Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies

Catherine McNiel - 2022
So why are so many Christians taught to fear their neighbors? The American church is known as a people who are afraid, who have been nurtured through fear into hatred, and who have moved from hatred to violence--or at least to neglect. This fear, too often lived out boldly in the name of Jesus, is a false religion.God instructs us to welcome strangers. We are not to withhold hospitality or help from anyone in need. So why do we fear strangers, especially those needing hospitality, afraid that their presence may threaten what we have?Jesus taught us to love our enemies. We are to pray for those who actively harm us. Instead, we create enemies in our minds, seeing anyone who thinks, believes, looks, or lives differently from us as dangerous, a threat to our way of living. The Christian community exists to declare and demonstrate God's love and to follow Jesus in practicing love over fear, even in unsafe times and places. It's time to reclaim our brave fear of God and risk transformative love for the sake of our neighbors, the strangers among us, and our enemies. We are people of the Kingdom. Fearing Bravely teaches us that we have nothing to fear. Instead, we can respond to our fear problem with a brave love that emerges from choosing to let our fear of God overcome our fear of everything else.Catherine McNiel writes with conviction, wisely guiding us to recognize our fear and, with God's help, not let it limit us to love courageously all who are among us.

Talking about Race: Gospel Hope for Hard Conversations

Isaac Adams - 2022
Why is that the case? Why does it matter? Can things get better, or are we permanently divided? In this honest and hopeful book, pastor Isaac Adams doesn't just show you how to have the race conversation, he begins it for you. By offering a fictional, racially charged tragedy in order to understand varying perspectives and responses, he examines what is at stake if we ignore this conversation, and why there's just as much at stake in how we have that discussion, especially across color lines--that is, with people of another ethnicity. This unique approach offers insight into how to listen to one another well and seek unity in Christ. Looking to God's Word, Christians can find wisdom to speak gracefully and truthfully about racism for the glory of God, the good of their neighbors, and the building up of the church. Some feel that the time for talking is over, and that we've heard all this before. But given how polarized American society is becoming--its churches not exempt--fresh attention on the dysfunctional communication between ethnicities is more than warranted. Adams offers an invitation to faithfully combat the racism so many of us say we hate and maintain the unity so many of us say we want. Together we can learn to speak in such a way that we show a divided world a different world.Talking About Race points to the starting line, not the finish line, when it comes to following Jesus amid race relations. It’s high time to begin running.

A Dozen Things God Did with Your Sin (and Three Things He'll Never Do)

Sam Storms - 2022
This often happens when believers fixate on their sins while forgetting what Christ has already done on their behalf at the cross. Sam Storms explains it this way: "What consumes us is what we have done by sinning. What ought to consume us is grateful meditation on what God has done with our sinning."In his latest book, Storms addresses this anxiety over sin by reminding believers of the good news of the gospel. Beginning with an explanation of the glory of penal substitution, he walks through 12 things God did with their sin, including forgiving it, passing over it, and casting it into the depths of the sea. He also explains 3 things God will never do with their sin, such as counting it against them. Walking through the Bible's teaching, Storms helps believers find freedom, joy, and peace in knowing what God has done (and will never do) with their sin through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus.

TABLETALK: Pride and Humility

Burk Parsons - 2022
2:7). After man’s fall into sin, the Lord said to Adam, “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (3:19). It is humbling to be reminded that we are dust and to dust we will return. But then also to grasp that the Lord formed us and made us in His image ought to make us rejoice with sincere gratefulness.Because of our sin, we are not as humble or as grateful as we ought to be. Humility and gratefulness cannot be separated—they are the closest of companions. Gratefulness is born of humility, but entitlement is born of pride. At the heart of the sin of Eve and Adam was their feeling of entitlement rooted in their pride, for they believed they could be like God. They were not content to be who God created them to be; they believed they knew better than God. This same sin is at the heart of our own sin and much of the sin we see in the world today. When we don’t live as God has designed and called us to live, it is because we think we know better than He does. When those in the world live however they want, they are acting out the same sin. The difference is that while the world puts its pride on display, we as Christians ought to despise the pride that lurks in our hearts and repent of it.There is a war within us between the flesh and the spirit, between Spirit-wrought humility and pride. As Christians, we must humble ourselves before God and pray daily that He would make us humble. This is one of the scariest prayers we could ever pray because God often answers it with a trial that humbles us and makes us utterly dependent on Him.We pray for genuine humility so that God will get glory, not so that we might get glory for being seen as humble. Genuine humility isn’t making ourselves seem humble but forgetting ourselves for others’ sake. The truly humble man is one whom others see as humble but who does not always see himself that way because his eyes are so fixed on our humble Savior.

The Good News of Our Limits: Find Greater Peace, Joy, and Effectiveness through God’s Gift of Inadequacy

Sean McGever - 2022
We think that following God will bring peace, but instead find ourselves anxious. We expect a life of joy, but end up feeling stressed, living under the heavy load of new expectations. It's a spiritual and emotional rollercoaster. We search for solutions using optimization techniques, attempting to fit more and more into our already full days. We try to craft efficiently maximized lives, but these methods always fail, not because they are ill-intentioned, but because they do not go far enough. They fail to understand how God made us--as people with inherent limitations--and they fail to accept that as good.In The Good News of Our Limits, professor and longtime ministry leader Sean McGever reveals the wonderful news that we cannot do, be, or know all of the things that others expect of us--and that we often expect from ourselves. Nor should we. As it turns out, these expectations are not God's expectations. The freeing truth is that God created us with limitations, and he did it for a reason. God is the only all-powerful, all-present, and all-knowing person, and we are not. We can only know and do some things, and we can only be in one place at a time. And that is enough. Accepting this truth frees us to find greater peace and joy, and somewhat surprisingly, greater effectiveness in life. The Good News of Our Limits helps readers answer questions like:What are our God-given human limits? How do I find peace when I can't control the circumstances, tragedies, and difficulties that surround my life? How do I choose what is best when my time, focus, and abilities are limited? How many people can I realistically know personally? What can I do to deepen key relationships when I feel relationally maxed-out?How do I navigate all the information that comes my way each day?Through personal stories and fascinating cultural insights, The Good News of Our Limits calls readers to embrace the blessedness of their limitations and adopt a few key practices to better balance their lives. Biblical and practical, it points to a better way forward for us all.

Michael Horton - 2022
From politics to the pandemic, we live with an ever-increasing uncertainty, and many of us have grown to fear the rapid disintegration of our society and our own lives.Recovering Our Sanity is not another self-help book about how to beat your daily fears for a better life. It's a book that will show you the gravity and glory of a God who's worthy of our fear. It’s a book that will reveal how these two biblical phrases—Fear God and Do Not Be Afraid—are not contradictory but actually one coherent message.Michael Horton—Professor of Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary—shows us that we cannot fight our fears by seeking the absence of fear altogether, but by living with a fear of God that drives out the fear of everything else. Horton will walk you through the case for the fear of God by:Developing what it means to fear God, biblically and theologically, and what this kind of fear looks like in practice.Categorizing different types of fears—from cultural anxiety to pain and hardship—and what they stem from.Focusing on how to confront our earthly fears with our hope in Christ, rooted in the gospel.Reminding us that God does not exist for us; we exist for God.Humbling, thought-provoking, and hope-igniting, Recovering Our Sanity delivers a timely message that will help you shift your focus from a human-centered obsession with self-preservation to a fixation on Christ and his salvation.Rather than clinging to false securities and promises of immediate gratification, you can gain the lasting joy of knowing the One who has given himself to save us and who says to us, "Do not be afraid."

The Struggle to Stay: Why Single Evangelical Women Are Leaving the Church

Katie Gaddini - 2022
The #MeToo era, when many women hit a breaking point with rampant sexism, has also reached evangelical communities. Yet more than thirty million women in the United States still identify as evangelical. Why do so many women remain in male-dominated churches that marginalize them, and why do others leave? In each case, what does this cost them? The Struggle to Stay is an intimate and insightful portrait of single women's experiences in evangelical churches. Drawing on unprecedented access to churches in the United States and the United Kingdom, Katie Gaddini relates the struggles of four women, interwoven with her own story of leaving behind a devout faith. She connects these personal narratives with rigorous analysis of Christianity and politics in both countries, and contextualizes them through interviews with more than fifty other evangelical women. Gaddini grapples with the complexities of obedience and resistance for women within a patriarchal religion against the backdrop of a culture war. Her exploration of how women choose to leave or remain in environments that constrain them is nuanced and personal, telling powerful stories of faith, community, isolation, and loss. Bringing together meticulous research and deep empathy, The Struggle to Stay provides a revelatory account of the private burdens that evangelical women bear.
