Others encourage contemplation: a knit 1, breathe 1 meditation stitch; creating an heirloom scarf for a yet-to-be descendent; or using a map to a favorite place as the basis for a pattern stitch. Splendid Apparel: A Handbook of Embroidered Knitting
Anna Zilboorg - 2015
The craft of embroidery is devoted to making useful things beautiful. Garments of Praise brings these two crafts together. Anna Zilboorg begins with richly textured knit fabrics then adds embroidery for emphasis, color, detail, and even sheen. A little embroidery can make a big difference in how a knitting pattern “reads.” Watch the magic appear when knit fabric and embroidery are integrated. A craft is about process. Here, explore the combinations with a baker’s dozen of embroidery stitches and a library of over 50 textured knit patterns. Swatches— photographed both as they come off the knitting needles and after embroidery is added— clearly show the transformations and provide springboards for further experimentation. Stitch basics and step-by-step illustrations help a novice learn the simple motions, try variations, and add a contrasting color. Since a knit pattern forms the grid, counting for placement of the embroidery stitches is minimal. Besides suggestions for color and type of threads to use, Anna’s cogent comments identify where a knit stitch may require special attention and adjustments to make the embroidery steps easier. Since observing what doesn’t work is also a crucial part of any design process, Anna discusses stitches considered, sampled, and rejected, and describes the best method of removing embroidery stitches. A craft is also about product. The 18 full patterns in this book are all basic shapes—a few with innovative, join-as-you-go construction. These classic embroidered garments are destined to be modern heirlooms.

To me, simple equals wearable. Simple equals doable. And there’s no greater satisfaction than finishing a hand-knit piece, trying it on and falling in love with it. My goal as a knitter is to make go-to pieces that feel just right, like my favorite soft gray pullover from college. If you spend precious time knitting a garment, you want to love it and wear it a lot. It’s as simple as that. That, to me, is the definition of hand-knit success. Susan's Showy Crochet Flower Patterns: Crochet Patterns for Beautiful and Bold Flowers and Fun Drawstring Bag
Susan Kennedy - 2015
(4.25mm or 5.0 mm) For a light weight yarn, choose a D or E hook (3.25mm or 3.5 mm). Some of these flowers are from my recent individual hat, animal and scarf patterns; eight of them make their debut in this collection. None of them have been included in a previous large flower crochet pattern collection! Work up a whole garden of lovely flowers and scatter them everywhere! You will need to know basic crochet stitches: single crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, chain, slip stitch, and in some of the patterns an optional stitch called a long single crochet stitch. There is a helpful youtube video about this stitch. A few of the flowers also use the technique of working a stitch in only one of the previous stitch’s loops. This is very easy, and when you see “FLO” or “BLO”, you will know to work a stitch in the “front loops only” or “back loops only.” Feel free to make and sell crafts from these designs, but as always please do not republish or share the patterns themselves, as they are my own copyrighted designs. Have a great time with your crochet!

Mini Mosaics
Aimee Harman - 2015
The aim is to make them accessible to all ages and abilities, thereby attracting people who are new to mosaics, love the designs and simply want to have a go, as well as more experienced mosaicists looking for new ideas. The ‘user-friendly’ materials and techniques that the author uses also makes them ideal projects for children, under adult supervision. The book will include a broad range of designs, in different shapes and styles and using different materials - no glass will be used because of the health and safety issues. Each project will be accompanied by an alternative version, used following the same method but using different materials, colours, etc.The emphasis of the projects will be on the designs themselves, and will include several different ways of displaying the mosaics, e.g. as fridge magnets, wall hangings, coasters, mirror frames, jewellery and paperweights.Aimee’s work is characterised by her new and innovative use of different materials within her mosaics - stones, beads, old jewellery, fabric scraps, sequins, feathers, buttons, coins, millefiori, glitter sand, etc. - all of which are readily available from craft stores, online mosaic suppliers, or simply sourced from charity shops, or collected while you’re out on a walk! The author will be able to provide a list of suppliers, and may also be able to supply some materials herself via her website www.mosaicmadromans.com. The method used by the author is the ‘direct method’, which is the simplest method for making mosaics, and involves fixing the tiles and other items directly to an MDF base using strong PVA glue, then grouting when dry.
