If Life Were Easy, It Wouldn't Be Hard: And Other Reassuring Truths

Sheri Dew - 2005
A simple statement by her niece restored her perspective: "Aunt Sheri, if life were easy, it wouldn't be hard." The fact is, life is hard-but that's okay. If we learn to turn to the Lord, he can make our burdens light. Distinguishing between burdens (the stuff mortality throws at us) and baggage (the junk we elect to pick up on our own) can help ease our way. So can a correct understanding of basic principles like charity and chastity. This road map to some basic truths about life will make you feel better-even on hard days!

David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism

Gregory A. Prince - 2005
McKay served as president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1951 until his death in 1970. Under his leadership, the church experienced unparalleled growth—nearly tripling in total membership—and becoming a significant presence throughout the world. The first book to draw upon the David O. McKay Papers at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, in addition to some two hundred interviews conducted by the authors, David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism focuses primarily on the years of McKay's presidency. During some of the most turbulent times in American and world history, McKay navigated the church through uncharted waters as it faced the challenges of worldwide growth in an age of communism, the civil rights movement, and ecumenism. Gregory Prince and Robert Wright have compiled a thorough history of the presidency of a much-loved prophet who left a lasting legacy within the LDS Church. Winner of the Evans Handcart Award.  Winner of the Mormon History Association Turner-Bergera Best Biography Award.

Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait in Poetry

Mattie J.T. Stepanek - 2005
What I witness, what I feel, what I think, what I fear, what I treasure. I write about life, which is our greatest gift." —Mattie Stepanek, 1990-2004Mattie J. T. Stepanek lived and died a child, but he had the spirit of a giant. Affected by a rare and fatal neuromuscular disease, Mattie lived almost fourteen years but in that time became a poet, best-selling author, peace activist, and a prominent voice for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Before his death in June 2004, his five volumes of Heartsongs poetry sold more than a million copies.Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait Through Heartsongs is the final collection of Heartsongs that Mattie was working on when he died. It includes the last poem Mattie penned along with a special collection of unpublished poetry, photographs, and artwork spanning the decade from when he began writing Heartsongs at age three.Culled from the thousands of poems, essays, and journal entries Mattie left behind, the entries in Reflections of a Peacemaker create a portrait of Mattie in his own words. In these poems he explores disability, despair, and death but also the gifts he finds in nature, prayer, peace, and his belief in something "bigger and better than the here and now." The poems are grouped by theme such as playful, stormy, sacred, and final Heartsongs, with each section introduced by a personal tribute from the likes of Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Larry King, and former President Jimmy Carter. In the words of Mattie's mother, Jeni Stepanek, who has published Reflections of a Peacemaker at her son's request, "In reading these poems we enter Mattie's world and gain insight through a child who somehow balanced pain and fear with optimism and faith."

Covenant Hearts: Marriage and the Joy of Human Love

Bruce C. Hafen - 2005
Satan is ever striving to blur and contort the truth; modern society is experiencing a shifting toward a culture of divorce. In a way that no other book has, this book provides an eternal perspective about marriage. Noting that marriage can be the most sanctifying — yet the most demanding — experience of our lives, Elder Hafen observes that marriage is "the home room of the earth school our Father created to give his children a place to learn and grow. Families are the laboratories where we test and develop our religion." See through the confusion in our society and create an environment in which human love overcomes all opposition and lasts forever.

Lengthen Your Stride: The Presidency of Spencer W. Kimball

Edward L. Kimball - 2005
Kimball, from 1973 to 1985, spanned years of remarkable growth and dramatic developments in the Church. In that time, Church membership grew from 3.2 million to 5.9 million, the number of full-time missionaries serving grew from 17,000 to nearly 40,000 and temples in operation increased from 15 to 36. This book focuses exclusively on President Kimball's ministry as Church President, describing such landmark events as the revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy males, the publication of new editions of the LDS scriptures, and the reorganization of the quorum of the Seventy. The accompanying CD-ROM (created by BYU Studies) contains a wealth of additional information, including a longer version of the biography, photos not included in the book, some audio clips of President Kimball (including a sample before the surgery on his throat), as well as copies of other books written by or about President Kimball.

Discourses of President Gordon B. Hinckley, Vol. 2: 2000-2004

Gordon B. Hinckley - 2005
Hinckley became the fifteenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Beloved for his sound counsel, his far-reaching vision, his ease with the media, and his sense of humor, President Hinckley has traveled the world over, addressing huge audiences and small congregations. This volume gathers a marvelous sampling of those addresses, including all his general conference addresses from the second five years of his ministry as prophet, many additional talks selected from his travels, and speeches delivered to the general public. This landmark collection takes readers from Manhattan to Madrid, from Guam to Ghana, and also features talks from several historic satellite broadcasts, including the 175th anniversary of the restoration of the priesthood and the 125th anniversary of the Primary. Particularly poignant are the addresses given on September 11 and 14, 2001, when the United States was reeling from the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Truly, in such troubled times, the greatest comfort comes from knowing we are led by a prophet of God!

The Normal Way of Fruit-Bearing and Shepherding for the Building Up of the Church

Witness Lee - 2005
Certain ?spiritual? persons insist that to serve the Lord is absolutely a matter of life. They say that since we have life, we will grow in our service, so there is no need of any training. Those at the other extreme insist that we must receive schooling in order to serve. We need the proper life plus the proper training. We should not insist on either extreme. Yes, we need life; without life we cannot carry out the spiritual things. However, this does not mean that as long as we have life we need nothing more. In addition to the proper life, we still need the proper training and practice.

The Saving Righteousness of God

Michael F. Bird - 2005
    T. Wright. The burden of this volume is to demonstrate that reformed and ""new"" readings of Paul are indispensable to attaining a full understanding of Paul's soteriology. An analysis of Galatians and Romans demonstrates that the covenantal and forensic dimensions of justification go hand in glove. The vertical and horizontal aspects need to be appropriately described and weighted in order to provide a holistic rendering of justification in Paul's letters. According to Paul, faith alone in Jesus Christ is the instrument of eschatological vindication; and faith alone marks out the true people of God. ""In a debate where the worst of Protestant infighting has been revived, and the 'spirit of slavery' has been more influential than 'the Spirit of adoption, ' Michael Bird's treatment is more than welcome. His is a calm, judicious and irenic voice amid the welter of paranoid accusation and counteraccusation, which ought to be heard widely, and--more important--ought to be heeded. Perhaps, then the world will be able to say again, 'See how these Christians love one another'--without sneering."" --James D. G. Dunn, Emeritus Lightfoot Professor of Divinity, University of Durham ""For fair treatment and thoroughness of coverage, including that of literature which usually flies under most scholars' radar, this book is probably unmatched."" --Robert H. Gundry, Scholar-in-Residence and Professor Emeritus, Westmont College ""The so-called 'new perspective' continues to exercise a profound effect on studies both of Judaism and of Paul. Students may well be confused by the complexities of the debate, but Michael Bird helpfully shows how fruitful insights can be derived from scholars on both sides of it. This fresh and sane approach to a difficult area will clarify the essential issues for students and preachers alike as they wrestle with expounding the thought of Paul for the contemporary church."" --I. Howard Marshall, Honorary Research Professor of New Testament, University of Aberdeen ""The study of what Paul means by 'justification' has hopped its rails, and now scholars from opposing perspectives--traditional Reformation theology and the New Perspective--have exited the train and are standing on opposite sides of the track tossing stones at one another. Michael Bird has called for a peace plan, and his proposal of an incorporated righteousness not only offers peace but can actually get the train back on its tracks so we can get on with moving the gospel into our world. This study deserves a 'Nobel peace prize in Theology'."" --Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University Michael F. Bird (Ph.D., University of Queensland, Australia) is New Testament Lecturer at Highland Theological College in Dingwall, Scotland.

A Resolution under the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919, directing that the Measure should be presented to His Majesty, was afterwards passed in the House of Lords by a large majority. But a similar Resolution in the House of Commons was defeated on 15th December, 1927, and the Prayer Book Measure of 1927, therefore, could not be presented for the Royal Assent.Early in the year 1928 a second measure (known as the Prayer Book Measure, 1928) was introduced in the Church Assembly, proposing to authorise the use of the Deposited Book with certain amendments thereto which were set out in a Schedule to the Measure. The Measure again was approved by large majorities both in the Convocations and the Church Assembly; but a Resolution directing that it should be presented to His Majesty was defeated in the House of Commons on 14th June, 1928.This book is a copy of the Deposited Book referred to in the Prayer Book Measure of 1927, as amended in accordance with the provisions of the Prayer Book Measure, 1928.[EMPHASISED:] The publication of this Book does not directly or indirectly imply that it can be regarded as authorised for use in churches."

Junia: The First Woman Apostle

Eldon Jay Epp - 2005
Because later theologians and scribes could not believe (or wanted to suppress) that Paul had numbered a woman among the earliest churches' apostles, Junia's name was changed in Romans to a masculine form. Despite the fact that the earliest churches met in homes and that other women were clearly leaders in the churches (e.g., Prisca and Lydia), calling Junia an apostle seemed too much for the tradition. Epp tracks how this happened in New Testament manuscripts, scribal traditions, and translations of the Bible. In this thoroughgoing study, Epp restores Junia to her rightful place.

A Holy Meal: The Lord's Supper in the Life of the Church

Gordon T. Smith - 2005
What did he mean? Throughout church history, there have been various interpretations of his words. These differences have caused denominational ruptures that have yet to heal.In A Holy Meal, Gordon T. Smith shows that we cannot appreciate the Lord's Supper until we understand it. In light of the renewed attention given to the sacraments by all branches of the church, he examines the historic interpretations and seeks common ground among believers. In the process, he shows how the Lord's Supper can infuse new meaning into the church as it confronts the forces of postmodernism and secularism. A Holy Meal is essential reading for Christians who want to ponder the Lord's Supper again--perhaps truly for the first time.

Are We There Yet?

Robert L. Millet - 2005
But because we have been called to the high standard of perfection and commissioned to pattern our lives after Jesus, we are frequently more aware of our shortcomings than our progress. Simply stated, we wrestle with our worthiness. Sometimes we even question our standing before God and our capacity to measure up here on earth and qualify for exaltation hereafter. This book discusses the meaning of worthiness, focusing especially on how we can find peace and hope here and now, even though we occasionally fall short of the ideal.

Peter Marshall - 2005

His wife, author Catherine Marshall, wrote his best-selling biography, A Man Called Peter, which was subsequently made into the much heralded 1955 movie. The Wartime Sermons of Dr. Peter Marshall includes many of his most sought-after messages delivered during World War II. Today, as we continue to face a war against global terrorism during the aftermath of Spetember 11, 2001, these wartime sermons, preached more than fifty years ago, have never been more timely, appropriate, or desperately needed. From Pew to Pulpit: A Beginner's Guide to Preaching

Clifton F. Guthrie - 2005
Recent years have seen a considerable increase in the amount of financial resources required to support a full-time pastor in the local congregation. In addition, large numbers of full-time, seminary trained clergy are retiring, without commensurate numbers of new clergy able to take their place. As a result of these trends, a large number of lay preachers and bivocational pastors have assumed the principal responsibility for filling the pulpit week by week in local churches. Most of these individuals, observes Clifton Guthrie, can draw on a wealth of life experiences, as well as strong intuitive skills in knowing what makes a good sermon, having listened to them much of their lives. What they often don't bring to the pulpit, however, is specific, detailed instruction in the how-tos of preaching. That is precisely what this brief, practical guide to preaching has to offer. Written with the needs of those for whom preaching is not their sole or primary occupation in mind, it begins by emphasizing what every preacher brings to the pulpit: an idea of what makes a sermon particularly moving or memorable to them. From there the book moves into short chapters on choosing an appropriate biblical text or sermon topic, learning how to listen to one's first impressions of what a text means, moving from text or topic to the sermon itself while keeping the listeners needs firmly in mind, making thorough and engaging use of stories in the sermon, and delivering with passion and conviction. The book concludes with helpful suggestions for resources, including Bibles, commentaries, other print resources and websites.

Scottie May - 2005

Rather than focusing on innovative ways to use technology, Children Matter emphasizes relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God.

Dancing with God: Anglican Christianity and the Practice of Hope

Jay E. Johnson - 2005
The good news of Christian faith suggests something different. Each and everyone of us is invited to dance with God. Each of us can dance. Each of us can do theology.Theology, long seen as the domain of professors, scholars, and clergy, is actually the work of all God's people. Dancing with God uses the metaphor of dance to help readers--especially those without a theological background--approach the discipline of theology as something we all do, and not only something to believe. And doing theology is the practice of hope. This book explores the way Anglicans approach theology. The good news, according to Johnson, is not about the assurance of getting things right. It comes, instead, from considering our texts, creeds, and liturgies as invitations to dance with the God of abundant life. Beautifully and accessibly written, Dancing with God makes an excellent book for individual or parish study.

Savior & the Serpent: Unlocking the Doctrine of the Fall

Alonzo L. Gaskill - 2005
Many Christians assume it was an evil, unnecessary act. Even among Latter-day Saints, there are competing views and questions about what happened in Eden: Why did God give Adam and Eve conflicting commandments in the Garden? How much of the story is literal and how much is symbolic? Relying on scriptures and statements from the prophets, Alonzo Gaskill carefully distinguishes between settled LDS doctrine on this subject and popular interpretations. He teaches that the Fall was foreordained to be part of the Plan of Salvation and shows how insights we have gained about the Fall help us find our bearings in dealing with the challenges of everyday life.

This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion

Gayle Carlton Felton - 2005
This is the blood of Christ.” It’s Communion Sunday. The service is a little longer, and the sacrament is observed with gravity. You know it’s important, but the wonder is lost. What does it all mean, really? According to the results of a survey, you’re not alone. United Methodists have a strong sense of the importance of Holy Communion, but they also lack a meaningful understanding of the theology behind it. Reclaim a richer sacramental life in your congregation through a group study of This Holy Mystery. In 2004, the General Conference of The United Methodist Church adopted an official interpretative document on Holy Communion. (Go here to download a copy.) For the first time in our history, the denomination has an official, comprehensive statement of the practice and theology of the Lord’s Supper. Now, it’s time for congregations to help members understand the observance. ’We believe that study of this document will yield increased appreciation for the sacrament in the worship experience and enable United Methodist people to draw nourishment and strength for their ongoing journeys of faith,’ writes Felton. This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion is a study guide of the General Conference–approved document. An all-in-one resource, this book is for both participants and leaders. It’s divided into 7 sessions, providing commentary on the history, practice, and principles of Holy Communion in United Methodist congregations. It also points to implications of the sacrament for ministry and mission. We come to the Table of the Lord, seeking to have our spiritual needs met. The benefits include forgiveness, nourishment, healing, transformation, ministry and mission, and eternal life. Renew your appreciation for the divine grace made available through this sacrament.

Sanctified Vision: An Introduction to Early Christian Interpretation of the Bible

John J. O'Keefe - 2005
O'Keefe and R. R. Reno explain the structure and logic of the early Church fathers' interpretations of the Bible. These interpretations are considered foundational to the development of Christianity as a religion and offer insight into how the early church fathers thought about Christian doctrine and practice. By analyzing selected portions of patristic exegesis, the authors illustrate specific reading techniques employed by the church fathers to expound the meaning they believed intrinsic to biblical texts. This approach is organized around three basic analytic strategies: literal, typological, and allegorical. The literal strategy is an intensive and broad analysis that identifies particular word associations that intensify scriptural meaning. The typological strategy interprets distinct patterns of events within scripture and applies those patterns to other events in scripture and the history of the church. The allegorical approach to biblical reading, like the topological strategy, seeks patterns in the text, but these patterns are more diverse and represent larger themes or beliefs of the early church.Within this analytic framework, the authors explain the larger structure of patristic exegesis and argue for the importance of this structure in the emergence of Christian orthodoxy.

Traveling Together: A Guide For Disciple Forming Congregations

Jeffrey D. Jones - 2005
Author Jeffrey D. Jones believes that if the old answers don't work any more it is because the world in which they had worked is no more. A new world has dawned and new answers are urgently needed. In Traveling Together, Jeff Jones takes his readers on a journey, providing a guidebook that maps out: * The factors facing congregations in this post-modern, post-Christian world * What it means to be a disciple * Biblical foundations for understanding the purpose of the church-to become a disciple-forming community * Key experiences that contribute to the growth of disciples * Eight important qualities of a disciple-forming congregation Rather than bemoaning the state of the church in the world today, Jones says we need to be open to the possibility that the struggles of these times are God's way of calling the church to be what it is supposed to be-to do what it is supposed to do in this new world. Traveling Together is a travel guide for a journey with a sacred purpose-discerning God's call, both as individuals and as the church. The destination will look different for different congregations, but Jones provides the tools to help pastors and other leaders embark on their own unique quest to respond to God's call. Anyone concerned for the life and ministry of the church, who has a sense that things are not what they might be, and who is seeking a new understanding of congregational life and mission will find hope and help in these pages. With the heart of a pastor, Jeff Jones shows congregational leaders how to embrace the best parts of their church's rich heritage and reclaim it for a new day.

Welcoming Children: A Practical Theology of Childhood

Joyce Ann Mercer - 2005
The author draws insights from classic and modern feminist theologians, pastoral theologians, and contemporary cultural criticism to offer strategies for educational and liturgical practices in congregations that welcome children and contribute to their flourishing. Mercer outlines a feminist practical theology of childhood exploring five basic theological claims: 1) children as gifts and parenting as a religious practice of stewardship; 2) welcoming those who care for children; 3) children as fully human; 4) children as part of God's purposes; and 5) acknowledging and transforming the sufferings of children. Her compelling argument reframes ministries with children as processes through which the church can become the foundation for children forming identities that resist consumerist culture and instead walk in the ways of Jesus.

This Holy Man: Impressions of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh

Gillian Crow - 2005
His books have become classics, and as leader of the Russian Orthodox Church in Britain he was one of the most prominent Orthodox personalities on the world stage. But who was Metropolitan Anthony, the inner man behind the public preacher and pastor? How did his life story and personality mould his Christianity? How did his work - as monk, doctor, bishop and, almost to the end, parish priest and spiritual father - affect his ministry and other writings? In this, the first comprehensive examination of Metropolitan Anthony's life and work, Gillian Crow presents a compelling portrait of a complex human being: both a charismatic, warm person, aglow with the joy of his faith, and also someone who fought hard with inner demons of shyness, insecurity and at times depression. This sympathetic yet honest portrayal will be essential reading for all those who have been touched by Metropolitan Anthony's own writing and who wish to find out more about his

Jewish Slavery in Antiquity

Catherine Hezser - 2005
Against the traditional opinion that after the Babylonian Exile Jews refrained from employing slaves, Catherine Hezser shows that slavery remained a significant phenomenon ofancient Jewish everyday life and generated a discourse which resembled Graeco-Roman and early Christian views while at the same time preserving specifically Jewish nuances. Hezser examines the impact of domestic slavery on the ancient Jewish household and on family relationships. She discusses theperceived advantages of slaves over other types of labor and evaluates their role within the ancient Jewish economy. The ancient Jewish experience of slavery seems to have been so pervasive that slave images also entered theological discourse. Like their Graeco-Roman and Christian counterparts, ancient Jewish intellectuals did not advocate the abolition of slavery, but they used the biblical tradition and their own judgements to ameliorate the status quo.
