Dancers in the Dark & Layla Steps Up: The Layla Collection
Charlaine Harris - 2017
In "Dancers in the Dark," Rue LeMay is desperate to leave the past behind. Badly in need of money to start over, she takes a job at Blue Moon entertainment, where she'll be dancing with vampires at fancy parties and events. When she ends up paired with a 300-year-old Irish vampire, Sean McClendon, nicknamed the "Aristocrat," he senses she's hiding a secret. At first, his only concern is that whatever it is doesn't pose a danger to him. But as the two dance together, Sean begins to care deeply about keeping Rue--real name Layla--safe from what threatens her: past, present, and future. With "Layla Steps Up," Harris adds a new chapter to this fan favorite tale with an original short story. Set one year after the novella, Sean and Layla are still together, but on the cusp of upheaval. When a sadist with an eye for Sean comes to town, it will be Layla's turn to see if she can protect the man she loves. The Layla Collection brings these stories together for the first time and features a new introduction by Harris."--Provided by publisher.

Black Heart, Ivory Bones
Ellen DatlowJoyce Carol Oates - 2000
As in their previous critically acclaimed volumes of reconsidered fairy tales, award-winning editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have gathered together remarkable stories that illuminate the more sinister, sensual, and sophisticated aspects of the tales we cherished in childhood; the fables of witches and princes and lost children that we once imagined we knew. "Black Heart, Ivory Bones" showcases twenty beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, penned by twenty of the most creative artists in contemporary American literature. Here dissected are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. A lovelorn prince seeking his father's blessing concocts a fantastic tale of a witch, a tower, and lustrous long hair... A pair of accursed red boots punishes a beautiful dancer for her pride... A troll-killing, princess-rescuing warrior is compelled to consider events from his adversaries' point of view...In a blistering tell-all memoir, Goldilocks reveals the sordid truth about her brutal foster parent, Papa Bear... Rich, surprising, funny, erotic, and unsettling, these twenty new yarns and poems offer exceptional anew treasures--as they brilliantly reveal lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales.

Wizards: Magical Tales From the Masters of Modern Fantasy
Jack DannTad Williams - 2007
Gone are the cartoon images of wizened gray-haired men in pointy caps creating magic with a wave of their wands. Today's wizards are more subtle in their powers, more discerning in their ways, and-in the hands of modern fantasists-more likely than ever to capture readers' imaginations. In Neil Gaiman's "The Witch's Headstone," a piece taken from his much-anticipated novel in progress, an eight-year-old boy learns the power of kindness from a long-dead sorceress. Only one woman possesses two kinds of magic-enough to unite two kingdoms-in Garth Nix's "Holly and Iron." Patricia A. McKillip's "Naming Day" gives a sorcery student a lesson in breaking the rules. And a famished dove spins a tale worthy of a meal, but perhaps not the truth, in "A Fowl Tale" by Eoin Colfer.
