Featuring interviews with both the performers and the audience to capture the community on and off stage, the book places personal snapshots alongside professional photography to reveal a unique range of fashions, bands, and scenes. A book about the music, the individual, and the creativity of a worldwide community rather than theoretical definitions of a subculture, Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace considers a subject not often covered by academic books. Whether you were part of the scene or are just fascinated by different modes of expression, this book will transport you to another time and place.

Now a crime reporter for one of the city's largest newspapers, Edward is asked to use his knowledge of illusions and visual trickery to expose the influx of mediums that descended on Philadelphia in the wake of the war. His first target is Mrs. Lucy Collins, a young widow who uses old-fashioned sleight of hand to prey on grieving families. Soon, Edward and Lucy become entwined in the murder of Lenora Grimes Pastor, the city's most highly regarded--and by all accounts, legitimate--medium, who dies mid-seance. With their reputations and livelihoods at risk, Edward and Lucy set out to find the real killer, and in the process unearth a terrifying hive of secrets that reaches well beyond Mrs. Pastor. Blending historical detail with flights of fancy, Things Half in Shadow is a riveting thriller where Medium and The Sixth Sense meet The Alienist--and where nothing is quite as it seems...

The Art of Gothic: Music + Fashion + Alt Culture

Natasha Scharf - 2014
From the staccato postpunk of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the dark rock of the Sisters of Mercy through to the industrial metal of Marilyn Manson and the funereal emotional pop of My Chemical Romance, gothic culture has strong roots in music and continues to adapt and survive. But gothic art is about more than just album covers and ephemera; it's about fashion, book jackets, cinematography, and fine art. Its influence frequently seeps into mainstream culture too. Nowadays, "goth" comes in many shapes, sizes, and even colors, as it encompasses a myriad of subgenres, including cyber, death rock, gothic metal, gothic Lolita, and emo goths. Although each is different, followers are identified by their striking, often theatrical look, music with a hint of melancholy, and the ability to find beauty in morbidity, sometimes even in the macabre. The Art of Gothic is the first heavily illustrated tome to explore the aesthetics of this fascinating style in great detail. Previous books on goth have given a bold overview of the music and culture associated with the genre, but this book goes deeper and hones in on the album art, intricate fashions, fantasy illustrations, and more.

So many former ways of writing, thinking, speaking, singing, loving, being, may be lost to the world, transient as sunset, but I believe that something of their spirit can be stirred again.” (Avalon Brantley)Limited to 100 numbered copies only, 127 pages, color frontispiece.

Enter at Your Own Risk: The End Is the Beginning

Alex ScullyRose Blackthorn - 2014
Or are we? What may be crawling out of the sludge to take our place? What monsters have we created in our labs, factories, and our very own genetic code? In the fourth installment of Firbolg Publishing’s Enter at Your Own Risk series, which pairs Gothic masters such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and H.P. Lovecraft with modern authors of the dark and macabre, the theme is environmental horror. As mankind’s tsunami wave of progress, industrialization, and technology reaches spectacular new heights, sinister things are churning beneath the surface. An unfamiliar stench on the wind. Waters a bit too murky. Soil a bit too red with blood. Progress at a price. A terrible, terrible price. Will we survive? What strange new worlds will emerge from the chaos? With an introduction from Holly Newstein, Enter at Your Own Risk: The End is the Beginning explores both the horror of the end and the hope of new beginnings for our planet and ourselves. THE END IS THE BEGINNING may seem like a collection of horror and science fiction, but the frightening truth is, it might just be our generation's The Prophecies, predictions of what's to come if things don't change. Incurable diseases. Pollution. Out-of-control technologies. Climate change. Extinctions in the name of progress. The stories in this book range from chilling to terrifying, but all of them are thought-provoking in some way, opening our eyes to the dangers of disregarding our environment, of trying to play god. This is Frankenstein on a global scale, and we are the peasants suffering from the arrogance of those who would put greed and progress above common sense. I dare you to read this book before bed and not experience nightmares. Old masters of horror and new ones wait between these pages to open your eyes and infect your hearts with dread. Enjoy their tales, because afterwards you may never look at the world the same again. - JG Faherty, Bram Stoker Award®- and ITW Thriller Award-nominated author of more than 50 short stories and 10 novels/novellas, including CASTLE BY THE SEA, FATAL CONSEQUENCES, and CARNIVAL OF FEAR. "A brilliant blend of the old and new, providing a diverse perspective on a modern problem..." Rob Smales, author of Dead of Winter

Posada: A Century of Skeletons

Helia Bonilla - 2014
Over the last century, Posada's satirical illustrations with their signature -calaveras, - or skeletons, have become synonymous with the imagery of Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations. Often guised in various costumes, such as the Calavera de la Catrina, the -Skull of the Female Dandy, - Posada's Calaveras also satirized the lifestyle of the Mexican upper classes during the reign of Porfirio Diaz. His prints and lithographs utilize a distinctive blend of black, white and middle tones and his works in type metal, zinc and wood make dramatic use of proportion and disproportion. Reflecting on various aspects of Posada's life and work, this volume contains essays by Juan Villoro, Helia Bonilla, Monserrat Gali and Rafael Barajas, as well as a study by Mercurio Lopez that organizes a significant part of Posada's work chronologically, and with regard to the printmaking techniques employed. It also includes two complementary sections: one examining the technical transition from lead to zinc in engraving and a second giving examples of the iconographical sources for Posada's work.Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) studied lithography as a young man and opened a commercial print shop in the 1870s, focusing on advertising, book illustration and broadsides. After the shop was destroyed in a flood, Posada relocated to Mexico City and began moving toward cheaper methods of printmaking. It was there that Posada began contributing his satirical cartoons to news flyers and periodicals, using his adept imagery to communicate with a largely illiterate public. Though he died virtually unknown, Posada has been acknowledged by Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco as the godfather of modern Mexican art.

I can feel the walls of my ivory tower crumbling, and there’s nothing now that can spare me from the darkness. Our city is divided. For centuries my family has warred with the Telyras across the Wall. My heart is growing cold inside me, but it’s still beating. And that’s what scares me the most. I’m putting my trust in all the wrong places … like the handsome lieutenant that stabbed my father’s general in the back. If he’s a traitor, then what am I? But I know it’s time to stop running. Could there still be a happy ending for me? ~~~ My name is Andreas Telyra. For twenty-two years, I’ve been fighting a war that isn’t mine, chained to this inherited destiny by a crown I can’t remove. My heart is black and charred inside me, and I feel a darkness crawling through my veins. Now my only hope is Roselia Loren, the daughter of my lifelong nemesis. Maybe she’s different. More likely she’s as savage as the rest of her cursed line. And even she isn’t? I’ve taken those she loves from her forever. She has grown up to stories of my brutality—most of them true. I’m so close to giving up, to relinquishing the last shred of my humanity. If I do, I’m pretty sure the next casualty will be someone close to me. There are no happy endings for me. But I have to try. The light in me is dying. And if Roselia Loren doesn’t listen … I’m damned.

Whately House is the sort of place Stuart and Johanna have always dreamed of owning, but from the moment of their arrival, the town and the surrounding woods fill Stuart with an overwhelming sense of dread. Plagued by recurring nightmares that leave him drained of vitality, Stuart is further confounded by the bountiful female population of Putnam Woods. Every woman and girl of child bearing age exists in a state of perpetual pregnancy – a phenomena made all the more mysterious by the noticeably sparse male population. In an attempt to unravel the myriad secrets of Putnam Woods, Stuart must confront long buried fear in the dark recesses of his mind. But can he learn the secret of Putnam Woods without losing his already tenuous grip on reality? Reminiscent of the weird, gothic tales of the early twentieth century, The Women of Putnam Woods is a 35,000 word novella of quietly mounting horror.

Blood Paternal (Origins of Blood Book 1)

Janet Joyce Holden - 2014
His letter of intent is abrupt, its reasoning unclear, and consequently his descendants choose to ignore the threat, and assume their beloved creator has simply gone mad. Until the slaughter begins. Unprepared and caught by surprise, the survivors are forced to leave their sanctuaries and forge new, hasty alliances in a desperate bid to protect themselves. But can they stop their revered ancestor? And whom can they trust? In the struggle to survive, Gilles and Mina are joined by Mark, an enigmatic and vengeful newcomer, who was tortured and left for dead by one of their society's powerful Elders. Subsequent events suggest the three have been brought together for a purpose, but one that proves elusive. But when loved ones are threatened, and companions begin to die, enemies must become friends, and for Mark in particular, that might also include the man who brutally murdered him. *** Blood Paternal is a modern vampire novel which successfully blends the familiar gothic angst and melancholy of the classic tales with a slickness and style that conjures images reminiscent of The Matrix, Inception and Equilibrium. Holden’s vampires bite but they also lock and load. -- Greg James. Ginger Nuts Of Horror "Holden creates a vampiric demimonde that is as uncompromising as it is beautiful, that confronts its denizens with the consequences of power while offering the indulgence of every dark desire. Human life is the first casualty, but definitely not the last." Kyla Lee Ward, author of Prismatic, and The Land of Bad Dreams.

Glimmerglass

Marly Youmans - 2014
The failed painter was lured by the gatehouse with its seven doors, the lake with its tower, and the magical air of a place that couldn't quite decide whether it was fictional, mythic, or real. The gatehouse should have been a first clue that she was on a journey, and soon she begins to glimpse and then to pursue a figure in the woods near her house, convinced she has seen the Muse. As she reclaims her calling as a painter and moves deeper into the uncanny world of Cooper Patent, Cynthia finds herself at the heart of a labyrinth of mystery. She will have to navigate its dream depths and secrets, brilliant or dark, locked behind a door that opens into the earth. Youmans has scaled the tree of books and plucked twigs of gothic romance, ghost tale, medieval dream vision, and belated coming-of-age story, with a leaf or two from the novel of manners and fantasy.

Ann Radcliffe, Romanticism and the Gothic

Dale Townshend - 2014
While drawing upon, consolidating and enriching the critical impulses reflected in Radcliffe scholarship to date, this collection of essays, composed by a range of renowned scholars of the Romantic period, also foregrounds the hitherto neglected aspects of the author's work. Radcliffe's relations to Romantic-era travel writing; the complex political ideologies that lie behind her historiographic endeavours; her poetry and its relation to institutionalised forms of Romanticism; and her literary connections to eighteenth-century women's writing are all examined in this collection. Offering fresh considerations of the well-known Gothic fictions and extending the appreciation of Radcliffe in new critical directions, the collection reappraises Radcliffe's full oeuvre within the wider literary and political contexts of her time.
