: finger counting, folk symbols for numbers, alphabetical numerals, the "German" Roman numerals, the abacus and more. The final section concerns the development of our modem decimal system, with its place notation and zero, based on the Indian number system, and its introduction to the West through the work of the Italian mathematician Fibonacci. The author concludes with a review of spoken numbers and number symbols in China and Japan."The book is especially good on early counting and calculating devices: primitive tally sticks, the knotted cords of ancient Peru, the elaborate finger symbols once used for numbers, counting boards with movable counters, and of course the abacus." — Martin Gardner, Book World
