He figures an impressively-larger bank account might be the only way he can lure his Secret Service agent ex-wife back. Malcolm finally hits it big by aggressively shorting bonds when the market crashes, but waits too long to invest in tangibles. All that newfound money suddenly won’t by him a bar of gold, a pint of beer, or a minute of Hannah’s attention—especially when she’s in the field chasing down a former counterfeiting gang. As luck would have it, Ryan turns out to be a closet doomsday prepper. The two of them attempt to escape the chaotic Big Apple and reach Ryan’s land in West Virginia, supplied only by the contents of Ryan’s bug-out bag. But it’s not going to be an easy journey. Traveling has become difficult and dangerous. Malcolm learns he must redirect the same tenacity which helped him beat the markets towards staying alive on the road …and, hopefully, finding Hannah.

The Most Uncommon Cold I: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Jeffrey Littorno - 2013
Her neck was still bent awkwardly to the left. I was struggling to make sense of what I was seeing when she spoke. “Wha…what…hap… happened t…to me?” She stuttered and slurred, but her words could be understood. Her eyes were still glassy as she slowly turned her head to look at me. I took me a few seconds to respond. Replying to someone who was just a moment earlier to all appearances dead has a way of taking your breath away. Eventually, I managed to say, “Well, I don’t really know, I...uh...came in and there was a man in...airport coveralls named James and...” “I f-feel cold,” she muttered slowly as if she had not heard me. Sluggishly and with difficulty, she raised herself at the waist. She looked down at her bloody body surveying the damage. Until this point, I had not noticed that her right shoulder looked as if a bite had torn away a chunk of the flesh and her left cheek had four parallel deep scratches as if fingernails had ripped down the side of her face. I couldn’t see other wounds, but blood covered most of her light green uniform making it look black. “You shouldn’t move!” I yelled. “Don’t move! I’ll go find a doctor!” I was standing a few feet from her, but somehow she managed to twist around a reach my leg. I felt her hand grab hard into the skin of my calf. “No, s-s-stay here,” she hissed as I yanked my leg free and backed away. “You need a doctor!” I cried out as I spun around to leave. When I reached the doorway, I looked back at her. She was still struggling to stand even as she slid her body toward me. A trail of smeared blood stayed on the white tile floor behind her. “Stay,” she hissed again, but I was already out the door.Kevin Turner is having a very bad day. The Longest Night

K.M. Fawkes - 2018
History of blood clots? Cholesterol clogging up the old ticker? There was a nanobot for that. It wasn’t cheap of course, and everyone knew that new technology had bugs in it. But hey, why not let the rich be the guinea pigs for once? Fast-forward a year, and the one percent began dying en masse. The nanobots had evolved to view ageing as a virus, and were reacting by shutting down the host. Swathes of the population were infected before the government rolled out a treatment program, in the midst of riots and mass unrest. Meanwhile, the nanomachines spread like wildfire, infecting and killing millions. The remains of the government had no choice but to detonate a series of experimental weapons in the atmosphere, producing an EMP effect which rendered almost all electronic devices on Earth useless. Bradley is one of the survivors. A former veterinarian, he decides to escape his burning city and trek deep into the Maine wilderness, aiming to find his estranged father’s old lake house. Remembering lessons learned and long forgotten, Bradley endeavors to survive on his own terms, and be self-sufficient in a new and altogether darker world. But his struggle has only just begun. Defending Sea Breezes: When the Collapse comes, what if your family doesn't have a bunker in the woods to escape to?

Douglas Thornblom - 2015
There is no unexplained virus that turns people into zombies. There is no band of preppers that have a stocked hideout to bug out to. Unlike most novels of this genre, the author provides a very credible, actually very likely, background as to how the collapse of America occurs, and then how a normal middle class community responds to the breakdown of society. In the near future, worldwide political and military strife increases, and Israel is forced to try to take out Iran's nuclear facilities weeks before they complete a nuclear weapon. Iran and Islamic terrorists accelerate their long-planned strike against the "Great Satan" in revenge. An average American middle class community is faced with a sudden and complete breakdown of the U.S. economy, government, and society after a massive, nation-wide Islamic terrorist attack combined with a devastating cyber attack on American infrastructure. Like the vast majority of Americans, none of the residents of Sea Breezes have a convenient bunker in the woods or a compound of survivalist friends to escape to. They have to find some way to organize themselves in order to survive with what they have on hand, and what they can obtain by using their own wits and determination. Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Richard Cantrell and his brother-in-law, former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Josh Koenig, residents of the Florida community, volunteer to help, and what follows is the riveting and often heart-breaking account of a community coming to grips with the unthinkable. "Defending Sea Breezes” is a complex story that weaves together international Islamic terrorism, government foreign policy failures, and the indomitable American spirit, to portray one of the most realistic and compelling “what if” stories of survival, all in one complete, stand-alone novel. Unlike similar novels, this story gives a realistic, even probable, military and political background for the Collapse. Advisories: If you believe that America's foreign policy over the last 7 years has been on the right course you will not enjoy this book. Because this novel contains contemporary dialogue, it contains some profanity. Special note from the author: I have been working on this novel for many months, and as I was preparing to publish it, the horrific events of the ISIS massacre in Paris occurred. Unfortunately, those attacks fit exactly into the story line of my novel, and the event was easily incorporated; in fact, I only modified one sentence to do so. It is disturbing, but all too predictable in today's world, when terrorism fiction becomes fact.
