Journey to Mars: What Our Journey To the Red Planet Might Look Like ?

Peter Thiel - 2019
Putting people into places and situations unprecedented in history is stirred the imagination while the human experience was expanding and redefining. Yet, space exploration compels humans to confront a hostile environment of cosmic radiations, radical changes in the gravity and magnetic fields, as well as social isolation. Therefore, any space traveller is submitted to relevant health-related threats. In the twenty-first century, human space flight is poised to continue, but it will enjoy the ongoing developments in science and technology. It will become more networked, more global, and more oriented toward primary goals. A novel international human space flight policy could help achieve these objectives by clarifying the rationale, the ethics of acceptable risk, the role of remote presence, and the need for balance between funding and ambition to justify the risk of human lives. In order to address such a challenge, a preliminary careful survey of the available scientific data is mandatory to set forth adequate countermeasures. Envisaged solutions should provide a sound and technically feasible approach for counteracting microgravity and cosmic rays effects, which represent the main health risk for space crews. This objective must necessarily be sustained by national/international space agencies, which would coordinate their common efforts into a defined international spaceflight program.

Erased: The Untold Story of the Panama Canal

Marixa Lasso - 2019
Sleuth and scholar Marixa Lasso recounts how the canal's American builders displaced 40,000 residents and erased entire towns in the guise of bringing modernity to the tropics. The Panama Canal set a new course for the modern development of Central America. Cutting a convenient path from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans, it hastened the currents of trade and migration that were already reshaping the Western hemisphere. Yet the waterway was built at considerable cost to a way of life that had characterized the region for centuries. In Erased, Marixa Lasso recovers the history of the Panamanian cities and towns that once formed the backbone of the republic.Drawing on vast and previously untapped archival sources and personal recollections, Lasso describes the canal's displacement of peasants, homeowners, and shop owners, and chronicles the destruction of a centuries-old commercial culture and environment. On completion of the canal, the United States engineered a tropical idyll to replace the lost cities and towns--a space miraculously cleansed of poverty, unemployment, and people--which served as a convenient backdrop to the manicured suburbs built exclusively for Americans. By restoring the sounds, sights, and stories of a world wiped clean by U.S. commerce and political ambition, Lasso compellingly pushes back against a triumphalist narrative that erases the contribution of Latin America to its own history.

No-Nonsense Classical Mechanics: A Student-Friendly Introduction

Jakob Schwichtenberg - 2019
Learn to describe classical mechanics mathematically — Understand the meaning and origin of the most important equations: Newton's second law, the Euler-Lagrange equation and Hamilton's equations. Master the most important classical mechanics systems — Read fully annotated, step-by-step calculations and understand the general algorithm we use to describe them. Get an understanding you can be proud of — Learn about beautiful and deep insights like Noether's theorem or Liouville's theorem and how classical mechanics emerges in a proper limit of special relativity, quantum mechanics and general relativity. No-Nonsense Classical Mechanics is the most student-friendly book on classical nechanics ever written. Here’s why. First of all, it's is nothing like a formal university lecture.  Instead, it’s like a casual conservation with a more experienced student. This also means that nothing is assumed to be “obvious” or “easy to see”. Each chapter, each section, and each page focuses solely on the goal to help you understand. Nothing is introduced without a thorough motivation and it is always clear where each equation comes from. The book contains no fluff since unnecessary content quickly leads to confusion. Instead, it ruthlessly focuses on the fundamentals and makes sure you’ll understand them in detail. The primary focus on the readers’ needs is also visible in dozens of small features that you won’t find in any other textbook In total, the book contains more than 100 illustrations that help you understand the most important concepts visually. In each chapter, you’ll find fully annotated equations and calculations are done carefully step-by-step. This makes it much easier to understand what’s going on in. Whenever a concept is used that was already introduced previously there is a short sidenote that reminds you where it was first introduced and often recites the main points. In addition, there are summaries at the beginning of each chapter that make sure you won’t get lost.

Introduction to Solution Architecture

Alan McSweeney - 2019
The solution exists to operate business processes in order to achieve business objectives, meet a business need and deliver business value. Solution architecture is concerned with engaging with the originating business function looking for the solution to create a solution vision and design a solution that meet their needs, subject to a range of constraints such as cost and affordability, time to deliver and organisational standards. The solution must exist as a coherent whole. Solutions must be designed consistently across the solution landscape and make optimum use of appropriate technologies. Solution architecture must focus on creating usable and useful solutions. Solution architecture must have a standard reliable approach to business engagements and the design of solution that emerge from them. Solution architecture must work collaboratively with other information technology functions – other architecture roles, business analysis and service management – to ensure continuity along the solution delivery journey. Effective solution architecture involves: • Have a depth and breadth of solution delivery and technical experience to be able to identify solution design options quickly • Being able to understand the detail of the solution while maintaining a view of the wider (and higher) context of the business need for the solution and being able to explain both these views of sets of information • Being able to communicate effectively with all parties – technical and business – involved in the solution design and delivery journey, assist with decision-making, be realistic and make appropriate compromises and design choices in order to create the best solution design • Being able to apply technology appropriately and with selective innovation (and the desire to constantly acquire new knowledge and ways of applying technology) • Being involved in the solution delivery journey along its entire length • Being able to be the solution advocate and subject matter expert This book is aimed at a variety of potential readers: • Existing solution architects who want to have a more theoretical and a broader understanding of their role • Existing or new managers of solution architecture functions who want to create a high-performing practice within their organisations and who want to articulate the benefits and value solution architect can contribute to the information technology function and the wider business and the potential it can offer to the business organisation • Mangers of information technology functions who want to understand what solution architecture is, where it fits into the wider architecture context and disciplines and solution delivery and operation and the value it can contribute to both the information technology function and the wider business • Other information technology architects who want to understand how the architecture disciplines can work together to deliver value • Business analysts and managers of business analysis functions who want to understand how they can work more closely with the solution architecture function in order to provide the business with a better overall service • Other information technology personnel who want to move into solution architecture and who want to understand what it is • Consulting organisations and individuals who want

Sculpture on a Grand Scale: Jack Christiansen's Thin Shell Modernism

Tyler Sprague - 2019
Built amid public controversy, the multipurpose arena was designed to stand for a thousand years but was demolished in a great cloud of dust after less than a quarter century. Many know the fate of Seattle's iconic dome, but fewer are familiar with its innovative structural engineer, Jack Christensen (1927-2017), and his significant contribution to Pacific Northwest and modernist architecture. Christiansen designed more than a hundred projects in the region: public schools and gymnasiums, sculptural church spaces, many of the Seattle Center's 1962 World's Fair buildings, and the Museum of Flight's vast glass roof all reflect his expressive ideas. Inspired by Northwest topography and drawn to the region's mountains and profound natural landscapes, Christiansen employed hyperbolic paraboloid forms, barrel-vault structures, and efficient modular construction to echo and complement the forms he loved in nature. Notably, he became an enthusiastic proponent of using thin shell concrete--the Kingdome being the most prominent example--to create inexpensive, utilitarian space on a large scale.Tyler Sprague places Christiansen within a global cohort of thin shell engineer-designers, exploring the use of a remarkable structural medium known for its minimal use of material, architectually expressive forms, and long-span capability. Examining Christiansen's creative design and engineering work, Sprague, who interviewed Christiansen extensively, illuminates his legacy of graceful, distinctive concrete architectural forms, highlighting their lasting imprint on the region's built environment.A Michael J.
