Teaching All Nations: Interrogating the Matthean Great Commission

Mitzi J. Smith - 2014
The linchpin role played in those efforts by the Great Commissionthe risen Christs command to go into all the world and teach all nationshas more often been observed than analyzed, however. With the rise of European colonialism, the Great Commission was suddenly taken up with an eschatological urgency, often explicit in the founding statements of missionary societies; the differentiation of teachers and nations waiting to be taught proved a ready-made sacred sanction for the racialized and androcentric logics of conquest and civilization.

G. Campbell Morgan - 2014
It may be that you do not yet have that burden on your heart, or perhaps eternity itself is not yet a reality to you. Or, perhaps you have that burden, but feel like there are no open doors for ministry available to you. Your church may be cold and currently making no great impact in your community. No matter your current circumstance, only believe that the same One who commissions His people for His work also has sufficient resources to enable the work to move forward. Only believe that as you dig into the Scriptures, perhaps with the help of this book, which serves as a biblical guide, that the One who cares most for this work can also put that same burden and love into the hearts of you and your church. While this book was originally written more than one hundred years ago, it appears that it was written for such a time as this. The author first challenges the reader regarding the need. Then he addresses the church and how to engage your available help. Specifics from inviting your community to your evangelistic events, to how to conduct successful evangelism meetings, are all covered in this invaluable volume. Learn what evangelism is, what it should look like, and how to obtain the power to perform it, using this updated edition of a timeless classic to spur you forward. About the Author George Campbell Morgan was born in Tetbury, England, on December 9, 1893. At the young age of thirteen, Morgan began preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Morgan and his wife, Annie, had four boys and three girls. His four sons followed him into the ministry. Morgan visited the United States for the first time in 1896, the first of fifty-four times he crossed the Atlantic to preach and teach. In 1897, Morgan accepted a pastorate in London, where he often traveled as a preacher and was involved in the London Missionary Society. After the death of D. L. Moody in 1899, Morgan assumed the position of director of the Northfield Bible Conference in Massachusetts. After five successful years in this capacity, in 1904 he returned to England and became pastor of Westminster Chapel, London, where he served for the next thirteen years, from 1904 to 1917. Thousands of people attended his services and weekly Friday night Bible classes. He had no formal training for the ministry, but his devotion to studying the Bible made him one of the leading Bible teachers of his day. In 1902, Chicago Theological Seminary conferred on him an honorary doctor of divinity degree. Although he did not have the privilege of studying in a seminary or a Bible college, he has written books that are used in seminaries and Bible colleges all over the world. Morgan died on May 16, 1945, at the age of eighty-one.

Methodist Evangelism, American Salvation: The Home Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1860-1920

Mark R. Teasdale - 2014
They also have the capacity to prompt unspeakable acts of evil. The ideas of "America" and "the gospel" have been used for both. The situation was no different when the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) brought these two ideas together in its evangelistic work from 1860 to 1920, including during the Civil War and the First World War. Methodist Evangelism, American Salvation traces the MEC's home missions among African Americans and whites in the South; among Native Americans, Mexicans, and white settlers in the West; and among newly arrived immigrants, their children, the poor, and the rich in the East's burgeoning cities. It shows the innovative and courageous work of the MEC to improve the quality of life for these most marginalized populations in the United States. It also shows the fear the MEC had that these populations would overthrow American civilization if they did not conform to the values held by white, middle-class, native-born Americans. "Teasdale employs careful historical analysis while framing the issues of the time with a pastorally informed eye, balancing difficult yet poignant material. This text is a welcome and significant contribution." --Laceye Warner, Executive Vice Dean, Duke University Divinity School, North Carolina "Teasdale provides a sharply focused and well-nuanced analysis of the evangelistic mission of Methodism in one of its most critical ages of growth. At a time when the interface of Christianity and culture figures so prominently on the contemporary landscape, this study of developments in the nineteenth century provides important lessons from which we can learn. Many will find this book helpful in the quest to more fully understand American religious culture." --Paul W. Chilcote, Academic Dean, Professor of Historical Theology and Wesleyan Studies, Ashland Theological Seminary, Ohio Mark R. Teasdale is the E. Stanley Jones Assistant Professor of Evangelism and the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He is also an elder in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church.

Out of Commission: Getting Every Christian Back to the Great Commission

Paul Chappell - 2014
You’d be hard pressed to meet a dedicated Christian who doesn’t say the greatest work on Earth is evangelization. But, while all of us give lip service to evangelizing and discipling, the effect of our labor seems woefully behind. Somewhere there is a disconnect between the priorities we claim and the actions we practice. Something is broken—or maybe just out of commission. This book is an invitation to “look under the hood”—to examine why we don’t witness for Christ as we should, why our local churches are neglecting soulwinning and discipleship, and how we can get back to making Christ’s last command our first priority. Written for every Christian who desires to obey the Great Commission of Christ, this comprehensive volume is motivational and practical, diagnostic and corrective. Whether you are new to evangelism or an experienced soulwinner, Out of Commission will challenge and equip you to share your faith and more effectively reach your community for Christ.

The Fake Commission

John M. Strohman - 2014
We live in a day where felt-needs are elevated over Biblical theology among many Christians, ministries and churches. The purpose of this book is to challenge and encourage the serious Christian and the church. Without a correct focus on evangelism and missions, one risks a life of self-deception regarding what real Christian service is. This book does not belabor imprecise terms like “balance” or “moderation” when discussing evangelism and good works – it seeks to be Biblical. When our lives are done, it is the truly Spirit-led obedient believer who will hear: “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21).

Disciplism - Reimagining evangelism through the lens of discipleship
