The Theory of Cat Gravity: Being Robin's Pet Theory

Robin Wood - 2000
And, for just as many years, the people who have been listening and laughing have been asking for it to be all written down in a book. Well, finally, it is! The Theory of Cat Gravity, which is my Pet Theory, is all written out for your enjoyment, with decorations by Diana Harlan Stein who has been nominated for the Hugo Award several times. (I asked her to do it, because I can't do that many pictures in any reasonable amount of time anymore.) In it, I explain just what Cats are doing in those Window Ledges, and what that has to do with being immobilized by having a Cat on your Lap, and why things pile up under your bed and on your dining room table, and why it gets harder to move the older you get, and many other puzzling things. And it's all part of the same Unified Pet Theory. And not only that, but since the illustrations are all black and white line drawings, you can use it as a coloring book! If you have a cat, you are going to love this book. If you don't have a cat, you need it anyway to give to your friends who have cats. (But read it first, so that you are Warned! )

Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat—Not a Sour Puss

Pam Johnson-Bennett - 2000
Let's face it, comparing cats and dogs is like, well, like comparing apples and oranges. They are different, and they have different needs. A dog is a pack animal that needs a leader. By nature a dog expects to get rubbed and wrestled with. Dogs like to horse around. A cat does not. A cat is a solitary predator and needs its space. But what both cats and dogs do need is your love and attention. Just because a cat is, by nature, independent doesn't mean that he or she doesn't need your praise or physical affection. There are a lot of myths about cats -- like the one above -- that lead to their mistreatment. By learning more about what makes a cat a cat, you will be better able to give your feline the space, care, and love that he or she needs. And this sentiment couldn't be truer when it comes to training your cat. Hitting or yelling at your cat when he scratches his claws on your nice new couch just doesn't make sense. Your cat is only being a cat. He needs to scratch his nails so they can stay healthy and strong. Also, scratching helps a cat relieve stress and relax. Imagine being yelled at and hit for sprawling out on the couch with a magazine and a glass of nice red wine after a long day's work. You must align your training expectations with your cat's needs if you want to have a happy, well-trained cat. Johnson-Bennett advises you to "get on her level emotionally, physically, and mentally in order to map out an effective training plan." She outlines three basic methods for training: positive reinforcement (rewarding kitty for good behavior), remote control (spraying kitty with a water gun when she jumps on the kitchen counter), and redirection (getting kitty to scratch on a scratching post instead of your expensive couch). By using these training methods in the first place, you will get a head start in establishing good behavior, and in the process you and your cat will become closer. If you want to learn more about your cat and what you can do to strengthen and enjoy your relationship with each other, then Think Like a Cat should really be on your reading list. From years of experience as a vet technician and as an adoring cat owner, Johnson-Bennett knows her stuff. And she covers it all in this book -- from grooming, training, health, and nutrition to emergency care, games, and toys. So get ready to hear a lot more purring around the house!—Jen Forman

Balthus and Cats

Alain Vircondelet - 2000
Alain Vircondelet was a close friend of the late Balthus and originally wrote this text in intimate collaboration with the artist. He explains the symbolism within Balthus’s paintings and draws parallels between the sleepy, languishing forms of the girls and cats he painted. Balthus, who referred to himself as the Thirteenth King of Cats, regularly featured the feline form in his art, even as early as age nine, when he produced a story of his beloved Mitsou in forty Indian ink drawings. Balthus’s wife Setsuko and their daughter Harumi shared his deep affection for cats, and the family’s devotion becomes evident in this volume, which offers behind-the-scenes access into their home, featuring personal photographs, belongings, and reproductions of the artist’s cat paintings.

The Quotable Feline

Jim Dratfield - 2000
Inside, page after page of entertaining photos are matched perfectly with a short poem or hilarious quip. Rich sepia tones add a wonderful antique finish to all the photos, each capturing a classic moment in the day of a cat. A few are special poses--a fluffy white cat draped with pearls is accompanied by Colette's comment, "By associating with the cat, one only becomes richer"--but many are simply kitties caught in the act of being their delightful selves. Peeking out of a fence, staring into a fishbowl, sitting forlornly on the front step--you're sure to see a calico, tiger-stripe, or tabby that reminds you of a favorite pet or kitten moment. Authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, and Ernest Hemingway cover a range of moods you'll find familiar, from adoration to total exasperation. Your cat's favorite quote is sure to be the one from a royal tomb at Thebes: "Thou art the Great Cat, the avenger of the gods, and the judge of words, and the president of the sovereign chiefs and the governor of the holy Circle; thou art indeed... the Great Cat." Try reading that aloud to your kitty--you're sure to get the look that says, "What, you only just figured this out, human?" --Jill Lightner
