How Finance Works: The HBR Guide to Thinking Smart about the Numbers

Mihir Desai - 2019

The Rebel Allocator

Jacob Taylor - 2019
How could what you spend money on inside a business NOT be of utmost importance?I looked for a business person’s guide to effective capital allocation for years. I thought, “What a nice gift to send to the CEOs of my portfolio companies!” as visions of outsized returns danced in my head. To my dismay, the search came up dry. I decided I’d have to write my own.I started at the individual customer transaction level and built all the way up to M&A, share buybacks, and beyond. To keep from boring you, I wrapped the lessons in a coming-of-age story of a college grad crossing paths with a wealthy Midwesterner. Imagine if The Karate Kid‘s Mr. Miyagi was modeled after a certain well-known Oracle. (OK, it’s not The Brothers Karamazov, but I’m not the most original guy.)This book is for you if:** You’re a business decision-maker who was never taught good capital allocation and you’re wondering what you’re missing. These lessons apply to small business people and Fortune 100 titans, and everyone in between. It doesn’t matter if you’re public or private, this book will help.** You’re building or advising start-ups. Today’s disrupter is tomorrow’s capital allocator. Learn it early and save yourself a ton of headache.** You’re an investor who appreciates the studies finding good capital allocators outperform the S&P 500 by 20x (no joke), and you want an easy way to help management and board members make better decisions. This book will also aid you in spotting those doing capital allocation right–such a huge advantage. (This was my original itch I wanted scratched. Part of me wanted to keep this book to myself and only send it to the management teams in my portfolio.)** You’re fresh out of school and want to learn the good, and sometimes bad, sides of business. Or you might want to kindle an appreciation for the wonders of capitalism. (Please don’t send a copy of this book to Bernie Sanders.)And perhaps most importantly, your journey will be less painful when mixed with a splash of humor and movie-like pacing. Even if you’re like me and read non-fiction almost exclusively, you’re going to be glad you took a chance on this one. This is fiction for the non-fiction reader. Yours in improving capital allocation,Jake

Trading: Technical Analysis Masterclass: Master the financial markets

Rolf Schlotmann - 2019
This has been my daily experience for the past decade and even traders who have tried everything for years without success can make their first profits if the art of trading is explained to them in the right way. However, the keyword “in the right way” is important here. This book focuses on technical analysis, explanation and interpretation of price movements and chart patterns as well as on learning effective, ready-to-use trading strategies. However, it is important to go beyond the usual technical analysis, and to analyze the behavior of traders based on psychological factors and phenomena of mass psychology as well. The price movements on the international financial markets arise because millions of people interact with each other every day. Buying and selling decisions are influenced by emotions and human behavioral patterns. Whether we are looking at a speculator from China 200 years ago, a Wall Street pit trader from New York 80 years ago or a modern-day "Joe Bloggs trader”, trading from his/her smartphone – the human components, i.e. emotions and instincts, hardly differ. Greed, fear, uncertainty and the willingness to take risks have determined human actions for millennia and, of course, also how people have maneuvered their money around the world's markets for centuries. Those who learn to read the buyer and seller interaction from the charts will be able to read and handle any price movement. This is true because all price charts follow universal and timeless rules that can be successfully interpreted with the help of effective technical analysis. Over the years, more than one million visitors have already searched for information about trading on our website www.tradeciety.com. Every day, traders ask us how they can understand technical analysis and trading in a better manner. This book is a result of the motivation to answer these questions collectively. It is the book I would have wished for at the beginning of my trading career over 15 years ago. The first section of this book provides comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals and individual components of technical analysis and price analysis. The second section focuses on the most important trading patterns as well as the correct interpretation of chart formations. We will explore potential entry signal points and trading strategies so that traders can now already make sense of their own charts with confidence. The third and final section focuses on developing a customized trading strategy. In addition to an insight into important psychological trading concepts, traders will get numerous practical tips to ensure that they handle their trading professionally at the end of this book. The goal of this book is it to enable the reader to look behind the price movements and understand why prices rise and fall, how buyers and sellers interact and thus to make effective trading decisions. The comprehensive and step-by-step knowledge of technical analysis ultimately makes it possible to interpret any chart situation and, thus, hopefully, become an independent trader.

It was also about finding liberation and salvation." – ForbesDan details in a non-technical and non-preachy way how the idea of blockchain-based decentralization has convinced a generation of dreamers, misfits and gamblers to too often bet more than they can afford to lose. He illustrates how public blockchains like Ethereum could disrupt the nature of work itself in the coming years, upending stultifying centralized corporations in favor of "trust machines" and peer-to-peer cooperation. In the process, readers take a thrilling ride with Dan on a turbocharged adventure through crypto, not knowing if he will make history or lose everything he holds dear.

Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest

Charles Schwab - 2019
Schwab opens up about his dyslexia, how he worked around and ultimately embraced it, and the challenges he faced when, a year into his grand experiment in discounted stock trading, living in a small apartment in Sausalito with his wife Helen and new baby, he carried a six-figure debt and pocketsful of personal loans. As it turned out, customers flocked to Schwab, his small team scrambling with scarce resources and no roadmap to manage the company's growth. He recounts Schwab's game-changing sale to Bank of America - and how, in the end, the merger almost doomed his organization. We learn about the clever and timely leveraged buyout he crafted to regain independence; the crushing stock market collapse of 1987 just weeks after the company had gone public; the dot-com meltdown of 2000 and its reverberating aftermath of economic stagnation, layoffs and the company's eventual reinvention; and how the company's focus on managing risk protected it and its clients during the financial crisis in 2008, propelling its growth. A remarkable story of a company succeeding by challenging norms and conventions through decades of change, Invested also offers unique insights and lifelong principles Schwab for readers - the values that he has lived and worked by and have made him one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time. Today, his eponymous company is one of the leading financial services firms in the world, with over 3 trillion dollars in client assets.

Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement (The Retirement Researcher Guide Series Book 3)

Wade Pfau - 2019
The probability-based approach is generally better understood by the public. It advocates using an aggressive investment portfolio with a large allocation to stocks to meet retirement goals. My earlier book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Strategies provides an extensive investigation of probability-based approaches. But this investments-only attitude is not the optimal way to build a retirement income plan. There are pitfalls in retirement that we are less familiar with during the accumulation years. The nature of risk changes. Longevity risk is the possibility of living longer than planned, which could mean not having resources to maintain the retiree’s standard of living. And once retirement distributions begin, market downturns in the early years can disproportionately harm retirement sustainability. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it acts to amplify the impacts of market volatility in retirement. Traditional wealth management is not equipped to handle these new risks in a fulfilling way. More assets are required to cover spending goals over a possibly costly retirement triggered by a long life and poor market returns. And yet, there is no assurance that assets will be sufficient. For retirees who are worried about outliving their wealth, probability-based strategies can become excessively conservative and stressful. This book focuses on the other option: safety-first retirement planning. Safety-first advocates support a more bifurcated approach to building retirement income plans that integrates insurance with investments, providing lifetime income protections to cover spending. With risk pooling through insurance, retirees effectively pay an insurance premium that will provide a benefit to support spending in otherwise costly retirements that could deplete an unprotected investment portfolio. Insurance companies can pool sequence and longevity risks across a large base of retirees, much like a traditional defined-benefit company pension plan or Social Security, allowing for retirement spending that is more closely aligned with averages. When bonds are replaced with insurance-based risk pooling assets, retirees can improve the odds of meeting their spending goals while also supporting more legacy at the end of life, especially in the event of a longer-than-average retirement. We walk through this thought process and logic in steps, investigating three basic ways to fund a retirement spending goal: with bonds, with a diversified investment portfolio, and with risk pooling through annuities and life insurance. We consider the potential role for different types of annuities including simple income annuities, variable annuities, and fixed index annuities. I explain how different annuities work and how readers can evaluate them. We also examine the potential for whole life insurance to contribute to a retirement income plan. When we properly consider the range of risks introduced after retirement, I conclude that the integrated strategies preferred by safety-first advocates support more efficient retirement outcomes. Safety-first retirement planning helps to meet financial goals with less worry. This book explains how to evaluate different insurance options and implement these solutions into an integrated retirement plan.

John Stepek - 2019

Tim Lee - 2019
But none has revealed just how significant a role it plays in the global economy--until now.A groundbreaking book sure to leave its mark in the canon of investing literature, The Rise of Carry explains how carry trading has virtually shaped the global economic picture--one of decaying economic growth, recurring crises, wealth disparity, and, in too many places, social and political upheaval. The authors explain how carry trades work--particularly in the currency and stock markets--and provide a compelling case for how carry trades have come to dominate the entire global business cycle. They provide thorough analyses of critical but often overlooked topics and issues, including:-The active role stock prices play in causing recessions--as opposed to the common belief that recessions cause price crashes-The real driving force behind financial asset prices-The ways that carry, volatility selling, leverage, liquidity, and profitability affect the business cycle-How positive returns to carry over time are related to market volatility--and how central bank policies have supercharged these returnsSimply put, carry trading is now the primary determinant of the global business cycle--a pattern of long, steady but unspectacular expansions punctuated by catastrophic crises. The Rise of Carry provides foundational knowledge and expert insights you need to protect yourself from what have come to be common market upheavals--as well as the next major crisis.

Out of the Shadows: The New Merchants of Grain

Jonathan Kingsman - 2019
In the 40 years since Dan’s book was published the grain markets have changed almost beyond recognition. So too have the merchants of grain. Once shadowy figures, grain merchants have now come out of the shadows. Almost everything that you eat or drink today will contain something bought, stored, transported, processed, shipped, distributed or sold by one of the seven giants of the agricultural supply chain. The media often refers to them as the ABCD group of international grain-trading companies, with ABCD standing for ADM, Bunge, Cargill and Dreyfus. The acronym, though, ignores the other three giants of the food supply: Glencore, COFCO International and Wilmar. Together, they handle 50 percent of the international trade in grain and oilseeds. In this book’s series of exclusive and unprecedented interviews, CEOs and senior traders from these seven giants describe in their own words how the agricultural markets are changing, and how they are adapting to those changes. Accompanying text explains how grain trading works, what grain traders do, and the journey that your food takes before arriving on your plate. This is the inside story of the grain market and of the seven companies at the centre of the world’s food supply.

Job Optional*: *The science of retiring with confidence; the art of living with purpose.

Casey Weade - 2019
It offers both a primer to the financial world as well as a step-by-step guide to planning your own retirement. It is written in terms that a newcomer to investing can understand while providing all the pertinent information necessary to make informed financial decisions. It acts as a primer that takes a complicated topic and makes it accessible, while not diluting the information.Interestingly, for a book about money, the first recommended step in financial planning has nothing to do with the stock market or annuities, but the need for an individual to have a life purpose. One's goal should be to identify this purpose and to create a plan set out to organize your assets in such a way to most efficiently accomplish that end. Once this has been decided, the next step is into the world of finance. This begins with an analysis of today's investment risks. Once the risks are understood, specific strategies to overcome them are determined. A plan is created that ends with a final, written product. To do this, requires a solid understanding of the financial world and reading Job Optional makes this possible. Five chapters deal specifically with financial concepts, strategies, and terms, ordered as an organized outline to the logical steps in retirement planning. These are: purpose-based asset allocation, liquidity planning, income planning, growth planning, and estate planning. The book is a wealth of information as it describes the many elements and strategies of financial planning. Look here to learn about such things as the 4-percent withdrawal rule; strategies for interest-only, real-income, and guaranteed lifetime income; advice on watching your expenses; information on maximizing your legacy that includes basic IRA strategies; a list of basic documents such as powers of attorney and living wills; what to consider when choosing -- or breaking up with -- a financial advisor. The information is in-depth, detailed, and complete. In places, and this is a strong point as this makes abstract financial concepts real and understandable and adds interest and color. The book takes a friendly, conversational, tone as the investment information is intertwined with stories taken from the author's life, his parents' lives, and his clients. Retirement brings with it its own set of life changes, challenges, and situations. The sharing of these stories makes financial planning real. It also underscores the book's message that success isn't money, but purposeful living, and that good financial planning will allow you to achieve this goal and be a success on your own terms.

A Brief History of Doom: Two Hundred Years of Financial Crises

Richard Vague - 2019
Building on insights gleaned from many years of work in the banking industry and drawing on a vast trove of data, Richard Vague argues that such crises follow a pattern that makes them both predictable and avoidable.A Brief History of Doom examines a series of major crises over the past 200 years in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan, and China--including the Great Depression and the economic meltdown of 2008. Vague demonstrates that the over-accumulation of private debt does a better job than any other variable of explaining and predicting financial crises. In a series of clear and gripping chapters, he shows that in each case the rapid growth of loans produced widespread overcapacity, which then led to the spread of bad loans and bank failures. This cycle, according to Vague, is the essence of financial crises and the script they invariably follow. The story of financial crisis is fundamentally the story of private debt and runaway lending. Convinced that we have it within our power to break the cycle, Vague provides the tools to enable politicians, bankers, and private citizens to recognize and respond to the danger signs before it begins again.

Things The Rich Don't Want You To Know: A guidebook for people who are worth over $1,000,000

Noah Kagan - 2019
It’s exactly the book I wish I had a few years ago. When I made my first million dollars, I waited around for an award ceremony that never happened. At that point I started looking around for books, websites, podcasts, or videos to shed light on what do “rich” people do to reduce their taxable income use their money to make even more, and how to save more money now that I’m earning a lot more. But I was shocked to find that there was nothing around. There were a shit ton of stories about how to start a business, how to make $1,000 a month, seven habits for manifesting money—but what about the guys and girls who actually have a little bit? Stumped, I bent over and paid my taxes like a good citizen. But I knew the super rich understood something I didn’t. They had the “bible” of rich shit you do when you have bookoo bucks. I wanted in.Here are a few examples of what they were doing:- Donald Trump has saved $100 million+ from doing land easements- Most yacht owners expense 50%+ or more from their boat by moving into a charter- Mitt Romney used the IDGT to minimize his $100 million estate taxes. How do they do it? Answering that question became my mission: to uncover what super rich people are doing that us commoners don’t know about, so we can take power back for ourselves. But there wasn’t a central repository of this knowledge. So many financial advisors were poor; they gave out information, but hardly any of them followed those strategies themselves. Furthermore, when they did give me advice or when I found suggestions in blog posts, it was unclear how these things actually worked. So I kept asking around to find out what others they did, and took notes. I’ve interviewed lots of millionaires, wealth managers, and tax strategists to figure out what to do with my own money, and here I’m sharing it with you. Everything in this book is a validated strategy for high earners that I’ve personally used or talked with someone directly who’s done it for themself.

Taking the Floor: Models, Morals, and Management in a Wall Street Trading Room

Daniel Beunza - 2019
Based on extensive research in a Wall Street derivatives-trading room, Taking the Floor considers how the culture of financial organizations might change in order for them to remain healthy, even in times of crises. In particular, Daniel Beunza explores how the extensive use of financial models and trading technologies over the recent decades has exerted a far-ranging and troubling influence on Wall Street. How have models reshaped financial markets? How have models altered moral behavior in organizations?Beunza takes readers behind the scenes in a bank unit that, within its firm, is widely perceived to be "a class act," and he considers how this trading room unit might serve as a blueprint solution for the ills of Wall Street's unsustainable culture. Beunza demonstrates that the integration of traders across desks reduces the danger of blind spots created by models. Warning against the risk of moral disengagement posed by the use of models, he also contends that such disengagement could be avoided by instituting moral norms and social relations.Providing a unique perspective on a complex subject, Taking the Floor profiles what an effective, responsible trading room can and should look like.

Private Debt: Opportunities in Corporate Direct Lending

Stephen W Nesbitt - 2019
Traditionally a niche asset class pre-crisis, corporate direct lending has become an increasingly important allocation for institutional investors--assets managed by Business Development Company structures, which represent 25% of the asset class, have experienced over 600% growth since 2008 to become a $91 billion market. Middle market direct lending has traditionally been relegated to commercial banks, but onerous Dodd-Frank regulation has opened the opportunity for private asset managers to replace banks as corporate lenders; as direct loans have thus far escaped the low rates that decimate yield, this asset class has become an increasingly attractive option for institutional and retail investors. This book dissects direct loans as a class, providing the critical background information needed in order to work effectively with these assets.Understand direct lending as an asset class, and the different types of loans available Examine the opportunities, potential risks, and historical yield Delve into various loan investment vehicles, including the Business Development Company structure Learn how to structure a direct loan portfolio, and where it fits within your total portfolio The rapid rise of direct lending left a knowledge gap surrounding these nontraditional assets, leaving many investors ill-equipped to take full advantage of ever-increasing growth. This book provides a uniquely comprehensive guide to corporate direct lending, acting as both crash course and desk reference to facilitate smart investment decision making.

Will You Be Richer or Poorer?: Profit, Power and A.I. in a Traumatized World

Charles Hugh Smith - 2019
Why?One reason is our economy doesn’t even measure many kinds of wealth and ignores many costs. Clearly, clean air and water, good health and civil liberties are valuable, but you won’t find these on any balance sheet. Our system’s incentives are to maximize short-term financial profits, and everything else is treated as if it doesn’t exist. This book tackles three critical questions: 1. What if everything we don’t measure is worth more than financial wealth? Our obsession with financial capital is blinding us to a traumatizing global decline in other forms of wealth. 2. Will artificial intelligence (A.I.) make us all richer? What if A.I. will only enrich the few who own the platforms and technology?3. Is our economic model dooming us? We’re told we all benefit as the super-rich get even richer, but what if the status quo only benefits those in power at the expense of everyone else—and our planet? Though we may not be politically powerful, we are far from powerless. This book will help you identify the things that truly matter, and accumulate capital that benefits you and your family—and our planet.

In God We Trust: Morally Responsible Investing

George P. Schwartz - 2019
prosperity has returned in 2018, as capitalism has again been unleashed. The author says, "What a relief after eight years of economic stagnation and government over-regulation." Oddly, as the U.S. economy has benefited from pro-growth policies, like tax rate cuts and deregulation, there exists a rising tide of sympathy for socialism among leftist politicians and young people. This timeless divide between capitalism and socialism is explored within the context of the economic and moral ramifications for society in general and long-term investors, specifically. Readers with historical perspective will appreciate the logic of what should be obvious, i.e. that socialism has never worked anywhere on earth. Or aptly put by President Ronald Reagan, "Socialism can only work in two places, heaven where they don't need it, and hell where they already have it." This book is about participating in the capital markets while avoiding morally objectionable businesses. As a lover of the free enterprise system and a portfolio manager,  George Schwartz chronicles how Morally Responsible Investing is helping long-term investors put their money to work in accordance with their moral beliefs. His firm manages Ave Maria Mutual Funds, which were founded in 2001. These pro-life and pro-family mutual funds have attracted over 100,000 shareholders, who have invested more than $2.2 billion in five separate award-winning mutual funds.

Trading with leverage is inherently dangerous. With leverage, losses and costs – the two great killers for traders – are magnified. This does not mean leverage must be avoided altogether, but it does mean that it needs to be used safely. A trading system can be employed to tackle those twin dangers of serious losses and high costs. The trading systems introduced in this book are simple and carefully designed to use the correct amount of leverage and trade at a suitable frequency. Robert shows how to trade a simple Starter System on its own, on a single instrument and with a single rule for opening positions. He then moves on to show how the Starter System can be adapted, as you gain experience and confidence. The system can be diversified into multiple instruments and new trading rules can be added. For those who wish to go further still, advice on making more complex improvements is included: how to develop your own trading systems, and how to combine a system with your own human judgement, using an approach Robert calls Semi-Automatic Trading. For those trading with leverage, looking for a way to take a controlled approach and manage risk, a properly designed trading system is the answer. The Market Loves You: Why You Should Love It Back

Jeffrey Tucker - 2019
The Market Loves You – Jeffrey Tucker’s latest collection of evocative observations of everyday products, services, and life in the market – rejects this characterization. He argues that benevolence characterizes trading relationships, entrepreneurship, work contracts, and the effects of decisions by market players. These are a civilizing, evenly lovely, institutions that embed complex human relationships that extend all over the world, involving potentially billions of people.Every unforced decision to trade represents a spark of insight, a hope for a better future, and the instantiation of a human relationship that affirms the dignity of everyone involved, he writes. Sometimes that relationship is personal; it is even more awesome to consider the enormously complex impersonal relationships that make up the vast global networks of exchange that make our lives wonderful. We take the results for granted because they are so much part of our daily experience. If they suddenly went missing, any aspect of what we depend on to live a better life, we would experience demoralization and even devastation. The lights go out. The gas stations close. The shelves are empty. The doctors run out of medicine. There is no one to fix the plumbing, no one to repair the heater, no one to do the surgery on my heart. This is a world that is less lovely than the world of plenty we’ve come to expect. The institutional setting in which human relationships become real in our lives is the market. This does not entail reducing human life to dollars and cents. It is about the recognition that our value as human beings is bound up with our associations with others, our trading relationships, and the opportunities we have to value and be valued by others. Looked at this way, the moral aesthetic of the market is lovely. It fosters love. It needs love.

American Bonds: How Credit Markets Shaped a Nation

Sarah L. Quinn - 2019
From the 1780s, when a watershed national land credit policy was established, to the postwar foundations of our current housing finance system, American Bonds examines the evolution of securitization and federal credit programs. Sarah Quinn shows that since the Westward expansion, the U.S. government has used financial markets to manage America's complex social divides, and politicians and officials across the political spectrum have turned to land sales, home ownership, and credit to provide economic opportunity without the appearance of market intervention or direct wealth redistribution.Highly technical systems, securitization, and credit programs have been fundamental to how Americans determined what they could and should owe one another. Over time, government officials embraced credit as a political tool that allowed them to navigate an increasingly complex and fractured political system, affirming the government's role as a consequential and creative market participant. Neither intermittent nor marginal, credit programs supported the growth of powerful industries, from railroads and farms to housing and finance; have been used for disaster relief, foreign policy, and military efforts; and were promoters of amortized mortgages, lending abroad, venture capital investment, and mortgage securitization.Illuminating America's market-heavy social policies, American Bonds illustrates how political institutions became involved in the nation's lending practices.
