The Solution To Social Anxiety: Break Free From The Shyness That Holds You Back

Aziz Gazipura - 2013
"This is just the way I am." However, nothing could be further from the truth. In this inspiring, breakthrough book, Dr. Aziz guides you along the path out of social anxiety and into greater confidence in yourself. You will discover what is keeping you stuck in shyness and learn exactly what to do in order to break free. After suffering from social anxiety himself for many years, Dr. Aziz became determined to find a way to social freedom. His deep understanding if what creates the social fears, shyness, and limitations, displays just how much he gets what it feels like to be shy.The first part of this book focuses on understanding the problem. You will discover exactly why you feel social anxiety in a variety of situations. This section teaches you about the deep underlying beliefs that lead to your fears, and you will learn the single belief that is beneath all shyness. In this section you will also understand why you have that continual fear of, "what will they think of me?" that can be so limiting in social anxiety. you will also learn about your inner critic, which is actually a much bigger drain on your confidence than any situation or person outside of yourself. The second portion of this book focuses entirely on the solution to social anxiety. Dr. Aziz starts by describing social confidence as the way out. Social confidence includes a feeling of relaxed freedom around others to be yourself without the self-criticism and judgment that are so common in shyness. You then go on to discover the 3 major steps of breaking free from shyness and social anxiety. These are: Know Who You Are Accept Yourself. All of Yourself Take Bold Action Step 1 - Know Who You Are In order to overcome social anxiety and feel confident and to relate to others with comfort and ease, you must know who you are. This includes owning your preferences, speaking your mind, and letting go of the need to please everyone else at the expense of yourself.  Step 2 - Accept Yourself. All of Yourself. Most of the pain and suffering from shyness and social anxiety is not due to the rejection we receive from others. It's the rejection we receive from ourselves on a daily basis. You will discover how to turn your inner critic into an ally so you can feel more peace and joy in all of your interactions. Step 3 - Take Bold Action No matter how much we change our thinking and accept ourselves, nothing significant changes in our lives unless we take action. In order to truly liberate yourself and break free from shyness, social anxiety, and self-doubt, you must consistently move towards what scares you. In this section you will design your own customized action plan for creating social confidence and success. This book is by no means academic or aloof.

Adversaries into Allies: Win People Over Without Manipulation or Coercion

Bob Burg - 2013
Now Burg is back with a new book, offering deeper insight about what it means to be truly influential and providing powerful strategies for mastering the art of persuasion.   Faced with the task of persuading someone to do what we want, most of us expect, and often encounter, resistance. We see the other person as an adversary and often resort to coercion or manipulation in order to get our way. But while this approach might at times bring us short-term results, it leaves people with a bad feeling about themselves and about us. At that point, our relationship with the person is weakened and our influence dramatically decreased.   There is a better way.   Drawing on his own experiences and the stories of other influential people, Burg offers five simple principles of what he calls “ultimate influence”—the ability to win people to your side in a way that leaves everyone feeling great about the outcome…and about themselves!: ·Control your own emotions: Responding calmly rather than allowing your emotions to get the better of you will ensure not putting the other person on the defensive but rather help them remain open to your ideas. ·Understand the clash of belief systems: Every individual operates based on an unconscious set of beliefs, experiences, and ideas, which are most likely very different from yours. Understand this and you can avoid confusion and numerous misunderstandings that stand in the way of most people’s ability to influence. ·Acknowledge their ego: People want to feel good about themselves; if you make someone genuinely feel good, you’re one step closer to making an ally. ·Set the proper frame: People react and respond to other people. Approach potential conflicts from a position of benevolence, resolution, and helpfulness and they will follow suit. ·Communicate with tact and empathy: While the first four principles are vital, this is what brings it all home. Saying the right thing at the right time makes all the difference in terms of moving people to your side of the issue and taking the appropriate action that benefits all concerned.   In the tradition of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People and Robert Cialdini's Influence, Burg offers a tried-and-true framework for building alliances at work, at home, and anywhere else you seek to win people over.

Weekend Language: Presenting with More Stories and Less PowerPoint

Andy Craig - 2013
When we go to a party on Saturday night, we don't talk about how we optimized our calendar last Wednesday to monetize our mission-critical, best-of-breed, seamless-solution-provider business. (If you do, that's probably why you haven't been invited back to many parties). No, on the weekends our speech is conversational, simple, clear, and interesting. We speak in examples, anecdotes, and analogies. But then Monday morning hits. We step into the office and suddenly we're full of feature lists and ten-point plans, "high level" terms and nonsense. As if that wasn't bad enough, we beat the snot out of our audiences with 118-slide PowerPoint presentations chock-full of text. Audience members typically don't remember anything from those types of presentations. But they do remember stories. The approach and techniques found in this book are designed to help you replicate your existing strengths as a weekend storyteller so you can drag them into your weekday presentations to and conversations with customers, partners, employees, and investors. That way, you can be a great communicator every day of the week.

Conversations for Action and Collected Essays: Instilling a Culture of Commitment in Working Relationships

Fernando Flores - 2013
With networked technology, disconnecting is becoming increasingly more difficult. In order to build productive and trusting relationships, we must learn skills that will enable us to build trust, coordinate our commitments more effectively, listen to each other and build networks of commitments for the sake of producing value for ourselves, for our families, for the organizations in which we participate, for our communities, and for our world as a whole. The essays in this collection offer a framework for developing more effective, productive relationships in the workplace or in any context where a person must coordinate with others to make something happen. The essays describe how to effectively make commitments that allow us to create something of value. Describing Flores' network of commitments/conversations for action framework, a framework that has been cited in more than three thousand books, the author paints a vivid view of language as action rather than just words that transfer information from one place (the speaker) to another (the listener). When people engage in conversations, commitments are made, and spaces of possibilities are opened up. Therefore, the theme is of "instilling a culture of commitment" in our working relationships, allowing us to focus on what we are creating of value together rather than the ongoing stress of attempting to calculate tradeoffs of individual interests. Edited by Maria Flores Letelier, it was Maria's mission to make available works that had rested as private papers in hard copy form only for twenty to thirty years. She selected and edited a group of essays and placed them in an effective order for the reader.

Shadow Type: Classic Three-Dimensional Lettering

Steven Heller - 2013
Letters with relief and shadow have long been an effective way to add spectacle or intrigue to otherwise mundane words. Introduced in metal type as early as 1815, shadow typefaces were a form of early experimentation among type founders. In the late nineteenth century, the form was adopted in wood type for use in posters and has been embraced ever since by designers looking for ways to communicate a sense of monumentality, a feeling of confidence, or a simple impression of optimism. Shadow Type presents a broad spectrum of examples—advertising, shop signs, billboards, posters, type-specimen books—featuring the most popular, rare, and (nearly) forgotten dimensional letters from Europe and the United States. Compiled by the leading historian of graphic design Steven Heller and renowned graphic designer Louise Fili, this invaluable collection, packed full of typographic ideas, will inspire anyone aiming to give more depth to their design.

Katherine Preston - 2013
Imagine waking up one day to find your words trapped inside your head, leaving you unable to say what you feel, think, want, or need. At the age of seven that happened to Katherine Preston. From that moment, she began battling her stutter and hiding her shame by denying there was anything wrong. Seventeen years later, exhausted and humiliated, she made a life-changing decision: to leave her home in London and spend a year traveling around America meeting hundreds of stutterers, speech therapists, and researchers. What began as a vague search for a cure became a journey that debunked the misconceptions shrouding the condition, and a love story that transformed her conception of what it means to be normal. Shedding light on an ancient condition that affects approximately 4 million people in the United States and 60 million people worldwide, Preston has assembled an anthology of expertise and experience. In addition to specialists in the field, she interviews celebrities, writers, musicians, social workers, psychologists, and financiers—men and women from all walks of life battling their difficulties with speech. A heartwarming memoir and a journalistic feat, Out With It is more than a chronicle of one of the most prevalent speech problems in the world; it’s a story about understanding yourself, and learning to embrace the voice within.

The Ethics of Information

Luciano Floridi - 2013
ICTs have profoundly changed many aspects of life, including the nature of entertainment, work, communication, education, health care, industrial production and business, social relations, and conflicts. They have had a radical and widespread impact on our moral lives and on contemporary ethical debates. Privacy, ownership, freedom of speech, responsibility, technological determinism, the digital divide, and pornography online areonly some of the pressing issues that characterise the ethical discourse in the information society. They are the subject of Information Ethics (IE), the new philosophical area of research that investigates the ethical impact of ICTs on human life and society.Since the seventies, IE has been a standard topic in many curricula. In recent years, there has been a flourishing of new university courses, international conferences, workshops, professional organizations, specialized periodicals and research centres. However, investigations have so far beenlargely influenced by professional and technical approaches, addressing mainly legal, social, cultural and technological problems. This book is the first philosophical monograph entirely and exclusively dedicated to it.Floridi lays down, for the first time, the conceptual foundations for IE. He does so systematically, by pursuing three goals:a) a metatheoretical goal: it describes what IE is, its problems, approaches and methods;b) an introductory goal: it helps the reader to gain a better grasp of the complex and multifarious nature of the various concepts and phenomena related to computer ethics;c) an analytic goal: it answers several key theoretical questions of great philosophical interest, arising from the investigation of the ethical implications of ICTs.Although entirely independent of The Philosophy of Information (OUP, 2011), Floridi's previous book, The Ethics of Information complements it as new work on the foundations of the philosophy of information.

That is where this book comes in handy: it explains the tricks manipulators use and teaches you how to best defend and protect yourself.

Speaking of Violence: The Politics and Poetics of Narrative in Conflict Resolution

Sara B Cobb - 2013
Yet frequently, the speaking of violence reproduces the social fractures and delegitimizes, again, those that struggle against their own marginalization. This speaking ofviolence deepens conflict and all too often perpetuates cycles of violence. Alternatively, sometimes people do not speak of the violence and it is erased, buried with the bodies that bear it witness. This reduces the capacity of the public to address issues emerging in the aftermath of violence andrepression. This book takes the notion of narrative as foundational to conflict analysis and resolution. Distinct from conflict theories that rely on accounts of attitudes or perceptions in the heads of individuals, this narrative perspective presumes that meaning, structured and organized as narrativeprocesses, is the location for both analysis of conflict, as well as intervention. But meaning is political, in that not all stories can be told, or the way they are told delegitimizes and erases others. Thus, the critical narrative theory outlined in this book offers a normative approach to narrative assessment and intervention. It provides a way of evaluating narrative anddesigning better-formed stories: better in that they are generative of sustainable relations, creating legitimacy for all parties. In so doing, they function aesthetically and ethically to support the emergence of new histories and new futures. Indeed, critical narrative theory offers a new lensfor enabling people to speak of violence in ways that undermine the intractability of conflict

The Rationalizing Voter

Milton Lodge - 2013
Citizens are very sensitive to environmental contextual factors such as the title "President" preceding "Obama" in a newspaper headline, upbeat music or patriotic symbols accompanying a campaign ad, or question wording and order in a survey, all of which have their greatest influence when citizens are unaware. This book develops and tests a dual-process theory of political beliefs, attitudes, and behavior, claiming that all thinking, feeling, reasoning, and doing have an automatic component as well as a conscious deliberative component. The authors are especially interested in the impact of automatic feelings on political judgments and evaluations. This research is based on laboratory experiments, which allow the testing of five basic hypotheses: hot cognition, automaticity, affect transfer, affect contagion, and motivated reasoning.

Human Lie Detection and Body Language 101: Your Guide to Reading People's Nonverbal Behavior

Vanessa Van Edwards - 2013
In a ten minute conversation you are likely to be lied to two to three times. Learn how to spot those lies. You will learn: *How to read body language *How to be a human lie detector *How to read people *How to detect hidden emotions *How to spot lies This body language book is based on scientifically backed research on the how to read people's nonverbal behavior. Who Is This Book For? Whether you are a business owner, parent, spouse, employee, human resources director, teacher or student, this book will change the way you interact with those around you. Here are all of the people that can benefit from this book on body language: Employers Public speakers Doctors Human Resources Directors Poker Players Actors Students Employees Parents Teachers Entrepreneurs You! If you have ever interacted with another person, this book will be useful to you because our everyday interactions are filled with secret nonverbal cues just waiting to be uncovered. Because this book is based in real science, it will debunk some popular myths about lying. Lying Myth #1: If people look to the left, they are lying. If they look to the right they are telling the truth. Although there is some science about eye direction, which we talk about in the book. It is not the most reliable form of lie detection. The book will show you more accurate (and easier) ways to spot lies. Lying Myth #2: Liars can't look you in the eyes. On average, honest people will make eye contact during conversations about 60% of the time-way less than you thought, right? Liars actually look you in the eye more because they want to seei f you believe their lie or not. Lying Myth #3: Emails and IM's are filled with lies because it is easier to lie when people can't see or hear you. In the book, I will tell you which of the following have the most lies: ___Emails ___IM's ___Phone conversations ___Face to Face interactions I'll give you a hint: Shockingly, we lie the MOST in phone conversations and the LEAST in emails. Why Is Lie Detection Important? It is important when we know we are being lied to because it can save us money, time and sometimes even our safety. This book can train you to get to the truth 80% to 90% of the time. That can save you money on a faulty house, from hiring a bad employee or making sure you know what is really going on with your child or significant other. Unfortunately, we are not good at detecting lies. We are only right about 54% of the time! That is a little better than a coin toss. We tend to assume the best in people and have a bias towards truth-"innocent until proven guilty." In Human Lie Detection and Body Language 101 I give a number of real life examples and tons of practical tips that you will be able to use immediately. For example, wouldn't it have been great to have known when Lance Armstrong was lying? Lance Armstrong Lies In his recent Oprah interview, Lance Armstrong's body language was off the charts with lies and inconsistencies. He constantly made the "contempt" microexpression, which you will learn about in the book and showed how he really felt about the interview. He also showed a dominant and aggressive body posture and seating position. His words said far less than in his body. You can learn how to decode these popular culture segments on TV and in real life. If you find this case fascinating and wish you could begin to unravel the mysteries of body language, then get your copy of Human Lie Detection and Body Language 101 now!

Evolution of Emotional Communication: From Sounds in Nonhuman Mammals to Speech and Music in Man

Eckart Altenmüller - 2013
Are there universal principles governing our own communication system? Can we even see how close animals are related to us by constructing an evolutionary tree based on similarities and dissimilarities in acoustic signaling? Research on the role of emotions in acoustic communication and its evolution has often been neglected, despite its obvious role in our daily life. When we infect others with our laugh, soothe a crying baby with a lullaby, or get goose bumps listening to classical music, we are barely aware of the complex processes upon which this behavior is based. It is not facial expressions or body language that are affecting us, but sound. They are present in music and speech as "emotional prosody" and allow us to communicate not only verbally but also emotionally. This groundbreaking book presents a thorough exploration into how acoustically conveyed emotions are generated and processed in both animals and man. It is the first volume to bridge the gap between research in the acoustic communication of emotions in humans with those in animals, using a comparative approach. With the communication of emotions being an important research topic for a range of scientific fields, this book is valuable for those in the fields of animal behaviour, anthropology, evolutionary biology, human psychology, linguistics, musicology, and neurology.

Empowering Coaching and Crisis Interventions

Dean Amory - 2013
The purpose of this guide is to help lay counsellors, relatives and friends of people in need to discover empowering techniques for supporting the people around them that find themselves afflicted by crisis. The shoulder and ear of a friend or a lifeline volunteer, should never replace professional counselling where this is needed; yet, not all people affected by crisis need or want professional help and often the input of a peer: a fellow journeyer or trusted friend or relative, will suffice to help the person affected by crisis to get back on his feet. Since all of us will find ourselves sooner or later in a situation in which relatives or friends need our help and support, we may as well prepare ourselves for the occasion.

How to Perform On-The-Job Training

Dean Amory - 2013
Studies also indicate that it is the most effective form of job training. Yet, it also represents a significant investment considering that roughly 30% of a new worker's time is spent in on-the-job training during the first 90 days of employment, that productivity of experienced workers assigned to train new workers may decrease during the training period, and that new workers may make expensive mistakes. Both companies and workers therefore profit largely from the presence of simple, but complete trainee and trainer guides that allow for executing OJT in a structured way. “How to perform on-the-job training”, has the information, techniques and tips that will allow you to implement a professional OJT training program. The book also includes all the tools, documents and checklists necessary for setting up a qualitative and efficient skills training program for OJT coaches.

The Judas Syndrome: Why Good People Do Awful Things

George K. Simon Jr. - 2013
Are they bad people, or just don’t do enough, or people with good intentions but acting in ignorance? Or are they basically decent people who, when put to the test, fail because of their weak faith?Filled with many examples, Judas Syndrome gives concrete ways to prevent people, even other Christians, from hurting you and the role that faith can play in changing them and helping you avoid the pain that these relationships often bring. Although sometimes we suffer as a result of our own shortcomings and missteps, placing our trust in Christ's message of love provides the gateway to the life God intends for us. In other words, faith can really save us—a faith, however, that is not easily undertaken on a daily basis or one that can be sustained alone.

Once, Only the Swallows Were Free

Gabrielle Gouch - 2013
An erudite man cursed with a limp but blessed with insight. The years of separation stand like a wall of tangled weeds between them, but he eventually opens up. In a cosy room with red Persian carpets and photographs of his mother, whom he has never known, gentle Tom shares stories of his life, often funny, sometimes heartbreaking but never self-pitying.Though the story is factual, the author uses her strong eye for detail and the techniques of fiction to create this engaging and thought-provoking account about ordinary people who have lived through war, fascism, communism and the transition to capitalism. The story explores issues of identity, disability, emigration and family relationships against a background of the major political events of the time, from a perspective that challenges some accepted views.Through a gripping and beautifully written personal history, Gabrielle Gouch succeeds in creating a memoir as strange, rich and fascinating as fiction. This story moves beyond the life of a family, it depicts neighbours and friends, colourful characters who breathe life into the times.

Writing the Gettysburg Address

Martin P. Johnson - 2013
. . . Are any six words better known, of greater import, or from a more crucial moment in our nation's history? And yet after 150 years the dramatic and surprising story of how Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address has never been fully told. Until now.Martin Johnson's remarkable work of historical and literary detection illuminates a speech, a man, and a moment in history that we thought we knew. Johnson guides readers on Lincoln's emotional and intellectual journey to the speaker's platform, revealing that Lincoln himself experienced writing the Gettysburg Address as an eventful process that was filled with the possibility of failure, but which he knew resulted finally in success beyond expectation. We listen as Lincoln talks with the cemetery designer about the ideals and aspirations behind the unprecedented cemetery project, look over Lincoln's shoulder as he rethinks and rewrites his speech on the very morning of the ceremony, and share his anxiety that he might not live up to the occasion. And then, at last, we stand with Lincoln at Gettysburg, when he created the words and image of an enduring and authentic legend.Writing the Gettysburg Address resolves the puzzles and problems that have shrouded the composition of Lincoln's most admired speech in mystery for fifteen decades. Johnson shows when Lincoln first started his speech, reveals the state of the document Lincoln brought to Gettysburg, traces the origin of the false story that Lincoln wrote his speech on the train, identifies the manuscript Lincoln held while speaking, and presents a new method for deciding what Lincoln's audience actually heard him say.Ultimately, Johnson shows that the Gettysburg Address was a speech that grew and changed with each step of Lincoln's eventful journey to the podium. His two-minute speech made the battlefield and the cemetery into landmarks of the American imagination, but it was Lincoln's own journey to Gettysburg that made the Gettysburg Address.

Helene's World: Helene Desportes of Seventeenth-Century Quebec

Susan McNelley - 2013
For nine years, she lived in Samuel de Champlain's Habitation. In 1629, the little settlement was captured by the English. Helene, along with the majority of the other French settlers, was put on an English ship and taken to France. She returned to Quebec in 1634 and spent the remainder of her life in the little colony. She was married twice, had fifteen children, and seventy grandchildren. No portrait of Helene exits. There are no memoirs, no diaries, nor any letters to guide the biographer. Nevertheless, there are public records and other primary sources from which we are able to piece together her life. This, then, is her remarkable story, set against the backdrop of France's efforts to establish a colony in the New World along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

Dialogue Across Difference: Practice, Theory, and Research on Intergroup Dialogue: Practice, Theory, and Research on Intergroup Dialogue

Patricia Gurin - 2013
This shift holds both promise and peril: Increased inter-ethnic contact could lead to a more fruitful learning environment that encourages collaboration. On the other hand, social identity and on-campus diversity remain hotly contested issues that often raise intergroup tensions and inhibit discussion. How can we help diverse students learn from each other and gain the competencies they will need in an increasingly multicultural America? Dialogue Across Difference synthesizes three years’ worth of research from an innovative field experiment focused on improving intergroup understanding, relationships and collaboration. The result is a fascinating study of the potential of intergroup dialogue to improve relations across race and gender.First developed in the late 1980s, intergroup dialogues bring together an equal number of students from two different groups – such as people of color and white people, or women and men – to share their perspectives and learn from each other. To test the possible impact of such courses and to develop a standard of best practice, the authors of Dialogue Across Difference incorporated various theories of social psychology, higher education, communication studies and social work to design and implement a uniform curriculum in nine universities across the country. Unlike most studies on intergroup dialogue, this project employed random assignment to enroll more than 1,450 students in experimental and control groups, including in 26 dialogue courses and control groups on race and gender each. Students admitted to the dialogue courses learned about racial and gender inequalities through readings, role-play activities and personal reflections. The authors tracked students’ progress using a mixed-method approach, including longitudinal surveys, content analyses of student papers, interviews of students, and videotapes of sessions. The results are heartening: Over the course of a term, students who participated in intergroup dialogues developed more insight into how members of other groups perceive the world. They also became more thoughtful about the structural underpinnings of inequality, increased their motivation to bridge differences and intergroup empathy, and placed a greater value on diversity and collaborative action. The authors also note that the effects of such courses were evident on nearly all measures. While students did report an initial increase in negative emotions – a possible indication of the difficulty of openly addressing race and gender – that effect was no longer present a year after the course. Overall, the results are remarkably consistent and point to an optimistic conclusion: intergroup dialogue is more than mere talk. It fosters productive communication about and across differences in the service of greater collaboration for equity and justice.Ambitious and timely, Dialogue Across Difference presents a persuasive practical, theoretical and empirical account of the benefits of intergroup dialogue. The data and research presented in this volume offer a useful model for improving relations among different groups not just in the college setting but in the United States as well.

Innovative Leaders Guide to Transforming Organizations

Maureen Metcalf - 2013
It integrates best practices from consulting firms, colleagues, and clients. I would first like to acknowledge Accenture and PricewaterhouseCoopers for providing practical opportunities for me to learn and build strong skills in consulting, organizational change, large-scale systems change, and strategic thinking, among many others. It was this solid foundation that allowed me to create this methodology. As a theoretical foundation, I worked with or studied the work of many thought leaders in the fields of leadership development, developmental psychology, integral theory, and others. The theoretical giants on whose hard work we built the Innovative Leadership and Organizational Transformation models include: Terri O'Fallon, Ph.D., Susanne Cook-Greuter, Ph.D., Hilke Richmer, Ph.D., Roxanne Howe-Murphy, Ed.D., and Peter Senge, Ph.D., Cindy Wigglesworth Ph.D., and Ken Wilber. These leaders shared not only their theories, but ongoing guidance and encouragement helping to create a solid framework that is comprehensive and theoretically grounded.

Getting to We: Negotiating Agreements for Highly Collaborative Relationships

Kate Vitasek - 2013
It's time for a change. For years, businesses have worked under the assumption that the goal of negotiation is simply to get the deal. Hundreds of books have been written on 'getting to yes,' 'getting past no,' and 'getting more'…the prevalent assumption being 'Get a signature, and you're done.' But this narrows the focus down strictly to the strategies and tactics needed to negotiate this deal, this time, under this set of terms—with no thought for the future. More and more, business success depends on strategic relationships built for an ever-dynamic and interconnected world that will endure long after 'the deal is done.' For many organizations, this ongoing relationship is as important as the deal itself. The focus needs to be on developing evolving and mutually beneficial relationships that create shared value, solve mutual problems, and get both parties to a place of 'we' rather than the usual 'us vs. them' tug of war. Drawing on best practices and real examples from companies achieving record results, Getting to We flips conventional negotiation on its head and shifts the perspective to where it belongs: viewing the relationship as the substance of the deal, not merely a 'one and done' transaction. From the team that developed the Vested business model for highly collaborative relationships and experts in the field of negotiation, this innovative book provides both sides of the negotiation table with the tools they need to create mutual, long-lasting, successful business relationships in today's new business world.

Start with an Earthquake... How to Make Presentations That Wow Your Audience

Tim Stockil - 2013
How to make presentations that wow your audience is designed to help anyone deliver a speech that is dynamic, creative and memorable. Using this book, readers can explore what gives a speech impact, through language, gesture, vocal variety and rhetorical devices. It focuses on making a speech more creative, and advises how preparing yourself practically, physically, vocally and emotionally can help banish speech-day panic. It also clarifies why PowerPoint is generally unhelpful (and almost always badly used) and reveals a fool-proof method for constructing a speech from the initial idea to the final delivery. Tim Stockil spent ten years in the theatre as a director before moving into training, so he understands both the concept of top quality performance and how to draw it out of even the most nervous and tongue-tied subject. Central to his method is to ensure that you have both a topic (what your speech is about) and an objective (what you want your audience to feel and do as a result of your presentation). Stockil insists that no speech should ever just be about imparting information, though many people in business fail to realise this. With his theatrical background, he shows how to rehearse properly - again, something that most business people fail to do. Stockil peppers the text with real-life experiences of his 25 years of running courses on presentation skills and coaching people one-to-one. Readers will find examples of speeches and the people who gave them, successful and otherwise. These include a long extract from a very powerful contemporary speech, which is accompanied by notes which demonstrate why it is so effective. Start With an Earthquake... is ideal for those who work in business or have to face presentations on a daily basis. However, the book would also be helpful to anyone making a speech, from a wedding to the Rotary Club.

Close Up at a Distance: Mapping, Technology, and Politics

Laura Kurgan - 2013
These maps are built with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), remote sensing satellites, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS): digital spatial hardware and software designed for such military and governmental uses as reconnaissance, secrecy, monitoring, ballistics, the census, and national security. Rather than shying away from the politics and complexities of their intended uses, in Close Up at a Distance Laura Kurgan attempts to illuminate them. Poised at the intersection of art, architecture, activism, and geography, her analysis uncovers the implicit biases of the new views, the means of recording information they present, and the new spaces they have opened up.Her presentation of these maps reclaims, repurposes, and discovers new and even inadvertent uses for them, including documentary, memorial, preservation, interpretation, political, or simply aesthetic. GPS has been available to both civilians and the military since 1991; the World Wide Web democratized the distribution of data in 1992; Google Earth has captured global bird's-eye views since 2005. Technology has brought about a revolutionary shift in our ability to navigate, inhabit, and define the spatial realm. The traces of interactions, both physical and virtual, charted by the maps in Close Up at a Distance define this shift.

Human as media: The emancipation of authorship

Andrey Miroshnichenko - 2013
This is an important book in a world where our apps are learning about us every time we touch a screen, and it is essential reading for anyone who has come to suspect that our civilization may have the medium and message reversed." Douglas Rushkoff The author of Present Shock, Program or Be Programmed, Media Virus, and others “Dr. Andrey Miroshnichenko, a media futurist and journalist, trained as a philologist, has written a very important book. I would go even further and say that a new star is born that students of media ecology, communications and digital media need to pay special attention to by first reading his book and then integrating his insights into their own understanding of the Internet, the World Wide Web and social media... The book is a blockbuster full of insights into the nature of communication, socialization, authorship, culture, politics and their connection to the Web... Dr. Miroshnichenko has extended McLuhan’s ideas to create totally new insights of his own." Robert K. Logan The author of The Future of the Library: An Old Figure in a New Ground (coauthored with Marshall McLuhan), The Sixth Language, McLuhan Misunderstood: Setting the Record Straight (2013), and others. DESCRIPTION Over 6,000 years of literary civilisation, there have been perhaps 300 million authors: people capable of communicating their opinion beyond their own physical circles. Now, thanks to the Internet, in the historical blink of an eye, the number of authors has reached two billion people. In his book, "Human as Media. The Emancipation of Authorship", the media futurist Andrey Miroshnichenko examines the impact of emancipated authorship on the media, culture, and politics in closed and open societies. Miroshnichenko demonstrates that, becoming themselves the media, people unavoidably engage in the evolution of media activism. For the sake of response and better socialisation, the former audience gets increasingly infected by authorship and inevitably moves from everyday idle talk, to funny cats, then to communal subjects, and finally, to political activities. The conflict between emancipated authorship and the old broadcast media model will stir up antagonisms between developed and developing countries, and will also intensify social and cultural conflicts within developing countries. Andrey Miroshnichenko is a Russian media futurist, journalist, writer and public speaker, Ph.D., coordinator for the Russian Association of Futurologists, Fulbright-Kennan scholar (2012-2013), and the author of a number of books on linguistics, journalism and communications. He is also a regular contributor to influential Russian media outlets, including Forbes.ru, Slon.ru, The Moscow News, Colta.ru and others. Andrey Miroshnichenko is known for his concept of the Viral Editor and his research in the media sphere. After working in print media for twenty years, Miroshnichenko wrote his book, When Newspapers Die (2010), which became a bestseller in Russian media circles, subsequently leaving the press himself. Over the past few years, he has been consulting corporations and politicians on media. He also researches and advises on the development of new, old and corporate media. Social Elephant: New Rules for Making Friends in Our Changing Social Economy

Kiah Wakefield - 2013
Unfortunately, more people are finding that they simply aren't clicking. Despite an authentic, human desire to connect, millions of people are simply predisposed to undermine social connection. The problem isn't always a lack of social skill, and these people are no more or less attractive than anyone else. The Roman philosopher Cicero defined friendship as an agreement in things sacred and profane, accompanied by good will and love. And Henry Adams, the first cosmopolitan American journalist said that to have one friend in life is much, two are rare and three are hardly possible. People tend to mistake acquaintances for friends, and unfortunately, many people don't have any true friends at all. Social Elephant: New Rules for Making Friends in Our Changing Social Economy is an amalgamation of personal experiences and academic research on friendship.
