The Picnic and Suchlike Pandemonium
Gerald Durrell - 1973
It constitutes a series of anecdotal snippets and short stories including 'The Picnic', a laugh-out-loud account of an ill-fated Durrell family excursion, which should have been a relaxing, jolly affair. Other hilarious and surreal Roald Dahlesque stories ensue, including the critically acclaimed Gothic horror story 'The Entrance'.
Parrots of the World
Joseph M. Forshaw - 1973
Doubleday was the US publisher (ISBN 0385056281) this book is out of print, as it's a parrot fanatic's ultimate reference to parrots in the wild. Beautifully illustrated with full-color plates, it covers every known species of parrot, and some that are sadly extinct since its printing. It provides information on all aspects of parrots in the wild as far as they are known, from size to range to breeding habits to habitat, but it's really the illustrations that make this book so valuable. The White Rhino Saga
Ian Player - 1973
With a new introduction by Julian Rademeyer and a ‘missing chapter’ never before published, a new generation of readers can enjoy and learn from the extraordinary story of how the white rhino was saved from extinction four decades ago. From Ian Player’s first visit to the Umfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa’s Zululand in 1952, the salvation of the white rhino from extinction became an obsession with him. The white rhino, the second largest animal in the world, had roamed over the southern half of the African continent in large numbers during the nineteenth century and before. By the 1960s fewer than five hundred remained, confined to 72 000 acres, not nearly enough territory for them to remain healthy and alive. The problem confronting Ian Player and his coworkers was twofold: how to repopulate the game reserves of Africa where white rhinos had once lived, and how to supply white rhinos to the zoos of the world. The techniques for capturing and transporting the huge animals are fascinating. The White Rhino Saga, Alan Paton writes in his foreword, ‘is a book for every lover of the wild. The danger of captures, the disappointments, the ultimate successes, makes a splendid tale.’ It is a tale of adventure, of Africa, of animals – and of the man who set out to save them.
Dogsteps, Illustrated Gait at a Glance
Rachel Page Elliott - 1973
It's all spelled out in pictures. All of the ways in which a dog moves-the walk, the trot, the gallop, ambling, pacing and cantering-are clearly illustrated and diagrammed. The terms used to describe the way s in which dogs stand or move-terms often heard but not always understood-become crystal clear here. There's no mistaking such descriptions as "moving close", "over at the knees", "crabbing", "pitching" or 'crossing" when we see them in picture. No judge of dogs will want to be without "Dogsteps". But it's a book for breeders and exhibitors, too. In his Foreword, Dr. E. W. Tucker, past president of the American Veterinary Association, writes: "Study of this material will aid all in recognizing what is good and what is faulty action, and the application of what is learned should produce rewarding results for the conscientious breeder".

Here and there are personal reflections and anecdotes which not only help to enliven the pages but often also provide a new insight into a problem."--Science
