The Doors of Perception

Aldous Huxley - 1954
First published in 1954, it details his experiences when taking mescaline. The book takes the form of Huxley's recollection of a mescaline trip that took place over the course of an afternoon in May 1953. The book takes its title from a phrase in William Blake's 1793 poem 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell'. Huxley recalls the insights he experienced, which range from the "purely aesthetic" to "sacramental vision". He also incorporates later reflections on the experience and its meaning for art and religion.

Vines of Ostara

John P. Logsdon - 2019
There are just a few bugs to fix first... Join this comedic romp through the land of Kazaran, where you'll find interesting characters, a vast RPG world, adult themes/language/innuendo (don't worry, it's not a harem/reverse-harem book!)...and a fair amount of bloodshed too! In a nutshell, Kazaran is intended for mature audiences who harbor very immature thoughts. Grant Palaski is a low-level bug tester at the world’s largest MMORPG, Kazaran Online. It was meant to be a starting point to a high-level writing job, but all he has to show for his master’s is a mountain of student loan debt, a grudging addiction to caffeine, and zero respect. When he is handpicked to lead a group of pro gamers into Kazaran's new innovation, everyone is shocked. Why him? Even Grant can't answer that question, but he's not going to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime. The mission is to go from a level 1 newbie to a level 50 master. Millions of jealous gamers from all over the globe will watch the adventure, though hopefully, there’s no cameras in the showers. Plus, he’ll get paid. A lot. Except he probably should have questioned more about why he was chosen. Someone inside the company doesn’t want him to succeed. When everything goes wrong, Grant and his party have to balance the challenges of the game with uncovering the mystery of who sabotaged their test run. Can a guy used to losing lead his team to victory? Or will it be game over for good?

Gita Wisdom: Krishna’s Teachings on the Yoga of Love

Joshua M. Greene - 2009
In Gita Wisdom, Joshua Greene retells this timeless text in a completely new way, revealing that it is, in essence, a heart-to-heart talk between two friends about the meaning of life. As Krishna and his friend Arjuna reminisce on a battlefield known as Kurukshetra, readers learn that the two played together as children, were close as young men, and became family when Arjuna married Krishna’s sister. In later life the men shared extraordinary adventures, including a journey to places outside the known universe. Like all great literature, the Gita explores the human condition: who we are, where we came from, and why we’re here. With a helpful glossary that lists names, terms, and places, this accessible, enlightening retelling is the perfect introduction to the Gita’s venerable wisdom.

The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image

Leonard Shlain - 1998
Making remarkable connections across brain function, myth, and anthropology, Dr. Shlain shows why pre-literate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes that venerated the Goddess, images, and feminine values. Writing drove cultures toward linear left-brain thinking and this shift upset the balance between men and women, initiating the decline of the feminine and ushering in patriarchal rule. Examining the cultures of the Israelites, Greeks, Christians, and Muslims, Shlain reinterprets ancient myths and parables in light of his theory. Provocative and inspiring, this book is a paradigm-shattering work that will transform your view of history and the mind.

And then there were the games themselves: showcasing the full spectrum of footballing theatre, from the truly sublime to the utterly ridiculous.Matt's trip would also bequeath him footballing wisdom beyond his imagination. Not only would he learn that Liechtenstein had its very own 'golden generation', but also why one football club in Gibraltar is benefitting from a television gameshow, who in La Liga's mascot is a giant anchovy, how Tony Adams fared in his managerial spell in Azerbaijan, and just what Bosko Balaban is up to these days. This is the story of one fan on a once-in-a-lifetime experience: travelling to Europe's unseen corners, talking with its unsung supporters, and tracing the beautiful game across the breadth of our brilliant, bizarre continent.

The Difficulty of Being Good: On the Subtle Art of Dharma

Gurcharan Das - 2009
The Mahabharata is obsessed with the elusive notion of dharma - in essence, doing the right thing. When a hero falters, the action stops and everyone weighs in with a different and often contradictory take on dharma. The epic's characters are flawed, but their incoherent experiences throw light on our familiar dilemmas. Gurcharan Das's best-selling book India Unbound examined the classical aim of artha, material well being. This, his first book in seven years, dwells on the goal of dharma, moral well being. It addresses the central problem of how to live our lives in an examined way - holding a mirror up to us and forcing us to confront the many ways in which we deceive ourselves and others. What emerges is a doctrine of dharma that we can apply to our business decisions, political strategies and interpersonal relationships - in effect, to life itself.
