Love & Happiness: A collection of personal reflections and quotes
Yasmin Mogahed - 2017
And they break sometimes. Like many of you, my journey hasn't always been easy. Pain is very real. And so is loss. Sometimes it's hard not to let the weight of what we carry--or the memory of what we've lost--take over. Many of us know the reality of struggle, and so many people suffer in silence. It's hard. It's hard not to give up when we face the repeated disappointments of life. Like some of you, I've known loneliness. I've known defeat. I've fallen many times chasing mirages, and broken many bones making castles in life's fading sands. Sometimes, all it took was one solid wave to destroy what I had spent years building. So I decided to give it a voice. All of it: the tears, the pain. And the lessons. The things I saw and learned and gained along my life path needed a voice. I wanted to give back, in hopes of helping myself and others survive. But then it wasn't just about surviving. I didn't just want people to survive inside their storms. I wanted people to thrive inside their storms. And so I wrote, as I walked through my own.The words found in this book became my voice and my letter to the world. They became my deepest attempt to, not just pick myself up, but others along the way. I wrote because, just as we will fall in life, so will we rise. That's the thing about this world. It never gives us only one kind of path. There is pain. Yes. And loss. And even darkness. But there is also light. There is hope. There is beauty. And there is also love and happiness.
Light Upon Light

Stranger No More: A Muslim Refugee’s Story of Harrowing Escape, Miraculous Rescue, and the Quiet Call of Jesus
Annahita Parsan - 2017
Inviting me to take the next step toward his open arms.
And I will say yes.
And yes.
And yes.
Annahita Parsan was born into a Muslim family in Iran and grew up with the simple hope of one day finding a good husband, having children, and doing some good in the world. Married and a mother before she turned eighteen, Annahita found herself unexpectedly widowed and trapped for years in an abusive second marriage that she later fled—discovering instead a God who might love her.Stranger No More is the remarkable true story of Annahita’s path from oppression to the life-changing hope of Jesus. Fleeing Iran across the mountains into Turkey, she spent months in the terrifying Agri prison before a miraculous release and flight to Europe, where she and her two children knelt in a church and prayed, “God, from this day on we are Christians.”Filled with unthinkable circumstances, miraculous rescues, and the quietly constant voice of Jesus, Stranger No More leads readers deep into the heart of God and draws them toward the same call that Annahita heeds today: using her past to save others from theirs. As the leader of two congregations in Sweden, Annahita has baptized hundreds of former Muslims since her own conversion, has seen firsthand the powerful ways God is at work among those who have left Islam behind, and is reminded every day that saying yes to God is always worth the risk.
The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Muslims
Mustafa Akyol - 2017
In fact, Ross Douthat of The New York Times wrote that “if Aslan had actually written in defense of the Islamic view of Jesus, that would have been something provocative and new.”Mustafa Akyol’s The Islamic Jesus is that book. The Islamic Jesus reveals startling new truths about Islam in the context of the first Muslims and the early origins of Christianity. Muslims and the first Christians—the Jewish followers of Jesus—saw Jesus as not divine but rather as a prophet and human Messiah and that salvation comes from faith and good works, not merely as faith, as Christians would later emphasize. What Akyol seeks to reveal are how these core beliefs of Jewish Christianity, which got lost in history as a heresy, emerged in a new religion born in 7th Arabia: Islam.Akyol exposes this extraordinary historical connection between Judaism, Jewish Christianity and Islam—a major mystery unexplored by academia. From Jesus’ Jewish followers to the Nazarenes and Ebionites to the Qu’ran’s stories of Mary and Jesus, The Islamic Jesus will reveal links between religions that seem so contrary today. It will also call on Muslims to discover their own Jesus, at a time when they are troubled by their own Pharisees and Zealots.
Letters to a Young Muslim
Omar Saif Ghobash - 2017
Today's young Muslims will be tomorrow's leaders, and yet too many are vulnerable to extremist propaganda that seems omnipresent in our technological age. The burning question, Ghobash argues, is how moderate Muslims can unite to find a voice that is true to Islam while actively and productively engaging in the modern world. What does it mean to be a good Muslim? What is the concept of a good life? And is it acceptable to stand up and openly condemn those who take the Islamic faith and twist it to suit their own misguided political agendas? In taking a hard look at these seemingly simple questions, Ghobash encourages his sons to face issues others insist are not relevant, not applicable, or may even be Islamophobic. These letters serve as a clear-eyed inspiration for the next generation of Muslims to understand how to be faithful to their religion and still navigate through the complexities of today's world. They also reveal an intimate glimpse into a world many are unfamiliar with and offer to provide an understanding of the everyday struggles Muslims face around the globe."
The House of Islam: The Hearts and Minds of a Billion Believers
Ed Husain - 2017
It introduces us to the fairness, kindness and mercy of Mohammed; the aims of sharia law, through commentary on scripture, to provide an ethical basis to life; the beauty of Islamic art and the permeation of the divine in public spaces; and the tension between mysticism and literalism that still threatens the House of Islam. The decline of the Muslim world and the current crises of leadership mean that a glorious past, full of intellectual nobility and purpose, is now exploited by extremists and channelled into acts of terror. How can Muslims confront the issues that are destroying Islam from within, and what can the West do to help work towards that end?Ed Husain guides us through the nuances of Islam and its people, contending that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor its enemy, but a peaceable ally.
FATWA: Hunted in America
Pamela Geller - 2017
With the slicing wit and piercing insight that have characterized all her work, Pamela Geller here recounts her unlikely journey from New York City career girl to indomitably fearless human rights activist, reviled by the enemies of freedom the world over. 'I assumed my freedom,' she writes. 'Never for one moment did I think that it could be taken from me. But all that changed on one day.' That day was September 11, 2001, when on a beautiful, bright blue sunny morning, the global jihad struck in America with terrifying and murderous force. The United States of America and the free world as a whole would never be the same again. Neither would Pamela Geller. In this book, Geller tells the whole extraordinary story of how she began chronicling her take on news events at her groundbreaking website Atlas Shrugs, then moved into activism, at first on behalf of Muslim girls who were being brutalized and victimized at home for not following the misogynistic rules of Islamic law, and then to stand against the advance of jihad and sharia on numerous fronts -- above all for the freedom of speech, which is increasingly embattled in this age of jihad. It's all here: Geller recounts the battle to defeat the sinister Ground Zero mosque project; the ISIS attack at Geller's Mohammed Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas; the fatwa issued to her and plot to behead her; and much more including the relentless vilification from a mainstream media hell-bent on defaming and destroying everyone who stands for freedom against jihad terror and sharia oppression. Pamela Geller writes: 'Any lover of freedom would have been tarred the same way I was, and many have been. I am but a proxy in this terrible, long war. What has happened to me is what happens, in small and large ways, to every American who stands for freedom.' Yet, as shown in this book, she has prevailed. Without Pamela Geller, there would be a 16-story mega-mosque at Ground Zero today. Without Pamela Geller, untold numbers of young women who are living free today instead would have been victims of honor killings. Without Pamela Geller, countless numbers of indefatigable fighters for freedom would have been cowed and intimidated into silence by an increasingly violent and authoritarian left-wing agenda. If this book is proof of anything, it's that one person can make a difference. And what a remarkable difference Pamela Geller has made. At last, in Fatwa: Hunted In America, she tells her story.

No Go Zones: How Sharia Law Is Coming to a Neighborhood Near You
Raheem Kassam - 2017
That's what they're called. And while the politically correct try to deny their existence, the shocking reality of these "No Go Zones"—where Sharia law can prevail and local police stay away—can be attested to by its many victims. Now Raheem Kassam, a courageous reporter and editor at Breitbart.com, takes us where few journalists have dared to tread—inside the No Go Zones, revealing areas that Western governments, including the United States, don't want to admit exist within their own borders. With compelling reporting, Kassam takes you into Islamic areas you might not even know existed—communities, neighborhoods, and whole city districts from San Bernardino, California, (a No Go Zone of the mind) to Hamtramck, Michigan (essentially an Islamic colony in the Midwest); from Malmö, Sweden, to the heart of London, England—where infidels are unwelcome, Islamic law is king, and extremism grows. In No Go Zones, Kassam reveals: How in No Go Zones a blind eye is being turned to polygamy, female genital mutilation, sexual assault, segregation, and even honor killings Why Muslim ghettos in the West aren't the equivalent of Little Italy or Chinatown, but a serious cultural and political threat How the welfare state actually funds and supports a Muslim subculture of resentment How to identify extremist mosques A matter of numbers: how mass migration could transform Europe into a Muslim-dominated continent within our own lifetimes The alarming speed at which No Go Zones are coming to America Compelling in its reporting, shocking in its detail, Raheem Kassam's No Go Zones is one of the most frightening true stories you will read this year.

Confessions of an Islamophobe
Robert Spencer - 2017
Elites across North America and Europe fight to silence those who argue, compellingly, that the roots of terrorism are within Islam itself which has evolved into far more than a religion—it is a radical and dangerous political ideology which consciously, if often tacitly, places itself in opposition to democracy and basic human rights. Robert Spencer, one of the world’s foremost critical scholars of Islam, has been labeled Public Enemy #1 by those who apologize for Islam and its violent excesses. He has been called a propagandist, a racist, and an “Islamophobe”—a term that he willingly embraces in this provocative and important book. There needs to be a thoroughgoing and honest public discussion of the acceptable parameters of criticism of Islam in light of genuine interests not only of national security but of civilizational survival. Our lives, quite literally, could depend on it, as could those of our children and our children’s children. Confessions of an Islamophobe is an attempt to begin that discussion.
Radical Skin/Moderate Mask: Islamic de-Radicalisation and Racism in Post-Racial Societies
Yassir Morsi - 2017
This timely work examines the State's use of narrative to "reform" violent political subjects, and explores how these narratives intersect with issues of immigration, border control and a post-racial era of accepting difference. It examines the racial assumptions hidden within public and institutional debates around Muslim radicals through a liberal state's appropriation of moderate Muslim voices. The book illustrates how insidiously the problem of race connects post-racially with a range of negative discourses and images conjured up by the narrative of the War on Terror.

Stealth Invasion: Muslim Conquest Through Immigration and Resettlement Jihad
Leo Hohmann - 2017
immigration system seemingly obsessed with welcoming as many unassimilable migrants with anti-Western values as possible. As a result, largely secret plans for major population changes in hundreds of U.S. cities and towns are already being implemented. This transformation is taking place not only in gateway cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, but in such all-American towns as Twin Falls, Idaho, and St. Cloud, Minnesota, where tensions brought on by the importation of hostile cultures are already causing shock waves. As Stealth Invasion reveals, the Muslim Brotherhood has a well-defined strategy for conquering America, not necessarily with violent jihadist attacks – although we should expect those to increase – but through more subtle means collectively called "civilization jihad."According to the Brotherhood's own documents seized by the FBI, "civilization jihad" involves infiltrating and conquering Western democracies from within. The goal is to partner with leftist and anarchist groups (such as "Black Lives Matter") to tear at the fabric of Western civilization and the Judeo-Christian values that undergird it. Their intent is to use liberal immigration laws to create "settlements" for Islam in America, which in turn become enclaves of non-assimilated Muslims who can easily become "radicalized" by a preacher at a local mosque, or by watching a Youtube video posted by an imam in Pakistan.Very simply, civilization jihad calls for changing a nation by changing its people and its values – gradually, over time.Meanwhile, the world is undergoing a historic shift of populations – out of the Middle East and Africa, and into Europe, Canada and the United States. The fact that the majority of those coming to America as part of this new immigration wave bring a hostile value system based on sharia law, and have little interest in assimilating into American culture, seems of no concern to our leaders in the White House and Congress.Indeed, refugee resettlement and expanded visa programs have enjoyed the full support of both major parties. Instead of learning the lessons of 9/11 and tightening up America's immigration system, our leaders have expanded it wildly and recklessly.Stealth Invasion connects the dots between the problems of growing violence and unrest that have plagued Europe and what is now unfolding across America. The terror attacks on Chattanooga, Orlando, San Bernardino, St. Cloud, Minnesota, and the Chelsea area of Manhattan were all carried out by Muslim immigrants, or, in the case of San Bernardino and Orlando, by sons of Muslim immigrants. A surprising number of foiled attacks have also been plotted since 9/11 by Muslim refugees and immigrants.Stealth Invasion blows the lid off a corrupt, fraudulent program that has been secretly dumping Third World refugees, many of them radical, on American cities for three decades. Readers will meet the people and groups behind this shadowy resettlement network, which starts at the United Nations and includes the White House, the U.S. State Department, some surprising church groups, and corporate honchos involved in everything from investment banking and meatpacking, to Florida vacations and yogurt manufacturing.Americans have been kept largely in the dark about the radical plans to permanently transform their nation. Until now.In Stealth Invasion,Leo Hohmann reveals how Congress has turned a blind eye to the program since President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Refugee Act of 1980, allowing the United Nations – not American officials – to select the refugees sent to our cities. As a result, those selected are increasingly coming from hotbeds of Sunni radicalism like Syria, Iraq, and Somalia while a growing population of persecuted Christians are left behind. The government uses a network of private agencies, most with churchy names tied to Lutherans, Catholics, Episcopalians, Jews and even evangelicals, to do the resettlement work, but the public is shut out of the process from beginning to end. No public hearings, no public notices in the local newspaper asking for their input.Stealth Invasion uncovers how various cities have become refugee hotspots and examines grassroots uprisings where citizens have challenged this secret cabal and won. Armed with knowledge of the government’s methods for dealing with local resettlement backlash, Hohmann provides details on how concerned Americans can most effectively respond. The great "melting pot" that once typified the success of America's immigration system no longer seems to be working. The old shared values of God, country, family, and freedom that used to hold the country together are breaking down.In Stealth Invasion, Leo Hohmann shows that the breakdown is no coincidence and it hasn't manifested overnight. It's been brewing since the 1980s, but is now reaching the point where it is about to metastasize and overtake us all – unless it is stopped now.
The Barbarians Are Here: Preventing the Collapse of Western Civilization in Times of Terrorism
Michael Youssef - 2017
But the Muslim world seemed far away, remote, and irrelevant to our daily lives. Then came the terrorist attacks of 9/11, followed by attacks at Fort Hood, the Boston Marathon, San Bernardino, and more. Now terrorists seem to be emerging everywhere, unleashing senseless death and destruction on our nation. They are here, and their goal is nothing less than global conquest. Motivated by ancient prophecies, they are flooding into Western countries determined to conquer our countries and establish a global Muslim caliphate. In The Barbarians Are Here, Dr. Michael Youssef provides clear insight into the motives and mission of the Islamic extremists. He offers practical steps we can take right now to begin a New Reformation that will restore the hope of Western civilization. It's not too late. We are not doomed to destruction, even though the barbarians are already here. But we haven't a moment to lose. "Let this book shape how you think, pray, and take the Gospel to the ends of the earth." -- R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary "I want every American, every citizen, and every member of my family to read this book. It is foolhardy not to." -- Pat Boone, Entertainer, Pat Boone Enterprises
Holistic Islam: Sufism, Transformation, and the Needs of Our Time
Kabir Helminski - 2017
Today's world is desperately in need of a spirituality that is free of dogma, based in experiences not beliefs, one that can reconcile the human and spiritual realms. In his new book, renowned spiritual teacher and Sufi sheikh Kabir Helminski, gives us a compelling interpretation of spiritual or holistic Islam that will hearten contemporary Muslims looking for a faith suited for our times, and providing non-Muslims a brilliant introduction to this rich spiritual tradition.Helminksi’s holistic Islam is an emerging force in the world. It is reflected in the rise of the popularity of the writings of Jalal ad-Din Rumi who is loved by followers of all faiths and none. Helminski shows how it is the great Sufi teachers of the Islamic tradition who show the way to this universal wisdom. Holistic Islam is an expression of the primordial religion of humanity that recognizes a journey through levels of consciousness leading to the transformation of self and the mature human being. While all religions have a tendency to decline into sectarianism, legalism, fundamentalism, and superstition, humanity is never without the presence of realized human beings who have shared the knowledge and practice of communion with Ultimate Reality.Holistic Islam is a spiritual antidote to extremism and fundamentalism, established on a clear Quranic basisHolistic Islam uses Quranic arguments to establish a spiritually progressive Islam
Qur'an of the Oppressed: Liberation Theology and Gender Justice in Islam
Shadaab Rahemtulla - 2017
Shadaab Rahemtulla considers the exegeses of the SouthAfrican Farid Esack (b. 1956), the Indian Asghar Ali Engineer (1939-2013), the African American Amina Wadud (b. 1952), and the Pakistani American Asma Barlas (b. 1950). Rahemtulla examines how these intellectuals have been able to expound this seventh-century Arabian text in a socially liberatingway, addressing their own lived realities of oppression, and thus contexts that are worlds removed from that of the text's immediate audience. Through a close reading of their works, he underlines the importance of both the ethico-social content of the Qur'an and their usage of new and innovativereading practices. This work provides a rich analysis of the thought-ways of specific Muslim intellectuals, thereby substantiating a broadly framed school of thought. Rahemtulla draws out their specific and general importance without displaying an uncritical sympathy. He sheds light on the impact of modern exegeticalcommentary which is more self-consciously concerned with historical context and present realities. In a mutually reinforcing way, this work thus illuminates both the role of agency and hermeneutical approaches in modern Islamic thought.
The Challenge of Dawa: Political Islam as Ideology and Movement and How to Counter It
Ayaan Hirsi Ali - 2017
Honor/Shame Cultures: A Beginner's Guide to Cross-Cultural Missions
Juliet November - 2017
Until we meet another culture, most of us never realize that our way of looking at the world is not the only way and our way of acting, or interpreting actions, may not be the only right way. Honor/Shame Cultures looks at the root values in many of the countries from the majority world, and offers practical advice on how to sail smoothly through foreign waters especially when missions or ministry is involved. The book is split into 3 parts. The first part lays a foundational understanding of world views and the root value systems beneath our cultures. The second part examines the manifestations of honor/shame cultures, such as face, patron-client relationships, hierarchies, reciprocity and collectivism. The last part takes a deeper look at how we redeem honor in cross-cultural missions, including how it affects our Gospel presentations, conflict resolution strategies and discipleship methods. Each chapter is filled with case studies of real experiences of cross-cultural workers around Asia. At the end of each chapter is a set of discussion questions as well as a recommended reading list for those who wish to investigate that topic further. This book is aimed to equip short term mission teams, new missionaries, cross-cultural workers and anyone wanting to understand their honor/shame neighbor better.
The Virtues of Seclusion in Times of Confusion
Shaykh Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi - 2017
In this work that speaks to us and our time, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi brilliantly weaves together the Quranic verses, hadith reports, and counsels of the Salaf concerning self-imposed seclusion and its importance as a protective measure to safeguard our faith and shore up our spiritual defenses in times of strife and confusion (fitna). This seclusion, he tells us, is not about withdrawing completely from society and heading for the hills, but rather sitting things out, keeping busy with personal and familial concerns, minding our business—staying at home. It is a call for taking careful stock of where we are spiritually and assessing where exactly our sphere of influence is and not overextending ourselves to our own detriment and the detriment of our loved ones.

The Islam in Islamic Terrorism: The Importance of Beliefs, Ideas, and Ideology
Ibn Warraq - 2017
Many scholars refuse to take into account the beliefs of the terrorists, and many seem to think that “Islamic terrorism” has emerged only in the last forty years or so. Many analysts believe that the United States was targeted because of its foreign policy, while others opine that we have to dig out the root causes which are essentially socioeconomic, with poverty as the favorite explanation. Ibn Warraq, on the other hand, argues that we must take the beliefs of the jihadists seriously. The acts of ISIS or the Taliban or any other jihadist group are not random acts of violence by a mob of psychopathic, sexually frustrated, impoverished vandals, but carefully and strategically planned operations that are a part of a long campaign by educated, affluent Muslims who wish to bring about the establishment of an Islamic state based on the Shari‘a, the Islamic Holy Law derived from the Koran, the Sunna and the Hadith. Nor did Islamic terrorism emerge, ex nihilo, in the past forty years or so. From its foundation in the seventh century, violent movements have arisen seeking to revive true Islam, which its members felt had been neglected in Muslim societies, who were not living up to the ideals of the earliest Muslims. Thus, the answer to the cause of Islamic terrorism, according to Ibn Warraq, lies in Islamic theology (especially the concepts of jihad and Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong), and Islamic history, both of which he examines closely. This is borne out by what the Islamists themselves tell us, hence Ibn Warraq’s detailed examination of the writings of key Islamic thinkers of the past, such as Ibn Taymiyya, and modern activists, from Mawdudi to Khomeini.

Sayyid Muneer Al-Khabbaz - 2017
And He is the Almighty, the All-forgiving.” Life was created so that the community of man may strive to achieve excellence. And it is through the triumph of justice over oppression and of virtue over vice that such excellence can be attained. Because this is the overarching purpose of creation, God has given mankind the means to usher in this triumph of justice and virtue – “Certainly We sent Our apostles with manifest proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance, so that mankind may maintain justice.” God has given us our honored prophets, our holy scriptures, and our revered Immaculate Leaders as means of guidance as we strive towards that goal. And one day, by God’s grace, we will achieve that goal and fulfill God’s promise that “Certainly We wrote in the Psalms after the Torah: Indeed Our righteous servants shall inherit the earth.” This book is about the man who is chosen to usher in this promise of justice and virtue – our Twelfth Immaculate Leader, the Awaited Savior – the Mahdi.
Jihadi Culture
Thomas Hegghammer - 2017
While much attention has been given to the operations and doctrines of jihadi groups, this is the first book to explore their culture. Using a wealth of primary sources, the authors examine what goes on inside these organizations and what daily life is like for the foot-soldiers. They show that Islamist militants have a rich aesthetic culture and do much more than fight and train. Life in a jihadi group is in fact filled with poetry and music, and fighters spend time on surprising things like dream interpretation and weeping. Readers will discover an entirely new perspective on radical Islamists: that despite their reputation as macho men, they value humility, artistic sensitivity, and displays of emotion. Cultural practices are essential for understanding the jihadi worldview and may shed important new light on decision-making and recruitment processes in extremist groups. This original book will interest anyone in academia, government, or the general public who is intrigued by the appeal and resilience of the jihadi movement.

With God's Permission, this work will aid readers in the cultivation of beauty in all actions whether it is in spending, consuming, grooming and loving. To exercise our agency in defining and creating beauty for ourselves liberates us from our self imposed enslavement. Before Orthodoxy: The Satanic Verses in Early Islam
Shahab Ahmed - 2017
Known as the Satanic verses, these praises to the pagan deities contradict the Islamic belief that Allah is one and absolute. Muslims today--of all sects--deny that the incident of the Satanic verses took place. But as Shahab Ahmed explains, Muslims did not always hold this view. Before Orthodoxy wrestles with the question of how religions establish truth--especially religions such as Islam that lack a centralized authority to codify beliefs. Taking the now universally rejected incident of the Satanic verses as a case study in the formation of Islamic orthodoxy, Ahmed shows that early Muslims, circa 632 to 800 CE, held the exact opposite belief. For them, the Satanic verses were an established fact in the history of the Prophet. Ahmed offers a detailed account of the attitudes of Muslims to the Satanic verses in the first two centuries of Islam and traces the chains of transmission in the historical reports known as riwāyah.Touching directly on the nature of Muhammad's prophetic visions, the interpretation of the Satanic verses incident is a question of profound importance in Islam, one that plays a role in defining the limits of what Muslims may legitimately say and do--issues crucial to understanding the contemporary Islamic world.
INDIAN MUSLIMS: Children of India or Slaves of Arabs? (Reviving Indian History Book 1)
Vashi Sharma - 2017

Or as the progeny of those 'enlightened' souls who embraced Islam leaving behind the 'darkness' of idolatry- Hinduism. However, deep within, they know the real story of the most bloodiest chapter of human history - the Islamic conquest of Indian subcontinent which killed, raped and converted their ancestors to Islam. This book presents the story of undeniable mass killing, rapes and conversions of Hindus of Indian subcontinent whose children are now known as Indian (and Pakistani/Bangladeshi) Muslims. This book is a message of unity. Mother India is torn between its two children - Hindus and Muslims who were one once. It is the call to brave, accept your roots. Find your lost mother. Find your lost brothers.
Stubborn Perseverance: How to Launch Multiplying Movements of Disciples and Churches Among Muslims and Others
James Nyman - 2017
This book illustrates and details biblical principles by which YOU can pursue God for a disciple-making movement in your own context. David Garrison, author of A Wind in the House of Islam writes: “
Stubborn Perseverance
isn’t just a manual, it’s a record of the inner workings of a real church-planting movement that invites readers to join the exciting adventure of launching such movements.” Movements happen where believers intentionally:
go where the lost are comfortable (but we may not be),
involve pre-existing groups with natural affinity (that live, work or play together),
engage these groups in “discovery” of Jesus’ teachings and commands, then
equip new believers to do the same in their other relational networks.
Stubborn Perseverance
illustrates how to build on a foundation of prayer, fasting and prayer-walking with several approaches for finding “Persons of Peace” (POPs) who will engage others in discussing Jesus’ teachings.
Stubborn Perseverance
models these universal methods for finding such POPs:
salting conversation with thanksgiving to God,
sharing personal salvation stories,
offering prayer for deliverance from sickness, demonization, and “storms of life,” and
sharing a Creation to Christ gospel presentation.
Stubborn Perseverance
also illustrates two methods for finding POPs especially appropriate with Muslims:
asking, “Do you know anyone who has had a dream from God?,” and
using verses from the Qur’an as a bridge to lead Muslims into the Bible.
While nearly all the material in
Stubborn Perseverance
is universally applicable, believers interested in loving Muslims to Jesus will find extensive, specialized resources for guiding Muslims to discover: what the Qur’an itself says about Jesus (their “Isa”) and the Bible (their “former books”), and Jesus as the “Straight Path” to which the Qur'an calls Muslims. Those who find a mentor and gather others to read and apply
Stubborn Perseverance
will find this manual a true catalyst for greater fruitfulness. Explaining Israel's Mysterious Imperial Agenda
Imran N. Hosein - 2017
Bush was “the world’s greatest terrorist”, it was clear that while he had not studied the subject sufficiently, since that notorious distinction belongs to Israel and not to Bush, he certainly showed greater understanding of the subject and more courage than most politicians and leaders today. But Israel has another unique distinction that continuously escapes the attention of scribes, scholars and politicians. It is the only state in the world that has continuously waged unjust war with disdain for ‘gentile’ opinion, and even escalate its warfare while rendering the rest of the world powerless to do anything tangible to prevent it. The rest of the world, that is, except Islam! Israel’s deliberately barbarous and disproportionate military response to the Sunni Islamic resistance’s capture of one enemy soldier in the Gaza Strip, and the further capture of two more enemy soldiers by the Shia Islamic resistance in Southern Lebanon, not only constitutes yet another Israeli war crime but also sets up Israel once again for eventual retributive punishment that would be commensurate with all those war crimes. Neither Prophets David nor Solomon (peace be upon them both) ever waged war the Israeli way, with a barbarian ethical code of warfare which permits the indiscriminate bombing-destruction of entire civilian populations, men women and children, in their homes, villages, temples, and bomb-shelters (60 just killed in a village bomb-shelter in Qana, including 37 children) as well as the destruction of civilian airports, roads, bridges, electricity power plants, water works, etc., and the displacement of almost half the population of a country as refugees fleeing for their lives.

Aqeedah Tahaawiyyah-The Creed of Imam Tahawi
أبو جعفر الطحاوي - 2017
There is consensus among the Companions, the Successors and all the leading Islamic authorities such as the four Imams and their authoritative followers on the doctrines enumerated in this work, which are entirely derived from the undisputed primary sources of Religion, the Holy Qur'an and the confirmed Hadith. Being a text on Islamic doctrine, this work sums up the arguments set forth in those two sources to define sound belief, and likewise, the arguments advanced in refuting the views of sects that have deviated from the Sunna. As regards the sects mentioned in this work, familiarity with Islamic history up to the time of Imam Tahawi would be quite helpful. More or less veiled references to sects such as the Mu`tazila, the Jahmiyya, the Karramiyya, the Qadariyya, and the Jabariyya are found in the work. It also contains allusions to other views considered unorthodox and deviant from the way of Ahl al-Sunna. There is an explicit reference in the work to the controversy on the creation of the Qu'ran in the times of al-Ma'mun and others. While the permanent relevance of the statements of belief in the `Aqida are obvious, the historical weight and point of certain of these statements can be properly appreciated only if the work is used as a text for study under the guidance of some learned person able to elucidate its arguments fully, with reference to the intellectual and historical background of the sects refuted in the work. Since the present book is intended exactly as one such aid towards understanding the details of Islamic belief with clarity, it is hoped that the quotation of the entire text of Tahawi's "Doctrine," which we consider as the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama`a, will be of benefit to the reader. And may Allah grant us a true understanding of faith and count us among those described by the Prophet as the Saved Group.

Refuting ISIS
Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi - 2017
These attacks, which must be condemned by Muslim scholars and preachers around the world, are another testimony that, by killing women, children, and civilians, ISIS betrayed Islam, betrayed the Holy Quran, and betrayed the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). After the overwhelming response to the first edition, the author felt the need for a second edition that quenches the thirst of the readers with more details. He penned this second edition to further elaborate on many important topics, such as the prohibition of burning human beings, the abolition of slavery, and Islam’s position towards minorities. New subjects are also tackled, such as the invalidity of excommunicating Muslim rulers for not applying certain aspects of Shari’ah, Islam’s position towards democracy, and the prohibition of destroying pre-Islamic monuments and sacred sites. Several other topics benefitted from more rigorous proofs, especially the section confirming that ISIS criminals have left the fold of Islam and are no longer Muslims.

Twilight of a World: The Signs of the Times at the Approaches of the Hour According to Islam

We Muslims have been amply forewarned about these days, having received from our Blessed Prophet—may peace be upon him—detailed knowledge of what is now actually taking place, together with instructions on how to cope with these perils. There is a large corpus of Prophetic traditions concerning the Latter Days and the events that lead up to them. For the Prophet—may God's blessings and peace be upon him—informed us, his people, of everything we need to know in order to navigate the storms that he knew were sure to come our way. Not only did he teach us our creed, Sacred Law, and how to enhance our spirituality, but also the signs by which we should be able to recognize which stage of the history of our community we have reached and what ought to be done about it.Dr. Mostafa al-Badawi is by profession a Psychiatrist and by vocation a scholar of Islamic sciences. Al-Badawi's translations of Imam al-Haddad's works and his biography (Sufi Sage of Arabia) are now familiar to English-speaking Muslims. His own works include: Man and the Universe, Ancient Prophets of Arabia, A Blessed Valley: Wadi Hadramawt and the Alawi Tradition, and A Higher Reality: Manifestations of the Unseen.

Eye of the Heart: Journey to Islam
Stephanie Sommieh Flower - 2017
Like most adolescents, she questioned the meaning of life. Her search for purpose launched a life-long spiritual quest. Eye of the Heart traces the path of her journey from Stephanie to Sommieh, as she seeks a connection to God that transcends the material world. From the quietude of nature to the frenzy of Manhattan, from the grandeur of Mecca to a rugged mountain top in Pakistan, Sommieh's inward and outward journey is one of mysticism, poetry, and faith; sometimes heartbreaking, often inspiring, but always imbued with God's grace. It's truly a journey to the soul.PRAISE FOR EYE OF THE HEART "Reading Eye of the Heart is like experiencing a wonderful, deep dream; the further you go the longer you want to stay. A paradoxical journey from elite Manhattan life to teaching slum children in Pakistan, Stephanie Flower invites her reader along for an intimate ride that will open your own heart's eye." --Chris Abdul Rahman Blauvelt, Founder and CEO of Launchgood.com "There are many ways to read Sommieh Flower's memoir, but the most important one is not her conversion story, nor the contrast between the family and society into which she was born, and the societies in which she has lived during her adult life. For me as an educator, the most enduring contribution of the author is the vision of education--how to engage the young in an altruistic and uplifting kind of schooling. She has long been a person of vision with the even rarer ability to implement that vision with teachers and students, and to communicate it to others in a way that lets it live and spread. The story of her well-rounded humanities education and her embrace of Islam that led her into this vision of participatory, child-centered, empathetic and out-ward-looking education is one that the Muslim community should take to heart and embrace. Like the wider American community, the Muslim community abroad and in the US has mistakenly erred on the side of regimented education with an overemphasis on the STEM fields. Her example, pursued with dogged persistence, lights the way to a different possibility." --Susan Douglass, curriculum developer, education outreach provider at Georgetown University "This expansive baring of the soul is likened to a roller coaster ride. It begins smooth, sometimes folds back on itself, at times it turns upside down but finds its footing just before the next loop. There is a hesitation at the crest and a hair-raising ride down, only to be taken back up again to new heights. Eye of the Heart will let you know who the author is, as very little is held back. May Allah bless Sommieh in her endeavor." --Loretta J. Poisson, author (Between a Pyramid and a Hard Place) "The Eye of the Heart: Journey to My Soul" is indeed a journey which author Flower invites us to join; it's the voyage of an American youth, wife and mother, educator and a believer in Allah's universality through Islamic teachings. This is a memoir of simplicity, intimacy and compassion easy to share, even though the life that unfolds, page by page, is in many ways unique. Stephanie Flower takes us from her early years as a typical American child, through her sometimes aimless, but mostly determined path towards the divine and her own personal maturity. Sister Flower's sometimes understated social and spiritual encounters make her life less exotic and more normal than one might expect--so that becoming Muslim and living Islam are entirely natural and reveal Flower's forever evolving heart and spirit. Engaging in this journey with her is an endearing experience." --Barbara Nimri Aziz, anthropologist

Jinnealogy: Time, Islam, and Ecological Thought in the Medieval Ruins of Delhi
Anand Vivek Taneja - 2017
The spirits they entreat are Islamic jinns, and they write out requests as if petitioning the state. At a time when a Hindu right wing government in India is committed to normalizing a view of the past that paints Muslims as oppressors, Anand Vivek Taneja's Jinnealogy provides a fresh vision of religion, identity, and sacrality that runs counter to state-sanctioned history. The ruin, Firoz Shah Kotla, is an unusually democratic religious space, characterized by freewheeling theological conversations, DIY rituals, and the sanctification of animals. Taneja observes the visitors, who come mainly from the Muslim and Dalit neighborhoods of Delhi, and uses their conversations and letters to the jinns as an archive of voices so often silenced. He finds that their veneration of the jinns recalls pre-modern religious traditions in which spiritual experience was inextricably tied to ecological surroundings. In this enchanted space, Taneja encounters a form of popular Islam that is not a relic of bygone days, but a vibrant form of resistance to state repression and post-colonial visions of India.
Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi's Forgotten Message
Shems Friedlander - 2017
There is a need to understand Islam in contemporary times.Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi is deeply rooted in the prophetic tradition. Rumi is the most popular poet of our age yet is almost completely misunderstood and misinterpreted in the popular culture.Within his Mesnevi, The Signs of the Unseen, and his other work, is the 'Forgotten Message' that can awaken one to the purpose of life. Today, when so many would like to read Rumi and remove any reference to Sufism and Islam, Shems Friedlander places him unequivocally within Sufism and the Heart of Islam, clearly and emphatically stating the necessity of studying Rumi in his essence, as a Sufi saint, the founder of the Mevlevi Order of Dervishes, as well as one of the greatest metaphysical poets and literary figures the world has known.Friedlander sheds new light on the relationship of Shems and Rumi and offers a theory about Shems' disappearance not previously voiced. We are the heirs of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi. How will we treat this inheritance? Will we squander it among those who have been deceived by the world? Argue its validity with scholars in classrooms and teahouses; or will we feed yearning hearts, enhance the intellectual desires of youth, and fill the gap of disappointment of those who have reached maturity and seniority and are still empty?"
The Qur'an and the Just Society
Ramon Harvey - 2017
Utilising a pioneering theological and hermeneutic framework adapted from both classical Muslim literature and contemporary academic studies of the Qur'an, Ramon Harvey explores the underlying principles of its system of social justice. Three Treatises: Mutual Reminders, Good Manners & The Aphorisms
ʻAbd Allāh ibn ʻAlawī al-Ḥaddād - 2017
The first treatise, Mutual Reminding, distils the ethic and content of offering good counsel to one another. The chief elements of counsel, says the Imām, are Taqwā, an active fear and consciousness of God, and detachment from the material world. These elements connect with the topic of the second treatise, Good Manners, which discusses the manners recommended of the spiritual wayfarer as he or she takes the path to spiritual felicity. The third treatise, The Aphorisms, is a compilation of Imām al-Ḥaddād's wise insights on a broad range of topics and includes the commentary of Shaykh Muḥammad Ḥayāt al-Sindī.Dr. Mostafa al-Badawi is a consultant Psychiatrist and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He studied under many shaykhs, foremost among whom is the late Habib Ahmad Mashur al-Haddad. Muslim Superheroes: Comics, Islam, and Representation
A. David LewisFredrik Strömberg - 2017
Muslim Superheroes tracks the initial absence, reluctant inclusion, tokenistic employment, and then nuanced scripting of Islamic protagonists in the American superhero comic book market and beyond. This scholarly anthology investigates the ways in which Muslim superhero characters fulfill, counter, or complicate Western stereotypes and navigate popular audience expectations globally, under the looming threat of Islamophobia. The contributors consider assumptions buried in the very notion of a character who is both a superhero and a Muslim with an interdisciplinary and international focus characteristic of both Islamic studies and comics studies scholarship. Muslim Superheroes investigates both intranational American racial formation and international American geopolitics, juxtaposed with social developments outside U.S. borders.Providing unprecedented depth to the study of Muslim superheroes, this collection analyzes, through a series of close readings and comparative studies, how Muslim and non-Muslim comics creators and critics have produced, reproduced, and represented different conceptions of Islam and Muslimness embodied in the genre characters.

What Is Islamophobia?: Racism, Social Movements and the State
Narzanin Massoumi - 2017
Critiquing mainstream, conservative, and notionally left arguments, What Is Islamophobia? offers an original and necessary alternative to the existing literature by analyzing what the editors call the “five pillars of Islamophobia:” the institutions and machinery of the state, the counter-jihad movement, the neoconservative movement, the transnational Zionist movement, and assorted liberal groups, including the pro-war left and the new atheist movement. Together, the contributors demonstrate that this emergent racism is not simply a product of ideology, but is driven by a combination of social, political, and cultural factors. What Is Islamophobia? concludes with reflections on existing strategies for tackling this growing issue and considers different approaches to countering anti-Muslim prejudice.
What No Eye Has Seen: A Comprehensive Description Of Paradise As Recorded In Islamic Scriptures
محمد بن علوي المالكي - 2017
It has been put together by its author in a very concise manner thus making it extremely accessible for the reader. Included are more than two hundred footnotes. . Mala'yn Raat - An Exposition of Paradise This is a translation of Mala'yn Raat which explains everything that you ever wanted to know about Paradise, (al-Jannah) in one book. It is extremely rare that a text is written, on this subject, with this conciseness. The author speaks about different aspects of Paradise beginning with the amount of gates leading into Paradise and how to get there. The title of this treatise is taken from the Hadith as reported by Bukhari and Muslim: ''Allah said; 'I have prepared for my righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear heard and what has not occurred to the Human heart.'' The mind boggles about the unimaginable delights awaiting those who enter Paradise. We can but imagine this great divine blessing but with this text now we can understand its description.

The book explores multiple pathways of cleric radicalization and shows that the interplay of academic, religious, and political institutions has influenced the rise of modern jihadism through a mechanism of blocked ambition. As long as clerics' academic ambitions remain attainable, they are unlikely to espouse violent jihad. Clerics who are forced out of academia are more likely to turn to jihad for two reasons: jihadist ideas are attractive to those who see the system as turning against them, and preaching a jihad ideology can help these outsider clerics attract supporters and funds. The book draws on evidence from various sources, including large-scale statistical analysis of texts and network data obtained from the Internet, case studies of clerics' lives, and ethnographic participant observations at sites in Cairo, Egypt.
Tunisia: An Arab Anomaly
Safwan M Masri - 2017
In a region beset by brutal repression, humanitarian disasters, and civil war, Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution alone gave way to a peaceful transition to a functioning democracy. Within four short years, Tunisians passed a progressive constitution, held fair parliamentary elections, and ushered in the country's first-ever democratically elected president. But did Tunisia simply avoid the misfortunes that befell its neighbors, or were there particular features that set the country apart and made it a special case?In Tunisia: An Arab Anomaly, Safwan M. Masri explores the factors that have shaped the country's exceptional experience. He traces Tunisia's history of reform in the realms of education, religion, and women's rights, arguing that the seeds for today's relatively liberal and democratic society were planted as far back as the middle of the nineteenth century. Masri argues that Tunisia stands out not as a model that can be replicated in other Arab countries, but rather as an anomaly, as its history of reformism set it on a separate trajectory from the rest of the region. The narrative explores notions of identity, the relationship between Islam and society, and the hegemonic role of religion in shaping educational, social, and political agendas across the Arab region. Based on interviews with dozens of experts, leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens, and a synthesis of a rich body of knowledge, Masri provides a sensitive, often personal, account that is critical for understanding not only Tunisia but also the broader Arab world.
Al-Muwatta'
Imam Maalik - 2017
It was compiled over a period of forty years to represent the "well-trodden path" of the people of Madinah. Its name also means that it is the book that is "many times agreed-upon" - about whose contents the people of Madinah were unanimously agreed. Its high standing is such that even all of the Fuqaha and Muhadditheen agree upon its authenticity. It is considered to be from the earliest extant collections of Hadeeth that form the basis of Fiqh alongside the Qur'an. It was compiled on the request of the Caliph of that time, Abu Ja'far al-Masur, to produce a standard book that could be promulgated as the law in the Country, due to the increase in Juristic differences. This is what the Caliph requested of Imam Maalik: "O Abu 'Abdullah! Take up the reign of the discipline of Fiqh in your hands. Compile your understanding of every issue in different chapters for a systematic book free from the harshness of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (R), concessions and accommodations of 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (R) and unique views of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (R). your work should exemplify the following principle of the Prophet (S): 'The best issues are those which are balanced'. It should be a compendium of the agreed upon views of the Companions and the elder Imams on the religious and legal issues. Once you have compiled such a work, then we would be able to unite the Muslims in following a single Fiqh work by you. We would then promulgate it in the entire Muslim state and order that nobody act contrary to it." Henceforth, Imam Maalik compiled the Muwatta', keeping before himself the target of removing the juristic differences between the scholars. This became his best-known work and it was the first legal work to incorporate and join Hadeeth and Fiqh together. So it is not merely a collection of Hadeeth; many of the legal precepts it contains are not based on Hadeeth at all. The book covers rituals, rites, customs, traditions, norms and laws of the time of the Prophet (S). It is reported that Imam Maalik selected for inclusion into the Muwatta' just over 1900 narrations, from the 100 000 narrations he had available to him. Over one thousand of Imam Maaliks disciples have transmitted from him. This has resulted in differences in the text in various instances. There are thirty known versions of the work of which the most famous is the one transmitted by Yahya al-Laythi, which is the current one in your hands right now. Islamic Gender Apartheid: Exposing a Veiled War Against Women
Phyllis Chesler - 2017
Phyllis Chesler has been an independent and "politically incorrect" truth teller for nearly half a century. As a powerful advocate for global women's rights, one who witnessed firsthand the stunning injustices of gender apartheid in Afghanistan during the early 1960s, Phyllis Chesler understands the struggles that Muslim women face in their tribal, patriarchal societies. Her power is her voice, and how she clearly, boldly, and unapologetically uses it to denounce oppression no matter where she sees it—and no matter what the consequences of such truth telling are. In Islamic Gender Apartheid: Exposing a Veiled War Against Women, Dr. Chesler writes with journalistic passion and ease. These pieces are meant for a popular audience and bear frontline moral witness to the normalization of misogynist atrocities in our time. This volume covers a variety of topics, including the burqa and face veil, child marriage, polygamy, honor-based violence, FGM, state-sponsored and vigilante acid disfiguring and stoning, forced female suicide killers, and other injustices that have been minimized or denied by Western media and governments. Here you will find portraits of Muslim and ex-Muslim anti-Islamists who are well known in the West, such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Nonie Darwish, and Asra Nomani, and less known, but extraordinary women heroes in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Far East, who have risked death as they defied the bans on trouser-wearing, forced face-veiling, remaining in a violent marriage, choosing their own religion, and facing harassment and death for the right to work outside the home. This volume is a tremendous service to history - a witness at the critical time when women’s rights will either advance worldwide, or the hard-won gains of western women will begin to erode due to the thoughtless mass acceptance of “multiculturalism.” Relevant, thoughtful, informative, Islamic Gender Apartheid: Exposing a Veiled War Against Women is a compelling journalistic account of our perilous times from an award-winning author and scholar.

Forty Narrations Regarding Prayers & Peace Upon The Noble Prophet
Shaykh Muhammad Shakur al-Madayini - 2017
Introductory to Qur'anic Manuscripts مخطوطات القرآن: مدخل لدراسة المخطوطات القديمة
Mohamed Lamsiah - 2017
This scholarly work opens the door to an unknown world for many intellectuals—the world of ancient manuscripts and the codices of the Qur’ān. Through careful, methodical study, these famous manuscripts have now been arranged in a new chronological order based on scientific and technical analysis of calligraphic style, illustrative decorations or motifs, and the materials used in producing them. It includes the identification of scribes who contributed in the codification of these manuscripts and the examination of spelling anomalies among several manuscripts. Explanations regarding the nature and reason for this spelling phenomena and discussion concerning the use of multiple scribes and the effects of these unusual spellings are presented in it. Special emphasis was given to the palimpsest of Ṣan‘ā’ DAM 01-27.1. It shows with definitive evidences the invalidity of the media’s claim on July 22, 2015, that the Birmingham Qur’ānic manuscript, Mingana 1572a, dates to the era of the Rashidun caliphs, perhaps as early as the era of the prophet Muhammad himself
Islamophobia and Racism in America
Erik Love - 2017
As a result, the number of hate crimes committed against Middle Eastern Americans of all origins and religions have increased, and civil rights advocates struggle to confront this striking reality. In Islamophobia and Racism in America, Erik Love draws on in-depth interviews with Middle Eastern American advocates. He shows that, rather than using a well-worn civil rights strategy to advance reforms to protect a community affected by racism, many advocates are choosing to bolster universal civil liberties in the United States more generally, believing that these universal protections are reliable and strong enough to deal with social prejudice. In reality, Love reveals, civil rights protections are surprisingly weak, and do not offer enough avenues for justice, change, and community reassurance in the wake of hate crimes, discrimination, and social exclusion.A unique and timely study, Islamophobia and Racism in America wrestles with the disturbing implications of these findings for the persistence of racism-including Islamophobia-in the twenty-first century. As America becomes a "majority-minority" nation, this strategic shift in American civil rights advocacy signifies challenges in the decades ahead, making Love's findings essential for anyone interested in the future of universal civil rights in the United States.
Wisdom of the Quran
Mhamed Aboulalaa - 2017
It is considered in Islam as the literal word (verbatim) of God and not a human inspired text. Its content covers a wide range of subjects, from the deep philosophical to the practical ones: information about God, arguments about His existence and Unity, the creation of the universe, moral values, family, social life and relations, prescription about the relationship of Man to God, messages about human destiny such as the hereafter and it is worth noting that even the question of the nature of God Himself is addressed many times, for example in the famous verse 24:35 “God is the Light of the heavens and the earth ...”. Clarifications and answers are also given to the question of the purpose of life. The moral values such as freedom, moderation, modesty, justice, mercy, patience, tolerance, sacredness of human life, respect of engagements, honesty, doing good to others, etc., are advocated in a very special way. Usually, moral conclusions are drawn from the relevant experiences and stories reported about people in the past, in particular, Jewish and Christian to which a wide part of the Quran is devoted, while pointing out that the diversity in beliefs reflects a God´s will and therefore tolerance is a fundamental principle in that matter. The Quran defines itself as a book that provides guidance, moral references to men and sense to life and existence. The purpose of this book is, first to present concisely the main lines of the message and parts of the wisdom contained in the Quran, with an attempt to remain objective and factual, and second to provide an introduction that helps for an exhaustive reading of the Text. The topics covered are : the spiritual side (including a detailed chapter on prayer with its goals and power according to the Quran), moral values, the high value given to work, good deeds and learning, conception of the world (including the creation of the universe and Man, etc.), tolerance, a presentation of the structure, style and content of the Quan, in addition to some selected topics. A second part provides some thematic extracts of the Quran that covers several important subjects. It will be shown that the Quran is a highly specific and subtle book that conveys a message of wisdom, tolerance and moral improvement for humankind, to all the people.

Al-Qaida in Afghanistan
Anne Stenersen - 2017
However, little-known are the group's activities within Afghanistan itself, something which Anne Stenersen examines in this book. Using an array of unique primary sources, she presents an alternative narrative of al-Qaida's goals and strategies prior to 9/11. She argues that al-Qaida's actions were not just an ideological expression of religious fanaticism and violent anti-Americanism, but that they were actually far more practical and organised, with a more revolutionary and Middle Eastern-focused agenda than previously thought. Through Stenersen's analysis, we see how al-Qaida employed a dual strategy: with a small section focused on staging international terrorist attacks, but at the same time a larger part dedicated to building a resilient and cohesive organization that would ultimately serve as a vanguard for future Islamist revolutions.

The Promise of Patriarchy: Women and the Nation of Islam
Ula Yvette Taylor - 2017
Black women's experience in the NOI, however, has largely remained on the periphery of scholarship. Here, Ula Taylor documents their struggle to escape the devaluation of black womanhood while also clinging to the empowering promises of patriarchy. Taylor shows how, despite being relegated to a lifestyle that did not encourage working outside of the home, NOI women found freedom in being able to bypass the degrading experiences connected to labor performed largely by working-class black women and in raising and educating their children in racially affirming environments.Telling the stories of women like Clara Poole (wife of Elijah Muhammad) and Burnsteen Sharrieff (secretary to W. D. Fard, founder of the Allah Temple of Islam), Taylor offers a compelling narrative that explains how their decision to join a homegrown, male-controlled Islamic movement was a complicated act of self-preservation and self-love in Jim Crow America.
The Arabic Freud: Psychoanalysis and Islam in Modern Egypt
Omnia El Shakry - 2017
By the late 1950s, Freud's Interpretation of Dreams had been translated into Arabic for an eager Egyptian public. In The Arabic Freud, Omnia El Shakry challenges the notion of a strict divide between psychoanalysis and Islam by tracing how postwar thinkers in Egypt blended psychoanalytic theories with concepts from classical Islamic thought in a creative encounter of ethical engagement.Drawing on scholarly writings as well as popular literature on self-healing, El Shakry provides the first in-depth examination of psychoanalysis in Egypt and reveals how a new science of psychology--or "science of the soul," as it came to be called--was inextricably linked to Islam and mysticism. She explores how Freudian ideas of the unconscious were crucial to the formation of modern discourses of subjectivity in areas as diverse as psychology, Islamic philosophy, and the law. Founding figures of Egyptian psychoanalysis, she shows, debated the temporality of the psyche, mystical states, the sexual drive, and the Oedipus complex, while offering startling insights into the nature of psychic life, ethics, and eros. This provocative and insightful book invites us to rethink the relationship between psychoanalysis and religion in the modern era. Mapping the points of intersection between Islamic discourses and psychoanalytic thought, it illustrates how the Arabic Freud, like psychoanalysis itself, was elaborated across the space of human difference.
How We Won and Lost the War in Afghanistan: Two Years in the Pashtun Homeland
Douglas Grindle - 2017
By placing the reader at the heart of the American counterinsurgency effort, Grindle reveals little-known incidents, including the failure of expensive aid programs to target local needs, the slow throttling of local government as official funds failed to reach the districts, and the United States’ inexplicable failure to empower the Afghan local officials even after they succeeded in bringing the people onto their side. Grindle presents the side of the hard-working Afghans who won the war and expresses what they really thought of the U.S. military and its decisions. Written by a former field officer for the U.S. Agency for International Development, this story of dashed hopes and missed opportunities details how America’s desire to leave the war behind ultimately overshadowed its desire to sustain victory. The Complete Hindu's Guide to Islam (Complete Hindu's Guides Book 1)
Subhodeep Mukhopadhyay - 2017
Most Muslims will willingly agree to this assertion, but Hindus will obstinately deny any such notion and try to look for commonalities where none exist. Anyone who asserts that Hinduism and Islam are same in essence, or that they preach the same message, are either being deceitful, or are simply ignorant. Subhodeep Mukhopadhyay discusses topics like dharma, religion, avatar, prophet, tawhid, jihad, Sufism, Islam's views on different issues like homosexuality and slavery, and key epistemological, ontological and theological aspects of Hinduism and Islam. He explains Islam from the stand-point of dharma and logic, and demonstrates the incompatibility of Hinduism and Islam across personal, societal and cultural levels. He shows with irrefutable evidence, that notions like syncretic culture, national integration and communal harmony are logically meaningless when it comes to Islam in India. Noted educationist Suman Das has very kindly written the foreword to this book and shared his valuable insights.
Dynamics of Muslim Worlds: Regional, Theological, and Missiological Perspectives
Evelyne A. Reisacher - 2017
Due in part to misleading media reports and a lack of interreligious dialogue, a majority of Western Christians view Islam as more prone to violence. The perplexity is compounded by news of violent conflicts involving Muslim communities in various parts of the world. Discussions about Muslims in the media often give the impression that Islam is a single, uniform entity. The reality is that global Islam is a complex and diverse phenomenon, not a monolithic one. Unfortunately, what makes the headlines often shapes Christian mission strategies that are overshadowed, if not controlled, by such reports. The challenge for understanding Islam is further complicated by the fact that an already very diverse Islam across the world stage is fluid and dynamic, with changes motivated as much by Islamic agency from within as by forces impinging "from without." Dynamics of Muslim Worlds brings together leading missiologists, theologians, and historians from the 2016 Missiology Lectures at Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Intercultural Studies to present a nuanced account of contemporary Muslim societies. Edited by Evelyne Reisacher, the contributions to this Missiological Engagements volume explore the changing dynamics of Islam today and how current religious and social climates shape Christian engagement with Muslims. This is a fresh look at a topic of increasing importance in our present global context.

Introduction to Islamic Creed
Rashad Jameer - 2017
Designed to be studied with a teacher or read on one's own, this text will equip the student with sufficient knowledge of the essentials of Muslim theology to be able to distinguish truth from falsehood, orthodox from heterodox, Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a or Sunni Islam from other than it. It is hoped that by including the facing, vocalized Arabic script that 1) students of Sacred Knowledge will be aided in learning the language of the Qur'an, the Prophet a, and the ulama, 2) it will serve as a teaching aid for the ulama when teaching this text to reference the original work and 3) to preserve the actual words of Imam al-Bājūrī.
Aqeedah Wasitiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah - 2017
In Islam, it is the most important factor, as it makes a Muslim what he/she is. One’s state of faith and one’s upright status depends largely on what creed one follows. To be rightly guided and in order to make sure one is on the straight path, it is important to correct one’s Aqeedah. Without it, many of one’s acts maybe meaningless and many would also turn out to be sins in truth. First step in correcting the Aqeedah is understanding and actualizing the Tawheed (Monotheism). Shaikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab’s books namely Kitab at Tawheed, Qawa’id al Arba’a and Usool ath Thalathah are among the best books to begin with. Imam ibn Taymiyyah, a great scholar of Islam from the 13th century has written few wonderful books that address the concept of Aqeedah. The most wonderful among those books are Aqeedah al Wasitiyyah and Aqeedah al Hamawiyyah. The Imam wrote the latter in response to few questions presented to him. The former is a book that deals with the Pure Islamic Creed.

Radical Skin, Moderate Masks: de-Radicalising the Muslim and Racism in Post-Racial Societies
Yassir Morsi - 2017
How can a Muslim speak about politics? And, in what tone can they argue? In today's climate can they -talk back- without being defined as a moderate or radical? And, what do the conditions put on their political choices reveal about liberalism and its deep and historical relationship with racism? This timely work looks at ongoing debates and how they call for Muslims to engage in a -de-radicalisation- of their voice and identities. The author takes his lessons from Fanon and uses them to make sense of his many readings of Said's Orientalism. He reflects on the personal and scholarly difficulty of writing this very book. A messy autoethnography follows. It shows (rather than tells of) the felt demand to use a pleasing -Apollonian- liberalism. This approved language, however, erases a Muslim's ability to talk about the -Dionysian- more Asiatic parts of their faith and politics.
Ottoman Puritanism and Its Discontents: Ahmad Al-Aqhisari and the Qadizadelis
Mustapha Sheikh - 2017
It focuses specifically on developments at the centre of the Ottoman Empire, but also considersboth how they might have been influenced by the wider connections and engagements of learned and holy men and how their influence might have been spread from the Ottoman Empire to South Asia in particular. The immediate focus is on the Qadizadeli movement which flourished in Istanbul from the 1620sto the 1680s and which inveighed against corrupt scholars and heterodox Sufis. The book aims by studying the relationship between Ahmad al-Rumi al-Aqhisari's magisterial Majalis al-abrar and Qadizadeli beliefs to place both author and the movement in an Ottoman, Hanafi, and Sufi milieu. In so doing, it breaks new ground, both in bringing to light al-Aqhisari's writings, and methodologically, in Ottoman studies at least, in employing line-by-line textual comparisons to ascertain the borrowings and influences linking al-Aqhisari to medieval Islamic thinkers such as Ahmad b. Taymiyya and IbnQayyim al-Jawziyya, as well as to several near-contemporaries. Most significantly, the book finally puts to rest the strict dichotomy between Qadizadeli reformism and Sufism, a dichotomy that with too few exceptions continues to be the mainstay of the existing literature.
